- Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster is a post-apocalyptic role-playing video game originally developed by Atlus for the PlayStation 2. It was published by Atlus in Japan and North America, and by Ghostlight in Europe. It is the third entry in the Shin Megami Tensei series, the central series in the Megami Tensei franchise. Multiple versions of the game have been published: the original version was published in Japan by Atlus in 2003, while a director's cut was released in 2004 in Japan. The director's cut was localized and released in North America in 2004 as Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne and in Europe in 2005 as Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call. A high-definition remaster was released for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in Japan in 2020, and is planned for an international release in 2021 on those consoles and Microsoft Windows.

Pokemon is a light SMT game. SMT invented the genre!
it did invent it but Pokemon is anything but the light version, it has more than SMT, more to catch, more to evolve, more moves, more storage capability, more plot, more characters in the game, more items. I'd love to have a more robust SMT mainline and I think SMT 5 will deliver
@@southsidegamer5611 For me, Pokemon is just quantity over quality. I found the battle system loop was not as fun as Nocturne Press Turn system with emphasize on buff, debuff with weakness explore with high risk/high reward rather than just a damage buff. Fusion mechanic made the system more robust compare to catching pokemon with different pokeballs. Also, the speed of the combat is way faster. Story of Pokemon game is not even Pokemon Adventure Manga of good at all. The fact that there is multiple ways to obtain demon rather than catch them all methods are way more engaging to me.
@@southsidegamer5611 Pokemon has more of a plot? Your objective is to become the League champion every Mainline Pokemon game. The plot is just recycled each Pokemon game.

I actually came here because I am bored to death of Pokemon. I got this game as a replacement to Pokemon's monotony and bland plot.
SMT is by far my favorite game series. The fusion mechanics, the demons, the difficulty, all of it is absolutely amazing. Great video!

A pity it's getting _Persona_-fied, judging by 4 and 4a and how the younger sentai-loving crew is taking over.
But then, it's been a long time coming, judging by how long they've been fucking up Odin. (Hint: he's a _magic king_ who wields *ice*, physical brusier lightning wielder is THOR's schtick!)
Honestly I love smt and persona and enjoy them for their differences but 4a was definitely the persona of the smt mainline game. Its honestly a shame. I enjoyed playing it but the cast was kinda cringe

This game is one of my favorite of all time. I've played only on PS2 though. I agree with the music thing being the best there and the battles. My fav song on it it's Amala labyrinth theme and Normal battle in amala. Both are haunting great memorable songs.
What a nice treat. I love when you and Kim review a game together. You as someone who played the original and her as someone playing it for first time. Both insights were great. Love how you both build all the fun. I can't wait to play it. Thanks to you both.

Great little review. I think what struck me most is the overall sharpness of it. That's what makes this remaster so good (and how remasters should be). So glad I finally get to play this game in its entirety. DDS and Devil Summoner next, Atlus. ;)

I did not remember the oscillating lamps in the corridor but that is definitely a reference to Mario Bava's La ragazza che sapeva troppo! This is what Nocturne is: the coolest SMT. Then SMT4 is much more refined and Apocalypse is a Masterpiece. Still Nocturne has that something...
So excited to play this next week. My PS2 copy kept freezing at a certain point and it really bummed me out, so I was very excited to see the announcement of a remaster.

@@Froge0 Hey, fine by me. If the Raidou and/or DDS remasters are as good, I'm totally in. These games are my teenage years and why I fell in love with RPGs.
I hope they do DDS next and they release them both together. DDS was the first SMT game I ever played so I really hope they do it.

I love that everyone universally wishes for a DDS remaster to be next in line.
Such a criminally underrated duology that I'm sure would do great in the more Persona-laid environment.
Fun Fact: Shin Megami Tensei pioneered the monster collecting gimmick/transfornations before Pokemon as it made its debut before Pokemon was even made

@@2F4M73 The original Megami Tensei game (the one based on the novel) was in 1987, and yes, it already had demon recruitment.
Shin Megami Tensei was 1992, a month after Dragon Quest V.

