FYI - It is VERY difficult to snap the part onto the ball studs, at least it was in my 98 truck. My original part was missing so there was a little surface rust on the ball studs. I scrubbed them with a wire brush then put a little silicone on them. I had to use a long screwdriver to press it on, it was a total PITA! You feel like the part is going to break, but it will eventually snap on. Thanks for this video, I really appreciate it!!
Your video saved the day for me. I was 60 miles from home when I couldn't get my chevy Silverado out of park. I saw your video and I was able to get the truck in gear. Thank you so much. Great video!
Wow. Been fighting my 2 door Tahoe for the past couple of months. Popped the clip, and saved a painful troubleshoot. I can't thank you enough, but I'll buy you a beer down the road.
@NVSRides Hey Man-it shifts perfectly..even without the arm/solenoid attached. Seems sketchy to me -without the other retainer on the end of the rod pushed on there. How you feel on just reattching the old arm end just to snug the linkage?
You could try it and just leave it unplugged. I don't even have it in my white suburban and have not since I made this video. Just know it could be shifted out of park without a foot on the brake.
Yo Brother- Thanks again for your expertise. I have a question.. Again my vehicle is a 1995 1500 Sierra. The vehicle has close to 300k...so I am aware of part life expendency. What MG question concerns is the speed sensor..it fluctuates-🙁🙁 On my model the speed sensor unit is 90% contained in a housing on the transmission/tailhaft. Can I remove this myself or does it have to go to a shop? PLMK when you get a chance. Thanks man-
So glad you made this video. I was stuck at the boat ramp trying to pull my boat out of the water when mine when out. I watched this video and only had a pair of pliers and a screwdriver. Took a little bit to disconnect it but it worked. After watching this I was able to get home. Thanks
Mine just started doing this. I was looking and looking and this made sense by what i could see. I unplugged and now i can get it out of park but i definetly will replace the part. That's why i stick with this truck because. They are old enough that most issues are known and not expensive to fix. I feel sorry for others who have newer vehicles and have to get the dealership to fix them. Thanks man you saved many many allot of headaches.
I suck when it comes to mechanical issues. I lack the skill and the patience. But you made this video so simple I was able to fix my 1995 GMC Sierra which was stuck in front of someone's house for like a week. Thanks
Holy shit THANK YOU! Simple and easy to understand, you showed where it was and now I am not embarrassingly stuck in front of a customers house anymore!!!
Video was a great help. Would add that on a 2004 Suburban, there is what looks like an ECM and a vent tube blocking access to the part. You can pop the vent piece out, and a 7mm socket can remove the bracket for the ECM-looking box. The box drops, and there is the part you need access to. Hope this helps, and thank you for a very helpful video.
I was out in the deep woods when I found that I could not get it out of park. Your video was a lifesaver. I like the details like, "push down here to remove the plug." (That was actually the hardest part.) Amazingly, I found a new OEM replacement on ebay for less than $30, including shipping. (Thanks for listing the part number.) I never comment on videos but this one was very well done and it saved me $$$$$! Great job!
@@NVSRides Thanks for the help. After doing this, still no go! Called my mechanic that found the shift linkage clip had came loose under the truck. Something else to check. After he put back in, it worked great. Will file this in the back of my small brain for future us though. Many thanks again.
Sorry it was not the case with yours. I am going to pin this comment in case someone else has the same issue. Thanks for sharing, commenting and watching
@@NVSRides Thanks for the return post. No reason to be sorry, you gave me a great start troubleshooting the problem. Great mechanics are hard to find, especially those willing to help those that are stranded. May you and your family be blessed. Thanks again.
Okay, That was an awesome video. I immediately thought the worse when my Yukon did that tonight. Many thanks for showing the part number and that Amazon had it. Blessings to you sir.
