I'm from NYC, but live in Rome. The best way to avoid scams is to tap into your inner New Yorker: Don't talk to anyone and yell NO! when random people try to sell you anything on the street, or try to tell you a phony hard luck story. Walk with confidence and learn the art of the dirty look. Haven't been scammed anywhere in the world, and I've been to some pretty rough places..
I like it!
🗽🇺🇸💪🏽
Attitude. Now if I can just train my husband. He’s oblivious!
They set us up for a distraction in Rome. One stuck his hands in my husbands back pocket and everyone was startled. MY bag was slashed by a woman in front of me. She got nothing as my money and cards were in a back pocket towards me. We are going this summer and we are both using Travelon bags as they have locks on all the zippers. Slash proof bag and strap. I have taken this to Amsterdam and London. One look at my bag, they move on.
You know that’s a really good tip. I forgot to put out carrying the right kind of bad can make a big difference especially ones that are designed to be hack resistant.
What we also do is stand against the wall at d station, while one is doing any machine (ATM, tickets etc) one stands guard and watches while d other one does the transaction and it helps 😊
90% of it is just being attentive
Same here! We did that in London as gypsies were crowding us so I watched and he did the transaction.
Fill your pockets with barbed fishing hooks..👍
I may give that a try
😂
I carry a cheap, "fake" wallet. It has little fake currency "notes" and old, fake credit cards. The "currency" says "F*** You" in the native language. It's just great. I love it.
I was thinking of doing something similar good to hear somebody has my same sense of humor
@@RozierRoma If the given event is near my home, I carry little shopping bags. Contents ? Sealed Ziploc bags with dogsh*t in them. Sometimes I'll put in a fishhead, along with used toilet paper.
Nice!
@@ButcherBird-FW190D. How funny!!!!! 😂😂
Great tips - as always! Much appreciated ☺☺
Sure! Thanks for commenting
Really informative video. Like your examples and tips. We are visiting in October.
Glad to hear, have fun
Thanks Rozier. Very good tips!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this. I used to work at the New Zealand embassy in London, and Rome was the number one place for our people getting pick pocketed.
That does not surprise me. Thanks for letting us know.
I’m sure glad that’s not a problem in Rome. London is out of control.
Good advice.
Thanks for watching!
On our last visit to Rome we were having lunch sitting outside. I was sitting facing the street. Saw many people walking by scanning tables .. So yes they are out there. When traveling I wear pants with zipper pockets.
Yeah, zippers work. Anything not to be easy target that’s all you have to do.
Small but good chain from belt to wallet does the trick for me, same for cellphone.
That works for sure
Hi, I wish I would have seen this before my experience but I’d like to share it hoping it may be useful. I am a frequent traveler who takes some precautions and never had an incident before. However, I am getting older and me and my cousin with our little suitcases at Termini metro station in Rome, were the target to a nice well dressed Italian guy who spoke our language and didn’t look suspicious at all. I had a safety travelers purse across my chest I was wearing at my front, with locks on the zippers and I got pickpocketed anyway. Why? because we out stood as foreigners, were jet lagged , new to the city and made a couple basic mistakes. When the guy saw us trying to decide what direction to take, he told me he was going our same direction would tell us where to go. He directed us to an access tripod (that was an exit), and when my suitcase got stuck, he leaned over to help me, and it was then that “sticky fingers”took the cash I mistakenly placed inside the purse’s upper zipper after I bought the metro tickets. Fortunately my cousin had the safety belt you use under your clothes that I lent her and I was the only victim. My two basic mistakes were overlooking my mom’s first warning in life: do not talk to strangers (no matter how they look), now that I can think straight, why would someone I don’t know would help me? And the second mistake was placing all my cash (over one hundred euros) in the more exposed zipper instead of the inner one with double lock where my passport was. Something else I learned was these guys don’t work alone, they have back up people who observe what you do and where you keep cash or your wallet in your bags or purses, so they know how to effectively do their “job”. I still can’t believe how silly I was. Next time I’m taking a taxi to my hotel.
Yes a Taxi for sure! Yah in Rome if someone offers help they are suspect #1. Romans are nice and will help if asked but they do not usually offer to help on their own. If you need help just ask help families or people with a purpose not someone just hanging around. That is my 2 cents. It sucked being picked but it happens to the best. Thanks for sharing your story!
I purchased my husband Aviator travel pants, and they have zippered front/back pockets for wallets and other valuables.
That’s exactly what you need. Then you don’t have to worry about it and just enjoy the experience without the fear of being ripped off.
Thanks for this information, how much is a train ticket from the airport to Termini station? We are a party of 5 ladies we will be in Rome in April on route to Civitavecchia, we have an overnight in Rome. I have seen prices of taxis from the airport costing €50 to city central. 🤔🤔Thanks.
Taxis are €50 for up to four people you could probably negotiate €70 for five people express train is €14 per person and then a bus or taxi from there so it’s better to take a taxi from the airport directly to your hotel or Airbnb
@@RozierRoma. Yes. The first trip to Rome we took the train from the airport with luggage. Then, at the termini a cab to the hotel. Going home we just took the cab all the way to the airport. We didn’t want the hassle.
