    Im actually looking at that exact tote for juvenile BPs. We live in Northern California fire country so I want lite enclosures if we need to evacuate quickly. I think I might try to cut the gasket in the lid, only leaving gasket underneath each latch and possibly adding a second layer of gasket under each latch to allow air to flow through while still keep it secure. It might allow limit the amount of unsitely holes that need to be drilled in the tote.

    Your temp controller setting will differ completely on where your probe is located. Never rely on ur temp controller for your actual temps. Also, the gradient is very important for healthy digestion in ball pythons. If you have windows nearby, more the reason to have a way to have a controller for each and 2 thermostats (one hot and one cooler) and also a way to check humidity.

      She should try using a regular heating pad, thats what i do, just have to make sure it doesnt have the 2hour auto shutoff and make sure theres a little room between the tub and the pad, the heat dispences perfectly and dont have to worry about overheating or using a temp controller

    • @mobstercrow7515

      NO! Buy heat bulb for the day that has light and buy a ceramic heat emitter for night. The colored bulbs for night time is horrible for them! Never ever use a colored bulb at nighttime for any type of animal, it is like shining a blue light in your eyes while you are sleeping, it throws them off of their day and night schedule.

    • @elenacarvell3346
      @elenacarvell3346  5 років тому

      I recommend using a UTH (heating pad) without a lamp instead of just a lamp, but it kind of depends on what the ambient temp is in the room you keep your snakes and also the size of the plastic tub you use. The best thing you can do is test it out before you move your snake into the tub and monitor the surface and ambient temps in the tub with a infrared heat gun for surface temp and a digital thermometer for ambient. Using a lamp is really to bring ambient temps up and allow them to bask under heat if they want to (mine usually come out at night and sit under their lamp for a while). Most of the time they will be hiding and using a heating pad will keep them much warmer than the lamp would at that point. Hope this helps!

  • @teamstarkid28
    @teamstarkid28 4 роки тому

    How high above your plastic tubs do you keep your heat lamps? I'm trying to find the optimal distance so as not to burn the plastic, but still close enough to raise ambient temps. Thanks!

    • @elenacarvell3346
      @elenacarvell3346  4 роки тому +1

      Brianna Suskie So it will depend on how many watts the bulb is and also which brand of lamp you’re using. My favorite are the Zoo Med ones because they have a wire hook. I use mostly 100 watt bulbs, but 75 watt works too. Average distance is about 8-10 inches. I definitely suggest experimenting to find the best height for your setup since there are a few factors that will vary based on what you’re using. Brand of tub, room temp are also things that could factor in. I would start off with higher up and move it down incrementally over time until you hit an ideal temp.

  • @yagirlsilverr
    @yagirlsilverr 5 років тому +3

    So I've been a little nervous because I want to use a heat mat and nightlight bulb but I'm worried it will melt the tub. Is there any way that I can avoid that?

    • @elenacarvell3346
      @elenacarvell3346  5 років тому +2

      それはだだまされてはいけない yes! If you buy a lamp dimmer switch you can hook up the heat mat to it and control how hot it gets so it doesn’t melt the tub! With the lamp you want to get a temperature probe that allows you to set a specific temp so once the inside of the tub reaches that temp, the lamp will shut off!

    So what's your cool side temp? 85!? Little confusing I have a similar tub set up with just a mat and I have a lamp ceramic heat emitter set up like urs I haven't used it bc everytime I tried it out the tubs kinda hot boxed like it made my cool side too warm.. I did have a shorter tub than these when I tried it out though (and yes it was on a thermostat) I'm just curious what your cool side is generally? You said you don't do a gradient you do ambient? That doesn't really make sense ambient means the temperature of the air that's all, you still need a tempature gradient so they can properly regulate their body tempature so I'm a little confused there. I will try using the lamp again with the taller tub but I can't imagine having 1 enclosures cool side right next to another enclosures heat lamp very good at keeping that cool side cool it might be worth getting more thermometers to make sure you have a cool enough cool side idk what the temp of the room is so I'm not gonna assume anything is wrong with your set up I just noticed these things and was curious, thank you for your video!

    • @elenacarvell3346
      @elenacarvell3346  5 років тому

      The temperature gradient model is sort of the "classic" method that has been taught sort of since the beginning of keeping ball pythons. There is nothing wrong with using a stricter gradient, but another option is maintaining a more stable ambient temp between 82-86 and providing a warmer spot that is about 88-90 is a method that works really well too. It will vary depending on the region you live in and the room temp, but typically there ends up being a slight gradient anyways and temps will drop slightly at night as well. With this type of set up I've found that they don't need to move back and forth during the day and instead will just come out at night to explore.

