4 years AFTER this video was published, at the age of 48, Koo Dae-Sung pitched 1 scoreless inning for Geelong-Korea of the Australian Baseball League
He did it again at 53, his final appearance
No way
@@chrisandwillhobbies My god, this man should be immortalized by any mean by that point...
let's go dude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Breh lmaoo.
The man was obviously a hustler.
He told people he'd never played poker in order to destroy them, and he deliberately avoided hitting for years. He even threw in the awful at bat against the Reds to lull people to sleep.
All about the long con.
@MANCHESTER UNITED So?
MANCHESTER UNITED who gives a shit? This is a baseball video. If it was a soccer video and I came to post about baseball what would you say?
@MANCHESTER UNITED Soccer sucks tho
MANCHESTER UNITED because poor people can play it. That game is like the only sport we are bad at because most American kids play sports that are more enjoyable to play rather than kicking a ball around for 90 minutes. There’s a reason y’all suck at baseball but we only sort of suck at soccer.
@@johnedwardsficklecock3319 "sort of suck at soccer" No offense dude, but the American football teams are a joke, last world cup they failed to qualify, while panama made it in.
Koo was a left-hander because he injured his right. Originally born right handed he completely changed his dominant hand just to play baseball... the guy just loves baseball.
So Goro Shigeno from Major is loosely based on him? That's amazing.
Matthew Laird this man is just a badass
Matthew Laird Billy Wagner had a very similar route. Had to change throwing hands!
Matthew Laird
similarly, hyun-jin ryu, a natural righty, is a lefty pitcher because his first ever glove as a little kid was a lefty glove
Not a pitcher, but Randy "Macho Man" Savage (yes, that Macho Man, from the WWE) had a brief minor league stint as a catcher with the Cardinals organization, and he made the transition from righty to lefty after injuring his right shoulder in a collision at the plate.
That Randy Johnson segment made him look like a total badass
The Jack dude Randy Johnson was/is a total badass haha
Randy Johnson doesn't need any help with that 😂😂
A total badass who got finessed by a 35-year-old pitcher in a starter jacket twice.
Anyone can have an off day in a 21-year career.
He was a total badass.
At 6:50 when David Wright turns into the dugout, he's laughing and pointing towards Mike Piazza. Just prior to Koo's at-bat, Piazza said "If [Koo] gets a hit, I'll donate a million dollars to charity."
Well... Did he?
@@Kimchii_kk I've never seen it confirmed either way.
Wright sounds like a damn bird the entire video. It's poetic really

Oh yeah, he popped up again when he got ejected, right?
I live in Australia and didn't even know we had our own league
abcabc He's 47 now. How is he still playing lol.
Fu Tang baseball is the most laid back sport ever. he could definately be a backup pitcher and getting winded would almost never happen
He's a relief pitcher. If he's only pitching 1 or 2 innings here and there every season, he could pitch a long time as long as he stays healthy.
It's the same reason knuckleball pitchers last so long in the Majors.... the knuckleball is a less taxing pitch on the arm.

