there were only 2 pods on that supply raid, because chosen always replace one pod... so easy mission = 3 pods normally = when you have no fog and only see 2 it means guaranteed chosen
31:33 Wow, the knowledge I'm picking up from these videos is amazing. I never thought about how partial cover would affect crit chance when attacking patrols from concealment! That's huge.
I have just started watching this series, and want to say that it has helped me so much. I would always struggle with Xcom because I saw it as an almost trench warfare, with both sides trading shots from full cover. I'm still not the best, but you are definitely a pro, and your tips have really helped.
I really like how you use the evac zone as a safety net.. this noob never would have thought of that. cheers for the vid Ranor... Yes, and I have to say edu-taining, as I don't want you to think otherwise; I started it, so I have to stay consistent. :)
The way you beat the first mission was insanely good! It makes me realize how many fiddly little game mechanics details there are that you really have to understand/memorize to get good at this game. The recovery and eventual flawless mission was so good to watch
Molivos Yeah, the difficulty of XCOM comes from just understanding certaim key ideas. Once you learn it, the game is easy. Its just that actually learning this info is hard without someone showing it to you.
I have been playing this game for 2 years, and I still am learning things I actually did NOT know about from your videos. You definitely have this game down pat! Great job.
Man, I love Christopher Odd and watch his series on and off for years. And I can beat Xcom2 on a tier below Legendary... but this series is making me think more and more maybe I can get up to Legendary status! It also has helped me more than just sitting in awe of Odd and actually get better at the game (this is in no way a knock on Odd, he's a fucking God and I love the man). I've never really been able to deal with the Assassin before and showing the trick of moving the Reaper up and the rest of my troops backwards... I would have never thought of that. I also got instant success just watching your first two videos more than I ever have finding out that grenades and swords are the way to go and I should stop fiddling around with Specialists at least early game. I still bring a sniper because I love the idea of squadsite with shadow Reaper but that stems from fear of not being able to win an encounter. Maybe I should just rock like 2 swords, 2 grenadiers, 1 hero or sniper and see how it goes early game. Maybe I'll actually not just try to hide all game and hope for a remote start or squadsight in impossible distance to save me from real encounters! Hahah But yeah endlessly helpful, instant sub, WONDERFUL presentation. So much information, so easy to listen to and see and understand, and so QUICKLY done. A true MasterClass in instructional videos.
I ran my reaper right into a advent trooper patrolling outside of the compound and alerted another and my reaper got caught out in the open cause it was a yellow move. Then Bradford yelled at me saying the compound is alerted and they are searching for the squad. Lost a noob grenadier but got Mox out and my reaper only got wounded from a no cover crit. My ranger, whom just earned the nickname monster lol, made 2 silent sword kills to save us. Got super lucky with a claymore and remote start combo to blow up the wall and a muton and mec that were taking cover in a building the whole time instead of coming out and destroying the rest of my squad. If not for this video I definitely would have squad wiped and it would have ended my campaign, big thanks to Ronar
Just take notes of what I do that's different from yourself and that will up your commanding by a ton.

This is not reflecting the games difficulty though because he manipulated the game so the most difficult mission didn't come up. Assasin, Lost AND Advent.
I am replaying the game since I haven't beaten it yet, and I am watching your vids so i can look for some habits and i must say you need to have more views. Your the best UA-camr I've seen that isnt fake and is a great instructor and guy. I subscribed and liked very episode I've seen, thanks man your great. I hope to binge some more of your stuff.
I had a resistance camp mission where the assassin tried to charge at me through a building and ended her turn surrounded by like four or five resistance NPCs. Funniest mission I’ve ever had.
Not bad how you dealt with an Assassin. For me it was far more difficult as I was fighting in an area similar to how first she appeared. She went into building with her first turn, then with second run through street and entered into my second floor. Made a hit and retreated beyond line of sight. I find her OP, because she has ridiculous mobility and one shots anybody and has free sprint afterwards. I often find that I have no way of finding her before she finds me. While this mission was easy and best case scenario for dealing with her like you had lucked out with her on a first encounter too, I'm keen in seeing how you deal with her further. She was a complete headache to me at that level until my troopers got leveled up.
