Most mini roses we can buy here in Canada from grocery stores (FreshCo, No Frills..), Walmart and Homedopot are Kordana series bred by Kordes, licensed to Westbrooks to grow locally. They are sold as pot roses by Kordes in Germany but once you plant them in the ground, OMG, my 4 mini roses are just growing out of control, delivering me 70-80 flowers per plant per wave of bloom. If you have a Kordana Grande, the flowers can be 7-8 cm just as big as you can get from any shrub roses. Kordana Classic ones are a little smaller in terms of the flower size. The most impressive thing from the Kordana mini roses is the life of each bloom. The official claim from Kordes is 21-24 days of shelf life and it is certainly true. They last super long. One thing people probably are not aware is that the small pot you get from the grocery store actually contains 4-5 plants in it. You can definitely separate them and replant them into multiple pots or locations in the ground. I am a big fan of these mini roses and will keep collecting more colors.
Thanks for your input. I know Burnaby Lake greenhouses is big into mini rose production too. I don't know if those Kordana minis have much scent that I've noticed - what's your impression? Great growers though!
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm Kordana Grande and Kordana Classic have no scent but Kordes has released a new series called " RosAroma" which they call it "Pot roses with scent and good shelf life". I was actually looking for a lady banks yellow climbing rose and came across a sunblaze golden on clearance. This is supposed to be miniature but here we are in October, Zone 7b and it is huge, full of flowers and new buds! Love it!
I just bought two at Trader Joe’s on Thursday with the purpose of nurturing them. I was able to identify one as Gigi, its red and white striped. The other is a beautiful deep yet bright purple with a nice fragrance. I can’t seem to find that one anywhere online.
The fragrant miniature purple rose your referring to is called "Parade Lamy". I know because I work at Trader Joes, but right now the supplier we buy from are no longer listing it. There is another miniature bright purple rose that is even more pretty with stronger fragrance, called "Vineyard Song".
Jason, these are just beautiful. I have "knockout" roses (I don't know the names) three are snow white and three are pinky/red. I feed them rose food and "dead head" them, and they just continuously bloom from May until it gets cold. I live in ri I am unable to find out what zone I am in. Hopefully, not the Twilight Zone! :)

I put in 3 knockout petite red roses this year and and loving the small amount of space they take. Thanks for sharing the great colors. Do you ship to the USA yet?
Do you have a video on the care and pruning of miniature roses in containers please? I planted some that grow to 60cm and 80 cm but don't know how to trim them during the flowering season and how they need to be pruned. Love your videos they are always so helpful. Thanks Melene. No, I haven't done a video specific to miniature rose care, but I'll put it on my list. They're so bushy that I often will get into the centre of the rose and just remove a few stems to open them up a bit. Other than that, just light trimming.
Great video Jason. I have several miniature roses. And your right about their growing habits and size. I do have a question, as many of my minis are self cleaning and don't produce hips. I managed to duplicate a miniature that was growing in a neighbor's front year (with permission) but didn't know the name. I later was able to purchase La Marne (introduced 1915) and it turns out to be a twin to what I had found, only with more petals per bloom. Does anyone have any idea what variety of mini roses are typically sold in grocery stores/by florists around Valentine’s or Mother’s Day? (US) I have several but would love to know their names.
In one of the viewer comments, Uncle Wang's Garden mentioned that the Kordana series (by Kordes) is one of the main production varieties (Home Depot and Walmart). It may also vary a bit by region.

Years ago I purchased some roses from Jackson and Perkins to plant on a sunny slope. After the first year of conscious watering left them and paid very little attention to them. Of course with neglect they did very little. My thought was to pull them and replant the area. This year with all the rain we received in the Northeast US they just bloomed and bloomed. I have no idea what variety they are but watching your video I believe they are miniature shrub roses as they only grow about 2 1/2'. Can I take cuttings and propagate them as with other roses?
Hi Julie. It's not difficult to take cuttings from minis (amongst the easiest). I'd personally want to know the cultivar I'm propagating from, just to make sure it's not a patented variety.
