Again, huge thanks to Forest64 for the crazy discoveries and research, Weatherton for the TASes, discoveries, research and help with the script, and micro500 for all the amazing 3D visuals!
I'm proud to have been a part of this. This was a fun collaboration, thanks for including me!

Epic guys
I really enjoyed working on this with you guys. Let's do it again sometime ;)
Thanks for using the MK64HD track icons! It’s great to see them put to such a great use ☺️

insane visuals as always. Thanks for the LARGE amount of work and very informative content!

thank you for being you kosmic :)
Great to see a legend commenting on a legend! Keep up the great work guys!
Toad saying "I'm the best" not knowing that he literally is the best
The audacity to assume he doesn't know that
Oh, he knows
AHHHHHHH
He definitely knows
are you the real clothing hanger
In Mario Kart 64 walls are merely a suggestion. Just like I suggest you subscribe to Bismuth right now because the work he puts into these videos is insane.
All one has to do, is simply pull a Wirtual and call it a day.
Instructions unclear drove over phone.
Instructions unclear, drove over Bismuth.
I like how the speedrunning community is respecting each others work!
I just watched 12 minutes of this, have never been more confused in my life, but I appreciate the effort and expertise needed for all of this. Then, I read your comment, nodded in agreement and immediately subscribed.

Reasonable to assume so. They're bipedal and basically human shaped
Amazing that these are your piano arrangements. They sound great
I wouldn't say these are compositions, honestly
@@Bismuth9 Why is that? I think they sound great!
i think the more correct term would be arrangements
Piano means Level in italian. Like with Video game Levels. So the Level Boss in italian would be the Piano Chef.
Every time I want to go and listen to them outside the video but can never find them. So calming, relaxing and gentle. I love them. ^^
Walls have a zone that push you back if you get into it
Ah shit, here we go again...
atleast this definition of a wall and a floor is much more reasonable than SM64...
@@kerbonaut2059 at least there is a cap of speed lol instead of spamming blj tk get like 500 thousand speed
TJ “Henry” Yoshi
@@suvannaberkahjaya5984 there is a speed cap in sm64; the issue is that it's a *positive* speed cap. BLJs actually subtract from your speed overall, which leads to a negative speed value. There's no cap - or, rather, floor - there. I imagine this same issue lies in mk64, just lacking a way to build up negative speed, or potentially no *quick* way to do so

