Fun fact! This series is older than Pokémon!
I like pointing that out :). Another fun fact, the issue with it being localized from the late 80s & mid 90s was from Nintendo of Americas policies on Occult & Religious imagery, which this one has both.
Air bud ilasted longer than the confederacy
The original Dark Souls Pokemon game.
Yup! Gotta bring in that wider audience with the Pokemon comparison. This might be the first time that SMT might break out of being "niche", since the Switch audience is massive!
@@taylorclark1048 kay why ess
Been playing all day and it definitely lives up to the hype. I hope this is the game that pushes SMT into the mainstream, this series deserves it.
mainstream will ruin it
@@astolfo2305 that’s a two sided coin. I’m all for more sales and better games. If, if they try to tnew ideas, stories and concepts but not try to appealcompletely to the mass.
mainstream already hates this game because it's not exactly like Persona 5
I’d never want a game like this to go mainstream.. it will be ruined as usual
Looooong time coming. The series being stuck on gimped underpowered handhelds with outdated visuals while being overshadowed by its weeby spinoff brother Persona which was getting more attention did it no favors.
I kinda wish this was a multiplatform release at launch though; as good as it looks on Switch; you can tell its struggling to be on that system just the same and would run phenomenally better on beefier hardware like PS5/PS4/PC (as emulation of it has already shown). Would be very easy to port anyway since its running on UE4.
Hell, if I were them, I'd run it through UE5 and release it on PS5/PC with extra polygons and ray tracing 4K 60fps
Despite her weakness to fire, Mermaid is another solid pick for the Hydra fight. Her signature move can melt him, even on Hard if you set up buffs/debuffs and she can wipe a lot of the normal enemies in a turn or two which makes grinding easier. It's also worth noting the quest rewards for killing Apsaras/Leanan Sidhe are two Health/Stamina essences, the Health ones helped a ton in my run since I sided with Apsaras.
On top of the great tips in this video, you can also farm for incences and balms (Incense, but for the main character) by running laps through the map for those quest NPC loot spots then teleporting back to the other end of the map. If she finds an encounter instead of an item it will often be a Mitama or four which combined with a stock of Spyglasses make for an easy way to farm Glory and Grimoires. The loot spots can rarely drop Sutras as well, allowing you to beef up your demons' elemental affinity and boost their damage output while lowering MP consumption. I got lucky with two Ice Sutras which I gave to Mermaid, but I'll bet you can find other types.
Sorry, could you maybe be a little more specific on what you mean by "those quest NPC loot spots"? Are you just talking about the "Navi" equivalent demon that flies around, giving you items when you go near the "!" spots? I thought those were static though, and once you dig them up (or whatever), they are gone. I haven't seen them respawn in the same spots. Are they actually just randomized around the map as you move through it or something?
@@Neonmirrorblack yes
@@zakizdaman Thanks. Good to know I guess, but not really practical. It's a waste of time to try to "farm" incense considering how low of a chance you have of getting one in the first place, and it's better to just progress the story and get the drops as you come across them.
This, big time. Mermaid is how I totally destroyed that boss first try, especially after having her learn Dormina and putting the Hydra to sleep
Also changing demons out gives you a bonus action in this game, so it’s a really important part of strategy to me. You can use the strong ice demons like mermaid and asparas for the first 3 turns while you use a fire dampener each turn to block fire. Then switch them out or GUARD afterwards. The guard in this game is really incredible
this is what I love about SMT, rewards thoughtful party composition and not power leveling through. There was a boss in 1st SMT4 and my party was pretty overleveled at that point, so thought they'd be an easy kill but if their HP dropped too quickly they'd fully heal themselves every time. So had to chip away their HP instead, even being OP in this franchise can be a curse lol.
The games know when you’re getting too strong too fast. When I fought against Takemikazuchi in the original SMT IV the first time, his difficulty spike gave him Megidolaon and he spammed it on his very first set of turns.
while this is true, SMT damage formula still scale from level. even though you are rewarded from composition, you still need to be a certain level to progress, unless of course going for a broken build (that aside I still love the game though! just hoping they can remove the dependency from level or at least lower the contribution of level)
true. its not all about grinding and getting overleveled
I kept bouncing off the first boss. Then I decided to really think about my team comp and do something similar to this, though my team looked a bit different. Walked over it in the first shot with a dedicated team. I need to learn to not get attached to my demons and just use them for what they're intended for.
