Johnny, the thing I like the best about your videos is your enthusiasm for gaming. Today when I couldn't decide on a game to play I watched your SMT V review you and Kim were so excited it made me want to play the game even more. Today I have so many games it can be hard to decide on what to play and because of that I sometimes forget about the really great games I already own! I've been watching your videos and playing SMT V all day!
I remember a few years ago I was back home on a 7-day vacation and I was bored with the games I had on my 3DS. So I went into the Eshop and found SMT 4. and from there on I've absolutely loved the SMT/Persona games. Hopefully, this game is as good as the others.
@@Demiurge13 I agree with you 100% I've wasted a solid couple of hours because the map was too tiny and hard to read. But still a solid game nonetheless.
Man I also loved the fact that the battle music started when you actually got a hit in, the feeling changes so much when the hype starts on actual combat!
One of my biggest complaints about the game is that there isn't a sound effect for when your attack connects with an enemy. It really makes everything lack impact and is such a simple oversight that makes a huge difference in how combat feels. It lacks weight and force and was really frustating.
Hearing about the combat and how difficult some of the bosses are have really got me excited. I easily put in 300 hours into SMT IV because I really love the fusing and combat. Looking forward to do the same with this one.
I love the "lull" at the start of combat. And yes, this games music is top tier. SMTV is my first in the series, and I am enthralled. I've been referring to it as 'Pokemon for adults'.
First off absolutely LOVE the Nocturne shirt!!! My favorite game of the series. And I just love your passion for this game as well. Can tell you really loved the game and I love yours and Kim's joy in playing this. If I was even on the fence of getting this, I'm not now. Thanks again for a great review.
Never played an SMT game, but after watching your review and how enthusiastic you are, I will pick it and give it a try! Thanks a lot for the great review!
even though i had never played a rpg before smtv, it was my game of the year 😊 such a solid, well-refined rpg dungeon crawler with punishing difficulty and amazing battle system that has been honed over the years of atlus making high-quality games, and lets not forget the plethora of demons and themes of chaos and order that never gets old 😊
IMHO if you played Persona series and understand that buffs/debuffs are more important in SMT you should be okay to jump right in this game. SMT IV and Apocalypse were both my first and last SMT games and loved them. All I knew and heard was that I needed to use buffs and debuffs and I already practiced it in Persona 5 prior (NOT saying SMT is as easy as P5, because it is definitely harder-NOT Soulsbourne hard. But I’m just stating I carried my habits from P5 to SMT IV) And honestly the main differences between SMT and Persona is the narrative and tone. Otherwise the rest of it is pretty similar imo
I love that this review came out and that I have this game and the holidays to look forward too. It also makes me really happy to see you and your wife there reviewing a game together. Perfect opening to November
"Ys VIII" is probably the best Action-JRPG I've ever played. The story is so ... so ... heartbreaking. "Ys IX" and "Tales of Arise" comes close gameplay wise ... but the story .. oh my! It still gives me goosebumps.

Cheers to you and Mrs. Millenium, Johnny! You and Kim look great together on screen, and I'm happy to see you as a happy console gamer duo! Also, yes, I agree with the SMT comparison to Pokémon (though SMT was first). "R-rated Pokémon, but every creature is a literal mythological figure" is my one-sentence description of SMT, has been since part 4. Also, it hadn't occurred to me that the miman give that Glory resource yet, having only caught a couple. I got the first one, got the glory, and got the blurb about the resource, but it only just now, watching this, occurs to me, that it's only possible to get 1000 Glory per single playthrough as a result, and even then, only if you find all 200 miman (200 miman * 5 Glory = 1000 Glory)! Either you must get all in a single playthrough to get every perk for your character, or there's more upgrade costs than Glory in a single loop, and to get all of them you must New Game+ at least once. It'll be fun to learn which is the case!
Loving this joint review. I'm playing SMT III Nocturne now. I can't wait to play this one. Yeah to Kim. I call it evil Pokémon as well. After this review, I'm so excited to play this one.
I went into this game a complete noob and thought I was doing decent until I hit my first major roadblock which I think was the third boss (I can’t remember). But after I finally got past that point I think i got to the part with the giant demon head thing going through the school, and I stopped playing for some reason. I just finished P5 Royal and I’m thinking about going back and finishing this one but I might need to start over completely because I don’t remember much of anything and would probably be lost
Guy's the choice you made not to swear is good. I can watch your channel with my kids around. Also when Kim started I was like, no, I don't like other people on this channel but she's actually really fab. My girlfriend is about as casual a gamer as you can get. She doesn't play much at all but she always talks about how much she likes you guys, when you appear on the suggestions on the TV.
Nice to hear your positive reactions. How's the narrative in general? Is it good or its something you put in the back of your mind while you do the usual SMT stuff.
