This is so mesmerizing incredible raw talent ....met Paul in Philly and he invited me to his next show ...put my name on a matchbook.. handed it to him ....my name was on top of the guest list ...Witnessed the Replacements in a very special way ...
If Paul isn't a genius well, he is pretty damn close! He's such a brilliant songwriter. First Glimmer is really about a first crush, an innocent affair, the awkwardness of new experiences in our youth. He never preaches, he never seems like he's trying, he just does it and there are a lot of magical moments in his songs. 👍❤
When this album came out and I first heard this song I was 20 or 21. Think Paul was in his mid to late 30s when he wrote it. Listening to it now that I’m older I definitely appreciate the nostalgic retrospective feel much more. Amazing song.
1990’s MTV’s Sunday night 120 Minutes was must watch TV, back when 90’s alt was brought into our home TVs. Paul Westerberg was one of many to share their music and talents with America. ✌️
Don’t know exactly what it is about this song, but it builds so beautifully to the crescendo at 4:50. Chills. This really was a wonderful backing band.
@@mskcouric Nah no way ..Minehan is a much better guitarist then Keith Richards..he should have been exactly where he was ..in the Neighborhoods..and THEY should have been as big and famous as the Rolling Stones ..but I digress... cheers!
Dave Minehan is a great player. Such great feel. Using a Fender to suit the dynamics of Paul's songs. Canes on a Les Paul with The Neighborhoods. The Last Rat is ridiculously uncharted on here.
it may seem crazy to some, but i discovered Paul Westerberg before the Replacements. I used to ride my bicycle past one of the last carnegie libraries ever built in St Paul on Como ave. His cds were always available there. i love his solo work as well as the mats.
I first heard of this band when I picked up the August 1991 SPIN that had Westerberg on the cover. There was a great article in there about the soul of rock 'n' roll and I bought it for that.... it was one of those days when your local suburban shopping mall record store had nothing and it seemed like nothing would ever be exciting again.... anyway there was this article about this band the Replacements and I was like, "Gotta find these guys." As it turns out, the band had just recently broken up, like a couple of weeks earlier. So I arrived to the Replacements party right after it ended, which I like to think is a very Replacements kind of story...
It’s interesting I got this album when it came out, liked it like all the Replacements albums from before, but being free from the Mats he was able to be as irony free as possible, in the best way. All his solo stuff has his signature blend of caring but not in a maudlin way. Great blend of romantic memories with no schmaltz. It has aged really well too.
true story: back in 1988 i answered an ad for a mesa boogie head that was selling in ma, back then the ads ran in newspapers, lol, and you had to call a phone number, i went to the house in Upton Ma. and Dave Minehan comes to door, i didnt know who he was but he had a huge marshall stack and then the boogie head, albums all over the place, he was so cool and nice, we talked music i told him i was a big matts fan and he showed me how to play here comes a regular I bought his boogie that day
I think it's so cool that when I go through PW and the Mats vids, there are still fresh comments being posted, no matter how old the vid. They will never fade away :)
this performance sums up rock and roll to me....especially live...forgetting the lyrics makes it real and so fuckin’ good...one of the greatest song writers of my generation...I love you Westerberg
I saw an unannounced pre-tour show at The Rocket in Providence (tour opened in Boston IIRC). Darren's band before this (The Raindogs) played Providence all the time and The Neighborhoods were right up the road in Boston (where the tour opened) saw about six shows on this tour.
One cool memory of watching this is that myself and my brother saw the band do their sound check at t.t bear Club in Cambridge,ma.( Afternoon of the the first concert of the tour ,they we're billed as "Professor Moonbeam " if I remember correctly) have seen a lot of them and usually a sound check is just a little jamming and maybe a few songs sung but not this time, the band, sans Paul who sat at the bar drinking water jammed for about 30 minutes and then Paul got on stage and they played about a 30 minute set with maybe 15 people there(That's including the band) sure wish these cell phones existed back then as I'd be able to upload a video but take my word: It was " The Ball's!!" have to thank Dave Minehan for letting us in to see a great moment I'll never forget!!
THIS IS WHEN MTV 120 MINUTES RULED THE ALTERNATIVE MUSIC VIDEO MARKET ALL THRU THE 1990'S!! DAVE KENDALL AND THIS GUY WERE GREAT HOSTS!! EVERY NEW YEARS EVE THEY DID THE BEST 120 MINUTES LIVE VIDEOS, IT WAS FANTASTIC! I THINK HENRY ROLLINS HOSTED THIS LAST ONE IN 1995!!

