I am going to a local college after I graduate to become a firefighter paramedic. Thank you sir. You have helped inspire me.
I have complete respect for firefighting since my dad was a captain. But it's important to be clear about the ugly side of it. Firefighters tend to be first on the scene and the things they see can be traumatizing. People need to understand its not all good. The things you see can greatly effect your mental state of mind and cause ptsd. Which in turn can create stress on you and your family. You can't save everyone and some situations may hit close to home, prepare for that.

Ever since childhood I (like many kids) loved watching the fire engines go by. Most grow out of it..I never did. The first "real" book I read was "Report From Engine Co. 82"...(RIP Dennis Smith), when I was 8 years old (I've read it many times since). Met Dennis by chance in '86 at the offices of Firehouse magazine. Anyway, whenever I would look at images/film of the horse drawn era, I would feel "goosebumps." I always found this very profound, and powerful. I questioned it. In 1988 when living in Northampton, MA (was dispatching in Amherst for Hampshire County), I had a vivid dream of being in an 1800's firehouse, there was a classic-to-the-era looking man --handlebar mustache and all, sitting at a desk; I turned around and there was a steamer. On it's boiler was emblazoned "Philadelphia 1882"...I then recall a bell sounding, and then I was running down a cobblestone street, with a tremendous weight on my shoulders. Fast forward to 1996, I was living in Boston; I was in the Boston Public Library (Copley Square) studying for a tourguide job; I'm flipping through a book and see an image if what I believe to be that steamer from the dream. Okay Erich, now some nice people in white coats are here...just let them put this special jacket on you; they'll be bringing you to your new home...you'll love it.
One more year in high school till college so I can finally start EMT classes and other stuff so I can help people that are in need and etc, But there will always be negative thoughts about it but watching your videos gives me great knowledge about what to expect by becoming a firefighter and important things to understand about becoming it. One day that day will come and I’ll be right back here thanking you for giving us so much amazing and truthful information that we all need to hear! I’ll be back once I achieve this great goal, But until next time everyone❤️
Start my department's academy on Thursday! Still want it, now I'm gonna earn it. Thank you for all of your insight and wisdom for the next generation of FFs, Mike!
I'm 24, landed a really nice job right out of college but it's left me wanting so much more. I feel like my time in my prime would be better spent in the field instead of sitting at a desk.
I agree 100% with what you’re saying , especially the part about this job being meaningful and being recognized because the impact it has on others by what we’ve done for them. Recently I retired after being an EMT for 30 years, and even now, when people find out I was an EMT, they thank me for my service. So this ripple effect, or this aspect of it can continue even after retiring from the service, which gives me the satisfaction that I really helped to make a meaningful difference in my chosen profession. Great video as always!!! 😎👍👍👍
Wonderful video! To me, Firefighting is the PERFECT job for me because I tried really hard to get into IT and other things, however I just struggled there and I never had a passion for those. But for firefighting, I've had a MASSIVE passion and I really enjoy learning more about them. The 4 days on, 4 days off sounds really exhausting at first but I bet soon you will get used to it and it will be okay. I love how firefighting gives you so many days off, I would love to wake up whilst everyone is rushing to work and I have 3 days off in a row or something hahahah I will NEVER get bored of saving lives and I love that you get to know the family of the people you have rescued, I will never get tired of that Man, I really want to be a firefighter, I really wish I become one soon, vacancies are just very difficult, but once you're in. You're pretty much the happiest person haha
Great video! I would also add that for me personally I am no good at sitting still for sitting at a desk job. So in looking for a job that I would enjoy and get back to the community and all that I also looked for a job where I could work with my hands and move around
I have goals that I'm so close on, I'll be able to support myself off of work I've done that will let me "retire" but I don't want to look back on a life that I didn't give everything I possibly could to this world. So I'll be able to volunteer, and help keep pay and resources for you but be very grounded in the community. I have a couple buddies that I'm working on convincing them to go to the academy with me, we already work together and bring great energy. It would get them moved up in their lives.
I’m 27 in the military and this is a great video. I working artillery and it’s just not my passion. I want to stay fit while also bringing a service to people.