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm How would I go about finding out what kind and variety the rose is? I'm not sure Jackson and Perkins purchase records are that good.;)
I just emailed Jackson and Perkins asking about their purchase history records. Hopefully they will be able to tell me what type and variety these roses are. Fingers crossed.
I want to know about diseases and care of rose, please. Also, what fertilizer you would recommend for Virginia's slightly acidic soil throughout the year.
You bet. Jason! This video was very cool and informal I have about 8 or 9 different miniature roses none of which have named verietys 3 of them are patented Kordana mini roses but still I have no verietys is there any tips you could give for figuring out rose verietys?
It's difficult to figure out unless the information is provided at the time you get the rose. So many similar roses have been released that it's like finding a needle in a haystack. I've advised people to check the garden center and see if you can narrow it down to something locally common - otherwise, take good notes and pictures and hope that someone on a facebook group may recognize it.
Hi Jason I love roses but indoors is so difficult because if spider mite which killed other beautiful big raise trees after having for four years the problem is we can't get the good rose sprays anymore here where I am and thank you for sharing your advice with me before to keep them going and thank you so much for sharing the beautiful video on miniature roses @ Fraser Valley Rose Farm👍👍😀😀❤️❤️🌹🌹
Thanks Annie - indoor growing can be tricky for both the growing environment and pests. I do grow indoors occasionally over winter, but I'm always happy to get my roses back outside when the weather allows.

Sure. So long as they haven't been sprayed, rose petals are perfectly edible. Some people nip off the white base of the petal as it's somewhat bitter tasting.
Thanks for the video. If you plant in containers, do you have to place the container in a shed during the winter? I am up on the hill just off of Old Yale Road - don't think I am a Zone 8 here. Very shady yard, but am looking for a small climber for a fairly sunny corner.
I do place any containers in a sheltered place during the winter - just to protect from the worst of the moisture and cold winds. An unheated greenhouse, shed, unheated garage - they all work.
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm Just to clarify... do you give them light in the shed or garage and do you keep the leaves in these places? I am a new with roses and so many questions. Thank you so much
Hi Jason, thank you for the video! I would like to ask if you have a pdf file about all the names of roses? I get clueless when people say this and that how the heck do they know all these names?
Hi Raymund. They're all listed on www.helpmefind.com/roses , and that's honestly the best resource because it's searchable and has all of the alternate names.
Sweet Revenge should be a tribute to the Eurythmics, Albums Sweet Dreams and Revenge. Love the channel. Learning a lot. Plus it’s lovely looking at 🌹. Are these difficult to take cutting from. I have a couple and the shoots are so short they don’t seem to match that criteria video you did.
As good a reason as any! Yes, minis are amongst the easiest to propagate by cuttings. You do have to modify your technique to go with smaller, somewhat softer cuttings.
I'm just wondering if you know anything about the "miniature Kordana Series Rose". Their website information doesn't tell much. The label on the pot only said "4inch miniature rose KORDANA SERIES" that would be great thank you very much 🙏🌹🌹
Hi Tiffanie. No, there's not much to say other than what you probably saw on the website: Kordes breeds different series of roses for different purposes, and the mini Kordana roses are bred for mass production of potted minis, where they're often sold without cultivar names (and frankly expected to be thrown away after the initial flush of blooms). They might grow on to make a reasonable garden shrub, but that's not what they're bred or tested for. They're offered to growers as something that will propagate easily, grow quickly, flower uniformly, and respond well to greenhouse forcing conditions.
I think miniflora is a just a renaming of miniature (to indicate it's the flower size that's small, not the plant). Mini spay I haven't really heard used so much - probably just a cluster flowering mini.
Many of the miniatures for hardy to around zone 5, but don't like to be in a waterlogged pot, so if you can offer a bit of shelter from the wind and rain, they'll appreciate it.
Sure wish I could even FIND Miniature Roses now. I've had them from the supermarket & I stupidly treated them as annuals. I should've protected them because all Spring, Summer & Fall, they performed beautifully. But I've searched locally & can't find them now. Any suggestions where to purchase Miniature Roses?