I bought a vest w interior zippered pockets.
You are good to go! Have a great trip
What do you think about those travelers moneybelts or neck wallets? Do they help prevent theft? Also, do the pickpockets snatch cell phones?
Anything you can do to make it harder works they will just look for an easier target.
Yes! They take phones off tables when you’re eating. One quick swipe…gone. People stick them in their pockets for “easy access” and the pick pockets know that. They watch. I am really going to have to watch. I take mine in and out of my bag taking photos.
use Anti theft back pack with padlock and use money belt with rfid
good advise
Using a backpack where pickpockets thrive is an open invitation to open them up and take what they 'need'. My relatives offered me the backpack and I said they were crazy. People don't like the truth as it turns out.
Most of the time when I am on the Metro I have gym closes in my backpack so I am not too concerned but many people have let me know my zippers have been unzipped when riding so they are trying. One gur let me know just the other day he was picked on the metro and just a few minutes later another gut tried to pick him again. The problem is real.
I love backpacks and travel with them all the time. Just have the ‘right’ one. Mine is slash resistant. Nothing is slash proof with enough will. And I literally put a suitcase combo lock on the main compartment zipper. And I wear it on my back. Short of an aggressive confrontational mugging. The chances of anything going missing is highly reduced.
I’m older, 6’2”, athletic built and trained in MMA. There is a certain confidence, stare…whatever it is that most people leave me the fuck alone. I got followed twice in Paris. I turn around and motion ‘come on. Let’s go’. They see that and walk away in the opposite direction. I look at everyone near me and keep my wife in contact with me. Use your wits and don’t take the innocent trusting attitude that North Americans are used to.
You’re not the target. There’s too many easy targets out there to bother with you and honestly there’s enough easy targets to keep them busy.
@@RozierRoma I totally agree. Easy targets are their bread and butter. And I thank you for putting out videos like this to warn and make aware for those who wander around Europe thinking it is a utopian paradise free of the ills of North America when it is the same shit just a different place.
Well said
As a American citizen is it necessary to carry a passport at all times wheh walking in public? Why tho? Who will be asking for it?
No, you do not need your passport on you. Take a picture of it just in case somebody’s to see it. They will need it when you check into hotels, that’s about it. You’re trying to get a tourist Sim card for your phone. They will also need to show your actual passport to get that. That’s the only times I can think of perhaps there’s others. Best just to carry a copy
Coming in two weeks
enjoy Rome!
Everybody gets picked in Rome .The only way to avoid it is to carry a little cash but all the rest inside your clothes across your chest.
I suppose you right, If you are in Rome long enough you will at one point get picked
@@RozierRoma Yes and learn.
Its a BIG problem.
They have 1 big problem but better than a lot of big problems
Why is the police not catching them…are they hand in gloves ????
They take other crimes much more seriously and pickpockets no, not to cross the line
Use their same tactics and pretend to be a pickpocket so they avoid you 😂
Who knows that may work
I noticed these pickpocket people never want to talk to you .or have a conversation. All they want is help! If i am going to help you at least lets talk😂. Tell me dont jusr beg.
there too busy working
With that logic. Why don’t muggers just talk to their victims.
@@jasonkrick1614 when caught they don't want to talk. Or even when before they don't want to talk. I love to observe in public. People watching for any potential people
What the police fools doing😅😂
Eating pizza I suppose
Seriously sir, are you high or what. A scam is a scam..Whats ok for you doesn't mean it has be ok for everyone. A murderer is a murder , be it a 14 year old or a 30 year old...
I appreciate your point, but please understand. Most scams in Rome still give you something that you weren’t expecting to purchase or donate to you’re out maybe five dollars but if you pickpocketed you’re gonna be out of wallet, money, credit cards, and maybe even a passport it’s gonna cost you €125 to replace and a headache. If somebody hands you a rose and then expect you to give them five euros for it so you give them five euros you got a rose, even though you didn’t want one and you kind of feel scammed, but you’re not out that much plus you did get a rose. if someone takes a picture with the gladiator and then wants €10. Yeah, you kind of got scammed as you thought it was free but you did get a picture with the gladiator. Not the end of your day. If somebody tells you to sign a petition to end drug use in Rome, and then they sneakily persuade you to donate to the cause and you do. Yeah, it went to a scam organization, but you’re really not out much if someone hands you a bracelet and says that it is free and after you have it, they would then want you to pay money and you’re in an awkward situation so you give them five euros. Yeah you kind of got scammed but you did get a bracelet and it’s not the end of your day. Most scams in Italy are harmless. Being pickpocketed cannot only ruin your day, but in some instances ruin your vacation.
China is a lot safer.. Have you ever thought of going to China?
My Sone is in Shanghai now as his wife is from there and I one day would love to visit China. I speak Italian and well that is where my heart is but one day I will visit China.
Rome, the city of Thieves!
Many cities have worse problems
Don't go to Italy, otherwise you will always have to worry about something, it will never be a relaxing holiday.
Prepare yes, worry no. Not sure where you are from but for most people there are more things to worry about in our home town than in Rome. If you are looking for a more relaxing place to stay may I suggest Tivoli? A small town just a short train ride away from Rome so you can still visit without many of the worries.