Eexcept the fact that the game outright expects you to power level, meaning it screws players who play the game normally rather than tries to make the numbers so large it makes the game too easy...
Good tips. The game is amazing.. every boss feels like endgame min maxing of stats in other rpgs. You'll have to use 110% of your brain to fuse, refuse and inherit skills, use buffs, debuffs and magatsuhi skills at strategic moments and of course exploit weaknesses. All that and you still might just win by the skin of your teeth in a clutch "kill or be killed" round where all your demons died and only the mc is alive.
It's a very rewarding experience as it always is with mainline SMT games.
when I finally took down matador I had 14 hp and all my demons where dead. smt is such a good franchise it's about the only turn based rpg I die in it's nice to have a challenge.
Of course the problem with actual endgame is that it is painfully easy. Shiva and Demi-fiend are mostly optional and they can be tough, but SMT end game has always been kinda easy.
I couldn't have said it better! Well spoken!
Very rewarding game if you just stick with it and learn all the mechanics! I haven’t had this much fun with a turn based game since FF8 and FF10
This really is a clearly laid out foolproof guide and really set me up for the mechanics. Thanks for your hard work!
This is way more helpful than those Early OP videos for Disgaea by leaps and bounds. It’s still a good couple hours worth of burning through a crap ton of items to get your characters up to a certain class level.
Oh boy I can’t wait to try this out!
*Apsaras dodges two dream needles in a row*
God I love SMT
SMT: Here's the game. Now play.
Persona: Here's two weeks of tutorials before you can begin to play. Also you should go to sleep cuz you're tired.
I love both games, but I hate replaying Persona as compared to SMT.
I feel like it’s really just P5 that was bad for the lengthy tutorials
Persona tips: after you get out of tutorial hell go to the last save slot and just save there, that's what you'll load 6-12 months later when you want to replay the game.
Bringing 3 dampeners for each element at all times is a MUST. I always stocked them back up anytime I can and in the fight against Hydra, it protects the whole team during magatsuhi. My party at the time were Angel, Leanan Sidhe, and Mermaid.
Wow that’s crazy, that was my exact team too for the hydra fight. I feel like those are pretty good early demons
I has a tsuchigumo qnd kept hum for arguably too long and kept being like hey kid at school wanna buy a demon it's q spider with a face, out loud to my self and my dog looked at me funny
Great stuff ..i was totally overlooking the affinities over the skills that's gonna help allot.
Really loving how hard the bosses are so far. Hydra kicked my ass the first time, but after organizing my party to suit the battle better, I eeked out a victory. It was totally down to the wire. But I didn't have to grind! Excellent difficulty balancing here.
Bullshit dude i absolutely have to grind in order to beat some bosses i legit can't get past Nuwa
@@diavolo6753 Essense fuse force resist/repel into Nahobino. Either bring demons that already resist force, or use force dampeners when she charges magatsuhi. This game is all about taking advantage of resist/repel.
She was really spongey, but that was my only issue. Beat her second try. No grinding.
@@otterbeans I'll give it a try what level were you ?
@@diavolo6753 dunno, wasn't paying attention. 20 at the highest, probably more like 18.
Personally, I love grinding. I was OP against all regular enemies...they'd see me and Run like I was the Big Bad Boss Mafia guy............... That first boss humbled the (F) out of me! LMAO!
Good to know I wasn’t the only one not seeing the agility payoff. I put multiple points on agility and I wasn’t seen ANY misses. Not unlike Nocturne where I had 15-17 agility and was getting a decent amount of misses.
Awesome video! Thanks for the help 🙂
Having a light weakness is really not an issue for the first half of the game. Dark is very common. Light is not. Definitely get Black Frost's affinities when you obtain his essence.
Thank you. This might prove helpful when I get to play this game next week.
Great info here! Thanks for uploading!
