As a kid, I found "The Nightly" cassette in a bargain bin for 99¢ at a Strawberries Records and Tapes. I'd no idea what to expect, but for some reason I decided to plunk down that $1.05 (6% sales tax).
To this day, it remains one of my greatest accidental discoveries.

Such a hilarious song in its way. "Let's pretend that it's the real thing". The whole song is a spin on a guy makin' time with a chick in the bomb shelter his Dad built. The whole album draws strongly on his youth in the '50's and '60's and he weaves those themes all through. This song is a "50's song, when there was real fear for the first time of nuclear war that manifested in people actually building bomb shelters. So, it's real deal. And it wouldn't surprise me if this was some true story from his youth. Also wouldn't surprise me if she had said yes if it were true!
Great album. "The Goodbye Look" is another time-genre song. The song is about an American couple on Holiday in Cuba when the revolution in '59 put Fidel Castro in power. But the song is so "camp". "Won't you pour me a Cuban Breeze, Gretchen" the guy sez, tryin' to stay calm.
    Keep on keepin' on!
    Blessings.

Its plain and obvious to the long time listener that Don did the heavy lifting when composing SD's songs. No slight against Walter Becker(RIP). Years from now DF will be recognized and held in the same regard as M. Davis, J. Bach, D. Ellington, etc.

True story, the Nightfly was the very first CD I ever purchased, and it was at the Wherehouse record store in Pasadena. Being already a huge Steely Dan fan it was an easy purchase. Still, this album with its unique collection of songs that brings you joy with touches of old school big band Jazz influences with a touch of rock. The musical layering is flawless with Larry Carlton's subtle but expressive guitar, as always. A masterpiece. Thanks Chod! Keep it going on this album. Every song is a must listen.

I.G.Y. is significant because of 1957, my birth year, but 'New Frontier' harks back to the 'Reds under the Bed' times or Cold War between the US and Russia. Check out a few more songs by Donald Fagan, True Companion, Mona, The Dunes and Snowbound. They all have that Steely Dan sound cause Donald was a part of Steely Dan. You will not be disappointed!✌

This is one tasty piece of music. Brubeck indeed, I like this, too.

Not many get this song, album. I was born in 70 but understood the cold war hysteria. Bomb shelters and everything. Fagen paints such a cool picture with this song.

I've always loved this song and always go back to it, Hearing it with the music video on MTV way back when it came out was amazing! A top 5 song/video combo in my opinion, we seem to have similar taste and you should check it out when you have time.

This song reminds me - where are the flying cars we were promised back in the day?? The Nightfly brought us sonically back to the late fifties, hep cats, cool jazz and optimism for the future, The album wistfully and sardonically comments on this. A great album.

1982. Sound like it? To me it's still one of the greatest songs ever. It's bouncy and fun. Talks history of the 50s and 60s (reds decide to push the button down is a reference to the cold war era - new frontier is a prez JFK thing, etc). Never mind all that. It's pure fun.

You may like some of Walter Becker's solo work, too. His is a little more rock and roll, in my opinion ;-)

The theme of JFK's Inauguration address in Jan. 1961 was The New Frontier. He was the youngest US president ever. There was a sense of optimism for the future and America's leadership in the world. I was 8 yo but I remember.

Steely Dan was first, then Donald Fagen put out solo albums.
Can you put me out of my misery and react to Aja? (Great drum solo in there!)

You have to see the original music video. Very cool. A sort of early 80s neon prism of the 50s. A little weird and awesome!