I'm told there used to be an abundance of mail-order miniature rose suppliers, but I think the business model didn't make sense when demand & prices were so low. One supplier I use in Canada is "The Heather Farm" - they've collected some of the best varieties over the years. Canada only tho, sorry! Some of the US suppliers have a few minis in their catalogs, but I haven't seen any with a full assortment.
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm -Sounds like we’ll have to take a little jaunt into Canada for Mini-Roses…when if ever, we’re allowed to cross the border 😉. The mini roses I had were just so unique & as I said, pretty darn hearty. Didn’t have to treat for any rose diseases, when my other Roses suffered after tons of rain made it hard to keep up. I’ll find them, 1 way or another!!! 🙏🏼 THANKS a bunch…of 🌹 .
@@leonacollins1785 -That’s where I got my first mini roses that were so beautiful. I guess I’ll have to wait till next Spring. You’re right tho’ a supermarket is where I’ll probably find them. Thanks good Idea.👌🏻
It's tough to make any conclusions from so little detail, but I would start with this: supermarket minis generally begin in a very warm greenhouse to grow and flower quickly. Then they are pushed out to the supermarkets in a stressful shipping step, and then they are displayed for sale, which can be stressful too depending on the location. So by the time you get them home (one more big transition) it wouldn't surprise me if they were ready to drop some leaves or worse. The best you can do it let them settle in for a bit with the least stressful conditions. In a week or two, it's good to get them into a larger pot. After that, it's just manage like a container rose: a good amount of sun, gentle air movement, excellent drainage, water and feed as needed.
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm thanks! I have a lot of success with Heriloom roses who sometimes ships their roses after removing the foliage, which helps them conserve resources. I’m thinking I should probably do the same with these minis and just let them rest a bit.
I’d like to report that my green colored miniature rose is growing really well after repotting them in a larger container. The blooms are much larger than before although still scentless. The staying power of the bloom is much longer than any other types of garden rose that I have encountered. Edited: grammar 😅
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm another update: the bloom is much larger now and still quite fresh looking. It definitely has staying power. The rose now is starting to turn ivory from green and yesterday, I noticed native bees pollinating it. I was curious and discovered to my surprise that it’s now actually starting to produce fragrance. I find highly scented roses expire much quickly than a miniature rose. Overall, I’m very impressed!
How about the fragrance ? My miniatures seem to be not fragrant. i remember reading something about that miniature roses are usually non fragrant, is it true ?
I think so. You may have to give them a favored position with protection from sun during the hottest parts of the day, but they're pretty tough overall!
Thanks Miles - I can't order from US nurseries (for the most part) so take my suggestion with a grain of salt, but I've seen minis listed on the Rogue Valley sites, and I heard something about High Country listing a good assortment as well.
We only ship small potted roses within Canada from a selection posted in February on the website www.fraservalleyrosefarm.com otherwise we focus on local sales

I wonder where I can buy these beautiful roses. I live in Texas.
There used to be a fair number of special order mini rose suppliers in the US. Maybe not so much anymore.
Hi Jason , my favourite miniature rose is rainbow sunblaze. Do u grow that too?
No, I haven't tried it yet. Thanks!
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm thank you Jason, it's nice to see you again!
This Is very delicate to handle pls help to plant in ground
Sweet Revenge should be a tribute to the Eurythmics, Albums Sweet Dreams and Revenge. Love the channel. Learning a lot. Plus it’s lovely looking at 🌹. Are these difficult to take cutting from. I have a couple and the shoots are so short they don’t seem to match that criteria video you did.
As good a reason as any! Yes, minis are amongst the easiest to propagate by cuttings. You do have to modify your technique to go with smaller, somewhat softer cuttings.
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm Thanks Jason. I really appreciate you responding to my comments. Best wishes.
Where can i buy mini rose? I saw a lot of knockout petite rose. Are they the same?
Yes, 'Petite Knock Out' is a mini. Otherwise there are a number of options available through the major suppliers like Weeks and Star.