I initially wanted to become a police officer and I realized with just one day at the fire station that I loved the firefighter’s attitude more and way of life. Just hearing the stations alarm go off and hopping in the truck gave me a sense of excitement and purpose.
Just went through the first round of interviews with my dream department and felt pretty good about it and wanted to say thanks for all the videos and advice! The second round of interviews is next month and is a oral presentation. You can bring props but no technology like laptops or projectors. I was wondering if you had any advice on something like this? Thanks again for what you’re doing and all the info you’ve put out!

Ugh firefighters in the uk start on £23,000 and can make up to around £32,000, can't exactly call that high pay lol, in california they start on $74,000 🙄
Honestly, I'm only 18 and wasn't even born at the time, but hearing all those stories from firefighters on 9/11 was something that inspired and absolutely confirmed to me that this is the job I wanna do.
I work admin for my local FD. I have come to love and respect the service even more than I did before I got my current position. My goal is to become physically fit and qualified enough to become a firefighter within 2 years
I never knew being a firefighter SHOULD have been what I did for living, until I started working with firefighter unions providing benefits. Just the best cross-section of society
Hey man! I graduated college with a degree in Criminal Justice, but decided not to pursue a career in that field when the community and police relations seemed to take a nosedive. I’ve bounced around from job to job, gotten married, and not have a 1 month old son. My itch to be a first responder is still there, but I know it isn’t in Law Enforcement. You have inspired me to run after a career as a firefighter! I’m taking my civil service test this week. Wish me luck!
I want to follow in the footsteps of the men in my family, my dad, uncle, grandpa, and great grandpa were all firefighters or paramedics. I want to be the first woman in my family to follow in those footsteps.
I am a 20 year old that is considering fire fighting mainly because of the schedule. i really want to be able to also do my hobbies while also doing my job, that would be perfect and it wouldn't lead to burnout

i remember always wanting to be a firefighter i told my dad when i was 17 and he shot the idea down immediately said its a mans job you cant do that (22 now wish i started sooner but im getting back into it :)!
Ask a firefighter: what advice would you give a guy who has been around the fire service since he was 16, now 29. Haven’t been 100% active that whole time, 13 years of service, not experience. I understand there is a difference. But I have made the decision to pursue one of the few things that truly brings me joy as a profession. Thanks. Dylan
I just wanted to say to anyone that is interested in getting into the Fire service and is daunted by the process (myself a couple of months back), this man is an incredible asset. I was in the same boat knocked back on my first try lost and jaded but now I am proud to say I'm due to start the firefighter recruits course next week. This is without a doubt partly down to the detailed and comprehensive work that he does. Its also worth noting that I am from the UK not the US but the fundamentals of the information thats found on the chanel is in my experience universal. Take note leave your ego at the door and I promise it can be done!
Thanks brother! Congratulations to you for 1. putting in the work to get where you want to be, and 2. getting selected for the firefighter recruits course. Best of luck going forward and keep me posted on how it’s going!
Hows the pay? I want to be a ff 1000x over for millions of reasons, but I dont think I can sustain a life with that low of a pay which is really sad cause its my #1 choice.
Hey man. New subscriber here. Was brought to your channel by my interest in the fire academy and becoming a fireman as a potential new career choice. I just watched your video on the cons, and along with this video here of the pros, both provide a really great perspective. I appreciate the info and am looking forward to learning more from your channel.
In my area I have seen and known paid firefighters and EMT they go join a volunteer fire house also. I'm a retired volunteer firefighter of 30 + years and even tho I can no longer ride I'm active on the administration side. I wouldn't have it any other way. I've done things that I saw on emergency that I did myself. You name it I've done it. I'm extremely happy for the work I've done in my life with the fire department..
I don’t care about the money or anything Fire fighting is a great way of helping others and dealing with dangerous situations. Respect! (Future firefighter) :D
I'm am electrician's apprentice, and for the past year, I've found it to be rather meaningless. While I'm terrified to leave this stable job, I'm strongly considering becoming a firefighter. I've wanted to be a firefighter since I was a kid. Any thoughts?
