This reminds me of my 11th summer (1963).. I built myself a mini bike out of an old lawn mower engine and my bike.. then some of the kids in the neighbor hood wanted me to help them build one.. the parents finally talked to my dad and made me stop building them.. Those too were death traps.. no brakes (I had to drive through lawns to stop) lean over to work the throttle.. yeah wonderful days.. It was great to be invincible then.. WHAT FUN!
Checking back in after not watching many vids in the last year. I'm truly stoked for how far 2SS has come along! It's inspiring and I hope this community and work keeps on going for a long time.
This takes me back to the early 80's, where we assembled dangerous contraptions out of junk engines, junk wheels, junk frames, junk anything, LOL! We'd have a blast on them on a remote location and it kept us busy and entertained, also bruised, cut, burned and scratched up :)
I've learned a lot from it, eventually became a moped/motorcycle mechanic and entered races with dirtbikes and onroad bikes. Best thing i ever raced was my Honda MB50cc, tuned and developed in my living room, where it now has a prominent spot.

I ride a Gilera SMT50 from 07, basically a rebadged Derbi senda that uses the ebs50 engine, this kickstart only version of the engine you’re using. I’ve had it since new when I was 16 and love it. Internally, all I have changed is oil, rings and head gasket. Externally most components are changed for upgrades. I ring the nuts off it, power peaks around 11k and it embarrasses plenty of bigger bikes. I’ve done over 25,000 kilometres so far and it’s still going strong. These are brilliant engines when you look after them! Hope you enjoy this one!

watching alex's endeavours takes me back to my youth.....always cooking some mad stuff up with pushbikes and engines.doing what my parents called bonkers....but it's just that "what if i did this" to me....reminds me of how much crazy stuff i got my head into.bravo alex.
One of my first bikes was a midbike (a little larger than a pocket bike) that I cut a chunk of the frame out of to put a much larger engine in. It ran over 50MPH on 6" wheels and had no brakes at all for a while, and it could flip itself over on WOT shifts from 1-2 and 2-3 but you had to take your left foot off of the peg and reach it way out front to do the shift while trying to hang on. This kind of bike will make you feel alive... if you manage to stay that way. Good luck with the project. Always fun to watch.

I’m sure you already know this, but If not, I’d file the fingers on that clutch basket flat. The grooves or notches from the plates moving back and forth will keep the clutch from disengaging properly and make it harder to find neutral or it’ll try to move with the clutch lever pulled.

Frame is flimsy.... Cut some more off the frame.... Hilarious! Love it! Should be less flimsy now because some of the flimsy stuff was cutted off😂! This is some real old school stuffing! Take this engine and throw it in that frame. Did this a few times before and it was always a good time! I plan to restore my old gixxer katana and upgrade it with newer wheels and suspension. Can't wait to see your newest build running!

awesome project mate..i wish i could show you photos of the bikes we used to build from a bicycle frame std front wheel and a wheelbarrow rear wheel and powered by a victa 2st mower engine..no clutch, no brakes and chain drive..we even ran the mower throttle lever..oh the happy days of youth hey..cant wait for the completion here

I've seen a couple of people 3d print their own sprockets for dirt bikes and surprisingly they worked fine.

I've been thinking about printing my own rear sprocket for my cheapo China pitbike because i can't find one with more teeth😁

@@boxedfender4810 I'd say max 125cc for a 3d printed sprocket. Any higher i think the engines torque would rip the sprocket appart. But for smaller bikes like 50s and 80s i think it could work for some time, unless you constantly clutch dump to do wheelies😁

There is a certain beauty in the way you said "this is going to be more of a hacksaw and file type of build". And I am saying this as a mechanical engineer/ CNC programmer. I know exactly what you mean and why.

I had the same experience tearing apart an old Cox .049, found a bunch of really gross stuff inside and decided to do a full teardown and rebuild and got high performance parts that should make it much more powerful.

Have you ever throught about using an SX50 clone as a base platform? You can get them cheap off of aliexpress and are automatic, a little heads up for anyone out there looking to mess around. Youre really sucking me in to the 50cc world im about to try and get this old 46cc saw off my stepdad to play around with as its close to the 50cc mark and will give me a platform for experimentation with pipe size, carb tuning, spark advance, port timing etc...

