You can tell the developers did such a collaborative effort in making this game shine! I cannot wait for myself to download this game on switch. Love the energy you and Kim bring to this review and touching on a lot of not just the bigger elements that are inspired by bigger classic games but also the little details and sense of exploration the demo gave us a preview to. Keep up the good work. This is my first time seeing Kim in your videos and she has that same level of engagement and excitement around a video game or project she' supports! Yay! I was blown away. It brought me back to the sense of wonder and intrigue about what this medium can deliver that I experienced the first time I played Chrono Trigger. Sabotage did some very cool things, just in terms of the graphics, the deliver story beats that they couldn’t have done if they’d gone with 3d. Aside from a couple of times that either the lack of visual depth or my inability to jump platforms I was supposed to be able to jump (really, literally, a couple, maybe three), I had few frustrations with getting around. It really required my attention, no reminders about what I was supposed to be doing, no hints, no mini map. Combat was pretty challenging at times, in a good way, even with the accessibility options. I did wish I could toggle those in fights to either increase or decrease a challenge, and that access wasn’t potentially soft locked behind the prologue boss battle. Otherwise, really solid set of options there.
God, this game is pretty. As far as pixel art goes, I don't think I've seen anything as beautiful as Sea of Stars. I sometimes just walk around the different locations and admire them. Even the map is the thing of beauty. The music is also very nice and fitting to the genre, much much better than The Messenger in my opinion (which had that recognizable modern chiptune vibe I don't particularly enjoy) and there are HOURS of excellent music in the game. The combat is pretty good, nothing groundbreaking, but it fits nicely and I was never bored by it. Puzzle elements are also quite enjoyable. The worst part of the game is the writing, characters and dialogues, which are serviceable at best. This is the reason I can't say it's a masterpiece. If only they put as much effort into writing as they did into art and music, it could have easily become a true classic, but it's clear that writing wasn't high on the list of their priorities. Still, it's a worthwhile experience, it just has it's highs and lows, but nothing is perfect.

I bought Sea of Stars for my Switch OLED and I adore this game. It has more than lived up to its hype. I expected it to be a good game, but I didn’t anticipate it being as phenomenal as what it is. All of the attention to the little details is beautiful but the game has a very thoughtful focus on characters and story, the relationships between them. And that is executed in a true to life kind of way. The combat is spectacular, the soundtrack is incredible. Sabotage hit it out of the park. There are so many small nods I see in game(or at least what I’m reminded of) from Chrono Trigger obviously, Lunar, Shining Force, Super Mario RPG…yet this game doesn’t use any of that as a crutch, it stands on it’s own and stands tall. I think this game could stand side by side with those legendary titles rather than be compared to them. And it looks so great even on a 65 inch tv, it just highlights all the details even more. Phenomenal game!
My highest compliment is my buddy. My best friend, who was and has been an FF6 and Chrono Trigger lunatic since we were kids, came to my house to demo this on GP. Great video! Just because I have to be that person… the most of the music from the game is composed by Eric Brown. Yasunori Mitsuda only composed about 10 tracks. I just want to give credit where it’s due because the soundtrack is amazing!
Thanks for the video guys! One thing to note here is that Mitsuda created the soundtrack for Chronno Trigger too! Definitely looking forward to play the game. The only problem for me is time 😅
I hope sabatage could work with Chained Echoes studio for their next work. with their work of art I can't imagine how great it would be if they collaborate. also agree on the music part I was hesitating if I should preorder or not at the moment, but when I read that part of the music is done by Mitsuda Yasunori I know this is 100% buy for me
This looks awesome. I'll definitely pick up the physical release by 8bitmods, err, 8bitdo? 8-Bit Eric? It's 8bit-somebody. Anyway it'll be available at Best Buy et al. I can wait. The only thing that kind of worries me is that they might try to force the humor way too often like they did with The Messenger, which was a big turn off for me.
The favorite comment I have heard is: Instead of setting out to be like the old school RPGs you remember it sets out to be like your memories of old school RPGs. Meaning it hits all the right nostalgic notes but also makes sure to modernize the experience so it doesn’t suffer from the less appealing aspects of old games that we have blocked out of our memories of them. I can’t think of a better piece of praise a game like this could receive.
Glad to hear a good review from you about this! There's been so many good games released lately but I might have to take a break from them to check this out lol
When I head Sabotage was making a jrpg style game, I was hooked. But I was sold after playing the first 5 minutes of the demo. I haven't even played the game yet since I'm moving to a new place, but I bought it on day 1 so i can enjoy it once I settle down. Very excited to play.
I had no idea about this game. A friend gave a me a code for PS5 3 days ago and I started playing it. What a game! when I reached the ice level and heard the music from the messenger!!! the music is 10/10 and one of the best OST of this year (MoonRider and Gravity Circuit are the other 2). The music from the "factory" is really good too. I'm just before the "final battle" but this game its so good that it feels like Golden Sun.