I think you are in the same position many, many people have found themselves. That said, I would encourage you to find a way to transition into firefighting if you feel as though it would be more meaningful to you. If you can go to school on evenings/weekends, etc. It will be hard, but it can be done. In fact a guy on my crew was a union carpenter for several years before he became a firefighter/medic. It's tough, but you can certainly do it!
im a journeyman, i quit my job because of that same feeling, felt like i was making good money but i didn't feel to be on my lifes purpose, my stepdad is a firefighter, after talking with him it really makes me think that i would love this job..... ive passed my civil service test and my agility test is on the 5th of next month, i will be starting academy in september..... ill let you know how it goes especially after i graduate. hopefully that will help you with your situation. god speed.
I just recently found your account and I've watched quite a few of your videos, wanted to give some appreciation for them with this comment. I've been unsure of I want to do with my life and I'm thinking firefighting is it. So thank you for all the free information you give out.
I was in highschool almost 10 years ago, And in highschool I wanted to be a graphic designer in the clothing industry and was too young to know I had potential in exactly what I knew I wanted to earn a living doing. I was too young and dumb but also my parents never really supported me and really I did not even realize they were neglectful. so I did not get a chance to continue school until I realized my life was turning into my parents life that did not go to school and never talked about getting and education or a career. I did not know my parents did not mind struggling. So I gave God an opportunity to help me because I was not a believer. Started feeling completely different. Always happy even when I'm supposed to be down. And I am now going into a career that I am creating for myself in clothing , t shirts jeans, sweats, hoodies and what ever graphic design can offer me. From wedding invitations to video and photography but I still haven't gotten in to video Thank God he found me 🙏.
I realize what I haven’t had in my life is purpose, a regular job doesn’t do that for me that’s why the fire department is something I know that will give me a purpose. I like helping strangers and to risk my life for it gives me a purpose I start my first class tomorrow at 6. If it something I truly wanna build on And go for a paid career, I have to start out volunteering.
I’m 19 right now. Graduated from Navy bootcamp a month ago. When I get out in 6 years I will either be a cop or a firefighter. I’ve wanted to be in one of those careers ever since I was really young but I’m still struggling with which career to choose.
In the same damn boat as you buddy, I have my BA in CJ but I have a bunch of Fire certs and undoubtedly have more experience in the fire service than in law enforcement. I love both fields and honestly I am split between which profession to stick with permanently.
I'm 20 I've always loved firefighters and respected them, I finished school this year for Auto Technology which I also love doing but I feel I could be doing more. Which is why I've decided to return to school for a fire science program I want to be a help to people, save them and be an inspiration to people that feel like they can't do anything.....they actually can
Do you mind if I ask you a question? I'm in the Army and I absolutely hate the redundancy of it all. Wake up, go to PT, PT for 2.5 hours. Get an hour to myself for personal hygiene/eat. Go to work and mop, sweep, strip and wax floors, buff, sit around waiting to do real training that never comes, go home at 10pm. Get home to my already asleep wife - play with my dog for an hour; shave, pack, shower again, then go to sleep to wake up and start it all over again. I work 80+ hours a week and at least 14 hours on my "weekend" all whilst making 30k... I'm tired of the amount of work I put in for the little pay and lack of family time I receive. While in, I earned my degree in Criminal Justice and Policing. For as long as I could remember, I've wanted to be a cop. However, with everything going on in today's society with law enforcement, seeing the disconnect, etc; I've decided to move passed that. I was a volunteer firefighter back in New York before I joined the Army and I loved every single second of it. Hell, I spent more time there than I did at my actual job lol. Anyways, my wife is from Massachusetts, I'm from New York. We both decided to move to Massachusetts this upcoming summer in July once I get out of the Army. I've used Google and have called countless fire departments within Massachusetts, both civil service and non civil service. I keep getting differing answers. How do I start this process considering my resume has been groomed towards law enforcement? Do you even think I have a shot? I've been told to go get EMS, EMT, and EMR certified prior to applying. And then once I'm a firefighter, become Paramedic certified and use my GI Bill to get another degree in fire science for more knowledge and pay. Any truth behind any of this? Thanks for taking the time out of your day to respond and read (if you do) - I truly appreciate it, man!