“But while there are many ways to drive through walls, it’s impossible to go through the gro- what just happened here”
Great humour as always
Ah yes, Mario Kart 64 decided to take a page from DK64 and decide walls aren't real.
Mario kart 64 will be used in video game theory and analysis is it game that really makes you question what exactly is a wall, and just because they say it’s a wall, is it actually a wall?
@@blakem2902 At least no horizontal walls this time. It's too meta for me trying to question what exactly should be the ground or no.
I mean DK's there in the roster. Presumably every game with the great ape in it has walls just phone it in.
It took a quarter of a century, but we can finally go through the castle door in Royal Raceway.
We knew this would happen someday.
Give it time... someone will find a way to do code injection in Mario Kart 64 to cause the castle hub from Super Mario 64 to appear when you clip through the door in Royal Raceway...
Tell me about
@@sintanan469 That'd be so sick! Heck, at that point you might as well just put the entirety of SM64 inside there, make it a game-within-a-game kind of deal! And maybe the lap timer keeps going til you beat SM64 :)
The fact that new glitches are still being found for a 24 year old game is mindblowing. I love the speedrunning community as a whole, but Nintendo 64 runners are another breed
And the funny things that these glitches shown on the video contribute very little anyway. Either because there are better shortcuts or because of how so few levels have the properties needed.
The third dimension is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.
Is it possible to learn this power?
@@Alexs23743 Yes, just take Physics II.
@@Alexs23743 have you read Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions, written by Edwin Abbott (under the psuedonym 'A Square')? For whatever reason, your comment reminded me of it. It's a short novella (like 120 pages, I think?) about a square who lives in Flatland (a 2d universe). He meets a sphere and most of the rest of the book is them trying to understand each other's world, along with the inherent difficulty in doing so (much as you would struggle to understand a 4D beings reality). He also has a dream in which he meets an inhabitant of 1-dimensional space, and one from _zero-dimensional_ space, which is pretty brilliant. It's a truly fascinating book, and perhaps the most original story I've ever read in my entire [very book filled] life. Apparently it's supposed to be a satirical metaphor regarding the overly hierarchical society of the Victorians, but it's more interesting for it's examination on how dimension and form affect each other. If you find geometry/math/philosophy interesting in the slightest, you'll definitely enjoy it.
Anyway, I figured you might enjoy it since your profile icon includes your last name and the word 'publications', leading me to believe that you MIGHT be a writer. And if you're a writer and as nerdy as I think you might be, you might enjoy reading! A stretch, I know! It's just that that book has brought me so much joy, and I enjoy bringing others joy, so this is that. There's _probably_ a clearer way to phrase that but I need sleep so I'm not gonna worry about it. Can you tell that I'm NOT a writer? ;)
(no offense intended with the nerd remark, I promise! Hell, I read textbooks for fun, I don't think I'm allowed to use that word in a derogatory manner)
That clip of the guy quitting out made me physically cringe. Imagine how many times you’d think about it at night. Ouch.
ikr. it sucked. D:
@Boco Corwin Yep. Somebody hit it RTA and reset. Ouch.
At least he had it recorded so the world knows that he actually successfully did the trick even if he did not get the record
@@VGPorage Sooo...the entire community will remember that you committed the speedrunning equivalent of 28-3 for all eternity. GG?
@@CharlesUrban Up until he does it again and doesn't reset. Saved it!
There’s no feeling like shattering Nintendo’s idea of what their game was going to be
And they despise it from the bottom of their heart :D
I guess we should just be glad they can't update this game, otherwise anything fun and game breaking would be removed.
@@muffinfighter3680 and without giving them a chance to ever patch it out like modern games. >:D
Come home to Simple Skips
And fortunately Nintendo can't update their old games!
I love when you go "that's imposs- what just happened? " reminds me of the loz 1 video with "this is... that was gohma." Always makes me laugh
The visual aids are so well done
This gives me hope that when we find the edge of existence, someone will find a way to clip through it
By jumping backwards, no less
the laws of physics are more robust than any video game physics engine, but if we could travel faster than light or fuck around with shit at the subatomic level without having to build a particle accelerator the size of several countries then yes, we could yahoo our way out of the material universe
@@dotwarner17 I’m not just talking about the material universe. That will be easy to clip though with some lag frames. I’m talking about the edge of existence, homie.
I am pleased that both of my infamous MK64 fluke shortcuts from 1997 have finally been recreated recently (Kalimari Desert fence skip + Wario Stadium full lap skip), especially now that I’m no longer physically able to play competitively. Kudos to those continuing the legacy in making these findings into reality. The proverbial torch is passed on.

LARGE skips indeed. Awesome video
LARGE
"Allow me to introduce my friend, the third dimension" I love this 😂 And fantastic video! Super interesting to learn about how wall collisions work in this game
“removing walls doesn’t break it that much” really says a lot about this game lol
“well it’s actually a bit more complicated” is the theme of this video.
* channel
Imagine a game being so thoroughly broken that being able to clip through walls loses time.
Lol I've never thought of it like that but you're absolutely right! xD
Why would you assume that clipping through a wall should innately lower your time? The most likely result of clipping through a wall in a game would be that your beyond the wall stuck outside of the level.
@@sulcuryaltinone4570 because circuit type racing tracks are closed loops and walls on games used to work from one side only.
Breaking through walls in racing games always meant you could go anywhere and join back whenever you wanted as long as you had floor to drive on
Thanks for using my team’s track icons- happy to help out!

Is a game's true potential ever found? Just when we think we know everything, something insane is found that completely changes our perception of the game. It's incredible!

