Honestly to me, if you choose Partitio as your MC, he becomes like the typical shonen anime protag that somehow just wins everything with positivity and belief in himself and others. Most of the others either have such dark and depressing back stories or journeys through the game, and then I do Partitio's chapters and his music kicks in and it just makes me smile
Crystaal earlier: *sees dead guy with his throat slit* "hes just sleeping" Crystaal later: *sees bedsick person* lets poison him >:D gotta love that duality
Agnea will always be my favorite. Her story may have the lowest stakes of any story, but i find that to be its benefit. There isnt some huge drama or anything, just a girl who loves to dance and make people smile, all the while refusing to lose sight of her dream. It doesn't NEED to be anything more complex than that and I really enjoy it. Even the main 'antagonist' of her story isn't evil or anything, just got so caught up in her ego that she forgot what brought her to superstardom in the first place til Agnea reminded her. Its just honestly refreshing to have an RPG story be so lighthearted and low stakes, Agnea's story is the only one which left me smiling and satisfied from start to end. What truly made her story even more special for me was ending the 8 stories with her since she was my protag, and ending with Agnea literally having written her own final boss theme. Like by that point I was already aware of each traveler's theme being incorporated into their final boss, but the Song of Hope is genuinely on another level and completely blew me away that I ended the 8 stories in such a glorious fashion.
tbh I have two problems with Agnie's story. -The end, where Dolcinea says "go and shine like a star", Agnea should have been like "the night sky is vast, and there are more stars than you can count! Why should I be the only one?" Would have been sweet as heck. -Her story... I struggle to think of any possible links of her story to the whole Vide summoning thing.
@@BlueCrimson10 The only real 'link' Agnea has to the overarching plot is that one of the traveling performers she met, Tanzy, was involved with Mindt and all her talks about god were actually about Vide. TBH while I can understand wanting Agnea to be connected to the bigger plot events, I feel like she doesn't NEED to be directly connected. Think of how many countless RPGs have party members that don't have huge personal stakes in the climax yet are involved anyways. Nothing says that Agnea's own reason for fighting for the dawn can't be something as simple as wanting to bring smiles to the world no matter how dark it gets before the dawn.
The problem with Agnea's story being a low stakes one is that she doesn't have any character development in the story at all A good example of a low stakes story is Alfyn from the first game where in his chapter 3, he begins to doubt himself and questions his purpose in life, this continues in his chapter 4 and gets resolved at the end of his story Agnea doesn't have any of this and she basically starts the story as an innocent upbeat person and ends the story that way It also doesn't help that her story isn't very interesting imo. I never really had any desire to see her get over her stories hurdles because she didn't have any (or at least any interesting ones) If she were a more dynamic character or had an interesting development it could have worked but her story just felt so dull (Her connection to the main plot is also garbage which is also why I didn't like Tressa along with everything else I said about Agnea)
@@The-O-N Counter point: Not everyone NEEDS to go through some big major character development to be a good character. Agnea shines in her simplicity and thats what i honestly really enjoy about her. Shes an emotional pillar who uplifts others when they're down, and a lot of people overlook the value of such a character. She sees constant and frequent examples of people losing hope and generally for good reason, but instead of letting it get her down she does what she can to lift *them* up. And honestly i find that really inspiring
"Still has so much more room for improvement tho so I'm honestly not sure I'd play a 3rd one if they continued with this series. " God DAMN Crystahhl =/ I loved this game so much.
I do find that kind of funny, since I walked away from OT2 thinking "There's still a lot of room for improvement, I can't wait to see if there's going to be a third one."
Omgggg we need like an extras to this because these streams got chaotic and funny as hell through the bewildering grace run. Thanks for the great video
Nice timing, I just beat the gane yesterday. Absolutely loved the whole game and it's characters to the point that I can't genuinely pick one favorite.
Yeah currently top contender for Game of the Year for me. Trails To Azure is next closest but couldn't top it by virtue of being a PSP game (if the technical parts of it were better, it might have matched OT2).
Oh, the Bewildering Grace run is currently set to private! Anyway, I'm really glad you gave this series another shot, when I know you weren't super fond of the original. There's so much magic in it for me, and the improvements from the first game were pretty significant in some sometimes very subtle ways. It might be my favourite JRPG of the decade.
They did a somewhat better job of it in this game, but then the final 5% of the game where they actually all just participate in scenes like a normal RPG happens and it’s like a splash of cold water - “oh, right, why hasn’t this been happening the whole time” lol
@@DeadpoolsChimiChanga The whole game, all I can picture is everyone standing just out of scene during character's stories standing around all bored and just waiting. It's such a jarring disconnect for me. It's not as bad as the first one I guess as they have those 'floating in a void talking' moments sometime. But yah...
