Congratulations on your success! Can you do a video on the business side of things? Like when did you decide it's time to create an LLC, get a business bank account & credit card, hire an accountant and lawyer etc?
Such a HUGE year you have had with growing a business, getting married, travel and leaving your full time job. So impressed and excited to see this video!
You blew my mind on your ad spend! 🤯 congratulations on your success!! So your 40+K profit is pre tax, correct? Mind sharing what your profit is post taxes?
You are my inspiration Tayor! I am doing exactly the same as you, but I just started. I am also planning to have hundreds of listings, because i read out of hundreds of listings, there would probably be about 10 listings that would carry the store. I'm hoping for a profitable year. :)
This was the most inspiring video I've seen yet. Thank you! A video that is just upfront and to the point, was very engaging. Best of luck to you in 2024!! I just opened my shop in March 2024. I have close to 300 listings and super positive about the future! 😊
This is a really inspiring and insightful video! Thank you so much for sharing. I'm a new Etsy seller, I started a little over 2 months ago. I started to see a few sales and still having huge doubts. But, I know that I just need to get through this stage and have faith. As you said, I'm also inspired from this kind of stories and videos a lot, when I feel like everything is not working :)
Hi Taylor, this was extremely inspiring, thank you! Do you think you could make a video on time management? It's incredible what you were able to accomplish for 2023, with having a child, a fulltime job and a wedding. Could you share tips on how you brainstorm your product ideas and list so efficiently?
If you start with 300 listing you can’t see what’s working , what’s getting views, keywords, design. It’s best to start with 100-150 and master that then expend. In my opinion do what works for your store bc what works for one person might not work for another. My first 3 months were a learning curve and I am still learning.
Thank you so much for sharing It really gives me idea of what can be achieved in a year. Right now I'm around 5 almost 6 months in and your numbers are very inspiring.
Congrats on being able to leave your corporate job! Your videos have been very inspiring. Thanks for sharing the number of listings that you have! I've had others suggest finding a specific niche and have only a few listings but I think your process feels more comfortable to me. Couple of questions: You did a video with listing variations within one listing; do those type of listings have more sells in your shop? Are all or most of the items you sell personalized? Thanks!
Thank you so much! I do not personally offer a ton of listings that have multiple variations within them because it's extremely time consuming to create listings like that. I find it more impactful with the bits of time I was working in to just create a listing for each of the variations and auto-publish them from Printify. Majority of my items are not personalized.
Hi Taylor, you mentioned that you thought you would have a slow month in January. I used to resell on Ebay but because of shipping cost getting higher and higher and having to find and store inventory it was just too much so I decided to learn more about print on demand. When I was reselling, my January sales were sometimes as much as my late November / early December sales because many people (especially teenagers) would get cash or gift cards and what do they do?... also think about the gifts people receive that need accessories such as laptops (sleeves ), Phones ( cases) make up ( make up bags ) computers ( mouse pads ) puppies etc....
Are your POD Items customized or already preset? My biggest hurdle is having tons of personalized items and November was terrible because I had to spend hours personalizing items (names😅) not sure how you/what you do or what you recommend
Hello, Taylor! Thank you for this video! I'm new on Etsy and have a question: do you manage social media like Pinterst or FB for your store or Etsy ads is enough for you?
I’m sorry if this is a dumb question but what does the rest of the money go to each month? In December you had 30k in sales but 10k in profit. Were you setting aside money to pay for ads for the up coming months? I’m new to all of this so just wondering! I really am excited about starting POD soon. My full time job is killing my soul and i have to find something else in life to do. Being your own boss is the way to go! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience!
Forgot to ask. With 900 listings, how do you keep up with which ones to renew or especially, let expire? Do you keep renewing your seasonal (Christmas, halloween, etc.) all year? Thank again!
I keep all of my listings on manual renewal - so if they're expiring it's because they haven't sold in 4 months. If they expire but were seasonal and had a lot of success during that season, I will go and renew those listings about 8 weeks out from the seasonal event.
did you start with cash in a savings to cover sales or did you use a credit card? if cash how much did you set aside to start? what is your goal on profit per item?
Yes, I just used my checking account in the beginning. I kind of just leaped into print on demand so I didn't really plan it out and save anything in advance. I just used my own cash I had. However, in February is where I knew I should be more proper with my business expenses and I opened up a business credit card, checking account, and savings account to keep my finances organized for my business. I recommend keeping all finances for your business separate from the beginning - because as the business grows it becomes a lot more complicated later to try and sort out. My average profit per item is around $8-12 which I am happy with!
How long did you have an Etsy store before you counted your first calendar year in January? You mentioned Q4 the year before, so how long were you at it before counting the calendar year ?
January definitely was significantly less than December but I still was nearly 300% YoY from last January and ended the month with over $12k in revenue!
