There isn't a blanket statement of what will keep you in or out. We follow the NFPA 1582 firefighter standard, check that out for more info. We provide every recruit a health screening as part of their onboarding with a yearly checkup.
Don’t ever lower the standard. Combat military units train like the 82nd train like hell. These people are meant to pull bodies out the basement, up stairs. So they need to pull their own weight otherwise the department is at fault for getting a firefighter killed who never should of put the uniform on.

It is not too late as long as you feel you are still physically capable. Don't let your age discourage you. Get physically fit, mentally prepared, and make sure your family is supportive of your decision. Best of luck!
You should. A lot of servicemen and women make that transition, plus with us you can receive preference points on the written exam that puts you ahead of others.
FDNY used to have a pretty hard academy. I went through 16 years ago. It was 6 months long. It’s nothing like that anymore. Much more watered down to accommodate the so called protected categories of employee . I assume many cities which are run by democrats have similar situations. Chicago, DC, Baltimore.
Every academy will be different as far as the daily physical fitness. You need to enter the academy already having great cardiovascular strength as well as physical strength. The academy I went to had us do 50 pushups, 50 sit-ups, 50 burpees, 50 20lb sledge hammer swings against a tire, dummy drags, and a timed 2 mile run every morning. Academies may have easier or more difficult expectations as far as fitness.

I am working as a dispatcher in saudi arabia and trained as a fire fighter in nepal. I want to do NFPA fire fighter kevel 1& 2. Could you please guide me to the academy?
Every department may be a little different. Some require you to get your fire and medical certs prior to applying. We don't require any certs to be hired. We're looking for good people and we'll provide all your training.
i think about being a fire fighter and if i was going to be one i would attend the academy in like 2 years, and ngl im pretty weak and skinny. how should i prepare for that in the time i have?
The biggest thing to overcome is the mindset that you can't do something. Start working on your fitness and strength building now, create that lifestyle. You don't have to be a bodybuilder in this line of work, but you do need to be able to sustain a workload over a period of time. Some strength is essential and required. You'll get there!
@UnifiedFireUtah Thank you so much for the tips! I definitely need to start working on strength for my health anyway, and it's great to know you don't have to be insanely strong in that line of work. Thank you!

Kumusta! To be eligible for employment here with us you basically have to be able to work legally in the US. This can be done through the E-Verify program. Search that up for details. Good luck!
While each department will vary on what they require, ours is a high school diploma, drivers license, and pass a background check. We help you with the rest.
We do much much more than just medical calls, though they do consume the majority of our response. Hazmat incidents, motor vehicle accidents, entrapments and extrications, school visits, station tours, community events, etc.
Im 15 years old and hope to be hired at my local fire department someday but I have asthma. Are three any firefighters here who could tell me if I can still get hired?
If anyone one thinks fire academy is intense, try border patrol. The first few you're in Artesia, there's something called EOD (entry on duty) and basically what it is is they yell their asses off at you while you're getting processed.
Getting started varies from department to department. Some require you to get all your fire or EMS certs, some don't even do EMS. We require neither to be hired and then we help you get everything you need once on board. I recommend reaching out to your local department and finding out how your area works. They can get you started in the right direction.
Is it best to get my EMT first before starting fire academy? I will be starting Fire Academy through Santa Rosa Junior College in california and am unsure on the whole process to start.
I can't speak for all departments and what they require. We encourage having your EMT first but it doesn't restrict you from being hired with us. Go to your local station and just talk to the crew, they're likely very welcoming and will provide you what you're looking for.
Is it possible for foreigners who register at the US fire department academy and become US firefighters by changing the status of residents to US residents after being sworn in?
I checked the salary and without knowing the region it seems a little low. However, it probably scales up quickly. I think it goes without saying there are much easier ways to make $60k.
It absolutely can and does. You're looking at the wrong fire departments. You don't have to live in the Bay or in NYC to make 6 figures, there's lots of affordable places to live that have fire departments paying $60,000+ as a starting salary (which goes up very quickly by tens of thousands). I live in probably one of the shittiest states to be a firefighter in and the department right next to me pays $60,000 if you already have your certifications).
this isnt my dream im going to be honest right now, what my real dream is, is to fight in mma or kickboxing or muay thai and go pro but something about being a firefighter calls to me the same way fighting does i am 120 lbs i am 5'4" i am slightly athletic i want to do this but i dont know if i am physically capable of saving anyone but i really want to die trying to protect people from losing their meaningful lives in fires :/
No way some of these cadets passed the CPAT. Must not have required… they should require it. Basic level of fitness to pass it, would have cut 1/3 of those recruits that shouldn’t have been there.
Do you guys believe in mental abuse, bullying & harassment to train your department? Yelling & cussing & bullying should be illegal in the fire academies. Paramilitary is ridiculous & nonsense. Train them the right way not abuse them & make them into emotionless robots.
Hello @Champe92, thanks for watching and reaching out. We appreciate your inquiry into our methods and tactics of training our new recruits. Curious as to what part of the video you felt was cussing, yelling, bullying, and abusing as none of those methods are used or displayed here. In fact, if you listen to the instructor cadre share their thoughts throughout the video, all you see and hear is encouragement, teaching, and mental fortitude being advocated. There is a demand for alertness, respect, attention to detail, effort, and situational awareness, as these characteristics are the skills that will keep us alive in a dangerous incident or situation. Hope this helps clarify your concern, please know we wholeheartedly agree there is no place for tearing down or mentally abusing new recruits. Not a path we pursue, but rather we build individuals with strong character and help them see and find their own potential that many times they didn't know they even had. Take care.
@@UnifiedFireUtah Quit using fear to further the cause. Less than 5% of fire depth calls are even fires. Better building codes and building practices have dramatically reduced the number of actual fire calls. This is why many fire dept have resorted to attending Ambulance calls in order to maintain calls numbers for job security. There is so much that the taxpaying public aren't told about fire depts.
Fewer fire calls yet we keep building fancier bigger fire stations bigger more expensive fire trucks with more and more staff? Some for communities to start taking a much closer look at their fire depts and their budgets.

