A. Borisov I’m going to say I don’t know, I was just fed up buying chain lube so I looked up how to make my own, it’s clean and lasts ages! As to how many miles it lasts, I can’t say for sure but much longer than the ones I used to buy. I’ll be able to update you once I have the bike running
Hey Kyro. Amazing video, I've used it for my bike. Now after only 100 km approximately my chain is kinda noisy. is that a sign of i need to rewax or is it just the way it is? Thanks again.
Pass the bicycle chain lube down through the generations. *150 years later* "This bicycle lube was my fathers, and his father before him, and his father before him" "...... What's a bicycle?"
Before applying the wax lube, is it sufficient to clean with a degreaser and white spirit, I have heard u need to use petrol too. What would u suggest? And should u use white spirits 1st or degreaser? And would just 1 of them be sufficient? Thanks
Krystian Pawlowski maybe, but you’d probably want something a bit more robust for a motorcycle as you wouldn’t want to be re waxing it every 2-300 km 👍
What about using something besides pariffin oil or liquid pariffin? It's anywhere from $12 to $15 per pint here. Walmart sells Florasens lamp oil for about $7 for 64 ounces but it doesn't list any ingredients, only that it contains petrolium hydrocarbons, so I'm not sure what it consists of. A pint of mineral oil is $2 and Kerosene is about $4 per gallon. Any thoughts?
PAG 46 auto ac compressor oil, nearly every parts store has 240mL for about 10$ or even less... tried it on my chain and it gave a very high end ceramic-synthetic lube like feeling in terms of noise and smoothness, also not messy and not smelly (slight rubbery smell that quickly goes away, and nothing else).
you're going to want to go to a vet supply shop of sorts and look for some food grade " liquid paraffin" or " Mineral Oil " some places call it " light liquid paraffin " and " light india ". But its essentially a laxative they give to constipated animals and the kind they use to make make up
im trying e45 cream with candlewax roughly 50:50. I found the lamp oil I sourced stank to high heaven (it had citronella in it) and the very roughly 50:50 with wax looked hopeful but absolutely didnt last: it was ultra slick and quiet but only for about 30 miles at which point chain sounded/felt dry again.
Lee Tanczos yeah I may have mixed it with too much oil as it’s wearing off too quickly, I’m gonna mix in more wax pellets to make it thicker so it stays on like the last lot I made. 👍 Best lube I ever had that first lot....
Kyro's House I was frustrated that the chain felt dry and noisy... I bought 3in1 oil and it that on the chain - it felt great, but was black in no time. I have some ptfe powder now, will try adding that to some of the oil and see how it works...
Lee Tanczos since this video I added about 500g more wax pellets, the mix seems to be about right now, the last mix was still on the chain but it was noisy, this time it stays on much longer. 👍
Kyro's House it seems we are looking for changing the mix, I have to admit I should be cleaning the chain thoroughly in between “melts”... the 3in1 I have now I think will clean off easily in white spirit / mineral spirits.
Yeah, been a bit busy looking after the boys this week, got maybe 2 or 3 more before it goes to the bike shop for building, bike fit and final build. Again, sorry about the framing...
Phil John I’m not sure, I just put it into Cook and when it’s melted I put it in. It does get to 100 C as my son put some water in it last week and the water boiled... 👍
Makan Tahi it’s all in the consistency of the mixture, to hard and it’ll flake off, to soft and it won’t stay on, so somewhere in between, it basically trial and error. Though more pellets to liquid, think I used 1kg wax to 600ml liquid... 👍
yes, i did it too, tested from softer mixture to harder, and most important is that surplus of wax on chain fall off from chain, when rotated, not stay on it like butter, i work with inductive heater to warm up the chain on bike and then put wax on it to clean and lube it, all process took about 6-8 minutes per chain/bike
i have video with this link ua-cam.com/video/ORA6xFPTZXU/v-deo.html , now it is little changed, switch is on inductive heater and can be operated by one hand , in other hand can be wax stick, and that way is faster
I just use a normal candle and melt into wax. Add nothing into it onto my cannondale super bike, it just works perfectly. Did not buy those so call professional or expert wax.
Seams awfully crumbly and grainy!!! Paraffin (Lamp) oil is not the same as Paraffin oil..... Exact proportions would help. I understand you can cut the wax with Xylene to make it more liquid for occasional aplication like with regular chain oils....Xylene evaporates leaving only micro Paraffin. Thanks Danny
Sonny Bee I’m not sure, I just mixed it until it was soft but not runny. You don’t want it too brittle as it will just fall off, too runny and it won’t stick. It was good for an experiment but I don’t use it anymore, I use molten speedwax. If you watch oz cycle he makes a great wax which is where I got the idea from. 👍
I used 10% paraffin oil. Also mixed in 10% ptfe. Easy peddling. Probably can go a gear higher on the harder trails. Some lamp oil is kerosene based. Make sure it is paraffin based.
Thanks for the video!
In comparison to the plain paraffin wax how many more miles are you getting between re-waxing? Thanks!
Kyro's House, thanks for the response!
Hey Kyro.

