I didn't take off the metal plate because I didn't have the right tool to get to the top bolts so I just stuck my hand inside and pushed the solenoid back in place and that worked for me.
Mine the spring on the shifter handle broke and wedged itself between the shift handle and the column and I'd take a screwdriver pick a couple of pieces of the spring out
My 07 is doing the same thing today and I need it fixed to go to work tomorrow. Hopefully this is the problem

If it won't go into park you can put it in neutral. Make sure your on level ground and use your emembrace brake.

Older cars would start in netural as well as park.
Mine was really Wiggly and loose but it was still connected with the zip ties help?
Did u ever find the problem cause mine is still connected also but still don't want to go in park sometimes