I just got the Fall of Man Premium Edition and it was worth it alone for the CDs and Steelbook. I'm about 20 hours in so far and am loving the game. For any JRPG fan this is a must play.
Finally somebody mentioning that banger of a battle theme and its perfect timing during battles :D I love how much effort atlus put even into the little things. What a time to be an SMT fan
Great review guys! I also think the graphics are perfectly acceptable. I didn't even notice the frame drops early in the game. I'm playing exclusively in handheld though. Also on the OLED so maybe the beautiful colors popping masked the frame drops 🤣 I'm only about 15 hours in and it's my first SMT game. I'm absolutely loving it so far 😍
I'm curious: what if you're a Persona fan but never played a Main SMT game before, would you recommend it? I've always liked Persona but I've never really tried a Main SMT game before, I can't really explain why but they never really pulled me in to play like Persona did, but seeing the trailers and watching some reviews got me really interested in this particular SMT game.
@@yansu841 Sweet, I'll definitely be picking it up then. Because it looks amazing but having never played a main SMT until now I was a little worried if you needed to play the previous games to know what is going on. 😋
If you enjoy the RPG side of things in Persona then you’ll probably enjoy SMT. SMT focus more on being an RPG rather than being a hybrid of RPG/visual novel kind of game like Persona. The combat is tougher than Persona because of that. So if you like challenging JRPG then that’s another reason to try SMT. In SMT, you can build your character however you want. My favorite aspect of any SMT game is the ability to build my own party of demons. You can have magic nuke demon or physical demon, healer demon, buff/debuff demon, and more. These sort of things are not possible to do in a Persona game because your character’s stats are tied to the Persona you’re currently using and you can’t really customize your party members either since they come in preset.
great review love your stuff I really think you deserve way more subs that you have. You have been at this for more than a decade and you were one of the first game focused channels I watched on UA-cam. I appreciate all the work you do.
Three things about this game annoys me to no end. However, I am having fun playing it. 1> The removal of evolutions, this was always really cool! Taking an Angel and using it till the end game, was so awesome. 2> The removal of Tiamat. It sucks that shes not in the game. This was one of my top ten monsters to use. I get that her SMT 4 design is a little... Odd, but she was always a really good power house to have. (I mean, its okay to have the P***S Wagon, but boob lady is out of the question?!) 3> The Game feels like i'm watching one of those Power Ranger like TV shows from Japan.
Been doing my first playthrough on hard. The new way of building up demons (and leveling items) has made it feel much easier because the grind for random perfect is basically removed.
The ONLY review for Shin. Thanks Folks!

I’m surprised the Japanese VA has to be downloaded. I’m only going to play it with the Japanese VA, because it just sounds so excellent.
Funfact about SMT: the Megami Tensei Franchise lay down the Formula for Games like Pokemon Digimon etc, cause Digital Devil Story on the NES was the very first "Monster Recruiting" game ;)
I think someone on the team REALLY wanted to show of the hair physics.
You guys got me so hyped for this game, we really have been waiting for this game for years so glad it's finally here!
I was just scrolling through the list of reviews and ...BAM!
I see HCG and it is the only review I need to watch.
Ugh the wait always gets harder the closer it gets to release. This looks like it's definitely gonna deliver.
Great review as always guys.
I hated that map in smt 4. It really turned me off to playing it past a certain point. Couldn't find my way anywhere
@@Demiurge13 I agree with you 100% I've wasted a solid couple of hours because the map was too tiny and hard to read. But still a solid game nonetheless.
@@nickhalfmann8397 yea, I think mainline smt games aren't good for mobile
I've beaten SMT IV, SMT IVA (almost lol), and currently playing SMT III remastered. I can't wait for SMT V!!!
I’m so ready for this game. I play the Nocturne Remastered and loved it. I still hope they do both Digital Devil Saga both together remastered
Is it a Sequel to the True Demon Ending from SMT 3 Nocturne?
It would be kick ass, if they did remasters for both Digital Devil Saga games! I love the Nocturne remaster, as well.
I came to this review after the IGN one and geez this is a proper review comparing it to SMT rather than IGN comparing it to Persona 5
That dude seemed really salty that he wasn’t playing persona 6 and that game was too hard lol
Man I also loved the fact that the battle music started when you actually got a hit in, the feeling changes so much when the hype starts on actual combat!
LOVING it when you two are going to make a review together. ❤❤❤
Can't wait to play the game either.
All the best from Germany, Henrik
Got my SMT V on pre-order! I can't wait!!!
SMT 3 Nocturne will always have a place in my heart.
This is the review I was waiting for, and it only confirms my hype! So ready for this game!!!
SMT invented monster catching and came before pokemon.
Love seeing you two on camera together!