I’ve played SMT IV and it was my first mainline SMT game, so I’m exited to play Nocturne!!
It's much harder than IV is (after you get into Tokyo in IV, anyway).
A couple tips:
- Use a build guide, as you can't relearn skills on the Demifiend after you overwrite a skill on him.
- If you want the True Demon Ending, _especially_ use that guide for a physical build, as otherwise a certain boss is impossible... at least on higher difficulties, not sure about normal.
I enjoy watching your reviews so much. You're so excited about gaming and so passionate and positive about it, and it's great to see someone like myself who just loves games and loves to gush about them! Btw, I'm in the 2nd Kalpa right now, and can't get enough. This is my first SMT game and I finally understand the cult following.

I love Nocturne and happy for the remaster, I played the original NA PS2 copy and imported and play the Japanese version. Can't wait for this game again!
Let's talk about the Elephant in the Room do yu get both guest star characters or is it one on physical the other on digital.
I never played the game back then but I always loved the soundtrack by Shoji Meguro, it's really the thing that brought me onto the whole SMT/Persona franchise.
I hope that finally main line smt game has the recognition they deserve

I completely forgot the specifics, but the neck horn was a really cool occult reference,
related to the magatama and the demonic/spiritual powers

I played and finished the game almost 1 week ago and I feel so empty ... I never expected that I would love the game so much althought it's not my first SMT game that I play. It's clearly one of the best games I have ever played and it's a must have in everyones collection. Damn I miss SMT Nocturne so much.

I played through SMT Nocturne and DDS side by side around the time they first came out, having never heard of the franchise before and just looking for a way to keep myself entertained as a single barracks dwelling soldier at the time. I quickly became obsessed with the tone and depth of the world. It was definitely barren, but I thought that added to the charm. I came to love Nocturne and DDS so much that I went back and played through the entire catalogue up to that point and eventually hopped on the persona train too. This series and this game is godlike.
Has Kim always had demon eyes in the thumbnails? Can’t believe I missed that all these times.

SJ Redux was my first MegaTen game. I loved it! I grabbed this game and most of the rest of the series after beating that game. Hopefully the series picks up in the USA before too long as the games are both fun and challenging. Maybe add Demi-Fiend, Space Marine, or Flynn into Smash to boost popularity?
Haven't played much Persona (besides Innocent Sin) as I don't really do well in social sim games.

Is IV good? I have been wanting to try it out for some time but the difficulty I keep hearing about these games always makes me hesitant
@@silverfox274 IV is f****** amazing!! I was scared of the difficulty at first too, but when you get the hang of it the game is not that hard. After you fight the 2 big bosses in Naraku (those are really tough) you'll just have to grind like you would normally do in an RPG.
And beyond that part I only had problems with some of the later bosses, but not all of them are obligatory (I just wanted to finish all the quests). These guys will make you use certain strategies, which will demand specific demons in your party.
I will warn you though, never take a battle lightly because with the smirk system things may go from 0 to 100 in a heartbeat. Especially in the beginning hours, when you don't have a variety of demons enough to counter everything.
SMTIV it's a perfect way to get into the main series, and it made me enjoy it more than I did Persona. After it I played all of the ones available on the 3DS, Nocturne and now I'm going to try SMT and SMTII.

Just call it ports, it's more honest at my view.
@@JohnVmc2 if they clean the graphics, or the music, or the UI, or in any way the improve at least one aspect of the game, even if just barely, then it's a remaster. Some remasters improve many aspects, others improve just one or two elements (fps, graphic fidelity, sound).

@@JohnVmc2 remaster was a term they started using 2009 and onward, the first time I saw the word “remaster” on any game was for god of war 1+2 on ps3, other than a higher resolution there was nothing els that changed

I bought this at launch back on the PS2 but never had the time to finish because of work and it fell on the ever growing 'to complete' pile.
I am aware of the controvery over this remaster (sound quality of music, frame rate) but I'm happy to finally finish this title!
Thank you so much HappyConsoleGamer for review SMT3 Nocturne HD Remaster. I really want to play this game because I missed out a lot on the SMT mainline series and would like to get in to it. I've played Pokemon which was inspired by SMT and the SMT spinoff Persona series so to play those two JRPGs and not play what you could essentially call the godfather of JRPGs is a big mistake on my part and I hope to get the game next week for the Switch.