Yep I feel you 😂 I'm 27, a wife, and a mom of FOUR KIDS 5 AND UNDER. Talk about time consuming 😂 but that's what drew me to POD - i want to stay home with my babies ❤
@@TaylorPOD thanks! I started Etsy in May. I'm at 437 sales so i guess I'm seeing a bit of traction but girrrrl it's so slow! 😂 Q4 did not work out for me
This is really inspiring Taylor, thank you so much for sharing your revenue and profit numbers! Curious how much you focus on personalization? I have started to do more custom listings and they seem to be doing well. I'm wondering how I can manage large volumes of custom orders over the long-term.
I don't really do a lot of personalization. I have recently been experimenting with a software called HelloCustom - which is truly the solution for large volumes of custom orders. It automates the personalization for you. I definitely recommend checking it out!
@@sethasophanna7841 it really varied, some days I was working on my shop by just doing research and then other times I was spending the time just listing. Most in one day I would say was probably around 20-30. But the only reason that was possible was because I already had my SEO done and my designs and mockups done. So days like that I was just inputting everything I had already worked hard on - if that makes sense! :)
@@TaylorPOD incredible story! It looks so easy when people talk about pod on etsy, but it's actually super hard. I mean of course, if this would be easy everyone would do it! Thanks for sharing your realistic point of view! Very thankful for that.
Very inspiring!! How many reviews did you shop have in January when you started? Im trying to get an idea of how many reviews before people start feeling more comfortable buying from my shop...
I am not sure exactly how many review I had then but generally I have been able to maintain about a 30% review rate. I do reach out to customers after items have been delivered to request a review and see that they're happy with their purchase. I think a more important factor in having customers 'gain trust' in your shop is how your shop is presented to them (through your listing images, shop branding). It's important to have high quality listing images and really optimize for a professional high quality look. Imagery converts customers most.
How did you get so may listings up so quickly? I find it takes me so long to do so I don’t know how to be more efficient with the small amount of time I have working full time.
I was spending about 15-20 hours a week some months. 100 listings a month spread out across 60 hours is only a little over 1 listing an hour. I don’t think I was listing at a crazy rate.
Hey Taylor, I posted a comment yesterday asking if you would be willing to do a video on filing for Etsy taxes. I was thinking a bit about it and what I was asking is if you could make a video showing how you come up with your profit vs revenue numbers etc. And maybe what documents you are gathering for your taxes. I know every state is different and I’m not asking for specific legal advice, just what things you are gathering to send to your CPA. I hope I made sense! 😅 FYI, there isn’t a video on UA-cam explaining this at all! I haven’t been able to find one.
This is so helpful! I can definitely include that in a video I am working on in the near future that does discuss this type of information! :) Thank you so much for commenting!
I would love to see how many sales you had each week or month in those months to kind of get an idea of what that looks like to new sellers. Like if you're making $9,400 in a month revenue how many sales is that one per day or three per day....... As a new seller I think I would find that really motivating ❤❤
I plan to make a video about this soon as I just finished up taxes with my accountant. Although it will just be me sharing my personal experience because taxes are really different from person to person and depending on if they own a home, have children, etc.
My job starts at 7:50 so 4 in the morning is very typical of the people I work with...... I usually wake up at 6:30 LOL but I'm thinking about rolling that clock back so that I can do more on my business before work
Wow ❤🎉 congratulations Taylor, I am so happy for you! I told my husband that whatever happens with my shop this year I am quitting my full time job focusing on our kids and my business ❤😊You are so inspirational 😊 I am so excited about what this year has in store for me with my e-commerce shop ❤ I have been posting between 80-100 listings per month and I am so excited to see what Q4 will be for me 😂 Question for you, so you mentioned that you had to travel and was only mainly engaging with your shop doing customer service, does that mean you were also mainly processing orders? I will be traveling out of the country possibly in May or June for three weeks and I am afraid to place my shop in Vacation mode and lose whatever traction I have gain up to then. Also, I vern running ads as well and have seen a lot of traffic, haven’t really made any sales lol 😂 but I am still working on my shop and not giving up 😂❤
Thank you so much! It makes me happy to hear this was inspiring and thank you for your kind words. To answer your question, yes while I travel reviewing my orders was part of that time as well to answering customer messages. I had another comment asking to create a video about how I handle my shop when traveling so stay tuned I will be creating that the first week of March. I do not recommend putting your shop in vacation mode. I am rooting for you!
Oooo such a good recommendation! I love it. I just added that to my calendar as I have a small trip the end of the month and will be sharing exactly what I do in those instances. Stay tuned!