Great starting tips! 😎 Being prepared is what SMT is all about.
Im still going physical. Those skill animations are on a different level
Did physical for nocturne will do it for 5 don't fix whata not broken
If you know you know 😆. Everyone else will learn
It will be strong late game trust me, you get some crazy good skills
@@SymmRTA just beat surt im like it so far
@@mockloki and physical is nutty as all hell
Thank you for these videos. Im new to the series and to say I was overhelmed would be a understatement.
Thanks for the guide mate.
Really appreciate it
I'm so glad I found your channel bro. Your content is excellent. Its professionally made and you get right to the point.
Thanks IGN.
Neko shogun with all the debuff skills was vital for me. Made fights smoother
Thx man.. This helped me out so much starting out 💯 helped out big time 💪
great video!! helped me so much. can you make some other short one like this for what's coming next (useful mobs to get, skills, quests, etc.)?
Thank you so much for this guide, my first smt game and I just finished getting set up. I think I may have over trained in the first area lol. Went with mermaid for my 3rd. Wish me luck on my journey!
thanks this is going to save me alot of time!
New subscriber, thanks!
More spoiler light progression vids would be must watches for me!
This is great. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video, it helps a lot
This is why I had issues with big reviews. This is whats fun about SMT, it doesnt needs to be persona. I personally am having a great time with the game.
Thank you!
I'm playing through on Hard difficulty, and I'm loving the grind. I like to try fighting the upcoming boss first to see where I'm at, and what team I'll need to bring when I actually fight it seriously. Then I level up a few times, buff up my demons, and bring my best. Even then, I'd only barely win battles. It's good fun!
Anymore videos coming out for this game? Your two videos helped me out a lot!
I started playing on hard mode on Friday, these tips are very good for hard mode players. I have a tendency to hoard early game stuff (which becomes useless later) I had to force myself to use essences when I began this one, thanks for confirming that was correct lol
After you beat the first boss, you can buy essences in Cadaver's Hollow. Press R in the Buy section
Right? I personally had to learn not to get too attached to my party members. if I can grab a higher demon, I'm going for it ........ :-3 Still sucks though!
@Boomstick Gaming Dude thanks a ton for the video, it made my second attempt at the boss way easier, and im finally getting a better hang of the essences system, so far loving the game, hadn´t had this much fun since SMT 3 Nocturne in the PS2 days.
By the title I thought this was going to be like some FFX videos, where people level grind to insane levels to get so overpowered that the rest of the game is a joke. I'm glad to see that this is not the case with this video. Excellent advice on how to use various things to build a good party for the first boss. The last SMT's that I played were Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga, so I'm still trying to learn the in's and out's of the essence, glory points, etc. That is the biggest obstacle at the beginning of the game and this video really helps, so that we can get comfortable with that. The biggest takeaway is to not save essence's, items or glory points, but when you run into a boss that you can't beat with your current build, use them to the fullest to make sure your team is prepared.
Recruiting Leanan Sidhe and giving her Bufu is exactly what I did as well. My team and abilities were similar in general too. Had the protag use the same four elements as well as Aramasa (for a while) to exploit Mitama weaknesses since the other party members covered light and dark.
Big thanks man, i know its been a while but this video saved me from the first boss in my first run of the game at hard diff
I never even thought about this method. For the first boss I brought apsaras mermaid and Angel all with an bufu while issuing some dark and fire dampeners. I really love how you can always find a different way to tackle bosses.
That’s exactly what I did!
I stacked up evasion and accuracy down lvl 2 on him and if even one of his aoe attacks miss it cancels his turn so he only got 1 attack round most times lol
So incredibly helpful, thank you!! This one video explained so much for me specifically Essence Fusion and the Reverse Demon Compendium. I don't think the game does a great job explaining everything you can do in the Shadow World.
Thanks! Made it easy to get into the game. I was really surprised how frequent those things that give you lots of rewards are and how cheap items are. It feels cheap in a way, but it's good because it forces you to actually use the items.
I actually used my first Aogami essence for affinities not really knowing what I was doing 💀 Is there any way to get that specific essence again?