Thanks for sharing this. I got into the Replacements between Don't Tell a Soul and All Shook Down. I was lucky enough to catch them on that last tour. 14 songs and Eventually were the closest I thought I would come to new 'Mats stuff. Who knew they would ever play live again, even just for 12 minutes?!
All Shook Down is way underrated IMHO, bunch of damn good songs on that record. And the new Dead Mans Pop mix of Don't Tell a Soul (Matt Wallace mix) makes a number of the songs even better ... most notably They're Blind which becomes absolutely friggin stellar with Matt's mix.
Paul baby boy do you want Me to sing your song the Way they're awesome super cool coffee supposed to😎What's You Thinking🤔PAUL❤️LOVE YOU LOVE❤️( you would be surprised love❤️)
Hopefully he will tour with Tommy Stinson now that this SOngs for Slim record is out. I saw the Replacements 8 or 10 times and the first Westerberg solo tour was the best he ever played. It was nice to see him on the last tour but he wasn't taking it too seriously.
Paul has a unique gift to tap into emotions most people can relate to-- this song is one of his best.

One of my favorite songs, by anyone, ever.
The drummer rocks me to the core, man.
that's Josh Freese of Perfect Circle fame. Josh took take care of the drum duties on 14 Songs.

Westerberg is awesome. That's a given. This band is excellent and, in particular, that is one great Rock 'n Roll drummer!
Great feel for the rhythm
Josh Freese
LOVE this performance
Awesome ❤

that goes from too. I discovered Paul Westerberg and "Born for me" from "Nick Hornby's songbook" before the mats even crossed my mind.
Me too, this will sound sac religious to some, but I actually like Paul’s solo stuff better then the Replacements stuff

I melted when this song and record were released. I have been living in a freezer ever since. I've never been the same, never.
Beautiful
Definitely a good song but the Replacements catalogue was definitely more melt-worthy
Runaway Wind sometimes still brings a tear to my eye to this day ...
Maybe one of the best performances of anyone ever ....
Absolute rock and roll excellence! Thank you Paul!
Unblelievably talented songwriter, Paul Westerberg's level of artistry is hard to comprehend.

Used to wear
My heart on my sleeve
I guess it still shows
We watched
The sun fall down
And I hop on my bike
Still that night
You're my first glimmer of light
You were my
You was my first, glimmer of light
And the leaves were burning up in the street
I guess they tore that bridge out
Where we used to meet
And no one can see there
You're my first glimmer of light
You were my
You was my first glimmer of light
Wore my jacket
And I wore your sweater
Underneath the bridge
Was an Indian summer
Purple mascara
Safety pins kickin' the dirt
Took off your jacket
Took off my sweater
And we made a wish
Things would never be better
Train whistle blew
My wish won't come, oh no
You were the first glimmer of light
You was my first glimmer of light
You're my first glimmer of light
You was my first, you was my first
Wore my jacket
And I wore your sweater
Underneath the bridge
Was an Indian summer
Purple mascara
Safety pins God did it hurt
Took off my jacket
Took off your sweater
And we made a wish
Things would never be better
Train whistle blew
And my wish came true
You was my first glimmer of light
You was my first glimmer of light
You was my first glimmer of light
You was my first glimmer of light
Oh, baby now
Yes you were
Yes you were
Yes you were
