When Tina Turner died, Bob Dylan called John Fogerty and said, you better get out and start playing Proud Mary or else everyone will assume its her song. Her version isn't right. It's not a damn dance song!
Yes this is the original version of Proud Mary by CCR. Tina Turner covered CCR Song. By yeah Tina made this song her's so much they many believe the song is hers
he single "Proud Mary", backed with "Born on the Bayou", reached No. 2 on the national Billboard chart. A cover version by Ike and Tina Turner, released two years later in 1971, did nearly as well, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and winning a Grammy Award.
This song is 53 years old now and I heard it the day it was released. It still rocks! On the single that they released this song was the A-side and "Born On The Bayou" was the B-side.
This is a song done two completely different ways, both iconic. One of the few songs that I appreciate seperate versions. I grew up watching Tina Turner perform on TV but also grew up a huge CCR fan and theirs was the version I'd listen to.
Tina Turner made this hers when she covered it and she did a great version and love to watch her on stage with it. But it's Tina Turner and she can make anything sound good. But at the same time you really can't get better than the original sound that CCR puts with this. Enjoy both, but I would have to lean to CCR.
John wrote and performed many of these type of ‘Swamp Rock’ hits and this is their most well known tune that Ije and Ztins Turner covered about 2 years later.
A shout out to a song from the forgotten album Pendulum, "Hey, Tonight!" I have yet to hear a reaction to song from that album, which is just about as good as Cosmo's Factory. A little more bluesy in places, kind of like Green River.
John Fogerty told this story: He was sitting on the front porch waiting for the mailman and received a letter releasing him of military duty after 3 years. He said I did a cartwheel on the front lawn, ran into the house, sat down at the kitchen table and wrote "Proud Mary". I guess he was in a good mood.
Wife here...CCR has an AMAZING catalog of music!!! Soooo Smooth!! Both versions bring AMAZING dynamics to the table..!!!...Ms. Tina"s version of this is soooo visually iconic.."Fierce"Yessss...
I grew up in Stockton California. Lodi is about five minutes north of Stockton. CCR are from Oakland California. Oakland is due west about 45 minutes away. CCR spent a lot of time playing (as The Gollywogs) in Lodi and Stockton before they got famous as CCR. Stockton is on the San Joaquin river and the San Joaquin delta. The river boat "Delta Queen" was docked for years in town and could easily be seen from Fremont St. My friends and I used to play on it as by this time it was all but derelict and easily boarded. No one cared. John Fogerty probably knew about The Delta Queen because he would have seen it when he was in that part of town. He may be referring to the Delta Queen when singing "River Boat Queen". The Delta Queen was sold by The City if Stockton sometime in the early 70s. It was said it was bought by New Orleans. Don't know for sure. By the way. Tina Turners version of Proud Mary sucks. CCR fan.
OMG, big shout-out to Stockton, CA! I grew up in Oakland and my maternal grandparents lived in Stockton. Spent a fair chunk of my childhood summers going to the pool in public McKinley Park on the south side. Brings back good memories.
Good reaction. For some reason I remember the lyric "pumped a lot of 'tane" meaning "Octane" meaning pumping gas. So he was washing dishes and pumping gas. I kind of remember that from the lyrics printed on the vinyl record sleeve.
We're definitely going to need some more CCR reactions. Don't remember if y'all have done Bad Moon Rising yet, but you should, along with so sooo many other songs
Grew up with these guys. No one, absolutely no one, can sing a CCR song like CCR. John Fogerty in his Creedence voice, can't be topped. John in his 'real' voice sounds different. When asked why he didn't sound the same, he said he left that voice behind, that it belonged to CCR. I had 'Centerfield' Album given to me. At first I didn't recognize him, when it played on the radio. But he still carries little quirks from his CCR days. Cosmos Factory has a song called 'Ramble Tamble' with a pretty instrumental on it you need to hear without cutting in. See if you can catch the subtle changes before he sings again. It's a song you really need to "listen" to.
This was the first version of this song I remember hearing and it will always be my favorite. I appreciate some of the covers, but the original is perfect!
More CCR PLEASE do BORN ON THE BUYOU and UP AROUND THE BEND , and SWEET HITCH HIKER and MIDNIGHT SPECIAL and DOWN ON THE CORNER and LOOKING OUT MY BACK DOOR and GREEN RIVER.
The thing is, John Fogerty had such a backlog of guitar styles, but all blues-based ... though he'd occasionally switch to country such as with "Lookin' Out My Back Door" which is Buck Owens style. As a boy, he watched Hee-haw on TV. Doug Clifford's style of drumming was fairly straightforward but always provided what was needed, evident with songs such as this one. Another is "Green River" wherein Doug brings in the beat after John's intro guitar and just lets it pound with no riffs or switchouts. But perfect for the growling groove and storyline of that song. The only thing lacking, I think, is I wish John would've done one of his famous extended blues guitar solos.
