  • PLEASE GOD DON'T USE THE FILE TO DULL EM :) That was just to show you the edge was not that sharp before using the homemade 1000 grit and 2000 grit belts, and stropping on my leather block. Anyway, I will let the finished blade speak for itself :)

    Love the video!
I just bought a 1x30 and have practiced on the same model of Farberware chefs knife. I bought my finer belts on eBay and my leather belt on Amazon.
People teach you wives how to wash a knife, you never let go of a knife in the sink of dishes... wash it, dry it & put it away. That's something I could never teach my mother, which is why I stopped sharpening her knifes because EVERY time I did she would cut herself.

AH! American ingenuity at its best. You solved the "bump" when the belt connections pass by the blade edge. Great video, Thanks for sharing. I would be VERY interested to see your take on a 2 X 72 built from scratch. keep inventing, thanks again.

good question, now the rougher sandpaper would be tougher to make your own belts with unless you had larger diameter wheels that the belts would ride on

Love your videos. Very straight forward, nothing added to make the viewer feel like your trying to get your 15 minutes of fame in. The "look at me" factor, hehe. After watching these sharpening videos.....I'm done using the old stone method. I will be buying one of those harbor frieght machines and going your route and thanking you in my mind for every piece I complete.

Thanks man I appreciate it, I try to keep it to the "how to", and I must say, the appleseed edge you put on a blade with the belt sanding technique will last you much longer than a flat grind if you use a sword or a knife to slice and dice things for fun. This kitchen knife is still absolutely "touch it and your cut" sharp 6 months later

Those are two outstanding videos! You're right, 1000+ grit belts are hard to find for my grinder. Your method I can buy 1000+ grit sandpaper, cut to the exact width and length of the original belt it came with and stick together. Thanks so much for this tip mate!

Great Video, and cool making your own belts.. BTW, you can loosen the bolt/nut combo, and leave it loose.. It is the tension pulley, and should be loose.. I don't have the grinder yet, going to get one now though, but, this is how most work.. I feel pretty confident, you could save lots of time switching belts, if you tried leaving it loose, and just depress the spring and change belts, and set tracking if needed.. Thanks.

Mark Thomas Thanks Mark that fixed my problem my belts were to tight. by leaving the nut loose it stopped breaking the belts. It would be great to watch a video that showed all the little tricks & tips and such.

Check out the surgi-sharp 30" leather belt for that belt sander. Would be perfect for polishing/stroping.

I have the same grinder and some scotch filament tape. It usually works well for the first 4 or 5 minutes until I start to get a slight peel on the overlapping belt. The little flap that ends up sticking out a bit starts to hit the frame of the grinder as it goes around and eventually causes the belt to pop. I notice your belt doesn't do that. Is there any kind of adhesive that you also use to bond the ends together to prevent the seperating?? Thanks for the great idea though. Just trying to perfect the craft of belt making. lol

Great video man. I own a Kalamazoo 1 x 42 and even though I would need to make a longer belt than the 1 x 30 that you have, I still like the idea of making my own belts. I currently have some belts that I ordered online, but when you order all the different grits, it can get expensive. I just need to find a place to get some good sandpaper that is well priced. Lowes seems to be limited on the range of grits.

There's no such thing as a nut that's 11/16" on a bolt that's 17mm. They're the same size, that's kind of the way every nut/bolt combo in the universe is made. It just so happens that 11/16" is roughly 17.1mm. Kids, don't try this at home, get the right wrench size to do your work.

I cringed the whole time you were fileing the edge. Urrrgggg. Nice way to make your own belts in the grits you want. And WOW that is extremely shaped. Excellent video. Good that you said to warn the wife cause OMG she could easily be in the ER if not careful! Thanks for sharing!

Mike, I'm glad you have an eagle eye ,I could see that knife cutting you to the bone yikes. I made my first belt out of 2000 grit wet paper. I was able to sharpen my knives in less than 3 min and they were razor sharp. ? If I get that perfect edge right away with 2000 grit why would i need to start with a coarse grit and move my way up. Thanks for the video. Pedro

Great video. I learned a lot watching you. For a knife that has never been convexed before, like an out of the box 110 folder, what grit would you start at?

    • @Mikeandwendy74
      @Mikeandwendy74  10 років тому

I would start with a rougher grit, maybe 320 to burn the steel to shape, then work my way up. I've got kitchen knives still psycho sharp to this day and I did them a while ago

I tried to make some 1500 grit belts but they kept coming loose don't know what I did wrong even put a second layer of tape on the belt still came apart