Watching that opening - wholly cow! When you tap the bottom like that - it drives the non-contents back into the bottle - not out! You gotta tap it where the neck meets the bottle so it drives it out. Come on!. Also - that gear you made is f*cking amazing.

That was a jigsaw not a hacksaw, a hacksaw is the hand powered metal saw. Has anyone ever told you that when you TIG you want it to be as clean as possible? You don't want oil/grease/paint on your metal to be welded and you want as small of a gap as possible. Really it's true for any welding but TIG it can really mess up your tungsten and make welds look like crap for quite some time. A tip for the clutch cable farrel is to solder the cable into it. It's what old brit bike guys have always done. Oh and have you ever thought of getting a set of racing bicycle tires for your moped? The tiny 1 inch wide low profile high pressure tires really do make a difference in rolling resistance, plus they tend to be MUCH lighter so it's less unsprung weight for the engine to have to turn. I messed with one of those bikes when I worked at Walmart and it's insane how little effort they take to move.. they are expensive though.... or not.. they were when I was working, now they are only like $25, the tires that is.. I'm sure the rims are the expensive part. Yeah pretty much.. there's some cheap ones and some over $1400 each for aluminum rims.. that's not even carbon fiber racing rims. O.O
And make sure you are welding in a pool of gasoline

Metal wire is good for matching parts. Loops around bolts and shape what needed.

You should get one of those frames with the fuel tank built into the frame tube from aliebaba.. They even do a motorized bike that has a harley davidson tank and springer forks and looks like a bike from the 30s

love it, used to have an old jawa 210 moped, put tomos mag wheels on it and a 90cc pitbike motor. was a fun lil rig. hauled my fat ass around quite well, didnt stop worth a shit tho. such a fun death trap

i have a derbi senda with the EBE050 motor myselv, and i would say get the D50B0 motor instead, you can get bigger cylinders for it and it has 6 gears original or it's restricted but just a new gearstar then u got 6 gears.
Clutch plates and springs looks like metrakit aftermarket ones.
I made a motorized bike with 80cc 2 stroke. Had no exhaust brakes and bent rear rim along with no pedal shaft. And i got it to 45

May i suggest matco's new step drillbits, they rule!
Try to use less pressure on drill bits you will snap them less if you do that. I learnt from snapping many myself lol. Hss drill bits are ok but HSS-R are better. but cobalt is even better but more expensive.
Dmp 5 plate clutch and malossi springs can handle About 20hp and doesn’t cost much

A idea for you, in the old times I used to fly small aircrafts with diesel engines.
These engines run on a special fuel, petroleum / ether / castor oil.
How about to try it on a 50cc engine, should not be difficult to modify / built one.

My First Moped Was Just Like that one LOL!!! (DEMM 49cc) or a motobecane I cannot remember what i got first.
No Brakes , No throttle (Rope to a Nut that i pulled) And No Pedals had to push start, NO EXHAUST Yup... My Poor Ears , And No Seat LOL! , Lawnmower Carb.Broken Spokes , Bent Forks ,no kill switch , o Working Clutch! YUP!!! She was a Death Trap!
I pulled her Out of my Local Dump! And i bet i put on close to 100Miles on her before... I got pulled over by the cops... And Well... They impounded it seeing i was only 14 years old.

Would it be possible to upscale a two stroke compression ignition engine to say 50cc I wonder. I recently machined and built a 1.8cc two stroke diesel and it struck me it might be worth upscaling it to a much greater cubic capacity. I do get the impression that the high rpm combined with high rotational mass involved in such a project might not be feasible?
Lohmann did it years back with a variable compression two stroke diesel engine that was sold as a very small bicycle bolt on. Memory fades but I think it was only about 25cc, it was powerful but very fussy to get going.
@@alandavies55 the difficulty in getting that engine is typical of these engines as any slight flooding of fuel in the crankcase renders them un-startable. Thanks Alan for the heads up though and do you know what fuel the Lohmann engine ran on? I’m looking at making an engine that runs on paraffin, ethyl ether and castor oil pre-mix.
@@shaunchurchill4594 In theory they would run on almost anything, but were hard to start. Used to start mine on easy start, and run on pump diesel.