John Fogerty wrote this song in less than one day after he received his discharge from the Army Reserve. This IS the Original Version. The music is in tune with the the Wheels on a Paddleboat on the Mississippi River...
Incredible work by an incredible musician, John Fogerty. I've been down to Central America and believe it or not this song is a huge hit down there, you hear it on the radio, you hear it on TV commercials, and this is many years later after it was created. He has had an influence outside of the United States for sure, truly one of the greatest musicians of all time, John Fogerty, it's no wonder the rest of the band, including his brother Tom, we're very jealous of him, it's just a shame
I remember playing this on the ol' 3n1 stereo record player over the summer way back in early 70s and turned right up as per usual, sitting on the front steps beautiful day and this old couple walking past, they were funning round doing a bit of a jig.... well he was, trying to get her to join in, she was just smirking and slapping his hand away , saying look what ya done now. . . . a good memory of this and other CCR songs
Lead singer John Fogerty wrote this fantastic song and many others for the group. Sooooo talented singer, producer, writer guitarist. I'm listening to music since 1958 their still my favorite band ever.🎉
Glad you both dug this so much. John Fogerty wrote this fantastic song(can't imagine the royalties). Actually their my favorite group ever I'm listening to music over 60yrs. Many very good songs in their catalog. Actually timeless songs.
I loved both versions❤️ Thank you again for sharing the music of my youth! My first Band played this🎶🎶 You 2 are so fun to watch, ad you really enjoy the experience of new music👍👍🤙
Cosmos Factory was the first album I ever bought and CCRs version will always be my favorite. But the cover by the Ike & Tina Turner Revue (not Tina Turner) is classic.
When John Fogerty was in a legal battle for his musical rights he refused to do CCR songs. Bob Dylan told John if he didn't do them everybody will think Proud Mary was an Ike and Tina Turner song.
Glad you liked it. Tina did a great version, but i heard this one first. So… both are great. Just diff. More sounds of my young days-13-17 and ever since .. love Ccr! 7/17/22
I love Tina Turner's version but if you want to actually feel like you're riding on that riverboat watching the scenery go by then CCR is the only way to go.
This came out just before my ship, USS Yellowstone AD-27, set sail for the Mediterranean. No one found the album before we left. In Naples Italy I was wondering around the streets and found a copy of it. I was very popular on board.
Ahh, the Mississippi, need to check out Charley Pride, if y'all haven't heard this man sing y'all probably be in for a surprise. Also check out Alabama.
Hey y'all, back in the day if you went to a party outside in the Country, you would almost always hear this song and others like it! Very nice, especially in the Summertime! Great reaction!
I love Tina but I like CCR's version best. Tina's is more racing down the river than rollin' on the river It also gave me a chuckle that the person who did the lyric video spelled the words turnin' and burnin' as "toinin'" and "boinin'."
Bill Haley, of Bill Haley And The Comets (first white singer to do R&R), was asked a question in the early 1970s. Who are your favorite singers or groups? He said there were too many to count but CCR was at the top of his list. I like Elvis' version of this song, as he did it at MSG in June of 1972.
@@themajicman745 I disagree. Her high-energy vibe misinterprets the lyrics, which evoke a more peaceful, laid-back feeling. I'm all for high-energy songs, but they have to fit the lyrics to really make sense together.
@@themajicman745 I understand all that. For what it's worth, I prefer Big Mama Thornton's version of Hound Dog (though I don't think Elvis misinterpreted it, I just think Big Mama's sounds better).
CCR's "green river," "bad moon rising" and "it came out of the sky," a fast and funny song about UFOs, are also really good. but side two of their album "bayou country," which contains "proud mary," is one of the best album sides in r&r history. react to the entire side in one sitting. you won't be dissappointed. in fact, i'm pretty sure you'll me AMAZED!
Music and lyrics written by John C. Fogerty. Many others have sang it but Credence Clearwater Revival OWNS it! Best version hands down.
John Forgerty! Legendary 🇺🇸🇨🇦
Revival*
This version you can drink a beer and enjoy it with this song
When Tina Turner died, Bob Dylan called John Fogerty and said, you better get out and start playing Proud Mary or else everyone will assume its her song. Her version isn't right. It's not a damn dance song!
John has said....Tina. its hers.
Yes this is the original version of Proud Mary by CCR. Tina Turner covered CCR Song. By yeah Tina made this song her's so much they many believe the song is hers