Got this game for Christmas, about to start playing it (been busy with Metroid).
Definitely gonna follow some of these tips.
I'm past the first boss now (decided to just roll the dice and use Mermaid, which actually worked out great because Hydra used nothing but physical attacks aside from one dark breath) but I'm curious where you found the Sandman essence? I never found one and I think I got every chest and did every quest accessible before Tokyo Tower... did you get yours from a level-up?
Another thing worth noting in the must-have miracles section is that you really need the one that gives +1 skill slot to your demons. I screwed up and didn't buy that before leveling up my Daemon and ended up not having Bufu on it, and then screwed up again by progressing way too far afterwards and couldn't rollback to that point without losing way too much time. And I didn't want to re-fuse a new one and spend the time grinding it back up to ~12 or waste grimoires on it. I think it would have been a great choice for the fourth slot, definitely better than Aeros since my Daemon had the same 17 magic but could block/resist dark/fire.
Thanks!
i pumped everything into agility and magic on my level 99 char and the evasion doesnt seem to trigger that often
Yo that spyglass tip for the pendant demons seems common sense but I didn’t think of it
I have a couple of questions are artifacts just vendor loot? Also are balms and incenses permanent? Are you going to make a primer for the 2nd boss? Thanks!
Balms and incenses are permanent. And my "pro tips" video is also out. Not covering the 2nd boss.
Matt Damon's Daemon Demon's Daemon Essence.
Does the + make attacks stronger or just reduce there cost?
At the beginning of the game you can recruit a demon with life drain then just keep fusing with life drain instead of getting spy glasses to kill them
Its the one move they are never nulled from
That only really works for the first 2 areas. They do resist almighty damage, and after a while even the heavy almighty skills wont hurt them unless they crit
@BoomStickGaming What would you say mate, was the game worth the wait?
It's pretty good!
Ty ty TY!!
A tasteful P5 reference in a SMTV video. Nice. 🍻
Dude this helped me allot. I wasn't struggling allot but man was I hitting some brick walls.
Such an awesome guide the first boss was easy thank you
Picked this game up today, and your video goes to show how much I struggle understanding RPGs
How did you open up another skill slot for the Angel?
You mention adding Dream Needle to Angel to deal with Apsaras but I'm not sure if you mentioned that the first big boss is weak to sleep as well.
Would you mind doing a more in depth video on how you maxed out your elemental affinities the way you did? It would be super awesome. Thank you for the tip on having the spyglasses in your inventory.
How do you add skills from different demons on the main character?
4:22 oh no I missed out on getting her, is there another way to get her 🥺 like can she be made??
Hey! Why isnt the move "dream needle" available when I go to create the Angel at level 10? Also only 2 open skill slots rather than 3 like in your video? Is it because im missing divine amalgamation miracle?
Where do you get the dream needle from? Its not listed as an option when i reverse fuse
You never miss, I can always count on you to have the sauce!
@Boomstick Gaming how come when I try to fuse angel it doesn’t have the dream needle skill do you know how to get it ?
I used the same team but Mermaid instead of green element guy, her unique move was absolutely clutch
Is there a way to get dream needle again I messed up on that part and the single heal too don’t wanna start from the beginning but I feel I might need to.
Is there a way to get a Demon's affinities instead of their skills if you have already got their skills?
when I try to fuse the zan and bufu skills to nahobino for some reason I can’t, i’m trying to use the pixie and petra essences but these particular skills are greyed out.
I’m having the issue with Zan
just did the asperas quest and just overwrite my save ... ugh the one time I should save scum I didn't lol. Nice vid and as usual the best gameplay tips!
If I use the aogami essence and somehow deleted the unique skill is there any way to relearn it?
Nice
I would like to see a video on whether to go physical/ magic or hybrid , my fiest shin megami game, I heard in the past physical was the way to go for big numbers and outclassed magic late game. Is that the case here?
That was largely because magic couldnt crit in previous games and some lategame enemies had no weaknesses or covered them up, so you wouldnt get extra turns as caster. Phys/Magic are really close in this game and its pure preference.