Thanks for the insight on how this solenoid fits in. Just a couple things I did different. Unclip the arm from the shift lever, shift works. Unclip the device from both ends, work it out to the bottom and you can disconnect the electric plug a lot easier. After you get the device snapped back in place, with the vehicle in park, slide the round part as far aft as possible then push the white tab in to lock it. Otherwise you may not get the safety feature to work. The round part needs to be as far aft as possible so it can lock the shaft with the indent in the shaft.
🎉🎉🎉😊I been stranded several times lately on 99 Suburban since our friend fixed brakes n tire rods. I tht it would be a $300 plug harness .( as in hubs big truck land everything is $$$$$$)
You saved the day!! Spot on for my 98 Silverado! I replaced my trashed transmission cable a year ago, which had rusted apart underneath my feet. And I was now scratching my head as to why I was having problems again, i.e. stuck in park. I was getting ready to look in several other possible areas for the problem, then I stumbled on your video. Huge Thanks, and thanks for taking the time to post the very helpful video!!
This video saved me big time when my 2000 Tahoe Z71 locked in park. Thank You. And you did great job explaining it, that 90° screwdriver trick made it easy.
Wish I would have found this video earlier.. got stuck at the gas station with my truck stuck in park. Had to tow it home. Definitely gonna try and fix it myself this weekend.
Thank you for your video on this repair. I recently bought a 1997 Chevy C1500 Suburban and noticed a problem shifting out of park. My repair manual doesn't cover this issue clearly and you made it so easy to understand. Again thank you.
Thank you - have 2005 GMC Yukon that is hard to get back into park. It will move into all the other gears but have to play with it to get it back into park. Thanks again.
Ive been dealing with this problem for weeks, I replaced the damn brake light clip sensor on the brake booster push rod, it shifted great for a week then today it started again. This video helped me allot, now I'll be replacing the correct part. Thank you.
@@NVSRides especially when the first time this happened i was a 35 minute drive from home and I'm a single dad and needed to get home to get my kid from school. Ended up having to get the truck towed which coasted $250. I replaced that brake sensor and truck worked fine for a week and just today going to pick up my kid from school it decided it wasn't going to shift again. Luckily her school is close enough to walk. Been stressing out all day, started searching for answers and finally found your channel and it will definitely help me fix the problem. Damn truck is gonna be the death of me lol.
I know I drove around with the part not in the truck for awhile. I really hope this helps nothing worse than the stress of kids depending on you and things don't go as planned. Thanks for the time to write a comment.
Thank you Señor, for the insight of that actuator. It’s supposed to lock the little bar in place to prevent the truck from shifting into park; but the little mounting hole and the bar go mounted on some ball joint studs, on the shifter and the column. I think you have to put use some seam sealer or Gorila Glue on the terminal and actuator mounting hole, to mount it back on the column and shifter. In my case, there was no bushings or anything where it buttons to the ball joint studs.
Seriously. Good job on this video. There was nothing out there to describe this fix. I feel better knowing that I won't be totally stuck, and I can bypass it, as mine has been acting up for a little bit now. Thank you again.
I have a 2001 chevy Tahoe z71 & your video is awesome & explains it SOOOOO much better than any video I’ve watched. It seems it’s much easier to access on your GMC from underneath I literally couldn’t get my head in there to see from near the pedals 😅 so I took the knee panel off & there’s the metal plate in front still that I may have to take off 😂 but I was able to get the green clip off just not the wires yet. Having acrylic nails & limited hand space is my enemy at the moment. Chevrolet dealership also just told me that the part I need is called automatic trans shift lock so I’m hoping they’re right. Again, thank you so much for your video & very helpful information. I’m hoping this is the issue because I already had my trans gear shift cable changed from it being stuck in park cause right now we have to shift it from underneath truck & I can’t do that by myself. Hope I can get this last part disconnected so I can see if that’s my issue.
Thank you, excellent video. Another video did show you turn the ignition key to just before it starts. Tthis allows you to shift into neutral and then start the truck. Once started shift into gear, go home and replace the solenoid. Keep on Keeping on!