IMHO "Born on the Bayou" is the better side
@@sharonsnail2954 I agree
The original by John Fogerty (this version), is so mellow and relaxing. Just like being on the river. Great reaction you two👍
This song is 53 years old now and I heard it the day it was released. It still rocks! On the single that they released this song was the A-side and "Born On The Bayou" was the B-side.
CCR. In my opinion one of the greatest groups of their time… We had so many, the music was exceptional and it still is all these years later
My favorite band of all time. Does my heart good to see younger people discovering CCR and really enjoying what they're hearing.
This is a song done two completely different ways, both iconic. One of the few songs that I appreciate seperate versions. I grew up watching Tina Turner perform on TV but also grew up a huge CCR fan and theirs was the version I'd listen to.

If you feel like doing another CCR reaction, you'd love the song, "Long As I Can See the Light." It's one of their most soulful cuts. Cheers!
Yep, Cosmos Factory (maybe their best album, they a lot of great albums).
Rival Sons do a great cover of "Long As I Can See The Light". Not CCR but very respectable.
A shout out to a song from the forgotten album Pendulum, "Hey, Tonight!" I have yet to hear a reaction to song from that album, which is just about as good as Cosmo's Factory. A little more bluesy in places, kind of like Green River.
Great suggestion
Oh man, can't ever go wrong with CCR, they have a sound like no other. Fogerty was an amazing singer and a songwriting genius.
Yea but like and Tina rocked it.😂
To think, good 1st wife left because his music career was going nowhere.
John Fogerty told this story: He was sitting on the front porch waiting for the mailman and received a letter releasing him of military duty after 3 years. This is just a Great song. I just love watching how music can bridge generations, cultures, and races.
One of the best bands back then.. CCR. Takes me back to high school. Thank y'all
omg CCR !!!!!!!! They have no bad songs !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥
I grew up listening to CCR. One of their hit song in 1970." HEY TONIGHT.
Y’all should check out their version of I Heard It Through the Grapevine
The original proud Mary
I love CCR my favorite rock band. We love you two
A classic CCR song
This is the original, and the best version for sure.
CCR originally sang this song, in 1969. Tina Turner did the song in 1970.
Those who grew up with the music of that era listening on with a FM Radio or even AM at night with Wolf Man. We had it good.

always thought it was pane as in propane
@@Cynthorrpg1 You are correct, Fogertys version says pane, Tina's version says tane👍✌️
@@kennyhuskisson2684 Interesting, yeah...I looked up John Fogerty singing it at Farm Aid 1997. Sure enough "pane"
CCR one of the best mixes of rock and Cajon blues

John Fogerty wrote it and SANG it.❤️

When John Fogarty of CCR wrote this he had never actually seen the river. A Cali boy sure could write songs. And his voice, priceless.
CCR a national treasure. Saw them 5 times in Cali back when they were just getting started.