More than likely yes. Most departments will put you through their own academy, regardless of your previous training/experience.
I want to do this but I’m not very smart
Smart is a relative term. Apply yourself and work hard. You can make it happen.
Hi. quick question how do you apply as fire fighter as a foreigner?
You just have to demonstrate legal ability to work in the US.
Being sworn in would not make you a US resident. You need to attain legal working status prior to applying with us.
I would do this if the job paid enough to actually live comfortably.
I checked the salary and without knowing the region it seems a little low. However, it probably scales up quickly. I think it goes without saying there are much easier ways to make $60k.
You write your own check.
@@BootyGoblinesque Goes up tens of thousands? Wheres that?😂
$77k starting salary by me
I would like to be a firefighter, can I do it if my liscence has been suspended before?(not a dui)
It is possible I would guess. Reach out to the HR department of where you would like to get started and see what they say.
Really? You puts ads on🤔
Is there any height requirement to apply?
Negative. Open to anyone that can do the work.
its similar to navy seals training
How? Lol
While we appreciate the sentiment we gotta be honest, definitely not that intense. But thanks!
A high school level job nothing more.
Spraying water on a fire takes a lot of brains🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪
this isnt my dream im going to be honest right now, what my real dream is, is to fight in mma or kickboxing or muay thai and go pro but something about being a firefighter calls to me the same way fighting does i am 120 lbs i am 5'4" i am slightly athletic i want to do this but i dont know if i am physically capable of saving anyone but i really want to die trying to protect people from losing their meaningful lives in fires :/
Find someone that knows basic math that will help you.Good Luck
No way some of these cadets passed the CPAT. Must not have required… they should require it. Basic level of fitness to pass it, would have cut 1/3 of those recruits that shouldn’t have been there.
Big talk over the internet brother. I’m sure you’re super badass 🙄
The cpat is slowing being removed as a requirement unfortunately

Episode 2 is now live!!! ua-cam.com/video/XEm2Noq2aWg/v-deo.html
Take care.
Go to your safe space you will always be a failure in life
Sleep 🛌 watch TV 📺 COOK WASH TRUCK 🛻
False. Lots of response in a city, where our first due is.
Mustaches and watches in the academy very weird….. especially since not everyone has a watch
I laugh at how they’ve glorified such an idiot job and now they’re trying to act like police officers😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Until you're the one with an emergency. Trapped in a wrecked car. Child drowns. Cardiac arrest. Stroke. House on fire. All idiot job stuff.
@@UnifiedFireUtah How many times have you actually truly saved a child drowning or a stroke Patient? I mean actually truly saved them not just shown up at the scene? Let's be honest !
@@UnifiedFireUtah What exactly can a firefighter do for say a stroke patient? Not really much!
I hated hose week! lol...
It’s universally disliked for sure.
@@UnifiedFireUtahI know I’m late but it’s been a dream of mine to become a firefighter I can do almost everything that it would require mentally physically my only weakness is I can’t do a push up to save my life I can do a whole lot of other things just didn’t do push up’s when I was younger so I’m not very good at them any tips or words of wisdom
@@Thatkidclapper14 It's not always what you can and can't do, but rather the effort to make it happen. Keep working on it, you will surprise yourself.
I’m a 280 lesbian with anger issues if I apply for job I’m sure they’ll make me captain in a year.I love social promotions lol
I don’t think that’s how it works
Tonight I’m joining my local volunteer department. I’m so excited for every challenge that’s coming.
