    ArkansasInfidel! ha ha! even your handle is very creative play on words. Man, I was looking at my catalogs, at videos, and some folks are willing to spend $400+ for ruby sharpening stones or $1000 for some sharpening device??? Well, good for them if they can afford it-I cannot. So I wanted to thank you for your fine demonstration of a sharper edge with a belt sander and your video kicks ass! You explain everything quite well so even a dumbass like me gets it! Thank you my friend!

      My dad taught me how to sharpen knives when I was about 5-6 years old. Needless to say I haven’t had hair on my arms or thighs since I was 5-6 years old. My wife thought I was crazy until she needed a razor one time and since we were out I used one of my knives to shave her legs. She doesn’t think I’m crazy anymore!!

    Excellent video. On your leather belt some of the compound has turned black. Same thing has happened with mine and it likes to stick to the blade. Any suggestions on how to prevent this?

    • @ArkansasInfidel
      @ArkansasInfidel  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you. I always add fresh compound when I strop. Usually when it stick is when I'm letting the blade stay on the leather for a good while. It doesn't get hot enough to mess with the metal but will soften the buffing compound and stick to the knife edge. I usually rubb if off on the wet paper towel with a good amount of down force with a passive movement so to disallow the edge to dig into anything.

    • @ArkansasInfidel
      @ArkansasInfidel  4 роки тому +1

      Tools for wood turning usually require more precise jigs and equipment. I looked into them. Most turners sharpen their own or send to the manufacturer to be sharpened. Someone like me it wouldn't be worth the investment money wise.

    I’m new at this,I got green compound with a carving kit,what’s the difference between green and white and can I use the green on my 1”x30” machine ?

    • @ArkansasInfidel
      @ArkansasInfidel  4 роки тому +2

      Green is chromium oxide, which is harder than most steels and will remove metal thus, rolling your edge over potentially. White is usually aluminum oxide, therefore softer, and called a 'buffing compound' rather than a cutting compound. I've used both and the white compound resulted in a better edge. However the green resulted in a good edge as well. Lightly use the strop with compound to finish the process. Good luck!

    How would you sharpen your the serrated part of the knife?

    • @ArkansasInfidel
      @ArkansasInfidel  4 роки тому +2

      You would need to get the "paper wheel" knife sharpenibg system that attaches onto a bench grinder. Look at the serrated part and notice how there's only one angle. You will grind on the "back" of that angle until you have a uniform burr. Then whith the serrated paper wheel, apply white polish compound while it's spinning. Then use the edge of the wheel to push the inside grooves of the serrations and also the back to refine the edge.

    I’ve seen other videos say that one needs to have the leather belly traveling in the down direction, not in the standard up direction as you’ve done here. The concern is that one will catch an edge and cut the leather belt. You obviously don’t subscribe to that idea. Thoughts?

    • @ArkansasInfidel
      @ArkansasInfidel  2 роки тому

      Unless I'm misunderstanding your question, the belts on this machine only rotate in one direction(downward).

    • @johnvgig
      @johnvgig 2 роки тому

      @@ArkansasInfidel yes, I have one and that’s true. However if you flip the machine onto its face (the part that’s normally used to sharpen a knife onto the table) the backside of the belt is now horizontal to the table the belt is now moving away from you and putting a knife on the belt now would have the belt moving away from the edge of the knife.
      In other videos suggesting this belt direction owners either fid this, or installed a dc motor that can be reversed, by a switch

    Why am I getting shocked when sharpening? And how do I stop it?

    • @ArkansasInfidel
      @ArkansasInfidel  4 роки тому +1

      It happens to me at times. Especially in winter. Its the static from the belt I think. Attach some wire to the chassis and see if it helps.

    • @micahned
      @micahned 3 роки тому +1

      Static electricity from the sharpening process builds up in your body, then when you touch the machine it discharges through the ground wire in the power plug. Solutions include attaching a grounding strap from your wrist to the chassis of the grinder. Or sharpen barefoot lol