I personally didn't like the Long War mod in XCOM, so I never bothered with it in XCOM 2. I put in hundreds of hours on XCOM and beat the game on Ironman Classic difficulty, but Long war was just way too hard. Too many enemies, the enemies were too advanced, and the mission requirements were too absurd, especially the terror missions. Just no fun at all. Anyone who complained XCOM was too easy should get their fill dealing with the Chosen in XCOM 2.
rescue for captured soldiers or knock out and snag a vip if u havem use wraith armor you can phase thru walls carrying the knocked out subject :) makes dash in and out stealth strat amazingly useful
Very well done! Watching this video series made me feel like a fool. There are those people who just get how things work based on thoughtful observation, and then there's the rest of us...
I personally don't believe in the idea that some people are THAT much better than other people. Rather I think hard work and dedication are a huge part of being good at the things you see. While I may seem like a smart guy who's a master of XCOM tactics, what you don't see is over 5000 hours of XCOM played from my stream. I started out as a complete XCOM noob without the slightest clue of what's going on just like anybody else. I think anyone can do great things once they've put in the amount of time and effort into it.
@@Ronar222 Well said, and thanks for putting your skills into perspective. It's easy to overlook how much effort any kind of mastery requires, and I guess XCOM is no exception there. That being said, your play style and reasoning seems to be extremely refined, so I wonder how many people could accomplish this with diligence alone. Anyway, thanks to your videos my play style has improved dramatically already. Now I mainly need more practice in proceeding more cautiously on the map, to end up more often on the ambushing side than on the being ambushed side ;).
I just did this mission and 4 grenades (two grenadiers) was not enough. Back wall wouldn't break open and didn't collapse after a few turns. But I've done this with claymore before. I don't know if sometimes the wall is actually indestructible or something was glitchy about my grenade placement.
So you are saying there are different types of prison mission walls? Or that the pillar I tryed was simply undistructable ? Did your pillar break because it was next to a window or had a ladder on it or what how do you tell? because the alien alloy walls are normally undestructable to frag nades but the wall fell because the pillar it was built on was destructible?
Extracted mox and it gave me a mission failed. This is really frustrating given how many times I would kept squad wiping on the first retaliation, and this is the farthest I got. I did everything right and the game just screws me.
I think this strategy against the assassin only works with a Reaper or maybe a ranger with phantom. It is a excellent strategy, however. I didn't know that we could reveal her automatically as she moves (as long as you have her flanked after she moves)
Loving this so far, I've only mastered "commander" difficulty but the difficulty spike between the two difficulties has been too much for me. This makes me want to try again. Also. Was there a reason not to grapple and grenade instead of taking the shot with the skirmisher at the assasin?
Makes sense, it was just the action was so damn quick it didnt even look like you considered it. But hey, you have a fast brain. I've gotten further in legendary than i ever have as of writing, it might be placebo or it might be this series.
My God, I've played the Mox Rescue mission a dozen times and have NEVER done what you did. Totally face-palming myself. Brilliant stuff! Out of curiosity, what is the advantage of double-dashing the reaper in concealment over doing a blue move then yellow move? I mean, other than one less click. Seems riskier to do a full double move under concealment.
fun fact you can use wraith armors phasing to do a dash and grab on any knock out and grab vip who isnt in the open or on knocked out rescue soldier missions you can still go thru walls while carrying them :) also useful for getting someone bleeding out outta the line of fire quickly.
Had reinforcements drop in on my first guerrilla op. Double lancer and priest. Never seen that before. Somehow made it out with only 2 wounded. Also sometimes when a pod activates one in the group will not move and simply shoot(similar to mech going on overwatch), this is also confusing. Any guidence would be appreciated :) P.S for context I'm attempting leg ironman with no mods
Watching the first part of the video I see you train a lot of grenadiers, in my play I always keep at least 3 back up snipers/reaper and train them to elite ASAP, idk in WOTC they are so important by the pistol and sharpshooter skill, even I don't say they are op yet, one of them can kill a chosen in one turn.
Coming to this video late, but jeez ive been playing Xcom 2 on and off due to a dodgy PC. Your tips might actually make legendary feel a bit more possible for me.