@@epicadventureturtle1363 Does it hurt you longterm if you go hybrid? Or should you pick one or the other and beef it up more.
@@taylorclark1048 Better to pick one. For hard mode you definitely need vit too. So something like 2 int/strength and 1 vit every 3 levels might be optimal. Lots of people recommend agility but it didnt feel that great, definitely a worse stat than vit imo. Luck is weird because you have ways to auto crit anyways.
Thanks for this video! You really helped SMT “click” for me!
You guys are so much better at this than I am. I just barely made it through the first boss fight, while losing 2 of my party members in the process.
I hear ya on that one. But I made it harder for myself...when one of my demons died I forgot to at least revive them! >_
How are you so smart??? These tips are amazing ty!
Or You can use the Block items, i beat the boss with angel and siren on my team. Just block with fire supresser until siren end his mp, at that point hidra can't use venom atack anymore so angel its safe.
You can only use that item 3 times per fight tho
@@jonnybravo595 boss only use his ultimate atack like 3 times max, so its enough with that
@@kaitogg322 yeah but once you go further those bosses start to get more beefy HP bro and fight last longer so you will kinda need to think when to use those items during that whole fight.
Just started today. I had leanan angel and daemon for my first go on the hydra. Was level 12 and almost beat it first go. Was just a test run but now I know it's vulnerabilities I found that water boss a little harder with the demons in jars so I think with a little tweaking I'll have it done on the second fight. It's so exciting all the depth put into this game. Played persona 3 recently so I remembered some of the summons and moves. Never played a SMT but really enjoying it so far!
Thank you.
I was here 3 years ago and now im here again haha finally gonna finish this game all the way through on PC
@TamagoSarada_ I am getting it for my x box. I haven't played this franchise in along time. However it is atlus so I am sure it's still good.
WOW! I have so much to learn about SMT5; am playing on Switch > my 1st SMT ever.
Where do you get the divine amalgamation from
how do you get dream needle?.
Because of this video I actually went and bought the game last night. I was insure on the game but after randomly watching video I purchased it. Can’t wait!
I saw some of your tips videos, and i must say good work, its rare for tip videos to contain actual tips and not thinks you see if you played 30min, like press button to play the game.
There’s only two available skill slots for the angel when I tried to fuse the pixie and sandman so how are there three slots?
Where do you get Sandman's Essence?
Where did you find the dream needle skill?
How do I do the essence skills to the main character??I feel like I'm missing something right under my nose
Go talk to Sophia in the World of Darkness and do Essence Fusion, but here is what the gist is; so you can find essences in the world, your demons give you 1 every time they level up and you can later buy them. However, you can hold only 1 essence at a time from said demon, so it is recommended you spend them instead of saving them for later. If you get some of the Miracles mentioned in the video, you can do a lot more with the stuff. So if you want your MC to learn a Bufu or something, get a Preta Essence and slap that Bufu from that essence to your MC's skill list.
Very valuable information even now with the newest release.
I can't seem to pick skills from many essenses, just one at a time. Am I missing something?
Should i just sell Relics?
Like: Sods, Powder Box, Cardboard Cap Bottle.
Or can they be used for something
Just used to sell and make a little money on the side.
Once i finish my str/agi playthrough i'm gonna try this with magic, hoo boy
Another tip is *buying the elemental dampeners items from the shop*
For one turn, your party blocks a specific elemental damage.
Especially *use a dampener when you see the enemy gather magatsuhi (crit next turn), they would most likely use their strongest elemental attack*
Yeah this game sometimes be having you play it like digital devil saga with those dampeners
Oh my god I'm so dumb. I thought you had to get all magic types onto one demon before you could transfer them over to the mc. Didn't know you could transfer them over individually. This is my first SMT game so I"m a noob. Thanks for the guide.
I'm almost lvl 20, and pumped all my skills to agility. I was playing this as smt 2 lol
i am unable to fuse with a mandrake that i have on my team, am i doing something wrong?
if i buy dlcs do i need make new save or those dlc work in current save?
Work in current save
They would work in current save
When i went to create angel, it only has two skill slots, so i cant all three skills. Am i missing something?
There's a Miracle you can buy.
