December 18, 2022. The Patriots, tied, attempted a desperation lateral play, and for the 3rd time since 2000, it results in a touchdown... for their opponents, the raiders, who score the only walk off interception TD off a lateral since 2000, and probably the only in NFL history.
I just watched the clip:if the score was tied, why didn't the Patriots gamble that hard with the ball?

This is what makes sport compelling. Because it is REAL. No one would write this.
No one would write a story in which there is a crazy lateral touchdown (with a questionable lateral in the middle) only to have the nicest man in the world miss the extra point. There's no metaphor there, there's no payoff, Something unlikely happened and it meant nothing.

John Carney had a house in my hometown and helped our high school kicker out with everything that Bergeron talked about. I was probably 10 at the time and he let me catch the punts and field goals. Nicest guy I've ever met.

I've seen this play countless times in countless different ways and I know exactly what's going to happen, but every time (keeping in mind that I'm not even a Saints fan), I feel an internal pain. Just the chances of this happening and the unfortunateness of the situation is almost unbearable.

I am not a football fan. I barely understand it at all. The announcer's anguish gave me goosebumps and made my stomach drop. I never knew anything about this story. What a perfect piece of art, tarnished by that final moment. Or perhaps improved by it. *shudder*

Man, even as a Falcons fan, while I usually want the Saints to get trampled in any game they play, can't help but feel sorry for them. Especially Carney. I'll never cheer for the team (unless it's necessary for the Falcons), but I'll like the occasional player. John Carney was that player. Shame that it had to be him.

I just watched this for about the 10th time. There's something about how Jon did his edit at 4:40 that keeps bringing me back. The art filter over the grainy game footage, the use of the song "Zero Gravity" - (Richard Philip Birdsall), and the way he does most of the video in google earth, just blows my mind.
I want to make videos that mean something to people, the way that Jon does.

Oh man, I can never forget this game. I think this was the first year my family had NFL Sunday Ticket and we switched over to this game live. I didn't have any rooting interest so I just watched it unfold. When Carney missed the extra point, I just looked over to my Dad and we both cracked up.
Whenever I think a team I'm rooting can't possibly win or lose, I always, always think back to this little, but massive game.

everything post-reveal is AMAZING. the repeats. the sudden color inversion to reflect the tone shift. the fact that each subsequent NOOO is played slower and more drawn out, like it's a cheesy moment in a movie or something. like it's bigger than it was. and then the background music that invokes the horror, the dread, the shock of this moment. i laughed out loud at the newspaper headlines, the "SAINTS DREAMS GO WIDE RIGHT". shown while the NOOOO is at its most dramatic, it feels like it's too soon, even though the article was published days afterwards. and then the reversal of the footage showing the successful lateral, because this one fuckup had undone all their previous victories. god.
11:00 This slowed down version of the “NOOO” sounds like his soul is being slowly sucked out of his body as his skin melts off, muscles and bodily organs fall off, and skull and bones fall apart.
I looked it up; Carney had a 99.26% chance to make that extra point. I guess his favorite number is 00.74. Poor guy. #Pray4Carney
For those of you wondering, the song starting at 4:40 is called "Zero Gravity" by Richard Philip Birdsall. Jon loves using it in his videos and it makes sense why, just has that almost mystical sound about it

In your last calculation you used the overall percentage of missed extra points. You should have used the percentage for this particular kicker just to drive the nail a little deeper.
For the statistics in the video, this would've actually produced a more probably outcome, 3/271 > 1/100, but narratively speaking, absolutely.

It's a lot of fun to return to this one after watching the Falcons doc, now having a glancing knowledge of the Saints' history. I think this is probably Jon's best short video.
The breakdown of the players to make the Relay possible of who they were and what they did before the The Relay was even a thought.
And you presented them like art pieces and gave them the necessary attention that human beings made that possible.

Jon, I'm from Spain. I absolutely love American sports, but of course I don't know all the stories. I probably know less than the average fan. So don't assume everybody knows the story beforehand. Thank you for making these videos, I wish you could make one every week or so. Honestly, I love them so much so I pause it every 3 or 4 minutes, because I don't want them to end, haha. Thanks again, and congratulations for the good job.
I know this reply is a year late, but oh well. I think Jon doesn't mean that his audience should *actually* know the exact details of the story, but that based on how the story was leading up to the final moment, it seemed so obvious that the extra point was going to get botched. Or else there wouldn't be any tragedy to the story entitled "No". 😉

Great responses already above, but I wanted to add that, not knowing the ending beforehand, makes watching this all the more real, or rather SURreal.
A bit of me wishes that I hadn't known the outcome before hand as well. That's a gift not very man has.
We are few fans overseas, in my case I know the story because I'm a Saints fan (I lived a few years in NO)
The funny thing is I had absolutely no idea how this ended, but when that NOOOOO kicked in, I cracked up. These are always fascinating and great!
This is tremendously well done, Jon. This is to me - perhaps the funniest (unintentionally, anyway) broadcaster call of the recent era outside of the 1994 TX high school game where Plano East comes back from down 24 pts with 3:03 to go ahead 44-41 ... only to lose on the ensuing kickoff which was run back for a TD with the broadcaster saying, "NO NOoooo, I don't believe it. God bless those kids ... I'm sick, I want to throw up."
This is honestly kind of scary how it’s edited like a horror movie. It gives me chills, but adds so much more emotion to the losses of the clips.
The way he set it up you KNEW the most ridiculously awful thing was going to happen to give everybody a heart attack. Rename the NO team the Martyrs. Nice work. Sometime do one on Wayne Walker, kicker for the Detroit Lions, and a wicked kicking slump he had back in the '60s. He passed at age 80 in 2017. At the time he was asked how he was and answered, "I can't kick!".
As a Saints fan this is still painful to watch.

As much as I love the "you have to go to work or school the next day", and how much I can relate to that sunday evening feeling, the funny part is that the game was on December 23rd, so no one was going to school, and a chunk of people weren't going to work.....with that said, I don't really care. :)
Looking back at all of the struggles and failures the Saints have had, it makes their Super Bowl victory more special, and that whole season seem like destiny was on their side.

I don't know if that NFC Championship game was fixed Vikings' fan, but there was an absurd amount of bias in the Saint's favor in the OT. There seemed to be no bias in the 3rd and 4th quarters, and the Vikes were in a position to win the game with a FG, when Favre threw the pick.
IF the refs were fixing it, why wouldn't they have shown some bias in the 3rd or 4th quarter to help the Saints (other than letting some defenders get away with a late hit on Favre) ensure a win, and or to make sure the Vikes wouldn't come within a FG of winning it ?

Phillip Rivers is also the only NFL quarterback to fumble a QB Kneel. He's overall pretty good, but he's made some real facepalm blunders.

Yesterday I watched this video for fun. I laughed at the misfortune of the Saints. Laughed at the grief. Thought how silly it was that it would end in such a horrific way.
Now I sit here, wrapped in my Commanders sherpa, in reverence and understanding, knowing everything exactly goes according to plan.

I remember watching this live when it happened, but I totally forgot how incredible the lateral play were. The kick completely overshadowed it. If mentioned I would have only said it was a last second miracle TD that the kicker blew in the end.

An important note to people who didn't grow up with American football: lateraling is a tried and true scrub-tier technique which you should absolutely use against your friends in pick-up games; the kind without a ref, sideline cameras, or a competent defensive line that will swat that shit like it's trying to sting them.