I do rescue same way just that i go around left part of the map (unlike right part of the map that you took) but I bring specialist just in case I can get increased hacking
one thing I come back to this video to say is that don't do this 22:34 it will always kill your operative if you have plasma grenades 1 grenade is enough
unfortunately I killed my random sergant ranger with the claymore plasma grenade (I forgot about plasma grenades destroying more cover) RIP stabyou inthefront
Many mods can do what long war can and tbh i never liked lw i remember something about cover not doing anything or something but despite that you dont have to play vanilla there is a lot of class mods or enemy mods like a better advent for example
The cover not working is a bug of base XCOM 2 that LW2 devs couldn't fix. The thing about all these other mods is that they only touch on the tactical layer, but none of them ever tried to fix the strategic layer's issue of just scan and do missions. Interacting with a complex strategic layer was one of my favorite parts of Long War, but its not necessarily everyone's cup of tea so I can understand that not everyone is into LW2.
Interesting that Target Definition is a "player mechanic", but the mods that show to where enemies can see you is not. Not hating just interesting how we justify things. Your videos are great.
If you can't get the mod due to console you can count 17 tiles from the enemy for their exact range. It matches exactly with the range they can shoot from. Also the vanilla icons that show up where your cursor is exactly 17 tiles. The mod just makes it much more visible.
Couple of other rules not mentioned in the video (since it never was brought up), if mind control is on cool down and no zombies are in play, they won't just sit there and do nothing. If you flashbang they can't cast spells. If multiple sectoids are in play for some reason they try to avoid chain mind control/zombie summon so they end up shooting. You could also have been behind one of the bugged cover spots in this game. Lots of cover on many maps actually do not function properly and act as if you're flanked.
Maybe, I don't really know if assassin cares about hunker besides vs the shotgun that she almost never uses. I just hit the overwatch all button to end my turn faster.
I watch these videos and get so pumped to take on normal Ironman, then none of the pods do anything like yours and I lose. Out of curiosity, have there been updates or something that make where nobody ever stands in an area where two enemies can get hit with a grenade? I’m jealous.
Sometimes things don't patrol in ideal ways, and you either lose a few turns waiting or go right away. Generally, engaging right away with a kill shot is better than waiting. So if a pod is moving in difficult ways, start with a sniper and try to do major damage to a high threat target like stun lancer. After they scramble and take cover, classic grenade to expose and then volume of fire is the way.
@@barretthurd6672 Try to avoid placing yourself in a position where missing 1 80% shot ends the run. When selecting units, try and pick more rangers to do the point blank flanks since shotguns get 100%. Avoid using specialists since they do low damage AND do not have guaranteed hits. A specialist flanking a trooper actually only has a ~75% chance to kill because not only do you have to roll the hit, but you also need to roll the damage or crit. Also when you have the choice on which units to use to take risky flanks, make sure the person doing it is at full hp so even if you miss the enemy is unlikely to kill.
@@Ronar222 when you say “shotguns get 100%” what do you mean? My colonel ranger missed a point blank, flanking shot like 30 minutes ago lol wtf am I doing wrong to have such suboptimal contact? Do you have the weapon mods set up differently, maybe? What do you gear each class up with?
Is there a reason why you didn't put your squad in overwatch and then use the claymore to hit all three in the squad and then your over watch would have cleaned up the rest.
Logical Mindset The claymore was far more useful taking out the Chosen than a pod of enemies; she’s guaranteed to screw you up if you’re not careful or lucky
Huh. I tried the rescue mission like that. The evac didn't trigger when I blew a hole in the wall, I had to hack the door, even if I already had Moc in my hands. Also, I couldn't pick where the evac zone ended up. Is that randomly determined? A mod? A Legendary-difficulty trait?
Ronar Hmm, I might have taken out a pod that was in the way, I don't remember. I still had concealment afterwards (though the security level did get raised from the explosion, I saw yours stayed at 1. No pod nearby enough or something). I just remembered I was annoyed that I thought I'd come up with a clever trick and the game refusing to acknowledge it. But that may be a bug. It's the main reason I don't set Xcom 2 to Ironman, I just try to self-enforce it. I've run into campaign-ending bugs (UFO intercept on globe gets stuck in a loop and locks the game, level loads in complete darkness) too often to want to risk not having a save to recover. Thanks for the info though. BTW, do you have a tip for a good Long War tutorial besides playing vanilla? I'm a bit more of a casual, and I tried starting a long war campaign several times, but never really got into it. But it does look good, so I want to give it another go.
