I purchased a Pounce Pad a while ago in various colors and an array of stencils. I was disappointed in my results and figured it was more trouble than it was worth. After watching your video I may just try it again. Thanks for your tenacity and research. I, too, hate fumes and actually am not supposed to be around them. Between your tips on glue basting (rather than spray basting) and your Pounce Pad spray formula, I can breathe easier and still take advantage of these quilting hacks. Thank you!❤
Yay! So glad the glue basting is helping you as well! I don't know how people use that spray baste all the time haha yuck! I hope you give the sticky spray a try! 💖 It's pretty fun to see the design come to life!
@@StitchObsessed I emptied my pounce container and filled it with “iron off” pounce powder. It sticks until you iron it off and no extra steps to get it to stick. I also added same to my rolling wheeled Clover chalk liners for marking straight lines, et. Just iron and it disappears. Give it a try.
Your videos are incredible! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! You can also make your own stencil for the pounce pad by drawing what you want to quilt on paper and then go over it with a pattern wheel. The pattern wheel makes the holes for the chalk. Thank you again!
Yayyyy🎉Good for you, Miriam! I love that you think outside the box and don't give up readily. This is genius! It would even be good for fixing straight quilting lines marked in chalk. Thank you so much for doing all the experiments and sharing your success with us😍😎
Yeah, it would work for straight-line quilting marks too! 💖 Thank you so much for watching! I like to take on the challenge of figuring things out haha!
Love the Video- I had a pounce pad and several stencils but got so discouraged because it fell off. THANK YOU for all your experimenting, you are a rock star 🎉
I’ve just started watching your videos and I am so glad I found you!! I just tried the glue basting from your video and couldn’t believe how incredibly well it worked!!! Definitely will make quilting easier. Now I might give the pounce pad a try as well. I’m also trying the glue for appliqué- I never would have thought of that. Thank you for the great ideas.
Ok! Yay, go you. Thanks so much for this, can’t wait to try it out. I have just mastered the free motion on my machine I’m not so good at making up designs so I was experimenting with the pounce pad and was having trouble with it sticking. I’m excited as you lol
Looking forward to trying your solution. I had the same issues you initially had using the pounce pad. I am going to try on a table runner I have. Thank you
Yes!!! Thank you for researching this. I made a Valentine Tablr runner and wanted a cute Heart Quilting on it. I broke out my pounder pad and figured out the chalk issue to come out and “Swipe “ it across. I’m lucky it was a small project because yes, was dealing with the chalk coming off. Thank You for digging on this. Now I can use my other templates more. 😉💗🥰
Thank you for your persistence in figuring out how to keep your pounce chalk on your quilt.. had tried using a pounce pad and what a mess!! Definitely going to try this..
WONDERFUL!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Thank you so much for sharing your new method with us 😍💯😍 I’m now recovering from my right eye cataract surgery which is going well but I can’t wait to try this idea sometime in the near future 👍🏼😊👏🏼💯😘 BTW to all the negative comments you got from your previous pounce pad video watchers too bad they will miss out on such a wonderful method to add to their quilting journey! So glad you stuck with the process despite all the haters! 😉👍🏼🥰💞
Thank you for sharing your "journey"! I usually use 505 basting spray for basting my quilts BUT the last time I used it my air purifier showed me exactly how toxic that stuff is! The air quality went in the red and the numbers we over 400! Sooooooooo needless to say I am checking the internet for home made, more natural alternatives. Interestingly enough they recommend using rubbing alcohol or vodka also. I am sensitive to many smells also.
Hi Miriam! I can’t wait to try this out! Question: when your stencil dries and you join your section up with a section you already quilted, how does that look on the quilt stitching? Is the joining spot obvious because you had to backstitch? Thanks! (Hope this makes sense!)