Are these mini roses clustered together or separated? Thanks!
I grew only one plant in each spot, but you can also grow 3 or 4 together in a pot to fill the planter.
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm thank you very much 🙏. You give more information then anything I have searched.
What about mini-flora and mini-spray? What exactly are they? Thank you.
I think miniflora is a just a renaming of miniature (to indicate it's the flower size that's small, not the plant). Mini spay I haven't really heard used so much - probably just a cluster flowering mini.
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm Thank you! I never heard this words so often until I found Dave Bang's collection rose. He has a unique kind of mini.
Thanks for information. What about wintering? Many of them are held in conteiners. How they can overwinter? Indoor or something else? thank you.
Thanks Maia. Yes, I usually shelter the containers in an unheated greenhouse, but a cold room or outbuilding would also work.
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm thanks a lot
And how about cold weather season ?
Most garden centers should have the mini roses for sale again in the Spring. Even places like Safeway and Walmart should have them.
@@leonacollins1785 -That’s where I got my first mini roses that were so beautiful. I guess I’ll have to wait till next Spring. You’re right tho’ a supermarket is where I’ll probably find them. Thanks good Idea.👌🏻
I've got some that thrive here in Florida, and others that I can't keep alive in this heat.
Thanks Paul. Any star performers you can recommend?
Can we place this miniature rose plant in north facing garden bed?
They'll do best with at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sun.
These mini roses from the supermarket always die after I plant them; what am I doing wrong? Are they planted to close together?
Thanks. Good to hear!
I have a miniature Kordana Red Rose then a white drift rose
Nice low growing roses!
Would it pair well with lavender in a border?
Yes, I'd say so. Lavender may not need as much watering as mini roses, but they both love the sun!
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm thanks
So, are the blooms small? I understand about the plant heights but are the flowers, themselves, small?
Yes, the blooms are generally around 2" across (give or take)
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm Not small at all, if you buy the Kordada Grande mini roses.
How about the fragrance ? My miniatures seem to be not fragrant. i remember reading something about that miniature roses are usually non fragrant, is it true ?
There seems to be a good mix - some fragrant, some not.
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm Thanks, then my search is on again. Miniature roses are awesome for small garden.
Can those roses be grown in Egypt in regards to its weather
I think so. You may have to give them a favored position with protection from sun during the hottest parts of the day, but they're pretty tough overall!
I tried to buy Bee's Knees' from you, but it said local sales only. Is there no way for you to ship one to me? Michael, Santa Fe nm
Thanks for considering us - we don't sell into the US market I'm afraid. The border paperwork makes is a no-win situation for us.
Where is the best place to buy minis in the US?
Thanks Miles - I can't order from US nurseries (for the most part) so take my suggestion with a grain of salt, but I've seen minis listed on the Rogue Valley sites, and I heard something about High Country listing a good assortment as well.
can they grow indoor?
It's much easier outdoors in most cases, but with proper light and air circulation it's sure possible
Hermosas
Where did you buy them ?
Most of them came from a local specialty mini grower called The Heather Farm
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm Thanks
Can these vine up ??
Some do - I have a couple of great mini climbers now. Laura Ford and Warm Welcome are a couple of my favorites.
can i grow it inside
Yes, but it's usually easier to keep them healthy when grown outdoors.
My miniature roses all died .. even though my other normal ones don’t
Sorry to hear it. Mine have been fairly resilient so far. Were you growing in the ground or in a container? Outdoors I suppose.
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm outdoor :/
👍🏽
The only thing that makes me sad about miniature roses are that they don't smell! I haven't found a single one with any fragrance!
I've found good fragrance with Warm Welcome, Heidi, Sachet, Fresh Pink, Pierrine, Sassy Lassy, and quite a few others to varying degrees.
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm thank you! I will definitely keep those types in mind!
Sir do you ship..? Also website.
We only ship small potted roses within Canada from a selection posted in February on the website www.fraservalleyrosefarm.com otherwise we focus on local sales
