What is the material on the outside of the unit? Looks like Velcro or nonskid sandpaper? Is it there to help keep them in ace in the pouch? Thanks!

Velcro, not sure if it is designed for a certain brand of magazine pouches that might have velcro but my mag pouches do not have any velcro on the inside but these work just fine.

Yeah, the pouches that Esstac sells have velcro inside to help keep the wedges in place. If you're using different pouches it may be a good idea to glue and/or stitch some velcro to the inside to help keep the wedge in place, but if you don't plan on needing to do any "hard use" with your gear it probably won't be a big deal.

With these I think it is about right. I think it might vary depending on the magazine pouch. If you look at their feedback it is very positive from many people.