I only played the demo but i absolutely loved it - it didn't offer anything groundbreaking and that's ok because the game itself is such a charm...gorgeous pixel art, solid gameplay and a wonderful score makes this game a winner in my book. As soon as I'm done Blasphemous 2 i am so jumping into this universe at warp speed : ]

It's so RARE these days to look for reviews that does not outright tell you what the story is all about. So thank you for that and this wonderful review. I will definitely support and play sea of stars.
I checked out the demo on switch last night it's really good and the music is awesome! I wanna try the demo on ps5 now as well. Love your review you two are spot on. It's old-school with a beautiful newage twist. Thanx for the awesome review guys!!!
Fantastic review! You’ve convinced me to pick this up! Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
Love when you talk about music of game and composer. You know so much that good thank you for talk about him.
No you are winning dude not me. Love your videos keep up.
I love this game! I hope gamers everywhere would appreciate a beautiful classic style game like this 🎉
You didn't mention Yasunori Mitsuda did almost all of the soundtrack for Chrono Trigger.
I'm proud to say I backed this game on Kickstarter and I'm happy my gut was correct on this one. It's a beautiful game and I'm proud of my fellow Canadians!
This game has landed itself a spot in my top 5, possibly even top 3 games of all time.
I'm about to 100% this game once my shift's over, feels good.
I am with you on that, it also landed in my top 5, maybe even top 3 games.
have been looking forward to a review of this game from you and HAVE to add this is the BEST back and forth from you and Kim ive seen in a video, you guys always do a great job but this is the best ive seen!
I just started playing this game last night and the first thing I noticed was the music. It's wonderful to listen to!
Awesome review! I’m holding off playing it until I get the physical copy but I cannot wait. The game looks phenomenal and a total throwback to the good ‘ol days!
The game ranks right up there with Chained Echoes! It is blowing my expectations away so far!
I got Beyond Oasis art vibes from this along with Lunar and Shining Force/Phantasy Star portraits.
One of my favorite things in this game is when the band plays the game music. They each actually play the instrument on point with the music and stop playing their instruments when you talk to them.
Great review guys!
I use to dislike how you like everything but over the years I realized it’s not that but your genuine happiness towards video games and I love it! I love watching you over time and look forward to future videos!
I've only been able to put 5 hours into this (real life and a TOTK 100% run getting in the way) but i already know this is one of the best jrpgs of the last few years. The shear love and detail in there... awesome.
Love listening to you talk about games, guys, especially when it's a genre you're so fond of. Really perks my Sunday evening up
Started it up yesterday, played for 7 hours straight and couldn't stop
When you mentioned music is important. That means the review is reliable =)
I love your insightful honest reviews and think that you two are simply the best. Sea of Stars is a real treat for fans and newbies alike. Cheers from down-under (Australia).
The only problem for me is time 😅
oh wow, this is taking me back to the grandia series. we need more colorful games like this
Pre ordered my physical copy yesterday on play Asia 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
The battle music is so BOSS
13:18-13:28 I can’t wait for the physical release of the game. 😊
I hope sabatage could work with Chained Echoes studio for their next work.
with their work of art
I can't imagine how great it would be if they collaborate.
also agree on the music part
I was hesitating if I should preorder or not at the moment, but when I read that part of the music is done by Mitsuda Yasunori
I know this is 100% buy for me
Not all the music is done by him.
Just one contribution, I think.
@@chilly6470 its said he done around 10 songs
@@yangtsur.. Then I stand corrected. Thanks.
Chained echoes was made by one guy basically. It’s not a studio
@@GeorgeZimmermen yes I know, but I don't want to refer him as "chained echoes guy" so I describe him as studio instead
The look of the battles and that world map reminds me so much of Breath of Fire 3.
The favorite comment I have heard is:
Instead of setting out to be like the old school RPGs you remember it sets out to be like your memories of old school RPGs.
Meaning it hits all the right nostalgic notes but also makes sure to modernize the experience so it doesn’t suffer from the less appealing aspects of old games that we have blocked out of our memories of them.
I can’t think of a better piece of praise a game like this could receive.
The music has been fantastic!
kim is a rockstar. love this duo
Glad to hear a good review from you about this! There's been so many good games released lately but I might have to take a break from them to check this out lol
As someone who has been tired of a lot of rpgs feeling tedious and bloated this has been a great refresher. The dialog is fantastic.
When I head Sabotage was making a jrpg style game, I was hooked. But I was sold after playing the first 5 minutes of the demo.
I haven't even played the game yet since I'm moving to a new place, but I bought it on day 1 so i can enjoy it once I settle down. Very excited to play.
Awesome video Johnny & Kim 😎!
I recommend checking out the mini-documentary they did on the making of Sea of Stars. It's interesting how it was made from nothing, and a huge risk.
I buy two games per year. This is currently my February 2023 game
Dude that Black Waltz shirt is soooooo awesome.
Loving this game so much.
❤
Really been looking forward to your review of this game! Wonderful video. Thank you, guys. All the best from Sweden 🙌🏻
Finished the game in about 40 hours and absolutely loved it! I miss it already.
I just downloaded the demo even tho I have so many games I’m playing right now I just gotta check it out
