Yeah. It could be worst, tho. He's got his fair share of high profile musicians singing his praises pretty much all the time: Billie Joe Armstrong and Ryan Adams, just to name a few..
He's been too contrary and self-defeating. After the Replacements he had a huge solo deal and was poised to become a alt-music giant, but he suddenly decides to be a "traditional singer-songwriter" and churn out crap. Then in the early 00's he made a huge creative comeback, but it was too low-key to make a impact. Paul's problem is that he admits he's a terrible judge of his own work and can't discern between his best and worst work, but he doesn't want to listen to anyone else, either.

Greatest songwriter (melody and lyrics) of the last 50 years (along with Neil Young) with the Replacements, pretty good solo too. This is not really anywhere as near as high as Paul can rise.
I remember when the record came out, less than a year after 9/11. I've always thought that may have been part of the influence. Like to say how f-ing depressing the events were, pushing any sane person to withdraw, and let it roll.
It's a masterful performance of an amazing song. The world isn't always a happy place and I'm grateful for artists like Paul who aren't afraid to write/sing about real feelings. There's plenty of happy pop shit if that's what you're after.
He should be recognized as an American music legend. He's far too obscure to so much of the music world.
Yeah. It could be worst, tho. He's got his fair share of high profile musicians singing his praises pretty much all the time: Billie Joe Armstrong and Ryan Adams, just to name a few..
And he absolutely is to many of us. It hardly matters to me he isn't on the same mantle as Michael Stipe or Eddie Vedder. He's our champion.
@@allrain Haha Paul said Ryan deserved to get kicked in the teeth...

one man, an amp and a guitar.
Can’t believe this was almost 20 years ago. Seems like yesterday. I remember sitting watching it. My son was like 8. I was still in my 20’s. Jeez.
This was a risk then, imagine now? Westerberg is a treasure in my world.
I remember watching this the night it aired and I choked up with the Joey & Dee Dee line.....
Yep
"I'm disappointed... (but) not tonight." *cries* That one line says so much.
Genius. I've loved Paul since 86. He's lost on so many people.
Who is Dee Dee? Tx
iirc, Dee Dee had just died a day or two before this taping.
yep, listened for 30 seconds, and it got lost BEHIND Me......where did iT go? iDo NOT CARE!

Incredibly warm and personal. God bless Joey and Dee Dee...and Paul.

Pretty amazing how so many incredible songwriters are from MLPS...
No kidding! PW, Tommy Stinson, Dan Wilson, Bob Mould, Grant Hart, Dave Pirner, Jordan Gatesmith, Craig Finn, Kat Bjelland, etc...the list goes on.
Thomas William .....Both Westaberg and Pirner belong in the rock and roll hall of fame. If cheap trick and green day are in these 2 r a NO brainer

The greatest American songwriter ever...period..no one comes close
the man who invented the alt rock genre
4:20 "I tend to stay up late at night and play with the color and things" :)
Saw him on this tour. And that was his stage setup. except by the end, there were a bunch of folks sitting up there on the couch and chairs with him.
Real music.
Paul Westerburg is a genius.
One of our treasures
And why he’d pick this tune for television is beyond me.
Not his own best friend
:)
Paul westerburg from the replacement’s been around for yrs Yea his solo stuff I like, I love his song.

That unlikely moment a Replacement met the Olsen twins.

"Joey and Dee Dee home" shortly after Dee Dee's death.
who are they?
The Ramones. Johnny and Tommy too since he sang this. Life is too damn short.
I wonder if Paul knew who the twins were or the twins knew who Paul was. And if Jay knew who anyone was.
standard tuning on this, its all cowboys chords. fucking brilliant all the same though.
Havent heard the term "cowboy chords" explain if youre still around?
He plays root notes and really tough to figure out melodic "cowboy chords". Love that term Billy!!!
Most definitely not standard. The tuning is DGBDGB.
I’m confused. He was just on the Larry Sanders show
Punk rock tie-dye suit
Are those the Olsen twins?
Just add water
Anyone know the tuning for this song?
DGBGBD
amazing. Better than Bob Dylan, more original too.
Steve Fisher "Kids say the darndest things" 😆
yes. Better than Mozart, too.
What guitar is this anybody know
Appears to be a Fender Thinline Telecaster (which I believe is a semi-hallow body).
Right on paul!! Love the way he just tossed the guitar on the couch. Jay Leno was always a tool bag!!! Haa he didn't get it at all.
Anyone know what tuning?
I've been playing it DGBDGB...I'm not sure if it's 100% correct- but it sounds close.
Eric M any clue to the chords?
There’s a weird tuning that Paul uses on most of the songs on those albums. Go to some Mats or PW tab sites and you’ll find it.
D#, G#, C, D#, G#, C
Alright Jay Leno was always cool , now he is super cool , not as super artfully cool as Paul of course . 💚
Omg, the most depressing number. I love the Replacements and Paul’s earlier solo stuff, but this song makes Morrissey seem hilarious.

Dee was his wife, Joey son
Entirely incorrect. It's a reference to the Ramones.
I saw him do this set at the old Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis.