The true villain of speedrunning strikes once more in Mk64: Retry Muscle Memory.
I HATE IT
Your videos are like "Homework: the Game!" for grad student software engineers... but you break it all down so well! Awesome video as always.
*Therapist:* MK64 at 60FPS isn't real, it can't hurt you.
*MK64 at 60FPS:* 7:50

Hurt you? HURT you?! I don't play MK64, but if I did I'd never play it without a 60fps hack again now that I know it exists. It's as indispensable as SkyUI for Skyrim.
@@Adamantium9001 let me go ahead and ruin your day some more. You can mod your 64 to output RGB and run it through an upscaler to get 720p. It's pretty slick compared to the original RF into a modern TV.
@@drewsmith3673 I'm currently replaying Pikmin 2 on emulator. On original hardware it was 4:3 480p 30fps; I'm experiencing it now in 16:9 1080p 60fps and it's ~beautiful.~
@@Adamantium9001 Nice! Would imagine the sound quality is better too? Also, you'd never have to worry about soundtracks dropping your fps lol Emulator is the much more sensible option now that I think about.
I’m getting pannenkoek flashbacks... in fact, it’s cool that the wall hitboxes are almost identical to those in mario 64, specifically movable boxes. Engine reuse!
It's also how most game collision systems work.

This game is a quarter of a century old. Things like this are still found. Absolutely unreal
"Allow me to introduce my friend, the 3rd dimension" has huge "but to answer that we need to talk about parallel universes" energy and I love it.

I love the illustration for "strange behavior".
Well done. I loved the visual support for the explanations. It's also really cool how you went into more details in how the different wall mechanics and glitches work in MK64.

Real talk tho, everything about this video is so well put together. The voiceover, the music, the graphics/visual aids, even the choice of video samples.
Whoa! Love how detailed the video was!

I'm always amazed at how well researched and well put together your videos are. There is so much information packed into these videos, that I often have to watch one a few times to catch everything. I really enjoy explorations of game physics like this. It makes me just amazed that things work as well as they do most of the time seeing how easy it can be to circumvent them.
Desertenko sent me here, it's really interesting to see such breakthroughs even after 25 years of the game's release
@2:59 🤣🤣🤣 I laughed so hard when I guessed what was happening just before you say it.
Awesome work bismuth! I love videos like this :)
As someone who works with code, these kinds of bugs always pain mean slightly. So many of them are so trivial to fix (swapping the order of checks) yet no one considered these edge cases.
Still really cool to see them being discovered!
compliments to the chefs for the amazing editing
Your voice is extremely calming. That no A button 5 hour epic is my counting sheep
I love how the last trick was literally just slamming into the wall multiple times to beat a course in under 3 seconds! Seems to typify this series in general; when brains don't work, RAM IT BACK!
New Bismuth video! Booommm!!! Bismuth, I just want to thank you for your hard work. I remember you saying it was hard for you to speak English sometimes and it requires multiple takes to get it right. Just wanted to let you know that you sound great! Your English is frame perfect!
One fifteen minute video to remind me the hell of Geometry class. Thanks for that.
In all honesty, great and informative video. Thanks for the great content as usual.
so it turned into super mario kart now with driving into a wall to get a lap. Good Job on finding this stuff and make it understandable.
Watching this video with so many information and you voice is helping me to sleep for my insomnia problem
The amount of effort you put into this video is incredible. Easy sub.
Extremely well explained, and great pacing.
SUPER INTERESTING and incredibly well presented. I can’t imagine how long this took to put together. As a side note, I once fell through the floor of block fort when I was slammed into a wall by another player. I assume this used similar mechanic.
Those 3d visuals were absolutely beautiful!
Thanks!
The amount of effort in this video has not gone unnoticed. Great work, keep it up!
It's amazing that new discoveries keep on coming in. Well done guys. 👏👏
Incredible how much work was put into the video.
Makes me think of how one time growing up I was playing MK64 with my family. We were on Toad's Turnpike, and my uncle crashed into something (could have been hit by one of the trucks, could have got shelled, don't quite remember), and he got launched through the wall. Lakitu put him half a lap ahead and we spent a while trying to replicate it and couldn't.
