      that something very stupid that i am still trying to figure out why and happens all the time. Those guys do not seem to think this works. Today my teacher was telling a story of one guy who went to his master class, a guy called pintinho who won many many titles in jiu jitsu, and sayd he invented a martial art and came to test it. So pintinho with a big smile tells him, nice, lets find out then. So the guy says, but i do not want to hurt you. Pintinho answered, do not worry, that fine, let ' s give it a try. 10 secound late you know the end of the story.

      @@nicholashewett979 I disagree, some people are delusional. They want to live the dream, and the worst thing you can do to a dreamer is wake them up. The best thing you can do for a dreamer, is to wake them up. Elucidation is painful but necessary. But as far as combat vets, there is a world of difference between a war fighter and a martial artist. Neither is better, they are just different.

      Mental Illness and personality disorder plays a very big part.
      I have been wrestling and grappling in different forms for many years and I work in the Mental Health field.
      A great deal of these people desire the recognition from people that they actually have a great deal of respect and admiration for. There are a few cases of fakes using their pathology to defraud others but in my experience there are more of them than not that are experiencing a mental illness of some sort.
      This guy handled the issue fairly well.

    I've never understood why anyone would want to fake being a BJJ black belt. BJJ is one of the few martial arts where if you are faking, people are going to know right away. As soon as one of the students feels your game, they're going to know you're not a black belt.

    • @joescott1377

      Exactly right. So easy to spot a fake in a few minutes or less. If you tell me you were a high level boxer, I would know in minutes after you demo some punches & especially spar. How can someone think for a second they can fool someone. Even a bjj blue belt could spot a fake black belt. Just crazy.

  • @LoxagosSnake

    BJJ at its finest. I'm still new and I see examples of chivalry like Ruben's every day. I was talking with one of the 'elder' students and jokingly said that the only reason I'd quit would be lack of money. He immediately exploded with a full game plan of how the instructor would still let me join and even if he didn't, they'd all arrange meetings with me to show me the techniques, as long as I stuck to the art.
    I might as well work as a stripper as long as I don't have to quit BJJ. What a blessing.

    Danny, I am a 24 year military vet and have spent more than 42 months in the middle east Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Bahrain). Thanks for the kind words. I also watched UFC1 live as I was a teenager when that happened and have always been interested in BJJ. I have alot of issues from military service, psychological, failed marriage, so my act of self love lately as I am retiring from the military was to take up BJJ just for the health benefits and I love it. It's humbling yet true. It's rough physically so I can only hang about once every other day. I love the fact that it is pressure tested via rolling, that is what makes it the best, and I have only met the best people since I started. So I am a white belt, I absolutely respect Brazilian jiu jitsu, imo you are definitely not gonna fake your belt, it is like stolen valor, except you can test them right then and there. I have only been training a couple of months and I undrrstand basic drills like elbow escapes (shrimping), bridging, base, sweeps etc. I think you are absolutely fine in your response to a fake black belt. As a white belt I thank you because that guy could have been my first exposure to BJJ. So thank you.

    I just watched the other video where you called the fakers bluff. I think you handled that extremely well, considering those belts are earned with sweat and blood. The fact that you left the door open for him is a true sign of the integrity you practice. Whipping his ass (as you mention might have happened at some schools) would not have been consistent with who you are- a teacher, an example, a role model for your students. I just wish more people could follow your wisdom and not see martial arts only as a way to intimidate and hurt others. I applaud your restraint- it is obvious that you could really hurt that old man.

I am currently studying BJJ at 44 and am a white belt. I have 30 years experience in Kenpo Karate and achieved my black belt in 1993. The one assumption that I do not appreciate was that karate black belts didn't work as hard as BJJ black belts. I'm not getting into which arts are better bc I appreciate all martial arts. I studied Aikido under the great Ro kyo Dan, 6th degree black belt Sensei, Robert Danza, at the New Jersey School of Unarmed Self Defense back in the 80's and 90's and was proud of my painstaking accomplishments. I no longer train at the do-go, but I keep it up and enjoy it for myself. Funny how we can spot a fake a mile away especially the ones who say they rarely used martial arts but seem to have endless stories of when they had to. I'm a much older guy but you deserve all my respect sir.

