He is BY FAR the best on UA-cam. He doesn’t interrupt hardly at all. I just throw on headphones and jam with him because he doesn’t ruin the music. His energy is exactly what we need in this messed up world.
Ticks and leeches is basically a diss to their label which wanted them to make a heavier song which fit the trend back in the day which they didn’t want to do so they added that long ambient portion in the middle of the song to make it not radio playable + this was the last recorded song on the album because Maynard’s voice for weeks was destroyed from the screams in this song
It takes many listens to gain the entire meaning of any of their songs. Some songs I’ve been listening to for 30 years and I still have no idea what the hell it means!!
"Saturn comes back around" is referring to when the planet Saturn returns to the same position in the sky as when a person was born. Since this happens approximately every 29.5 years it's considered a time of reckoning, transformation, and taking responsibility for one's life.
you seem to naturally pick up the groove and rhythms better than I would on first listen. That's the best aspect of Tool imho... the tribal/hypnotic way the instruments weave in and out of each other. It's like a hippy drum circle, but with less hacky sacks and more skulls.
Been listening to this regularly for 24 years. Just keeps getting better. Glad you’re able to experience and enjoy the music that gets me through it. We had to wait 6 years for this album after Aenema.
Keep grinding and finding these amazing artists/bands and music. Keep listening to bangers and people will keep showing up. Also I have to make the comment about how much your long-form video whole album listens are refreshing vs the typical hear one song on an album 8 to 20 minute video. Mad respect for the choice to 'whole-ass' every band so far.
Very glad to see you give Danny his due at the end of The Grudge. That drum section (and most everything immediately preceding it) is one of my favorite parts of Tool's entire discography.
Welcome to one of the greatest works of music ever created. It never gets old and you'll continue to discover new things in the soundscape. Spiral out!
What I love about this is that you can tell you have very good natural rhythm, which is kinda needed to get into Tool on the first listen. If you can pick up the beat on the bass or cymbal, it really helps you keep your bearings. Keep it up man!
When your talking about how it's hard to predict how there gonna play the drums and the melodies, that's what we call in Music Theory "Time Signatures". In most music, it's 4/4. as in, you count to four. boom clap boom clap. 3/4 is you count to 3. Boom Boom Clap. 4/8 is count to 4 twice as fast. A polyrhythm which Tool love, is layering different time signatures. The last buildup of The Grudge does this. Time Signatures is basically fractions. Progressive Metal/Rock is all about pushing the boundaries of music further. If you want more artists like Tool, as in top tier rock/metal music, check out bands like Dream Theater, Rush, Pink Floyd, Genesis, The Mars Volta, Opeth, Gojira, Porcupine Tree, Yes, Meshuggah, and of course more Tool.
10,000 Days has caught so many strays for no reason. That album is a masterpiece, and hands down my favorite Tool album. That’s not saying that their other albums aren’t masterpieces either. Tool works hard to perfect everything they do.
I fucking love this album. Danny’s drumming gets better and better each album. Wait til you hear their (newest) album. Especially the song Pneuma. They call him the octopus for a reason. I know I’ve mentioned this to you on other Tool reactions, but if you’re ever see Tool touring in your area… GO! They are an absolute must see live. Pay extra to get up close if at all possible. They have so much going on in the background. Sometimes Maynard hides in the back the whole show as well. I’ve seen a ton of music live and Tool is the best.
It is ESSENTIAL that you listen to Gojira. They're one of the bands keeping metal alive and I think you'll have a blast listening to them. All of their albums are masterpieces, especially the third, fourth, and fifth ones. I hope you consider listening to them because they are the GOATS.