I advertise all of my listings. If your ad's are not spending that means you have a click-through problem. Watch this video for help with that: ua-cam.com/video/uFLfvILte10/v-deo.html
Hope this makes sense: Keywords are the general term to referring to any words you use within your title and tags. So tags are a form of keywords you're using. I hope that helps!
When you say ad spend do you mean the money you made from ads or you mean the money you spent for ads on Etsy?? I was following along then towards the end you said etsy amped up for allowance for ads to $1300 a month but i saw ad spend for more than $5k
Ad spend is the money I spent on Ads. The budget set is per day, so when I increased it to $1300 per day - it CAN spend up to that amount but it rarely does. On the highest days I would spend around $200 per day.
Another question lol 😂 would you mind maybe doing a spreadsheet showing all your numbers for 2023 😅 I know as thinking to print them and place them as inspiration in my shop planner ❤ 😂 I know! I am weird 😅
I have a CPA who does my bookkeeping and has all of my metrics in one place for me so I wouldn't probably go out of my way to create an additional spreadsheet lol. But if they are inspiring to you you could use this video to create your own! Or just come back to the video when you need an extra push for encouragement!
Listings will expire if they have not sold in 4 months on Etsy. You can choose to renew your listings at the end of 4 months if you want to try selling it again!
If your listing is set to manual renewal (which you can select in the listing when editing it), yes. If you have your listings set to automatic renewal, you will be recharged the .20 cent listing fee after 4 months of no sales on it.
I shared in the video that that is the maximum spend and I didn’t spend anywhere near that. For each month, I share the exact cost of my ads for the month.
Well yes - taxes are of course owed lol. Profit in a business isn't explained as income after taxes. Just like if a 9-5 salary was $50,000 a year, an individual would say they make $50,000 a year even though after taxes they probably only take home $35,000. For large purchases as well, you report your gross income (total profit before taxes), etc.
No offense, but I call BS. You would have to be making a 50% profit margin to be making 30% profit after a 20% ad spend. Maybe I am misunderstanding how you are representing your numbers, but it doesn’t make a lot of sense. I get it, I am there with you where I’ve spent 20% of my total sales on ads, but that meant my profit was only 10-15%. I’ve been working to scale back my ad spend and it’s resulting in much better profits, but I need your Q4 numbers to make more sense. I assume what you mean is you would have made that profit but for the ad spend.
No offense taken. Majority of my profit margins were actually a bit lower than 30% as I share throughout the video. I had one month dip down all the way to 23%. This is my complete profit before taxes.
Great video Taylor! Would you be willing to make an Etsy tax video? I literally have no idea what I’m doing. I know reaching out to a CPA would be best, but I just want to try to comprehend the tax situation for myself. I don’t understand which numbers I’m supposed to claim for taxes. 🤯🫠🫠🫠🫠
Thank you so much! I am actually making a video very soon discussing this 😊 I definitely still recommend talking with a CPA because I am not a tax professional and what I do where I live may be different where you are 😊
How did you get so may listings up so quickly? I find it takes me so long to do so I don’t know how to be more efficient with the small amount of time I have working full time.
I answered this in another comment but wanted to repost here since this got so many likes. My original comment for this: I was spending about 15-20 hours a week some months. 100 listings a month spread out across 60 hours is only a little over 1 listing an hour. Of course in the beginning 1 listing took longer to do because I was just learning with time I was able to become more efficient as I learned the steps ☺️

If your listing is set to manual renewal (which you can select in the listing when editing it), yes. If you have your listings set to automatic renewal, you will be recharged the .20 cent listing fee after 4 months of no sales on it.
How you paid 1000/day for ads on october??? That would be total 30000$ in month, but your revenue was 17000$ and provit about 5000$?
I shared in the video that that is the maximum spend and I didn’t spend anywhere near that. For each month, I share the exact cost of my ads for the month.
I see all the profit like other videos, but if u still havent taken out for taxes it can be frustrating.
I did every thing and no sale
46K is an insane number to me because if you convert it to my currency. The government would be chasing after me to pay my taxes😂
Promo`SM 😃
Why would you censor the word "Ducks"?
What? lol I didn’t censor the word ducks 🦆
@@TaylorPOD 0:08 right at the beginning of the video.
@MortonMcCastle that’s just a squeak sound for the ducks that popped up. Thought it was cute.
@@TaylorPOD ☺️ Yeah, I gotta admit it is cute.

I am actually making a video very soon discussing this 😊 I definitely still recommend talking with a CPA because I am not a tax professional and what I do where I live may be different where you are 😊
@@TaylorPOD thank you!
@@TaylorPOD yes please lol
BS
How did you get so may listings up so quickly? I find it takes me so long to do so I don’t know how to be more efficient with the small amount of time I have working full time.
That's what I would like to know
I answered this in another comment but wanted to repost here since this got so many likes.
