I see it has been over a year since you did this video, I found it very useful by means of quality information. I have some troubles on how to manage my "sags" in 20 gallon high and before getting into action I just wanna collect as much correct info as possible. Your explanations really gave an idea. Thank you.

Ah, i think i understand some of the confusion around this plant now. Had a ton of contradicting info on dwarf sag, people saying it got tall like valisneria if mot trimmed. Good to know that there is such a thing as actual dwarf sag.

Just found out I got narrow leaf sag! A bit disappointed cause I wanted to use it to carpet but it was helpful to know! Thank you

Love this! I don’t have to watch 50 different videos just to get this kind of information like what normally happens, thanks!

I have what I bought as narrow leaf chain sword. It looks a lot like the narrow leaf sagg. It didn’t grow much forever until I rescaped and moved it from one side of the tank to the other. Then it just took off. I use root tabs in sand substrate and good light. It’s about 5 inches tall. Baby fish hide in it. lol

Jaw dropped. Did not know but seems clear now: I bought narrowleaf sag from store and not dwarf sag as it was labeled. Planted in 10 gal and it grows to top of tank. Spreading nicely by runner, but really I thought I planted a short cute carpet plant! Finally makes sense:)

Love the videos like this. I have dwarf sag and I wasn’t impressed, however now I am going to pay a little more attention to it.

Nice, I got a sag from my lfs, and have always thought it was a dwarf, but now I'm pretty sure it's a needle leaf. My experience with it has been only a couple have gotten tall, I thought due to low light. It's been really slow for me, with low light, and floaters making it worse, no ferts. I'm surprised it survived a year of that, this stuff is nearly bulletproof, I got a new light and some tabs, hopefully that'll step it up. Love the broadleaf, keeping that in mind for a future tank

Can confirm about dwarf sag and narrow leaf getting mixed up. 2 weeks ago I bought dwarf sag from an online retailer and it's already grown 12+ inches. So much for my foreground carpet

I had a broadleaf sag that prospered for a few months and then declined to nothing. I suspect it consumed all of a particular substrate nutrient in its locality. Best guess? Potassium, or.....?

Does sag need root tabs or fertilizer liquid. I got some last week how long does it take to spread.

how long might it take for dwarf sag to produce runners? ive had a few of the plants in my tank, (no co2, low-mid light) for about a month. my val is producing runners like crazy, but my dwarf sag seems to just be growing downward with new roots. i did trim the roots a tiny bit before planting. did this affect the growth? the dwarf sag isn't buried in the substrate, either, they have maybe half a centimeter of roots showing.

So... I was sent the wrong one. Waaay bigger than it should've been and it also appears that the plant was given a haircut like you explained in the video. It is thriving now but in the back rather than the middle

I have a lot of Dwarf Sagittaria but have not had the other species. I was going to try to put some in dirt outside this summer and hopefully have it grow into a thick carpet for a project of mine. I like it a lot and keep it in Temps 68-80. One question about fertilization, do you fertilize it in the substrate? How much does it need? Also, in one of my tanks it grew some BBA as it seems to grow slowly. I have since used Seachem Excel that did not seem to harm the dwarf Sag and it cleared up the BBA. (along with water changes) Thank you for your videos and I will look at your website for my upcoming projects.

I've never had success with broad leaf sag. I have totally given up on them. I tried them with CO2 and higher light, added iron and used a nutrient substrate. They just will not grow.

Do you know of any grass (or grass-like) plants that do well with having their blades trimmed to keep them at a certain height? I thought Eleocharis montevidensis might be good, even that one's blades turn brown once cut.

I've hard four dwarf sag plants in my tank for a couple months now. Was really hoping they would carpet somewhat but they have produced zero runners they just sit there looking like tiny grass. Plant is nice and green though so I still have hope.

if you trim the tops of the leafs it will produce runners like crazy. If you don't have root tabs or ferts they will take forever to grow.

Does anyone have any ideas why my Water Sprite grows perfectly fine in my lil 10 gal tank but for some reason its struggling in my 40 gal tank. The 10 gal. is mostly shrimp with only few little fish, no special substrate, no CO2, nothing. Most of the time I don't even put the light on bcuz its close to the window and seems to be getting enough light throughout the day. The 40 gal one, I have eco-complete substrate, ill add Seachem Flourish sometimes, and it does grow but it keeps reabsorbing old leafs. I know it usually means not enough nutrients but it just doesnt make sense. The water is identical in terms of parameters. It as regular Fluval eco bright light on it. Overall basic stuff but it even seems like my Amazon swords and java fern aren't growing as good. The Water sprite seems like its sucking out all the nutrients in the water but its not even growing that great. I have 1 floating bunch, 1 I attached to sucktion cup to the glass, and i tried planting one in the substrate. Like I said, it does grow here and there but keeps reabsorbing old leafs which makes it look like crap and never gets that nice bright green color. Im sorry I know its off the subject but had to ask for myself. Any ideas would help. Thank you.

So both dwarf and narrowleaf varieties are called Sagittaria Subulata? Are they the same? Like can dwarf be grown out to become like narrowleaf, and similarly can narrowleaf be trimmed down to grow as dwarf? Anyone have experience to share? Thx

4:43 No, it doesn't "think", its just genetically predisposed to grow like that because of natural selection in evolution. If it didn't do that maybe it wouldn't have existed. But either way, there is no thinking involved.