It's impossible not to smile when Mariah Carey's Fantasy starts playing in this video. I dare you not to smile.
This video is so great because it's about something so insignificant in the world of baseball. It may not have been the most exciting thing to happen in New York sports that day, but he still makes it into magic.
billny33 it IS impossible
I tried. It’s like trying to keep your eyes open when you sneeze. Involuntary response.
It was Pretty Good.
The editing on this was genius. *Crack* and then seeing the outfielder drifting toward the wall while jamming out to Mariah Carey. I couldn't help myself, I just burst out laughing and kept going for a few minutes. It was simply beautiful.
I think this is the best video on UA-cam and I don't even like baseball.
I don't know who had a more hilarious reveal.. Randy Johnson or Joe Heisman lmao
Terry Wallace Joe is now 100 years old hopefully he can get an out here
Dat Heisman's Death Stare.
*John Heisman
Combine the two and get Randy Heisman
randy johnson was introduced as an extremely good baseball player. john heisman was introduced as the god of football
8:46 That legend is true. Koo regretted that slide later and said, "I was crazy."
please bring this series back. The part where Mariah Carey's voice sync's with his hit will be with me the rest of my life. When I have a bad day, I'm coming back to this video.
It never left. It just became dorktown
HEY GUESS WHAT
@@teeks8713 is it back?!
Jon, you are seriously one of my favorite contemporary writers, and PRETTY GOOD is a perfect example of why. It might make me sound crazy but I don't care: when I'm feeling really down and I need something that'll make me shed tears of joy, I watch this video. Because it reminds me that it's all worth it.
If you're watching this video, if you're reading this comment right now, and you feel like sometimes life is an endless drag and there isn't a point just remember this story. Remember that sometimes the little guy doesn't just win, he absolutely blows everyone's expectations out of the water. Sports stories are human stories at the end of the day. and a lot of the time that means they're predictable. The Pats go to the super bowl, the Yankees go to the World Series.
But sometimes they're unexpected and wonderful. Sometimes a 35 yr old Korean relief pitcher gets to make Randy Johnson look like a complete asshat. Whether you think that's dumb luck, a hustle years in the making, or divine providence, who cares? It's pretty good.
Thanks for that buddy, I needed it :') Hope you're doing well wherever you are, and that you still think it's all worth it
"Sometimes life is cool"
At 5:03, the moment I saw who the pitcher was, I pissed myself a little. The one man in History that you don't EVER want to throw a ball in your direction.
Michael Lyden gross my guy
There has been more than 1 guy I don't want throwing my direction. Aroldis Chapman, Bob Feller, Nolan Ryan etc. The Big Unit is on the list though.
@@kvltizt I would pick literally everyone on your list to get thrown at before I had to be thrown at by Randy Johnson. Others may throw faster, but Johnson's level of 'don't care what happens to you if you're downrange' is much higher than the rest of them.
Same. Legend has it, one rookie stepped up to the plate, saw Randy on the mound, and all of the color rushed from their face. Randy just smiled and started his windup.
Little did Jon know that exactly one year after this video came out, Bartolo Colon would hit his first career home run.
Didn't he also hit a cycle in that game?
@@Jivvi Lol
The wind kept that ball in…oh man, the weather robbed us of an ultimate moment, a pitcher hitting a homer
The fact that he scored from 2nd on a *bunt* of all things makes it way more impressive
It's not super common, but plenty of pitchers have hit home runs: Madison Bumgarner, Dontrelle Willis, Bartolo Colon had an iconic one, it happens.
It blessed us with an even better moment in return
@@nathanchildress5596I think it's more impressive that on his first ever swing in a professional game, he almost hit a home run off of one of the greatest pitchers of all time is what makes it the ultimate pitcher hitting moment. If it was a home run, probably the greatest pitcher hitting a home run moment of all time
@@queenautumnween2796 It's an awesome moment, no doubt about it, but I dunno about 'greatest'. Bartolo Colon was a famously bad hitting pitcher, to the point he would wear an extra big helmet because he knew the crowd loved it when he swung and missed so bad it would fall off. So when he went deep against the Padres when he was in his 40s the whole league went nuts. Also there's the multiple Madison Bumgarner grand slams, an insanely rare feat for a pitcher in baseball.
@6:52 his dugout teammates are SO proud of him and I love it so much
Every time he takes the plate, Koo just looks so cool and nonchalant. Even against Randy Johnson he wasn’t fazed at all. Legend stuff
"If you had one shot to seize everything you ever wanted, would you capture it or just let it slip?"
-Marshall Mathers, 2002
That quote represents Koo Dae-Sung's day of victory to me.
I remember working in Korea in 2005 when this made the highlight reel on prime time national news. This man was a legend in Korea long before he crossed the pond at age 35. To anyone who's never had to hit a baseball professionally, I dare you to face Randy Johnson 60'6" away, just make eye contact and not pee in your pants.
When the stats on Randy Johnson start coming up, I say, out loud, having never seen this video before, "KILLED A BIRD." I 'm ready for the disappointment of it not coming up. It's just a video on the internet. One shouldn't really have such unrealistic exp-OMG there it is! Thank you, Jon Bois.
...and that is why I vehemently oppose the designated hitter.
alternate timeline where Koo Dae-Sung accidentally becomes the greatest hitter in MLB history.
@@SimuLord yeah that's probably the closest thing in sports history. a below average MLB hitter was made into a pitcher just because a couple people said he was good at it during the war, and now he's in the goddamn hall of fame.
Still one of my favorite videos ever. The whole Randy Johnson segment was perfect, great for anyone that knows who he is and great for anyone that doesn’t know who he is. The music and everything was great. It would seem tough to follow that up but you top it like always Jon.
I love everyone’s legitimately excited reactions. They are all so happy for the guy
The use of Mariah Careys's "Fantasy" is so perfect and puts a huge smile on my face every time I watch this video. Thank you, Jon.

