  • In this video, I show you how to put your whirlpool duet ghw9200lq into diagnostic mode, and how to remove and replace your drain pump motor. The drain pump replacement procedure will apply to kenmore, whirlpool, maytag and other front-loading washing machines. I also show you how to remove your strainer basket and clean it.

The clearest and most thorough instructions - I especially appreciate the notes on what a failed drain pump looks like, and how to run through diagnostics on my whirlpool. You allowed me to accurately diagnose the issue before I went about putting money into parts. Thanks so much. You saved me a ton of money, time, and stress.

Fabulous! I followed your clear instructions and found that my drain was packed with nearly $3 in coins, keys, a flossing pick, a bracelet, Nerf dart, tiny chain, single use eye drop container, etc. I cleaned out everything & using a Shop Vac, I sucked water from the main drain holes. Still didn’t work - the dreaded F-21 & SD codes. The pump motor was LOUD! Killed by all the debris. Husband was shopping for a new washer while I ordered from Amazon the entire system - motor & filter drum. I read the reviews and ordered the top rated, best reviewed part. Out with the old, in with the new! On my second load of laundry and all is working perfectly! Thank you so very much for your tutorial. Easy job that saves me $900. Bravo for you!

After the 1st repair man telling me my motor and bearings were shot, after I told him I knew it was a pump/sensor issues, and then the second repair man telling me he would fix my pump for $275, I turned to youtube. I've never fixed anything, but I figured if I can find a video, I can do it. I found several videos and yours was the best! I ordered the part on ebay for $27! and it arrived in 2 days. I put the laptop next to the washer and followed your steps exactly - then went to the kitchen to replace the new motor. I will say, getting the clamps back on the hoses was a challenge and I called the neighbor guy to help (I have pain issues in my hands). He got up and I finished securing the pump back in and connecting the electrical. Five loads later, it's working great! Thank you so much for your video and precise instructions. Saved me $275! Only thing now, I saw 2nd guy spill a bunch of water inside, and then I spilled some. Water is coming out the back and detergent slot side. I'm assuming it's water that spilled from the hose. After each load I'm tipping the machine back and towel drying underneath and behind. Each load is less water. Should i be concerned about the drum leaking somehow? I see no water at all inside now (around the pump area) - or will this dry up from the hose spill? Thanks!

Followed the video and got the WHIRLPOOL DUET SPORT up and running again.
Upon cleaning the filter canister I found the following: 5 quarters, 4 dimes, 3 nickels and 15 pennies. Looked in and found two rocks had jammed the impeller of the pump.
Cleared the pump and all is well in washer land.
Thank you for posting the video.

Woops! Ignore my previous post! Looked up the diagnostic codes and it said 03 was the hot water coming into the machine. Took me back to the beginning of my research when I turned the hot water off to untwist the hose before cleaning the pump clean out.
Thanks again for your wonderful video! Saved me a service call!

I wished I had found your video yesterday. It would have saved me $278.00. All the other videos that I found relating to my problem was not as detailed as yours so I was scared to take it apart myself. Thanks for posting this and I'm sure it'll come in handy should my pump go out within the year warranty.

I have been all over the internet and yours was first video I found that not only showed how to replace the pump but I could hear the noise it was making to compare to mine so I knew for sure it was the pump. I have a 9 year old Duet that I loe and I CAN fix this by myself. My husband is an OTR drive and won't be home for a month. I can't go that long without a washer. We have twin ganddaughters age 18 months that are here a lot. Ask your wife to hug you for me! I am so happy!

I was able to pull the filter and pump out of my Maytag Epic Z just by watching your video. There were several bobby pins that had caused an accumulation of stuff and it was jamming the pump blades/fins. I was able to needle nose all of it out. The filter also had an assortment of junk in it, including a house key. I put it all back together and now we wait to see if the hose clamps are on right. Didn't spend a dime, thank you soooooooo much You Da Man!!

10 year old video and the best I could find. I ordered a new pump for around $30 and hoping my whirlpool duet replacement is this smooth. My pliers are not spring and I didnt see the screw to remove the housing from in the washer so was reaching up in it doing all this. Thanks for the tips.

Thanks. Shop Vac idea saved me from a huge mess. Also it seemed to have sucked the sock that was stuck in the drain line right up to the pump connection. I pulled the motor out, found the sock & removed it, put everything back together, and voila... my wife was back in business! u da man...

The drain pump wasn't very efficient and slow. I opened up the pump housing tray as you instructed and found a bunch of junk out of my kids clothes pockets. I cleared the trash and reassembled as you instructed and everything is back to normal. Needless to say I am so very grateful for your post!!!!

CLEAR. CONCISE. COMPLETE. With a few variations from one machine to the next, and a quick bit of adapting to what is in front of you, this is the best video going for the F21 error. The shop vac fix for the water clean out saved me from a nightmare that I suffered through once already and noted a lack of in other video. Excellent and also removes any blockages from the hose in the process. NOTE when you go to test the washer on another load add about a 4 litres aka a gallon of water to the machine before starting as the pump is submersible. Again awesome video. Kudos.