Hi, maybe experiment with white corn syrup to replace the sugar. I recall in the 1960s my Gram used fine ground cinnamon (on lights things) to pounce, and fine ground cuttlefish bone (which descales birds beaks) (on dark things). She combined white Karo syrup + vodka to mist spray/seal her pounce designs also to block all her (thread) fillet crochet with the same syrup/vodka concoction. Another thing she did was Never use cornstarch for anything-only "her recipe of cooked wheat starch/water solution", she said "every critter in the universe would eat everything with corn or rice starch", but not wheat starch. Although she Never machine quilted only hand quilted. In the 60s it was sacrilege to machine quilt per the quilting purists, haha. A real woman's (homemaker) needlework was only genuine and appreciated done by hand. Praise the LORD Women's Liberation hit the USA, during Woodstock! LOL
Yes!!! I love hearing stories like this! Sometimes the best solutions are made from household items and NOT store bought! I'm going to have to do some experimenting with different kitchen items! And yes, I agree about the greatness of women's liberation! haha!! I LOVE to hand stitch, but it's not very pretty! 😂😂
Miriam to the rescue again! 😁 I couple months back I got myself the pounce pad and some awesome stencils and I couldn't get it to work for me... I'll be trying it out this weekend. And P.S. glue basting is SUCH a game changer 🤯❤
I broke down and ordered a pounce pad & stencil, going to give this try. 🤞🏻I do have a question, do you just wash the chalk and spray out after quilting?
Awesome, Crystal! So sorry it took so long to reply! So, I would read the instructions for the specific chalk you purchased on how to remove it. And then, yes, you need to wash the quilt to get the sticky spray off.
I've always wanted to try the pounce pad!. I don't mind hair spray, probably because I grew up using tons of it, lol.. Question then funny story. Did the hair spray work well enough too do more than 1 section at a time? Funny story ; Hair spray is notorious for attracting bees, lol. When I heard you say the DIY hair spray had sugar all I envisioned was a swarm of bees around my head 🤣🤣🤣🤣... Maybe need to be a 70-80's girl to find that funny, lol who knows.. 🤣🤣🤣... I'm still laughing about that... Seriously though, I am very anxious for you to find the solution to perfecting this idea because Big sexy hairspray is expensive! lol... Thank you, I enjoy your channel so much and how hoping to see a "quilting studio" update soon. 😁
OH no!!! Not the bees!!! haha yeah, I'm a bit nervous about the sugary spray attracting little fruit flies, so I need to get this quilt finished and washed ASAP! haha! So to answer your question, yes, I do believe you could do more sections with the hairspray. It definitely had a stronger hold than my DIY spray. Thank you for watching!!!💖 I'm hoping to have a studio video up by the end of the month!
Hi Miriam. Love this idea. As I mentioned to you b4 I found this a very messy project on a queen size quilt. Wondering in your opinion how much extra time do you think it would add to a queen size quilt. Meaning waiting for it to dry? Keep up the good work. Love your videos. ❤
Hmmm that's a good question, Mary! I'm really not sure how much more time it would take, though I would probably place the design and spray the sticky spray in sections, like I mentioned in the video. Maybe 2 foot by 2 foot sections? Then while the spray is drying you could work on something else while it dries? It dries fairly quickly (about 20 minutes). Thank you so much for watching! I hope that answers your question! 💖💖
Yes, I will wash it. The blue chalk washes out with cold water. There is also chalk that comes off by using a steam iron, so you definitely need to read the instructions for your specific chalk.
First time watching one of your videos. But I have a question. Does adding sugar maybe make bugs attracted to it. I assume you wash the quilt after it’s finished. I am going to your channel to check out a few more videos of yours.
I will wash it with cold water and detergent in my washing machine! I do this with all of my quilts because I use Elmer's School Glue to baste my quilts. Thank you for watching!💖

Oh girl, I was experimenting directly on the quilt! haha! Probably would have been a bit smarter to practice on scrap fabric, but I was just too excited to try each option on the quilt. 🥴
Hmm I will have to give this a try. I would have thought that the alcohol may make the color bleed, but this would be a game changer for me and FMQ.