    I think this is a great video and I really wish that it was shared more because I do not appreciate the way that people are villainizing Alvarez because I think that he handle the situation perfectly that lying fake belt guy was way too disrespectful on many levels he didn't know the order of belts and he just seem like an attention seeking / wannabe .Its is so disrespectful to all of them men and women who put the time and money.+ sacrifices into training

    As a martial arts instructor I can empathize with Mr. Alvarez. I trained for many years (and took many a beating ) before I was awarded my Black Belt and I respect any student from any system that does this. I don't do BJJ but I respect it for the brilliant martial art that it is! I have been a Black Belt for most of my life (yes, I'm an old git) but if I were to apply to be Mr. Alvarez's student, I would happily, and respectfully, wear a white belt.

    I think this was a very good video. Clear and very detailed. I find it interesting too that there is an operating assumption that students are honest in their description of prior experience. Totally understandable: why would people lie? But this was a nice description of good will and trying to err on the side of being reasonable. Good job.

    There's a guy in my algebra class who I've known since middle school, though we're not best friends. He keeps telling me he's a better martial artist than me and better guitarist, better than me at everything and even claims he has a black belt in Karate. When he tells me all of those, I don't even believe him. To me, it doesn't sound genuine. It sounds as if he's joking around like he often does or simply wants attention. He has so much shit to say, yet he doesn't say it genuinely in my opinion and doesn't show any proof of any of those. I showed him what I have accomplished, which was a grand champion trophy for taekwondo forms I won at a tournament one time and when I ask him to show me something, he doesn't show anything. In my head, I'm thinking he feels the pressure. He's afraid to face reality in my eyes. With all of this being said, don't be around those frauds and obnoxious people. Don't pretend to be something you're not. It drives me nuts when you say so much and don't say it with legitimacy, even if you want to take it as a joke. I personally don't find it a joke.

    I don't blame Ruben for getting as mad as he did. It's bad enough he was claiming a status he never earned but that he actually sold people on the lie. No one likes being played a fool so with that in mind I think Ruben demonstrated enough restraint and didn't "teach" him some of the more advanced techniques. People are saying he shouldn't have embarrassed him by calling him out so publicly, but I think Ruben and some of the other guys who fell for the story initially felt even more embarrassed and betrayed.

      Keep in mind he was. 21 year old black belt.
      Never been in an actual fight. Is 5’4
      Drinks a bottle of water with 2 hands.
      He’s a complete Nancy.
      His bjj sucks. Unless you’re wearing a ghost suit so you can grab
      It’s jiu jitsu. A man with no limbs can succeed in that sport.

    • @LoxagosSnake
      @LoxagosSnake 7 років тому +3

      I don't know about Karate, but this is a sad truth. I started doing Taekwondo about 10 years ago. It was ITF (the traditional branch) and man, it was *so awesome*. You learned the techniques step-by-step and repeated them to exhaustion until you mastered them before progressing to the next level. The conditioning was brutal. It was truly preparing you to become a Taekwondo fighter, not score points. That also meant that you had to shed blood to get a half-belt and after it took me 4 years to reach green - and that because I was working hard.
      I see the Olympic version, WTF, and I want to cry. It's rare to stumble upon a good ITF school. I'm not bragging, but I've sparred with WTF Black Belts and they are my level at best. Watering such an art down is fucking sad.
      I also recently picked up Muay Thai along with BJJ. I think this is the *best* striking art you can learn to be efficient.

      Don't forget boxing. Although Muay Thai will teach you decent punching skills, boxing really is the best for punching. I think if you train in that, you will have a near impenetrable stand up game. When I have mastered Muay Thai, I'm gonna learn Boxing to perfect my punching.

    • @LoxagosSnake
      @LoxagosSnake 7 років тому

      That's a very sound decision. While I wouldn't trust my life in boxing solely, since it's pretty much the simplest martial art/fight sport ever, just focusing on improving those 3-4 different punches makes for a hell of a game.
      The only reason I'm not getting totally dominated by the older guys in Muay Thai is because I have decent boxing game.

    • @benf4628

      Dimitris Kokkaliaroglou
      Yea, the toughness and the well roundedness of Muay Thai combined with the footwork and the vast array of techniques you use to avoid punches of Boxing provides the ultimate stand up striking game.
