She wrote it with her own self-inflicted wounds in mind (the nail biting and ripping the skin back from her nails...I do the same thing) but I'm sure that she wrote it with all self-destructive patterns that everyone has. She's an artist. It's what she does. :)
Yes it is. Amanda Palmer, in an interview, said that this song is about nail biting, though most of her music can be interpreted however the listener wants.
People need to understand that we don’t self harm because we want to destroy our self’s but because it validates our pain, because it distracts us from reality for just a moment and because physical pain is easier to manage than mental illness. We know it’s not pretty but sometimes it’s the only way we can help ourself.
You know… 15 years later, I’m not so sure this song was a positive influence on me. But I guess it’s a good thing I was listening to the _whole album._ and that certainly had a net positive impact.
Yeah. Sadly I didn't listen to the whole album so this song became my soundtrack... along with a few others but as heavy as it is I still very much like the song and know all the lyrics even after 10+ years of not hearing it.
I love this song i relate to it so much it’s weirdly comforting but at the same time it makes me feel awful listening to it because I still sh to this song and the hardest thing is everyone thought I stopped but I didn’t I relapsed again
As a nail bitter....I totally get this and it's hard trying to stop. I get a momentary control over it and my nails are long then one day they're just gone. all gone and I feel like I've failed again. :/
Well, people use pens and pencils to dig beneath their fingernails (it's true) for both dirt and to even out the base [sometimes even knives, tops of nail clippers, nail files, etc]. And when you rip your nail off too far, it's gashed and either pink or bleeding. Similarly, pain travels up your arm, spine, and head when you try to peel a low handnail or half-off nail. So...technically, yes. That can all relate to nail biting/tearing but other things as well.
I feel like, even if she's said this, it's not entirely true... "pens and penknifes take the blame, crane my neck and scratch my name" "happiness is just a gash away" "When I open a familiar scar pain goes shooting like a star." "when I jab a sharpened object in."
Also the interview was after complaints of the song encouraging self harm, and her response was that the song was inspired by nail biting, I would probably say the same thing if i was being harassed by people about song lyrics
So it’s about 2 things, I think. Self harm relating to fingernails (ripping them off, biting, sticking objects through or under) and using her remaining nails to practice dermatilomania (hence the “crane my neck and carve my name” and “no one cares if your back is bleeding” lines)
i feel that the song is in general for self harm in any form probably she herself had nailbiting(yes it actually counts as self harm according to most psychologists)but the song is talking in general for self harm
It usually happens when your internet connection is either slow or choppy. once watched a video that was 15 mins long end at 30 seconds all of the sudden. usually a quick refresh solves the problem
Joseph Chastain yeah but a person who cuts wouldn't know that unless they heard Amanda explaining the song, without knowing it's about nail biting, of course they're going to think about cutting, I did too before I liking into it further..

Yes. I do the same
In my darkest times I found this song and it made me feel less alone. Thank you Amanda Palmer.
this song is so catchy. and as a recovering self harmer it's a song i can share with people.
It must be very comfortable to be shown this song

If no one’s there for me this song is.

We know it’s not pretty but sometimes it’s the only way we can help ourself.
The harsh truth. Maybe one day we will find a better coping mechanism.
Some want to destroy themselves
The emotions build up so high like a pressure cooker and the sudden pain opens the valve and releases the pressure
No I want to destroy myself

This song fits exactly.
I have to release the pent up hurt and anger on myself. This just says it all...
This song blew my mind when I was 13
This song makes me cry every time, it describes my cutting addiction :-(
Ikr?
I cry every time but I love the song so much.
I hope all of you in this comment thread are in a better place now, since these comments are several years old.
I love this song sm

Stella Stairs
Amanda herself confirmed this song was about nail biting.
+Stella Stairs lol do you realize what its about?
Holy crap, where have I been!??? I'm just now finding out about this group, and this is a really good song. How is Justin Beiber more popular?
Because he is making music aimed at the widest possible audience and the Dresden Dolls we’re not? Also, marketing budget?
I love that this song is actually about nail biting.

Maybe general self-harm with a focus on nail biting.
So, why does the song suddenly cut off?
most triggering song of all time
took the words right out of my mouth
Why? It's not about cutting.
Joseph Chastain yeah but a person who cuts wouldn't know that unless they heard Amanda explaining the song, without knowing it's about nail biting, of course they're going to think about cutting, I did too before I liking into it further..
That's probably true. I used to cut and thought it was about cutting at first.
Joseph Chastain haha yeah.:/ she mentioned stabbing and scars and everything I wouldn't think nail biting at first XD
no. i remembered it ended at around 2:30 and even related videos came up on the video screen. >_> Whatever, It seems to be fine now.
Well yeah, it's a given as an artist.
But few things end the way they start.
It doesn't. Perhaps it was your internet connection?
no its not?
I read this as condensation at first and was really confused for a moment
Are you entirely sure she wasn't just being facetious?
I think she was taking the mic/ lying through her back teeth.
that's weird. o_o'
i'm a self harmer and i find it very VERY triggering.
No one cares
XDDD
