The solution to the issue of rulings (as with most new potentially-contentious glitch discoveries) should just be "Make a new speedrun category."

That's sort-of true. The question in basically which category people want to pay attention to. And for that question, it seems to be important whether you add new restrictions to the old category and make a new category without these restrictions. Or whether you make a new category with the restrictions, and leave the old one unrestricted. Objectively both approaches are equivalent. But humans seem to care about the difference.
@@Sylocat It makes a lot of sense insofar as human nature and casual observers are concerned. Most people heavily interested in speedrunning a specific game will likely know many (if not all) of the different categories and their idiosyncrasies, and probably switch from time to time to keep things interesting; OoT is a great example. Unfair as it may seem, the average person isn't going to care and just wants to see the game get completed as fast as possible in a way that they see as "playing the game" i.e. something equivalent to any% no major glitches. This is why you still see some comments on e.g. zfg1's runs that utilize ACE or SRM saying things like "cheater" or "hacked game". A lot of people just aren't that knowledgeable, nor should they really be expected to be; they just want to see a game - likely one from their childhood - get completed extremely fast whilst conforming to some arbitrary ruleset they themselves have decided. In other words, there currently is - and almost certainly always will be - a large gulf between runners and the majority of people who consume said runs. It's less a matter of someone "deciding" which is the "main" category; that's just how it naturally tends to arise for obvious reasons. Same goes for how the average person only knows the top runners and would struggle to name a single glitch hunter for most games even though the WR runs wouldn't be possible without them. It's not fair, but it makes sense nonetheless. The average Joe couldn't care less who XxSupahK00pahSt0mpah93xX is, regardless of how integral their contributions are to the game's WR via their 200+ 20-second clips from their small UA-cam channel. Thankfully glitch hunters tend to be a modest and humble bunch :) Also, sometimes things really are just very contentious to the point that slapping a new category doesn't suffice - simply "sweeping it under a new rug" if you will. This adds MK64 to the list of games where pausing is game breaking or controversial. In Minecraft, pausing can be used to lower your in game timer, which led to Brentilda's IGT being over 90 seconds faster than his RTA. In Red Balls 2 and 3, a glitch where you jump and then pause the game a couple frames after said jump can cause you to effectively triple your jump height, creating massive skips throughout both speedruns.

incredible and groundbreaking video, im not one to underestimate potential of future discoveries in speedrunning but this video still took me completely by surprise! so much is still left to be found it seems, this should give us enough to play around with for the next while :) just an amazing video! please keep it up :D
If I had a nickel for every time pausing in a Nintendo game broke the mechanics, I’d have 2 nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s strange it happened twice.
Starts as "Hey, I got a 0:00'00 time". Goes to "Hey, pausing breaks the game" Then to "0:00'01, but there is still room for improvement" Ends with "Now we're destroying ALL the trees!" Ah, yes, I completely followed that train of thought... ...until it hit me at the crossing xD
I’ve never loved repeated pausing strats, whether for pause buffering, lining up precision, or something like this. I just think it’s mostly against the spirit of how games should be played. On the other hand for TAS oh hell yeah go to town
Fun fact from Super Metroid: repeated frame-perfect pausing will keep you alive at 0hp, and In Game Time will not count up while you do so. By taking advantage of this it would be possible to create a No Major Glitches TAS with an incredibly low value for In Game Time. The only caveat is that you can't pause on elevators, during Power Bomb explosions, or during Mother Brain's rainbow beam.
I think that if pausing to enable glitches is allowed, (I'm of the mind that this is against the spirit of it) RTA times should be used for runs that use pausing to remove the advantage of the clock being paused.
i think that if you're not in the community your thoughts on it probably don't have much value? ...which is also why i'm not gonna share my thoughts (also i have none)
Finally... I can sleep well at night knowing that all trees in SM64 can be destroyed. Lol, but seriously, I enjoyed the vid. Keep up the great stuff :D
Would the indefinite OOB driving eventually lead to a crash due to your position becoming too high? Or does this game handle large floats differently than SM64?
The 60 fps is not a true 60 because it actually runs at 50% speed and the video is sped up. But I do recall someone optimizing MK64 to the point where it might almost be possible.
While unlikely, I'm hoping this means Matthias will come back from retirement and will finally be able to get all 32 records at once. Wait nevermind, I thought this was some insane time save.
I think if the community wanted to something like add a 0.00 category where runners have a timer aside from the game's lap timer they could make it work

OMG for over 20 years I've wondered why you cant save replays if you pause or hit the walls too much. This must be it. I never thought I'd know ever know why.
Bismuth's entire video is pretty much: "Hey, that was pretty fast. But you know what would be better? If it went even faster."
Your piano arrangement at the end is simply gorgeous. But, well done all around!
"Don't blink!"