Broke the shifter mechanism on my suburban because of this. After replacing the mechanism myself i still obviously couldnt shift out of park lol so grateful i found this video though. Thank you.
Outstanding! My truck is 4x4 and it gets way out there. Also, my Son drives it. This is a life saver video. Thank you!! I may just cut into the wire and bring it up to a toggle switch on the dash. That way I can always have it enabled, but if it fails, just click the switch and open the circuit.

I googled gmc park shift on my phone, got this video and saw the green wire and shape of the shift interlock solenoid, stuck my head under the dash and found it on the drivers side of the steering column, disconnected the plug and VOILA! Thanks man! Your video made my day. I almost broke the shifter after I had a long day at work trying to put the damn thing in drive smh 🤦♂️ lol Everyone stopped laughing when I watched your video and put it drive and left 😂💯
Dude....you rule! Finally a usefull utube video! I just got my 99 tahoe back today after shelling out 450.00 dollors forba brake booster replacement. I was on my way home and stopped for gas. Bingo....cant shift. Popped the wires off and went on my way! I drive heavy trucks and grew up in the 70's when you actually had to have a brain to drive. All the old cars would shift without a foot on the brake. All heavy trucks will start in gear. DUH! .I wont be fixing it . I will just keep using the common sense god gave me unlike todays drivers who need automatic breaking and cars that park themselves.
Thats awsome info brother! You saved me a major headache I'm gonna try it. Just ran all new brake lines wheel cylinders shoes and pads and cant get out of park. Thanks a lot your AWSOME!. I SUBSCRIBE to the channel thanks again.
Thanks you have been a lot of help . My problem is no brake lights so it will not come out of park. All fuses good , brake switch I think same spot under dash .
Thank you for the help and part number... but in All Honesty... the best part is that after watching several times....I could fix it myself ☺ Thank You VERY Much..
Man this was a helpful video thank you soo much for explaining everything so good and very understandable step by step made my job easier thank you sir!!
Awesome video. I don’t know if this is the problem but it will get me a hell of a lot closer if it’s not, stands to reason that maybe I knocked that white clip off when I was fishing some wires through the dash for a light bar so fingers crossed and thanks again.
PS: The problem occurred for me after everything was put back together and I backed the truck out of the shop and it wouldn’t go into park so right back into the shop it went where I had to chock the wheels and disconnect battery because as you said, no park means the key stays in.
Thank you very much for sharing this video was very helpful I have one question my truck won't shift gear its stuck in park is this the same part that is cosing the problem ?
yes i do and i did. It's the right thing to do bro. You took the time and energy to make the video and i got the information for freeeeee. You are the man. Keep up the fantastic work. Now i can burn rubber.
Dam after reading through all kinds info your fixed work so at least I can get home and I know what's wrong I'm not any kinda mechanical I'm a musician and it took 10 mins after your video thx bro
Thank you very much! Just had that happen to my 1996 Sonoma today. I must ask in general... how much extra is spent in the factory on crap like this? With it bypassed it's not like a kid could shift it from park, you still need the key turned. Seems like a 25 year old bs saftey... like mandatory rear view cameras now
The small white tab on my replacement unit is completely out of the adjuster block. How the heck do I get it back inside so I can fully insert it once installed? Thanks!
I can physically get my shifter out of the park position, but then it travels the whole range but doesn’t shift into the gears. Is this tye same problem?
Same problem with my 2000 Z71 5.7L Classic OBS Tahoe. Nightmare. Crank, no start ..Gauges don't work. .The problem is even with a diagnostic OBD11 reader, is that if you can't start the vehicle, you cannot get a code. Catch 22 situation. Sounds like you are right to change out the solenoid, but that could be only the tip of the iceberg.. How much do I need to spend getting my 21 year old Tahoe back on the road? A new Z71 Tahoe is insanely expensive, so I am stuck with trying to figure out what is not working..
I've had this problem in my project truck for a while now and always started it in neutral. Just by happenstance I recently fixed this on my moms GMC envoy 2006, seems to be a regular problem with those also.
08 Yukon stuck in park and can't move the shift lever. My stabil track and traction control light is one also. So maybe the this part is not getting power to release?
FYI - It is VERY difficult to snap the part onto the ball studs, at least it was in my 98 truck. My original part was missing so there was a little surface rust on the ball studs. Thanks man! Your video made my day. I almost broke the shifter after I had a long day at work trying to put the damn thing in drive smh 🤦♂️ lol Everyone stopped laughing when I watched your video and put it drive and left 😂💯
I am glad it helped you out. Thanks for the comment and story. Glad you got the last laugh as you drive away.
Great Vid,
Just an FYI if your stuck…. if you turn your key one click to accessory you can put your truck in neutral and then turn the key to start.
I am stoked this helped you. I don't have mine hooked up. The replacement part didn't last. Thank you for the comment. 🙏
Awesome ty so much. You ask the part store for an interlocking solenoid they don’t even know what you are talking about.
You are welcome.
Thank you your video just rescued me from the gas station in my new Used1997 sierra God bless

If you unhook the wire it should work. I really hope that is what the problem is. Let me know and good luck.
Thanks soooo much giving that a try tomorrow
I really hope it helps you out. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.

>> *Thank You making this video. I will try to remove the black-green wired plug. >> I sure Hope This Works.!! > Cause I am older and short on funds.

Seems like a 25 year old bs saftey... like mandatory rear view cameras now
Son of a beeatch!
Thanks a ton! I thought I was losing my mind.....er well.....I am but......holy shit.
Thanks!
Glad this could help. Thanks for watching and you are welcome.
I replaced the part, and it's still acting up
Worked great thank you man :)
Thank you for the comment.
The small white tab on my replacement unit is completely out of the adjuster block. How the heck do I get it back inside so I can fully insert it once installed? Thanks!
Best video out on this issue thanks
Thank you so much.
You are most welcome. Thanks for the comment.
Mine shifts from park when it’s on but I haven’t fully started the car but won’t shift from park when I have started it. Is this part responsible?
Would this same part keep it from shifting into park because I can shift into every other gear but part?
I really want to send you a gift I was about to drop my transmission pan
Glad I was able to help you. Thank you for the comment.
I can physically get my shifter out of the park position, but then it travels the whole range but doesn’t shift into the gears. Is this tye same problem?
guess i'm gonna have to subscribe now. you saved the day.
You don't have to but I am glad the video helped.
You helped me out of a big jam. Thanks!!!
Your welcome I am glad the video helped. Thanks for watching.
Yes a lot of gm vehicles had and have this issue. Sad but at least it was an easy fix.
Thanks man!! This really really helped!!!
You are welcome. Glad this was able to help you out. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you for the video. The only problem I’m having locking the white tab in. Any suggestions? Thanks
08 Yukon stuck in park and can't move the shift lever. My stabil track and traction control light is one also. So maybe the this part is not getting power to release?
Great video, thanx. Question: When you pushed the sockets onto the knobs, did you have to use a lot of force to get them to pop into place? Thanx...
Thank you man!!!
You are most welcome!
I almost traded it in, tired of quirks😂😂😂
These vehicles are really pretty good minus they are getting old and things are starting to fail on them.