Happy gaming!
even though i had never played a rpg before smtv, it was my game of the year 😊 such a solid, well-refined rpg dungeon crawler with punishing difficulty and amazing battle system that has been honed over the years of atlus making high-quality games, and lets not forget the plethora of demons and themes of chaos and order that never gets old 😊
This might be the best Smt game of all time. I love IV Apocalypse and Digital Devil Saga but this might top those.
I am SO looking forward to this. Last one I played was Nocturne back in the PS2 days. Love that y'all loved it!
But I’m just stating I carried my habits from P5 to SMT IV)
And honestly the main differences between SMT and Persona is the narrative and tone. Otherwise the rest of it is pretty similar imo
This is the only channel I can trust when it comes to a SMT review.
I love that this review came out and that I have this game and the holidays to look forward too.
It also makes me really happy to see you and your wife there reviewing a game together.
Perfect opening to November
Now this is a review I can trust.
I don't know what I'm more jealous of, that you got to play it early, or you shared it with your special person :)
Love that Nocturne long sleeve shirt!! Totally jealous!👍
I'm happy to say Tokyo hasn't turned into a hellscape, yet. I'll have to play this one after I finish Ys VIII.
"Ys VIII" is probably the best Action-JRPG I've ever played. The story is so ... so ... heartbreaking. "Ys IX" and "Tales of Arise" comes close gameplay wise ... but the story .. oh my! It still gives me goosebumps.
@@henrikfisch I've only just started. I finished Ys Origin and I was ready for something else from the series. I'd heard John give the game high praise so I figured that should be my next game. So far, so good.
@@MadPanicGaming Good choice. Oh man (or girl) ... I am getting jealous when thinking about what you are going to experience in "Ys VIII" which I already went through. All the best, Henrik
I just got this for $20 new at GameStop. Very excited to finally play it.
Great review! Always love seeing Kim and Johnny together talking about games its the best.
the last $60 nintendo game i’ve purchased was Fire Emblem.. this is definitely my next.
I am now watching this video, i completely skipped all SMT5 videos until i beat my playthrough, what a game, i loved it!
The soundtrack is amazing.
Wait, what?! You guys got to play this already?! I'm so jealous! Was not expecting to see this video pop up in my feed!
Excited to watch :)
Thanks for the review! I'm still on the fence cuz I'm not a SMT fan. But you got me at great combat and battle theme.
I know they are two different games but if you could only buy one would it be Shin Megami Tensei 5 or Dying Light Platinum edition on the Switch?
These two have similar mannerisms and it's cute af
One of my trusted reviewers
FANTASTIC REVIEW! I can't wait anymore! November 12th needs to get here quickly!!
Please keep bringing Kim in! She gives deep and interesting opinions and points of view!
Good to see the both of you doing this review, man I love SMT it’s so cool and dark
Awesome review, and complete with special participation of Kim! xDD
I really hope that we will get Shin Megami Tensei VI on the next Nintendo Console too (or Multiplatform).
This is this review I've been looking for
Guy's the choice you made not to swear is good.
I've been hyped for this game but you guys just got me even more hyped. Also, I want your t-shirts.
Nice to hear your positive reactions. How's the narrative in general? Is it good or its something you put in the back of your mind while you do the usual SMT stuff.
Dang Johnny, your in your 40s? Must be keeping healthy, looking alot better from your 2010s smoking days.
I’m going the success leads to a switch ant collection
This review is like having pixie cast Dia on me. Before watching this i watched thr IGN review and nearly died. Good Job bro, nice review
How is the game in handheld? Looking for a new game for my oled. I never played a SMT game but this looks hype.
I'll have to play as much of this game as I can before Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker drops!
Great review guys! Can’t wait to play.
This game and the Protagonist looks dope.
You look dope
@@BitchChill By dope, I meant it looks badass or awesome
I trust your review on rpg games than most outlets out there. Let’s go. I can’t want to pick this up.
Can you turn down/off the shadows? To improve performance?
I'm curious: what if you're a Persona fan but never played a Main SMT game before, would you recommend it?
I've always liked Persona but I've never really tried a Main SMT game before, I can't really explain why but they never really pulled me in to play like Persona did, but seeing the trailers and watching some reviews got me really interested in this particular SMT game.
Most mainline SMT games are standalone experiences, this is seemingly a perfect jumping point for newcomers :3
(I mean, its okay to have the P***S Wagon, but boob lady is out of the question?!)
3> The Game feels like i'm watching one of those Power Ranger like TV shows from Japan.
Been doing my first playthrough on hard. The new way of building up demons (and leveling items) has made it feel much easier because the grind for random perfect is basically removed.
I’ve now played little over 6 hours of SMT5 and I’m loving it q
Damn DBZ style fusion in first episode, son of a.... Im in.
