based on a typical balinese 5 tone scale. C-E-F-G-B-C
the original purpose of beleganjur was to accompany armies into battle and strike fear into the hearts of the enemy. In fact, gamelan beleganjur literally means gamelan of walking warriors. Also like its Western counterpart, today beleganjur has mostly lost its association with warfare, and instead is associated with festivals, contests, and cremation ceremonies.
Gamelan beleganjur is essential to the Hindu religious ceremonies of Bali. There are rites to appease evil spirits and honor good ones, temple festivals to celebrate the anniversary of a temple's dedication, and cremation ceremonies to cleanse the souls of the deceased and prepare them for reincarnation.

There is something about this music that gives me goosebumps and I can't figure out why. It's definitely one of the best performances I've ever heard.

artilovesart61 You are absolutely right. This Gamelan concert was something very special. I think one of the reasons for this magical music was, that there was only a small
audience and perhaps 7 or 8 of the listeners were Gamelan experts. There were old and very experienced musicians, gamelan composers who are respected artists and teachers. This concert was a kind of demonstration of different Gamelan styles and special aspects of Barong dance. After the concert these experts gave the musicians some advices how to improve certain musical aspects. They were judged and even critizised how to play the music in a correct context. So the Gamelan Ensemble were aware that they were judged and that their music would be discussed after playing. The musicians made notes in a book what the experts told them to to better next time. Therefore they were very concentrated but still had fun during playing and they seemed relaxed as well, I think this is the Asian way, similar to artists of Indian Classical Music. By the way I was astonished about the precise and fast players and I liked the flute Artists which added to a softer touch during this Gamelan performance.

These are truly beautiful. I'm an Indonesian myself, but in 20 years of my life, only now I realize how magical and astonishing gamelan music is. Isn't that ridiculous? Now here I am, searching for gamelan music across youtube at 4 am lmao. I wonder if there's somekind of institution around me to learn gamelan.

Nothing like wandering around Bali, and then having to step aside or wait for a funeral procession to pass by. Never minded it one bit.

I fell in love with gamelan music when visiting Bali 15 years ago and Degung Sabilulungan by Suara Parahiangan was playing everywhere.
I also attended a cremation ceremony, so this music brings me right back to the beauty and wonder of Bali. This video is especially wonderful to be able to see the musicians and instruments.
    Thank you.

Mr. Egert, What an amazing video! I am currently in university taking a Southeast Asian music course. We have done several sections on the Javanese and Balinese gamelan. With your permission I will be using parts or your video here in my mid-term exam! Thank you so much for the time and effort I know was involved in putting this very professional video together! I have been to Indonesia once but I am very sorry to say that my compatriots were not interested in this specific branch of their culture. :( But we did see Borabadur! :) Thanks again for sharing this! Outstanding! :)

+dundee1705 Hi dundee, feel free to use the material of this video with the Balinese music for your music course and studies. I am glad to watch that so many people love the performance.
It really was a gift to be able to listen to the musicians of Gamelan players. There were several musicologists and composers among the listeners. I was fascinated how the artists played in such a perfect way, in unity. I was astonished that some Balinese experts artists and composers made suggestions how they could even improve some of the music or play it in a different manner. Being a musician myself I did not understand what these experts had to say, and I am glad, to me this was MAGIC. The second performance of the rehearsal of Cremation Ceremony I found it by "so called" chance, just followed the sound of music and was lucky to be able to listen the inticrate drumming rhythms and metal instruments and was amazed by the patient teacher and the energy and devotion of the group. I wish you good success and joy for your studies. Regards from Jens

thanks, this is lovely. and really inspiring and informative. seeing the rehearsal process is a great way to get a feel for the structural underpinnings of this very mercurial music.

Thank you for your feedback. This is the first time, that it happend so quickly avter upload. There is always a first time! I was amazed to find your comment before I have even watche the video.
When I heard the sounds in Ubud, I had the feeling: this sounds like war. a kind of fighting of different elements. Perhaps a description of a dissolving body or soul, something inexplainable, a mysteria. What do you mean with mercurial music? Quick and changeable in temperament; volatile unpredictable change; erratic behavior, changeable moods or do you relate to the metal aspect of Mercury? Perhaps we do not really understand what is going on with this music for cremation. The only thing what I noticed is, that the Balinese people accept the transition to another world as a natural process and they are not sad. Maybe I should ask the Balinese natives to tell me more about the essence of these sounds....