Thanks again.
I always go by the sound…if it’s squeaky (like a rusty chain) then I’d re wax it. 👍
@@KyrosHouseCycling cool thanks 😊
Just so I get this the right way.
If it scales right off the chain during rides it's because I need to put more oil in the mixture right? 😊
@@mattiass.nielsen506 yeah I would say it’s too waxy and needs more oil. 👍
Can i use an ordinary candle?
Boi Diaz provided its a parrafin wax candle, yes you could. 👍

Oscar Muffin hahahahahahhha I love it! 👍
Is paraffin oil the same as paraffin? As in what I would put in a paraffin heater £6/£7a gallon
James Kemp don’t think so but I’m not sure I only used it for this was lube. Sorry 👍
Paraffin, Paraffin oil, Lamp oil, all the same thing. Candles are made from paraffin wax.
@@DUBBERDUBBER thanks you said it so well.
How do you clean the chain off the excesses wax? mine is a complete mess, with tons of wax... ho do I easily get it away?
Jakub Badełek I would run the chain through a cloth or rag to get rid of the excess, just riding it will get rid of all the loose stuff though. 👍
Have a like at Bike Sciences, they go further than this.
We use on chains, cassettes,. Jockey wheels are sealed with a 20 s dip.
David Mordaunt nice sounds great I’ll consider this. 👍
Before applying the wax lube, is it sufficient to clean with a degreaser and white spirit, I have heard u need to use petrol too. What would u suggest? And should u use white spirits 1st or degreaser? And would just 1 of them be sufficient? Thanks
I just use chain degreaser in an ultrasound bath, dry them then wax the chain. 👍
i use floor wax as my chain lube, and it works exactly the same!
Ah cool, I’ve recently ordered some graphenwax from absolute black to try out. 👍
Is it just wax and olive oil?
Armor sports it’s parrafin wax and paraffin oil. 👍
Kyro's House ok thank you
You are adding too much oil. If the lube is in a fluid phase, then dirt will stick to it.
Try 5% oil for summer, 10% for fall spring, 15% for winter
David Mordaunt thanks for the tip. 👍
Hey!! I've been looking for numbers, had this problem with dirt. Do You refer to weight percent? That is 10% meaning 10g of oil on 100g of mixture?
Suitable for motorcycle chain?
Krystian Pawlowski maybe, but you’d probably want something a bit more robust for a motorcycle as you wouldn’t want to be re waxing it every 2-300 km 👍

Jeff Stone yeah I think I had lamp oil... as long as it’s parrafin oil it should be fine.. 👍

$15 per pint is nothing compared to commercially produced chain lube. Makes a lot more too.
The wax is cheap. The oil is cheap. Makes a large batch to treat the chain many times. It’s the ptfe powder that is expensive

Have you made notes on the mixture ratio between the paraffin oil and the wax?
It's almost 1:1 in my experience
@@amogh1773 By volume or by weight?
have you ever tried to use coconut oil as a chain lube?
Mihai Gabriel Szabo no I haven’t... is it any good?
i did a coconut bath after degreasing my chain.... its ok so far (200km)
nice! might try that in the future..
hello my congratulations how to make colored wax lubricant like Wend Wax?
I’m not sure what that is...? 👍
Drop a crayon or two into the mix...
Just wondering when you are going to post another video and here it is :)
Yeah, been a bit busy looking after the boys this week, got maybe 2 or 3 more before it goes to the bike shop for building, bike fit and final build. Again, sorry about the framing...
Is it candle wax
I think you could make candles out of it, but I can’t remember if it was specifically candle wax. 👍

Oz Cycle used a 1:1 ratio in his earlier videos.
Marc J I found it was a little more wax than liquid to be honest. 👍
I used 10% paraffin oil. Also mixed in 10% ptfe. Easy peddling. Probably can go a gear higher on the harder trails. Some lamp oil is kerosene based. Make sure it is paraffin based.
Your using the wrong stuff you need to use liquid paraffin NOT lamp oil
pronster1 it says liquid paraffin on the bottle. 👍 I use speed wax now though
No, he uses right stuff! Parafin oil equals lamp oil. This is the same stuff made of petroleum and burns in lamps. Nothing wrong with that.