pretty sure I read or heard one of them say somewhere that their approach was to just take a single idea and hyper focus in on that one idea, and try to extract as much content out of that single idea for a song. edit: what really blows my mind is how these guys have been able to not only write these things, but then continue to memorize it all and tour around the world playing it every night.
Something you might enjoy - there was a late 60's and onward progressive rock band named King Crimson who retired in 2022 however two of the members, Adrian Belew (rhythm guitar / vocals) and Tony Levin (bass) decided to pull in Danny Carey (Tool drummer) to play Bill Bruford's drums (someone Danny I think looked up to a lot) and Steve Vai to play Robert Fripp's guitar parts. That half-cover half-original band is called 'Beat', I got to see them a few months ago and in this part - bongos at the end of 'The Patient', I think you'll love the drum spaz-outs that Danny does on 'Indiscipline'.
Short metal cliff notes for ya. 1:02:09 That sound you’re describing is a Moog Taurus bass synth. The odd thing about it is that its keyboard is laid out on the floor and the keys are these big paddles that you trigger with your feet. If you look up pretty much any live video of “Reflection” from this era (2001-2002), you’ll see him playing both simultaneously. Pretty cool. If you enjoy transitions and a Tool vibe, but you want a heavier experience... Gojira should be on your radar. Mastadon is also in the same slot. Think you'd enjoy both of those bands.
From the way you react, I think 10k days will be your favorite, definitely the most "jumpy" set of TOOL songs, but also with more controversial lyrics, not to say that they aren't absolute MASTERPIECES, it's my favorite album😍😍 Also Fear Inoculum; has it's heavy parts but in general is an absolute trip and you should consider 🚬 before 😭
This is a perfect 100 out of 10 album! I didn't always think that. I actually hated this album when it first came out. Mostly because every bass player I would jam with would say hey I can play the opening of schism. Yeah you and every other motherfuking bass player in the Houston area, so what! Couple years ago when I started truck driving, I went and did a deep dive in everything, and re-listening to this album opened my eyes. Holy shit it's so fucking good!
I had a similar experience. After listening to and loving Opiate, Undertow, and Aenima for years, Lateralus was enough of a departure for me that I didn't love it immediately. I went back to listening to their earlier work. It wasn't until I saw them live on the Lateralus tour that I was like "Oh...now I get it." I don't think I took the Lateralus CD out of my car for a year...
The thing is, I've been a tool fan for like 30 years, and after every song, I'm STILL like, "Wow, that might be my favorite song" after every one that I play. So I get it lol.
You should react to Nine Inch Nail's discography, their first album Pretty Hate Machine is not heavy, but then there will be a much heavier Broken EP and a great album The Downward Spiral, and then The Fragile, this is a perfect band
I thk the word u were searching for about wat the other albums or music is missing.........is HEART. Other bands can be great too but they don't capture the soul TOOL does.

Ticks and Leeches lore says that the studio wanted another 'single' for radio play, so Tool belted this one out for them. Kind of like Hooker with a Penis, just a fuck you song, imho.
It gives me so much anxiety when he takes his headphones off lmao like I feel he's missing something and I feel tense and its always on a drop like why? listen to that shit completely!!! hahaha I'm just an anxious sentient astral traveling cluster of atoms don't mind me.
@fast_mattw8059 yeah I know hahaha I kinda figured that out but still makes me anxious, I mean I still vibe with it because it shows he's truly enjoying the music
@yourfavoritedxrkskin yeah man, I know, it's just my anxiety talking. You truly enjoy the music and it shows and you're reacting to Tool as it's meant to, the whole album. Waiting for 10,000 days patiently.
You're coving all of my favorite heavy artists (Tool, Deftones, SOAD are my jam, and I love Slipknot's Iowa album), but if you're wanting to check out something VERY different, check out Jeff Buckley's "Grace." An amazing folk/rock album from a man with the voice of an angel (who died tragically before becoming the star he was sure to be). Seriously. Check it out. If, however, you want to dive into another heavy metal masterpiece, I'd recommend Machine Head's "Through the Ashes of Empires" then go straight into "The Blackening" Keep up the good work!
For what it's worth, imo, Lateralus is the greatest song ever created in every category(lyrically, musitionship, and vocals). With all due respect to stairway, freebird, and many others. It takes about 15 listens, but once it clicks, it clicks.

Hahaha i used to think the same but i imagine its silent in his room and when he takes them off he can still hear the music cause its so loud 🤘🏼
@fast_mattw8059 yeah I know hahaha I kinda figured that out but still makes me anxious, I mean I still vibe with it because it shows he's truly enjoying the music
@ hahah i hear ya 🤘🏼 he definitely shows it if he enjoys it!
Truss I’m gettin the whole thing🫶🏾

If, however, you want to dive into another heavy metal masterpiece, I'd recommend Machine Head's "Through the Ashes of Empires" then go straight into "The Blackening"
Keep up the good work!
For what it's worth, imo, Lateralus is the greatest song ever created in every category(lyrically, musitionship, and vocals). With all due respect to stairway, freebird, and many others. It takes about 15 listens, but once it clicks, it clicks.
