Should LOOK revive their 989 as a Gravel bike?

  • Indulge in some ‪@look_cycle‬ fandom with this look back at the bonkers 989 and 989 RS. A Cross Country MTB last seen in 2018 at the Cape Epic. Now, over 5 years old should LOOK bring this bike back as a progressive fat tyre gravel bike. Maybe all the tech was just too bonkers.
    In this video we show you the carbon seatpost, the integrated stem, and that massive BB65 bottom bracket, made for the famous ZED cranks.
    I hope you enjoy this video, as much I enjoyed working on the bike.

    Certainly looks very cool. It was, however, from a period where Look lost their way a bit with too much pretty user unfriendly stuff like the intergrated stem and seat mast. Glad they’ve come back to reality with bikes that can be tuned better to fit. I’ve a pre this period 585 Optimum which is still one of my favourite bikes.

    The 989 is a classic. I lusted after it back in the day. I’m glad I didn’t take the plunge with all the proprietary guff going on. It feels like we’re getting over the gravel fad, so maybe it’s time for Look to get back into the XC game. We all know the fastest gravel bike is an XC hardtail with drop bars! 😊

      Only the stem was proprietary. I owned one of those frames until 2021 when it got stolen and never recovered. It was pretty easy to live with, but the ISP made it impossible to install a dropper seat post. The bottom bracket PF30 inserts already came bonded in with the new frame so all I had to do was install the correct bb. The only "issue" I ever had with that frame was loud creaking that was coming somewhere on the bike when pedalling hard uphill which I thought must have been the bottom bracket, so I kept replacing those until I accidentally found out the creaking was coming from the rear DT Swiss thru-axle which came with the bike. The axle tapers and that tapered face is in direct contact with bare carbon on the frame and the friction between the two materials under load caused the creaking 🤣. Once I put grease on that face the creaking stopped.

    That's really not far off what gravel bikes will look like in the near future. I'm looking deep into gravel bike design right now to be able to design my own, and I really think it needs at least 700x55c tire clearance, bigger tires are so much better that it will be a common size in a few years, I'm sure. Although it might take a while, because Facebook curmudgeons laughed at me when I mentioned it 😂

    • @82vitt
      @82vitt 5 місяців тому

      @@jsvecten The RS weren't commercially available though, to my knowledge, so you wouldn't be able to put a ZED crank set into a regular 989. You could potentially try to remove the PF30 converter risking voiding the warranty, and to damage the frame, but even if you managed to, you would then be looking at having to press the BB65 bearings straight against bare carbon, which is not a good idea, and having to purchase a ZED crank set separately, and those retailed for close to £1000 not including the proprietary chain rings, back in the day. Plus to remove the NDS bearing which is installed on the crank set you need a proprietary tool which cost another £100 and Look initially weren't selling it commercially either, as they didn't want owners to be able to remove/install the bearings themselves, but instead, take the bike to an authorised Look service centre each time.

  • @galenkehler
    @galenkehler 5 місяців тому +16

    Hardtail MTB would all make better gravel bikes than actual gravel bikes if it wasnt for the low gearing and inability to run big chainrings.

    • @veganpotterthevegan
      @veganpotterthevegan 5 місяців тому +2

      The things that make mountain bikes great mountain bikes also make them terrible gravel bikes. It's not just gearing. The geometry that let's you do technical single track makes for a terrible bike that's going to be doing higher speed descents and very long stretches of riding in a straight line

    • @TheAntoine191
      @TheAntoine191 5 місяців тому +8

      Absolutely not. There is nothing terrible in riding road with a locked suspension mtb equipped with fast tire. The main reason of gravel bike is road riders can't wap their head around riding a flat bar. They think serious bike can only come with drop bar. The only other good reason is if you only really ride a mix of really smooth gravel and road and never ride anything close to interesting.

    • @veganpotterthevegan
      @veganpotterthevegan 5 місяців тому +1

      @TheAntoine191 I ride plenty with both. I'll also comfortably hit 50mph on a gravel descent which is something I definitely don't wanna do on a mountain bike🤡
      *I live in Utah and have access to any terrain I want.

    • @galenkehler
      @galenkehler 5 місяців тому +3

      @@veganpotterthevegan that's actually not the case at all. I used a BMC 2Stroke for my gravel bike at its pretty much perfect. I chose it because I was able to get close to good gearing (44t) with a road crank. The long wheelbase and long front center is right on modern gravel geometry only better, the industry will probably get to where I am in 2026 or so 😁