WOTC is kicking my ass clean off and I'm on Commander without Ironman. I used to rip the shit out of XCOM and Enemy Within, I even stomped XCOM 2 a little bit too. But WOTC? This is full on face fucking me senseless. It's like the timers want me dead and the tactics I use are worthless!
What mod do you use tyo not get spotted as soon as you use an action like granade and stuff? I always get high alert as soon as i take an offensive action no matter what. (entire squad except reaper)
@@Ronar222 It was actually in video number 1 but i just rewatched it and i was wrong, i totaly missed the "reveal" all thing and the sectoid just sat there for no reason so i thought you where not revealed. My misstake. (around 17:10 in E:1) Anyway, i love this series. Great job on it.
Right? These mods he's using would've been insanely helpful for the console version. It's almost a different game with how much info he has. I'm actually a little skeptical that what he's doing is the "right way" to play the game.
I know this video is older but could you explain to me why specialists/snipers are bad? I feel like the healing ability of the specialists is pretty useful for saving your troops when stuff goes wrong.
I agree all. Specialist are bad, with careful playstyle I don't need much of their healing capability late game, in the other hand Sharpshooters are just too good with their skills, especially when you equip them with superior trigger (+bluescreen, ap rounds), also reapers with the spraying skill and superior magazine.
So I just did this mission on Commander. Took a Gren, a Spec and a Ranger. My Reaper was injured and couldn't go. Took as much time as I could going around and taking as much time as I could. Failed the Hack. The evac was all the way back at the entrance of the jail (I wasn't able to pick my own evac point... was that patched out to make it harder?). Had the Ranger carry Mox out and just double move all the way to evac. Was made by a trooper and couldn't get my last two out. Lost my Spec and my Gren. I try to be zen like you but I just felt really delated after that. I see people on UA-cam finishing this with no deaths and it's like... not a fucking chance. You obviously have a lot of knowledge about this game. I wonder if you have like a video just about what to do generally like build order, tactical map, mission order, best practises. I mean I guess I could watch 20 hour long videos to learn but... that seems like a big ask.
If you do the hack and are "caught" then they move the evac. You need to do it like I did and blow up the back wall without being seen if you want to just be able to throw your own evac.
I beat XCOM2 with DLC on normal difficulty and started WOC on veteran iron man and got wrecked. Kept dying 1-2 each mission but second time encountered the assassin on a supply crate mission plus the lost all in one map. I was completely overwhelmed and when the Reaper died I kind of gave up. Restarted the game on normal haha…too many new mechanics to learn.
@@cobrazax Try it again and if it still happens then maybe it was patched. Although I find that hard to believe because firaxis hasn't worked on this game in like forever.
i loke that he fast forwards through the boring parts. . but. .why does he still do commentary during the parts he fast forwards through? like when he's recording it, does he know he's just just gonna speed up that footage? because when it speeds up, the commentry speeds up too
Hey guys, could someone help me out please? I'd like to know how to enable the little tactical information panel above the health bars. The one that shows the aim percentange, movement range, etc. Thanks guys

the best way to achieve iron man is by backing up savegames.
Oh my!! Why don't I throw down my own evac zone? Seriously! Thank you I always thought I had to use the missions Evac Zones...
The mod just makes it much more visible.
how do you get all them numbers over thire heads ?
and is there a big diffrence in playing xcom 2 and not the expantion?
Did you fight any of the alien rulers in this campaign? Don't remember if you enabled that particular DLC or not.
Thanks for letting me know, I'll look for them.
literally just got crit shotted by a sectoid while my guy was in high cover. donno what you're talking about.
Lots of cover on many maps actually do not function properly and act as if you're flanked.
against the assassin , wouldnt hunkering down instead of overwatching provide a benefit?
