The making of the album was fraught with tension, personal struggles, and outright animosity among band members. They were struggling with substance abuse, fame, and the grueling demands of touring.Corey (lead singer) later admitted that everyone in the band “hated each other” during the recording process and he also reportedly recorded some of his vocal takes naked and would self-harm during sessions to channel the pain and darkness he felt into his performance. That’s why they haven’t put out another album like Iowa because everyone was in a really dark place.
Also the track Iowa can be interpreted as the speaker claiming possession of someone even in death. The act of filling the mouth with dirt might evoke imagery of burial, silence, or control when he says “Relax, it’s over, you belong to me / I fill your mouth with dirt” and the lyrics “You’re mine forever / I will kill you” is the combination between possession and destruction. It suggests a toxic, obsessive love that consumes both individuals. The dead person imagery could represent an obsession with things that are toxic, unhealthy, or no longer alive (emotionally or spiritually). But yeah Iowa reflects the band’s collective inner turmoil, with “Iowa” being the most intense and cathartic expression of that pain. Idk if you will read all of that but that’s the “background info” abt Iowa it’s some heavy dark shi man😂
@@yourfavoritedxrkskinif you do decide to watch the live versions then you should just do the whole London 2002 live show since that’s what the deluxe album. Everything Ends is about Corey trying to OD when the girl dumped him. He took all of his grandma's pills and it was the girl's mom who found him and got him to the hospital. Iowa is 15 minutes of him cutting himself and vomiting. And the next album is even crazier but for a different reason.

Not so fun fact: while recording Iowa(the song) Corey was cutting himself naked with a glass bottle, the screams in this song are the result of that. Corey recorded his part in this song once. The backwards screaming in this song is him saying “don’t look at me”
@@yourfavoritedxrkskin they very rarely play this live, at one point they were so drunk (and probably on other things) playing this live (in 02 I believe) that they made it last 30 minutes
Actually I saw him say in an interview that they played it twice during the recording process. And all of them were in the same, tiny, enclosed room except for Craig who basically said "Yeah no" and stayed in the sound booth because he couldn't fit his equipment in the room. Sid was in the room but only as emotional support basically because he also had no room to fit his turntables into the tiny space they recorded that song.
Since you want to get into drumming, I highly suggest checking out Slipknot's drum cam video from the Disasterpieces tour when this album came out. And since you're doing Tool soon, gotta check out the Pnuema drum cam with Danny Carey. Absolute legendary performance. Plus, I think you'd love the Drumeo UA-cam channel.
Your video on the original Slipknot LP inspired me to actually find the album on vinyl, and when I found it, I was playing it nonstop the whole day, its so good.
I've always felt that, emotionally speaking, the way they structure the back-to-back violence and heaviness of I Am Hated, into Skin Ticket, into New Abortion, into Metabolic, then into Iowa just fucks with the mind. Anytime I listen back on the full album it's that ending streak that cranks my neck with a torque wrench lmao

He repeatedly screams "death" and his cries are spliced and layered. The original uncut version is even worse apparently.
I love this album so much! Listening to this masterpiece everyday! My favourites: Gently (the phrase THIS MODE IS INCREDIBLE gives me goosebumps every time), Skin Ticket (KEEPING MYSELF ALIVE, oh my God, it's so sensitive), My Plague (it’s so underrated and amazing). Thank you for reaction!

Gently is genuinely my favorite slipknot song of all time Edit: I didn't make it to the part when u said Gently was your fav too, but DAMNIT finally someone gets it, also the title track (iowa) the main vocalist Corey Taylor if I'm correct was fully naked and breaking anything glass related and taking it and cutting himself with it and was making himself vomit, so yeah it's a pretty messed up song but still one of my favorites too
The first song off the start was when one of the members grandpas died and they just had found out and went straight to the studio to release their anger out which is why he’s tweaking out.
I think you should listen to Team Sleep. It’s a project that Chino from Deftones was a part of in 2005. The music is absolutely beautiful. It is slower than the stuff you’ve been listening to lately but if you’re ever looking for a good switch up in music pace definitely keep Team Sleep on your radar for a listen.
Man I remember how hyped I got when I first heard Corey scream “HERE WE GO AGAIN MOTHERFUCKER!!!” in People=Shit And I agree 100% with what you said about classic nu metal albums ending with a long, emotional, dark track I’ve always loved when they do that (even if sometimes it’s really disturbing).

Wait till you hear Volume 3 (their next album) totally different, but you will love it. One of the best hard rock/metal albums ever made. Imo. Its a masterpiece. Joey's drumming is insane too. Especially on the song "welcome" thats a banger.
They’re still on tour and releasing music btw. This year it seems to be more focused on Europe though. That being said, I know you’ve gotten through Deftones recently. Assuming you’re from Philly, they’ll be at Wells Fargo in April.
Slipknot (1999) and IOWA (2001) these are the best Slipknot albums because I haven't seen any post-Slipknot album surpass them. When they were doing a soundcheck in 2000, Joey pulled out People = Shit, a song that wasn't released until 2001. You can tell it's a demo because the tempo is slow and the phrases and riffs are different. You can see it in this video here: watch?v=5cO_jZbDjE4&t in 2:43. Joey wasn't the most technical or the fastest, but he was incredibly creative and will always be a legend.