incredible and groundbreaking video, im not one to underestimate potential of future discoveries in speedrunning but this video still took me completely by surprise! so much is still left to be found it seems, this should give us enough to play around with for the next while :)
just an amazing video! please keep it up :D
If I had a nickel for every time pausing in a Nintendo game broke the mechanics, I’d have 2 nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s strange it happened twice.
5:45 yes of course what magical magical technology we can now save three (3) frames. Speedruns be wildin
Bismuth always brings some banger content with some banger music. That Rainbow Road remix is amazing.
Very appreciate of how much effort you put into visualizing tricks and glitches in your videos. Such an amazing channel!
i been loving your videos for a while bismuth, your editing technique and explanations are always so good,
Damn, now I wanna watch all trees!
Starts as "Hey, I got a 0:00'00 time".
Goes to "Hey, pausing breaks the game"
Then to "0:00'01, but there is still room for improvement"
Ends with "Now we're destroying ALL the trees!"
Ah, yes, I completely followed that train of thought...
...until it hit me at the crossing xD
Amazingly well produced video. Keep on going strong!
Beautiful video man. Lovely music. You do so well with these videos
Can't wait for the new records in All Trees category
I’ve never loved repeated pausing strats, whether for pause buffering, lining up precision, or something like this. I just think it’s mostly against the spirit of how games should be played. On the other hand for TAS oh hell yeah go to town
Fun fact from Super Metroid: repeated frame-perfect pausing will keep you alive at 0hp, and In Game Time will not count up while you do so. By taking advantage of this it would be possible to create a No Major Glitches TAS with an incredibly low value for In Game Time. The only caveat is that you can't pause on elevators, during Power Bomb explosions, or during Mother Brain's rainbow beam.
new bismuth upload means a happy friday
I've always amazed how you and the community figure this stuff out.
I think that if pausing to enable glitches is allowed, (I'm of the mind that this is against the spirit of it) RTA times should be used for runs that use pausing to remove the advantage of the clock being paused.
Agreed. I would also have separate categories for pause-less vs. pause-using runs.
i think that if you're not in the community your thoughts on it probably don't have much value?
...which is also why i'm not gonna share my thoughts (also i have none)

Got a good laugh out of the fact that destroying trees is a spreedrun category. The MK64 community has peaked.
Magnificent work and great presentation! Love it!
Your so good at explaining this stuff Bismuth!
You and summing salt have this category on lock, no one does it better than guys. Glad I subbed to your channel
9:37 Toad said he's the best without even knowing he actually is literally the best
That ending was the ultimate bait and switch.
Finally... I can sleep well at night knowing that all trees in SM64 can be destroyed.
Lol, but seriously, I enjoyed the vid. Keep up the great stuff :D
Great video and great music as always.
Would the indefinite OOB driving eventually lead to a crash due to your position becoming too high? Or does this game handle large floats differently than SM64?
Most likely. Though you'd probably need to drive for days if not weeks to get your position anywhere near that high.
@@Sylocat Could be done with a TAS and running at higher speeds to experiment.
The tracks don't extend that far. You'd just fall off the edge into water pretty quickly
Not enough drivable level geometry. You'd drive OoB, and then *fall* OoB and get fished up by lakitu.
even if the track extended forever you'd likely get stuck before that as your velocity to round up to the next point would keep getting higher
Great video mate! Always a good watch and informative. Keep them coming :)
I refuse to believe 1999 was 23 years ago
People born in 2004 are adults this year :)
I'm glad MK64 runners are just as happy to destroy greenery as Hollow Knight runners
Finally, all the trees can be destroyed and deforestation can happen
Really loved the Piano in this one, Bismuth!
Does that mean you could potentially "hack" a 60 FPS visual version of Mario Kart 64?
Nice video as always Bismuth
The 60 fps is not a true 60 because it actually runs at 50% speed and the video is sped up. But I do recall someone optimizing MK64 to the point where it might almost be possible.
@@Bismuth9 If you run PAL instead maybe 50FPS could work?
i couldnt imagine this busted game could be broken even more. GREAT VIDEO LOVE YOUR STUFF DADDY BISMUTH
Nice! All trees is finally really all trees.
I don't know about the speedrun community but I love this channel
And this is EXACTLY why you NEVER use in game timers for timing. Ever
I feel like there's PC games or other console games that could counter that.
@@bsharpmajorscale if pc it should always be time without loads. No matter what

no.

man mario kart 64's glitches are endlessly fascinating. one of the most broken games nintendo has ever made.
Hahahahahaha those last few seconds changed the video from great to amazing! (Without spoiling it:-)
Man I love you videos, they're just amazing
While unlikely, I'm hoping this means Matthias will come back from retirement and will finally be able to get all 32 records at once.
Wait nevermind, I thought this was some insane time save.
I always wanted to be a lumberjack, but I was only skilled at kart-racing.
Thank you for making my dream a reality.
The custom music really enhances these videos, at least in my opinion!
*Your videos are ABSOLUTELY AMAZING*
Thank you ssoooooo much for all of your content!!!
I think if the community wanted to something like add a 0.00 category where runners have a timer aside from the game's lap timer they could make it work
this mystery is older than me lol