Anyone who really loves their job is gonna say it's the best job in the world lol. But firefighting for me seems like it is. I love nature and I love having a purpose and helping people. The main reason is I want have an impact like you said. I think that's very important and why most people hate their jobs.
I did it for 27 years and retired. Yes it is a hard career 24 hours on duty 48 hours off. I had a business on the side a handyman business I made good money. It is stressful. You have to deal with all the shitheads out there, but remember people stupidity is our job security.
Good evening sir, I have a question regarding interview questions I was hoping you could answer. My Fire Academy is currently in our Jobs unit where we prepare for interviews and learn how to dress etc. The Battalion Chief running the unit has been adamant that we should almost NEVER ask questions after an interview because it may come off as negative, for example “what are some of the qualities and characteristics of your top performing employees?” A negative view on that could be that I should already know the top qualities of a Firefighter and should have touched on them in my resume. This is contradictory to everything I have been told in the past as asking questions shows interest and that you want to get familiar with the job. Any thoughts on this? Thanks!
I live in a small town in upstate New York (far away from New York City) our firemen make a lot of money. $100K for the chief, $85 for the lieutenants and like $75K for the rest. They fight one or two real fires a year. The rest of the year they polish the trucks and watch TV. 💸
I live in Columbus, Ohio...and I want that leadership and responsibility...that's bigger than me just like the military...I'm don being complacent and not serving the community that God intended... and also not no learning and growing with knowledge and skills.

I’ll be back once I achieve this great goal, But until next time everyone❤️
oh oky
Start my department's academy on Thursday! Still want it, now I'm gonna earn it.
Thank you for all of your insight and wisdom for the next generation of FFs, Mike!
Money benefits schedule team work..and its respectable ..and fulfilling
I'm 24, landed a really nice job right out of college but it's left me wanting so much more. I feel like my time in my prime would be better spent in the field instead of sitting at a desk.
What do you do?
I love how firefighting gives you so many days off, I would love to wake up whilst everyone is rushing to work and I have 3 days off in a row or something hahahah
I will NEVER get bored of saving lives and I love that you get to know the family of the people you have rescued, I will never get tired of that
Man, I really want to be a firefighter, I really wish I become one soon, vacancies are just very difficult, but once you're in. You're pretty much the happiest person haha
Great video! I would also add that for me personally I am no good at sitting still for sitting at a desk job. So in looking for a job that I would enjoy and get back to the community and all that I also looked for a job where I could work with my hands and move around
I'm 31, decided I need to try it now or I probably never will. Taking my test next Saturday.
Good luck! I'm rooting for you!
Good luck!
how did it go?
It’s next week and I’m feeling pretty ready! I’ll let you know how it goes after

Keep it up I appreciate u making these vids
And I just hear the stories abt firefighters and I really think abt how much of an honor it would be to put on that jacket
Love your videos, super informative and inspiring. Im 38 and just now decided to pivot and pursue fire fighting. Getting my CPR training this weekend and enrolled in my EMT course for the fall. Im fired up!
High pay
Retire early
Great benefits
99% of the time, not doing fire stuff
I have a question. Does it realy pay high ? And after you 24 hour shift. Can you just go home or how does that work ?
.
Ugh firefighters in the uk start on £23,000 and can make up to around £32,000, can't exactly call that high pay lol, in california they start on $74,000 🙄

Idk, I don't think that beats 24/72 that some people get here in NYC.
@@Gofr4 I wouldn’t want to do that
Do you get paid on your days off?
Honestly, I'm only 18 and wasn't even born at the time, but hearing all those stories from firefighters on 9/11 was something that inspired and absolutely confirmed to me that this is the job I wanna do.
Just turned in my application! I’ve been sleeping on this for years!! I hope it’s everything I want and then some.
I’m 7 and I love firefighters and I want to be a firefighter 🧑🚒 and I’m a boy
Do it
I’ve always wanted to help people, that’s why I want to be a fire fighter!