    • @elenacarvell3346

      Most plastic tubs won't release any toxic fumes unless they are actually burning, which won't happen unless they are heated beyond 100 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit). It's highly unlikely that any plastic tub you would purchase commercially wouldn't be heat resistant at temps suitable for reptiles. For ball pythons, and pretty much any reptile, you wouldn't want to have temps getting any higher than the low 90s Fahrenheit. Hopefully this helps :)

      Hey not sure if you wanted anyone else to respond, but xyz is a website that sells healthy and nicely priced snakes. The very basic morphs I have seen on that site are cheaper than a lot of places I have seen

      linda pecor sry late reply! I would LOVE to get more snakes. I’m mainly interested in Pythons and Boas. I also really love geckos and monitors! Honestly I just love reptiles in general, I don’t think there is a reptile I wouldn’t get 😂 I just really want to make sure I can provide the best for any animal I take in, really do the research, and I want to make sure I’m giving everyone love and attention. So right now life is a little crazy so probably no new snakes yet... but I’m hoping to pick up some new little guys at the next NARBC in Tinley Park (huge reptile expo) Also don’t plan on breeding, I just have never been interested in it but who knows. No time soon though!

    Where have you bought your specific tubs at? I've tried looking round Ace hardware Lowe's etc and I have not found anything that was close to your work with the lid locks like you got. The one I currently have only has two locks on the side he's a two year old and I don't think he would try to get out but I just don't want to take the chance and I don't want to put tape on the sides either....

    I'm feeling a little bit lost. It sounds like you're using a dimmer the heat pad instead of a thermostat. If I understood that correctly, why?

    • @moldyer7551
      @moldyer7551 5 років тому +4

      It's cheaper.. I don't recomend it personally I just get themostates and only recomend those. People used dimmers before themostates became well known/popular. People continue to use them bc they either aren't updated in their reptile products and care or they are just trying to save money and they aren't saving that much Mabe 10, 20 bucks. Just get a thermostat guys!

    I have had my ball python for about 9 months and he is like the same size as yours, but I feed him a fuzzy every week (if he eats) anyone know what’s wrong with him. Thanks.

    • @elenacarvell3346
      @elenacarvell3346  5 років тому +1

      Without more information it's hard to know what is wrong with him. I feed Gilly large mice, usually 2 or 3 if he will take 3. Ideally I would feed him weaned or small rats, but a few months ago he started refusing those and seems to prefer mice so I'm letting him eat mice for a while before trying rats again. Rats are more nutritious for them so once you can it's a good idea to feed rats. You could try fuzzy or weaned rats and they'd probably be small enough. Other factors you will need to check are temperature (v important) and whether or not he has adequate hiding spaces that make him feel comfortable. Hope this helps. I recommend the r/ballpythons subreddit for more detail.

    The heat pads don't burn the plastic? I have a heating pad that said don't use it on plastic...I am just leary

    • @TheGamerX12
      @TheGamerX12 6 років тому +1

      meh if you get a thermostat it should be fine. If it is a polypropylene tub it should be able to withstand about 320 degrees before melting and I bet the heat pad won't get that hot

    • @jackp9589
      @jackp9589 6 років тому +1

      GamerX12 if your heat mat gets that hot you’ve got some bigger problems lol

    • @elenacarvell3346
      @elenacarvell3346  5 років тому

      I use a dimmer switch to turn the heat down, but that is mainly so it doesn’t get too hot for my snakes. But if you don’t have any space between the bottom of the tub and whatever you’re setting it on, they can get suuuper hot because the heat can’t escape. I haven’t had the plastic actually melt, but it will warp and you’ll start to smell like something is burning. That happened to me initially with this really cheap heat mat I got that came with a dimmer dial, and I only had it set at about half power. The important thing is that you either test it out before putting your snake in, or you really have the time to check every 20-30 minutes to see how the temps are and make adjustments.

    Please do not red or blue bulbs for any type of animal at night! They do not need light at night and the light is horrible for them at night. Please buy a ceramic heat emitter from amazon you can get a 2 pack for 10 dollars. All animals need to have a day and night cycle and the colored bulbs throw them off of that cycle which is bad for their health.