@@paul.1337 Yeah I've been thinking of diving into the fan translations. Back when I first got them and REALLY wanted to play them them the fan translations didn't exist. But every once in a while I see news of new patches and I think I might get into them at some point soon. In particular Megami Tensei II, which just looks insane for NES/Fami. Love the physical carts for them both though, came with really cool booklets and stickers.
You mentioning the possibility of getting a remaster of the :Digital Devil Saga" duology on modern consoles has sold me more on a game I was already going to get.
(I still have haunting memories of going to the last Gamestop in my county that had a copy of those games back in the mid 2000's to get them, only to be told as soon as I asked for them, "Sorry, but someone literally beat you to them seconds ago, and they just drove away as you got here." The devastation I felt in that moment will never leave me.)
Definitely exited for it. It should be playable on the Switch by now. I’m excited for Biomutant but until then I got plenty games to play.

SMT became one of my favourite series of all-time and easily my favourite RPG series. Persona's great, but there's something more substantial and thematically interesting about the SMT titles to me. I mean when you think about how the demons are tied to real-world mythology and folklore, or how certain world philosophies are represented, and the different ending paths - definitely one of the most interesting parts of SMT 3.
Beat it a couple times on PS2 and that True Demon Ending never gets old! Nothing like struggling through to fuse Beelzebub for the final boss. Because why not. But honestly it's the battle style that gets me most; Pokémon's Super Effect = more damage is great, but the way you get an extra turn here feels more rewarding and strategically interesting? Unless Mot spams Beast Eye, but hey...
I would love to see Kim have her own youtube channel! Not that I don’t love John but I personally connect with Kim more. We have the exact same taste in games!! ♥️

Guys if you love the demon designs and if you love artbook, and Im sure you do, look for the "Kazuma Kaneko works 1-9" those books have pretty much all the demon illustrations of the series! Actually they just announced the book number 10! They are awesome, you will enjoy them a lot!!
I spent several hours on PS2 just merging and creating new demons, it was great. Glad to see they did a HD remake of this.

I remember getting this game and being really intrigued with the dark tone and heavy metal soundtrack. I never could get past one part though so I stopped. It is very grindy as well. Also very different from the final fantasy mechanics that I am used to.
Late reply but smt series never supposed to be grindy at all. I suggest you try watching a playthrough of one of the game in the franchise and see for yourself whether you like it.
My personal favourite track was Final Battle. I'll always remember swearing during Lucifer. It felt good fighting him for nearly 30 minutes.
What did yal play the Dante content?
The protagonist's horn came from something Kazuma Kaneko had heard about seeing energy spiking from a person's neck when looking at their aura in profile.
Did you two get to play the DS/3DS Devil Survivor titles? I bet Kim would love them, she could go crazy with fusions!

Just finished SMT V (My first SMT game) and I immediately ordered nocturne. Can't wait to dive into this one. The isolation and loneliness aspect is interesting. That'll be intense.
Got a lot of SMT games and only SMT 3 Nocturne (Lucifer's call here in Europe) got me hooked. I think I should give those other SMT game a second try after I'll complete Persona 5 Strikers.
It’s a shame these companies aren’t using AI to upscale those old standard definition video segments. Even if they kept the original aspect ratio (which, to me would be ideal) the difference in presentation would be a nice payoff for a relatively minimal effort.

I love this game and still have my ps2 copy, but the only real reason I bought this is so that Atlus will see that SMT can still make money here outside of Persona. I love Persona, but we've gotten like 14 Persona spinoff games since the last mainline SMT game.

So i had no idea of the existence of either smt or persona until this year. I kinda goofily bought cathrine and the music on the jutebox and small nods to persona made me try it. Now its hard for me to want to play anything else and ive been looking into where i can get and try smt and older persona games lol. I keep asking why i didn't know about these sooner
I would dare say that the monster compendium of SMT/Persona IS a direct rival to the Pokémon roster in a way. Each deity/demon/monster has a certain design that is iconic.
Is it worth the price tag? Especially since Dante was cut and made to be dlc even though he was in the original NA release. So if i want dante i have to pay $60 for a 17 year old game. I have not played Nocturne so im just curious.

Advice to new players: the first major challenge is to get dekaja (null enemy buffs) before the Matador fight. Prepare to grind for that.