Maybe, I don't really know if assassin cares about hunker besides vs the shotgun that she almost never uses. I just hit the overwatch all button to end my turn faster.
Watching how he does a rescue mission makes me feel really really stupid
@@Ronar222 this is my exact approach! My issue currently on legend is just the overwhelming volume of missed 80%+ flank shots. They’re rough.
@@barretthurd6672 if you're point blank with a shotgun, missing should be impossible unless you're dazed or something.
Are you going to play Mutant Year Zero Road? Its a NEW game that plays a lot like XCOM 2. Its on Steam
People have recomended it to me. Its something I'm considering.
not a lot of people watching this videos anyways... "105.000" people watched this just 5 years after release.
But it does look good, so I want to give it another go.
for me i could place the evac zone wherever i wanted...even beyond the default evac zone
Everything is vanilla gameplay. We were probably out of the 17 tile detection range.
I'm rereading what you typed and I think I misunderstood what you asked. What time did it happen?
@@Ronar222 It was actually in video number 1 but i just rewatched it and i was wrong, i totaly missed the "reveal" all thing and the sectoid just sat there for no reason so i thought you where not revealed. My misstake. (around 17:10 in E:1)
Anyway, i love this series. Great job on it.
It always makes me sad how much PC has over consoles like mods, ease of use, etc.
Right? These mods he's using would've been insanely helpful for the console version. It's almost a different game with how much info he has.
I'm actually a little skeptical that what he's doing is the "right way" to play the game.
how are you lucky enough to get all the transmitters that close to spawn?
edit: and not be underground
If you grenade before, you destroy cover giving a lot more percentage to hit. You're really lucky, like really.
Often had indestructable walls in evac missions. Also why not use a free hack to get the chance for some nice Intel or sth. else? It's free
The walls go down after a turn, failing a hack reveals you and places an unmovable evac zone that requirea fighting, not exactly free.
omg you make it look so easy
It definitely doesn't have to be hard!
Why am I hearing anime voicelines
why u ignore your supply drop? it disappeared
Supply drops don't disappear, they get added to next month's drops.
@@Ronar222
Really? For me they disappeared...
@@cobrazax Try it again and if it still happens then maybe it was patched. Although I find that hard to believe because firaxis hasn't worked on this game in like forever.
I can’t believe that blowing the wall open in the rescue mission doesn’t reveal your troop. Are the aliens deaf or something?
It did reveal him, there just weren't any visible pods in range to take action.
@@roufas7595 you’re right. I just got confused because the game didn’t do the revealed animation.
obligatory algorithm comment
Please dont say Vanilla Xcom 2 is super easy, when I cant even beat the campaign on normal difficulty :(
yikes
It's been so long and I just can't do it I just can't and I even had a cousin that plays this :( let's just hope you make me think different
You got this, just gotta adjust your mindset! You can always come over and ask me direct questions about specific problems on twitch when I'm there
wasting supplies on raid mission? unacceptable
Ronar
First, supplies early on are useful. Second, u get more than just supplies from those raids...so save the containers
Ronar
Still u waste them for no reason, and its NOT just supplies but other resources
Ronar
I know that, its just u throw away useful resources for no reason at all
dafuq? you can blast the wall???
i cant do legend
i loke that he fast forwards through the boring parts. . but. .why does he still do commentary during the parts he fast forwards through? like when he's recording it, does he know he's just just gonna speed up that footage? because when it speeds up, the commentry speeds up too
I was talking as I played in real time, but when editing the video, I see that nothing happens in those parts so I just speed it up together.
@@Ronar222 okay, i get it. that's cool that that you still reply, given this video is old.
Hey guys, could someone help me out please? I'd like to know how to enable the little tactical information panel above the health bars. The one that shows the aim percentange, movement range, etc.
Thanks guys
That's a mod called additional icons
@@Ronar222 legend, thanks mate.
Great video and series by the way, love your work!
that creative use of game mechanics to cheese rescue missions xD. Then again rescue missions are bs so why not cheese them anyways.
Why did you fast forward through the combat early in the vid? Makes it disjointed and unwatchable?
Because its either me moving up the map with nothing else to say or just deleting lost which isn't very interactive or interesting.