@@Kasaaz They also have connected paths now, stories where two of the characters interact a fair bit. It's getting closer, I just wonder if full interactivity would ever work with the freedom of picking your main character and collecting new party members that each have multi-chapter stories.
I wonder if Crystal would enjoy Trails in the Sky. Not only does it have one of the best female protagonists in anything I've played it just has some amazing characters in general (Olivier *cough*) It is a bit slow for some people but that never bothered me, it's like building a massive lego set. Takes a bit of time and dedication but once you get into it the payoff is so massive that it's unlike any other series out there. Lore and Worldbuilding is insane, like Mass Effect used to be.
It is always so hard to recommend...but damn I love this series so so much. Recently I've gotten my friend into it and she is LOVING it (currently she is going through Sky 3rd).
I just started watching Crystal and thought this immediately! .... I am morally obligated to suggest Trails in the Sky to any breathing person to be fair 😅
I somehow very often disagree with Crystal's opinions about games or stories etc. For example, I really enjoyed Agnea's story because of its wholesomeness, tho I may be a bit biased because I picked her as my starting traveller. That being said, Crystal clowning on Agnea's story is probably the funniest part of this video lmao
Agnea does have the weakest connections to the overarching story, but her journey of inspiring hope in those who need it contrasts perfectly with the antagonists’ despair and nihilism.
I loved Octopath 2 so much. The stories and gameplay, as well as the characters are all phenomenal. Throné, in my opinion, had the best story! I really love the complexity of her character. My favorite character would probably be Partitio. He’s a really awesome guy.
17:03 when I had first played this and it was like a month ago when I reached that point, I started crying because of how much Malaya was to Castti and I couldn’t stand seeing that 😔😭
0:21 Nope. 0:41 It just means she can flirt with people to get them to give her things. Instead of what I thought was to give them all Lap Dances. Because she is a Dancer. 0:50 Emerald could have prolly set the ship on fire and then taken a lifeboat to shore. Instead of just...IDK burned himself alive? Then sank the lifeboat afterward to leave no evidence. 1:23 His fellow Gods sacrificed themselves to give him their power. Because Evil is stronger than Good I guess the lesson is? And by 'sacrificed' I mean they took a big nap afterward. 1:33 Who wouldn't want to start a game in Literal Godmode? 2:21 It never explains how a 100-foot monster fits through a 10-foot door in the front of the church. 2:35 It's like Batman's Detective mode. Except for nothing like that. 4:15 This girl is funny. 4:25 Guess they asked George R.R. Martin to write their death's description. Had to go all hard on it. Instead of something simple like 'He was killed from behind.' 5:09 Who is? Hikari: I have to stop my evil brother from conquering the world. Ochette: I have to stop a great darkness from destroying my Island. Agnea: I want to make people smile with my Dancing. Everyone else: Yeah, we are gonna put that storyline on the back burner for now. 5:59 We all knew she was gonna be the main villain. Mostly because she acts evil and there isn't anyone else it could be. Like zero other suspects. 6:08 Nope. Not this Chapter. 6:27 Umm.. she doesn't. 7:51 Not lame. Practical. Most of the characters have only one elemental power. But can use a couple of weapon types. 7:57 There should just be a counter for every time she is wrong. 8:57 The only reason I'd chase after a girl when I was 9 was to scare her with a big, ugly toad I found. 9:04 No, he is the World's worst businessman that somehow comes out on top. 11:15 She literally doesn't. They say all the stories intertwine at the end. They lied. 11:46 Temoenos has the worst luck with women. Every female NPC (except Mindt) tries to kill him. A whole lot of sexual innuendos for a game that looks like it's for kids. 12:28 Also, a lie. I think he stabbed her in the chest. 12:54 You could make a drinking game out of every time you hear maniacal, evil laughter. But would prolly die from alcohol poisoning before the game finished. 13:03 It won't. 13:40 Having Final Fantasy 7 flashbacks. 13:58 Writer's strike? 15:15 Mission Impossible. 16:19 So this boss comes out of nowhere with zero backstory. We know his name and he is immortal and impregnated more women that singer. 16:58 Calling the town Sperm Bank would have been too much on the nose. Besides, there is already a town with the name 'Bank' in its name.19:09 Wait...what? Where did this scene come from? I take it back. All the female NPCs are out to get him.
Octopath 2 is my GOTY for 2023. It was everything I wanted it to be and more. Temenos is the biggest surprise fave I've ever encountered in gaming.
Temenos was probably one of my favorite characters just because he is the bestest troll ever.