McCarver is not retired! He's still saying wrong stuff on a semi-regular basis on Cardinals TV broadcasts. It's pretty annoying!
And still annoyed at Deion Sanders for playing two sports.
Ya know, I loved McCarver as a player in the ‘60’s & ‘70’s; as a broadcaster, not so much. He just loves the sound of his own voice, thinks he’s the smartest guy at the game. As Howard Cosell said of Oscar Madison in a classic episode of the Odd Couple, he’s an inane drone.
Oh god, not the House of Buck, oh wait, stay at the House of Buck, bad commentary makes everyone else's look better
That Randy Johnson intro is probably one of the best pieces of video editing I've seen
Not going to lie, I smiled when he hit the ball around 7:00.
If you know Hyun Jin Ryu, current Toronto Blue Jays pitcher and former LA Dodgers pitcher, you know his change-up. The person to teach him change-up is Dae-Sung Koo.

I forgot how pretty good this story was. Jon should remake this as a 25 minute director's cut.
Koo played in the Australian ball until last year, well into his 50s. He now manages a team of former KBO leaguers and Korean MiLB players in Australian league. That guy just lives baseball.

You have moments like this and Colon's HR that will never happen again unless you have an Ohtani-level talent out there.
As with every most recent Jon Bois video I've watched, this is the greatest thing I've ever seen.
The best part about this video is the reaction of David Wright, who is reacting the same way I imagine a 12 year kid would react if you told him that the school year was cancelled for Summer Vacation 2: Electric Boogaloo
Rumor has it that Mariah Carey's record label saw this video and was about to flag it for using their copywrited song until Mariah herself stopped them and said wait a minute, I like this. Leave it up, it's pretty good.
This is still my favorite Jon Bois video. I watch it whenever I need to cheer up.
Still true.
the fact that he shows a video making fun of bartolo colon swinging and posts the video exactly one year before Bartolo hit his homerun is scary
I love how happy his team is for him when he gets on base. You can tell that Dae-Sung had been talking about and practicing batting ever since his last appearance, just waiting for the chance to get on base next chance he had, and his whole team was there with him, showing all the excitement that Dae-Sung was trying to hide so he looked like a professional.
This is awesome and i love the whole series. One thing that pointed out to me is the specialzation bit and that how it is so true in almost every sport but soccer, where players are progressively more demanded to be more versatile at every position: footplay on goalkeepers, more and more precise pass game, position switches/reliefs, etc
All of the Pretty Good episodes are fun to watch, but this is the one I love sharing with friends to introduce them to the series.
Whenever I'm having a bad day I come back and watch this video. Fugging magical

Koo's at-bat as a poker hand:
Koo on the Big Blind, his money is already on the table (hitting as a pitcher).
Koo checks pre-flop, suggesting a weak hand (sleeps through his first ever plate appearance)
Randy raises on the flop, sure that Kim will lay down his hand (A meatball on the "The biggest give-up at-bat")
Koo calls (off the wall double)
Randy checks the turn, ready to see the next card (the next batter)
Koo also checks the turn, showing caution (modest but tasteful lead off second)
Randy checks the river, sure that he's ahead while hoping Koo will be reckless (pitching into a bunt with a guy on second wearing a jacket)
KOO SHOVES (Tags second and scoots)
Randy calls, shows a full house, and leans over the table to collect the pot (no need to cover home)
Koo shows four aces (and four bases).
The sound that David Wright made after that double is almost as glorious as the double itself.
Almost at 1,000,000 Jon. Miss ya buddy.
That intro for randy really had me thinking Koo would just dissolve into baseball-scented dust before the ball was even over the plate.
In the words of the famous -sports- commentator Griffin McElroy: "Holy shit, big unit!"