I work admin for my local FD. I have come to love and respect the service even more than I did before I got my current position. My goal is to become physically fit and qualified enough to become a firefighter within 2 years
I'm really considering becoming a firefighter. Thank you for this video and God bless ❣️
I am 28. Prior military and I start my journey as a firefighter in a few days!
Thank you for this extremely insightful video. I am a 20 year old college sophomore and am thinking about being a firefighter after I graduate.
I never knew being a firefighter SHOULD have been what I did for living, until I started working with firefighter unions providing benefits. Just the best cross-section of society
How do unions work are there only select departments that have them?
That’s awesome man! Good luck keep me posted!
How did it go?
Hope it went well brother
Little update!
I’m in my third year as a full time firefighter/Paramedic! Safe to say it was the best career decision I could have ever made.
@@HRMFireSquad Nice!!
I want to follow in the footsteps of the men in my family, my dad, uncle, grandpa, and great grandpa were all firefighters or paramedics. I want to be the first woman in my family to follow in those footsteps.
I’m already preparing at 13 years old
I am going to join the academy when I graduate high school I can’t wait🔥
Hate my job , but I’m glad I have one
Excellent video, people sometimes don’t understand the real purpose of this type of jobs.
Help others, is a much deeper meaning.
I am a 20 year old that is considering fire fighting mainly because of the schedule. i really want to be able to also do my hobbies while also doing my job, that would be perfect and it wouldn't lead to burnout
DCSC in Columbus Ohio is 24 on 24 off as of 15 years ago when I last worked in Columbus area.. Im retired from Ashley's department, Elm Valley Joint Fire...
enrolled in a firefighter and oaramedic program, i start in august!
We are volunteer and we are family we are not the greatest people but we will never leave a man behind
i remember always wanting to be a firefighter i told my dad when i was 17 and he shot the idea down immediately said its a mans job you cant do that (22 now wish i started sooner but im getting back into it :)!
I'm a United States Marine thinking about Firefighting. Any thoughts my friends? Because this seems exciting.
I'm in the Army rn having the same thought process
Thanks!
Thanks. Dylan
Should add that I’m on track to get my EMTB this fall.
Great video gonna look at getting into the fire service once I leave school, Anyways very informational thank you for sharing
Best of luck going forward and keep me posted on how it’s going!
being a ff is the greatest career choice I ever made

33yr old Teacher/Coach. Love what I do but want to give more and be a part of something bigger.
I don’t care about the money or anything
Fire fighting is a great way of helping others and dealing with dangerous situations. Respect!

Great video dude!
Becoming my fav channel on UA-cam, thank you for your time
Great video! Starting my academy in a week, your videos are super helpful getting into this field. Keep it up!
Amen, I’m doing the best job in the world!!!
Great video. Really considering taking fire seriously
I was in highschool almost 10 years ago,
And in highschool I wanted to be a graphic designer in the clothing industry and was too young to know I had potential in exactly what I knew I wanted to earn a living doing.
From wedding invitations to video and photography but I still haven't gotten in to video
Thank God he found me 🙏.
can you talk about all the requirements and the different types of firemen ?
We all out here w the same plan. Planning on enlisting in the navy then going firefighter route. Good luck!!
Go on ride alongs, ask your nearest department/station if they do department/station visits.
Go FF.
I'm 20 I've always loved firefighters and respected them, I finished school this year for Auto Technology which I also love doing but I feel I could be doing more. Which is why I've decided to return to school for a fire science program I want to be a help to people, save them and be an inspiration to people that feel like they can't do anything.....they actually can
great video, thank you
Nice!
I would love to see your smile more!
My career fire job is the most fulfilling career I've had, and I have done some pretty cool jobs.
Diggin the ending music.
Most days, I still cannot believe I get paid to do this job. We are blessed.
I am 24 and always wanted to be a firefighter I slacked off these past few years but I want to be something is it too late for me to get started
Great Channel Dude
Oh yeah, new upload baby!
Hey. Did you have those shirts printed for you? I wanna say they printed the flag on your arm backwards.
What town??
I live in Columbus, Ohio...and I want that leadership and responsibility...that's bigger than me just like the military...I'm don being complacent and not serving the community that God intended... and also not no learning and growing with knowledge and skills.