You forgot to show them how to check and clean out the drain hose from the machine to the wall. There is a safety ball in there near the 90 degree point to wall that needs to be cleaned out. Check the complete drain hose so you don't replace the pump when you don't need to. I almost did, but a tech explained it to me. Thanks so much. Dave in Maine!

Paul. Thank you so very much bro! This video is excellent and on point. Not detail missed. I called a relative who owns an eltronics and appliance business and has a whirlpool washer and dryer. He guided me in the right direction to check the pump and see if a screw or something was lodged in there. But I didn't know how to put the machine in diagnostic mode and the manual just talks about checking for kinked or clog hose. Since it is Sunday I will be ordering my pump tomorrow or checking with a local guy who may stock it. Should be washing loads tomorrow night. PS, wish I would have watched this before turning the knob in the strainer and dumping 8 gallons of water on me and my basement floor, tools, clothes Etc. I did turn it back on and water cycled through and I was able to collect the 8 gallons in my shop vac on the second go round. Hopefully there is a little extra in your pay this week ;) Be blessed!

Handy (aka JRod) I followed your instructions and was able to continue using my Whirlpool Duet washmachine. Upon opening the strainer I noticed a piece of wood that must have been left in the pocket of a tenants pants. The washer still would not drain after cleaning the strainer. Since cleaning the strainer failed to resolve the problem I installed a replacement drain pump with one that I purchased online from Amazon. My unit has 3 Torx screws, not 2. Since the unit is mounted on top of a drawer it was much easier to access and drain the water. Thank you for your help. I may be a CPA by trade, but I truly enjoy working with my hands and seeing results. I am now actually looking forward to other things to break. Please let me know of other UA-cam videos that you have published. Vince from Baltimore, Maryland

One of the very best videos on the web. Complete with identifying the T20 bit! On mine, the impeller blade had broken off the motor shaft and was rattling around in the housing. One suggestion: Thanks to your close-up shots, I decided to remove the motor from the rest of the pump unit without removing the unit from the two hoses. Worked well.

Thank you so much. Your video made it easy to understand what I needed to do to fix my washer. As someone who has three different problems with my hands, making it very difficult for me hold tight onto pliers without my hand seizing, the only thing that I changed was to switch the existing clamps with stainless steel, screw-on hose clamps.

Great video. Good camera work to show the detail. I just cleaned the strainer on my unit a few minutes ago. You Tube is pretty awesome. Here are my suggestions: You can drain the pump by unscrewing the front screw, sliding it forward and then open the strainer plug allowing the water to drain into a pan or bucket if the unit sits on a riser. I would simply unplug the machine versus looking for the correct breaker. Saves time and much safer. Thanks again. Worth the watch.

Thanks for the video man...used it last week to install my new pump....back in business.....The only thing I can suggest to people going to attempt this repair is, what made it easier was using a pair of vise grip pliers on the clamp going from the drum to the drain pump....not much room to work in....squeezed the clamp all the way down with the vise grip and then it was able to maneuver very easily, once in place release the vice grip....made it a lot easier....thanks man

Thank you for the informative video! I suspected our pump was bad, but didn't know exactly what constitutes a bad pump since it would still run, just not move enough water. The impeller is loose and wobbly, so time to replace the motor. The wife wanted to buy a new machine, and ours being a Maytag I know it's rather reliable. Easier to replace the pump than to wrestle the machine out of the basement, and a new one in! Thanks again!

Awesome instruction - thank you! I just finished replacing my pump assembly and am doing laundry as I type. I wasn't even down for 24 hours. Unfortunately, I had to go out and buy a new wet/dry vac, but I found a sweet little thing called the Bucket Head at Home Depot. It was about $20 and fits on top of one of their $3 bucket. The price was right, and it doesn't take up nearly as much space as my old wet/dry vac. Oh, and the drain hose fit right into the side of it with no gap at all.

Electricians advice, unplug it! regardless of whether you turned off the breaker. The breaker only switches the hot side, it doesn't disconnect the neutral which can/does carry current.

Great video. I followed it to the letter. Note that lineman pliers or equivalent are needed to pinch the hose clamps (springs). I found that smaller pliers could not maintain the "grip" on the ends of the clamp and it took something bigger to manipulate them.

We didn't discover that our 2005 Whirlpool Washer had a strainer until it died in 2019. When I opened it it was filled with coins, bit drivers and other metallic objects, some of which were ccorroded beyond recognition. I looked in the user manual and discovered that there was no mention of the strainer. It would've been nice to have known about the strainer when we bought the washer 14 years ago.

Thank you for this infor., Helped me out a lot, however, noticed that the Kenmore Washer is pretty much the exactly the same with just different positions of rubber mounts, having looked more closely with my washer Kenmore 4pk it appears that my motor water pump looks to be hard wired not a clip/ "That Suck" I know, But All in all you nailed it for me with your video, Thanks for taking the time with this pain in the ass washer problem. cheers!!

Thanks for the idea of attaching the vacuum to the drain line. By doing so, I found a pair of women's underwear that was lodged in the rubber boot that goes between the wash drum and the pump housing/filter. I totally missed it on the first inspection and cleaning. By putting the vacuum on the drain, it pulled the underwear into the filter housing so I could find it the second time I opened it up.
