Lil tip that I don’t see anyone talking about: I figured out if you have a UAD interface, you can use the console app, turn up your vocal monitor fader to 0 so the client hears themselves in real time, mute the record track on ProTools and you don’t have to play with the buffer size.
I love your channel, Andrew. You’re in my top 5 (maybe top 3) recording/mixing/mastering UA-cam channels. It’s you, Graham, Colt, Joe, and Warren. Keep rocking, brother. Thanks for providing such valuable content.
One thing I like to do slightly different is on the playlist duplicate. I name the track something like “Lead Vocal” then the first thing I do is duplicate the track. Pro Tools will automatically add a “.01” to the track name. This is when I start recording, making the .01 take 1 .02 is take 2 etc. Then at the end, when I’m ready to comp, I go back to the original playlist that doesn’t have a number and that becomes my comp track. Pretty close to what he says to do, just a few less steps
Great video and tips. One thing was on you were a little off on the hardware buffer setting. Lowering the hardware buffer means the processor has to work “much harder” to keep up with the demand and has little room to buffer the processing. You can think of it like a assembly line where someone puts a widget on your table then you box it. With small buffer its one person handing one widget at a time to your table and you boxing it. If one worker lags or you lag the process is messed up. A large buffer you can have more widgets loading on one table while you box them. This is the basic function of all computers (memory, cpu slices, etc). That is why plugs kill the comp on low buffer settings. Also another tip is if you are looking for a low latency as possible, record at a higher sample rate. I record at 96 and I can run my buffer down to 32.
Great tutorial and I will be paying attention. I've had 5 years experience with 10 and fifteen years working in and around Pro Tools studios. Soon will be moving up to latest version but I've not yet run out of things to learn and perfect as it is. You make things clear. Thank you - WA state
Background music and narration mix is fine Andrew...amazing how some people view someone else's hard work for free and then criticize. some even go through the hassle of creating a UA-cam account just to post a hateful response....unbelievable. Your videos are well done and very much appreciated my friend.
Because the truth is Avid (Protools) is a money pit. It has this"industry standard" banner about it, but the truth is, Avid just wants your money - and it never ends. What do you get in return? Chronic compatibility issues, subscription issues, hardware connectivity issues. If that's the studio you want to offer your clients, knock yourself out.
I've seen several PT videos mention R and T for zooming. Personally, I find Option + Mouse Wheel more intuitive and easier (also Shift + Mouse Wheel to scroll left and right). Option + A is the gold nugget that I found in this video.
the buffer is actually the amount of space each sample holds in ram before it is dumped to the disk, i.e. 1024mb is one gigabyte. so, the smaller the buffer the faster it dumps from the ram and the larger the buffer the more time it has to not make mistakes but also meaning the longer it takes to dump from the ram the higher the latency is. it's a measure of size in megabytes not cpu allocation
Great idea with the “recording track” vs final vocal track. Even with playlists things can get crazy quickly. I usually create a playlist dedicated for final but a whole track might even be easier.
numeric pad. Dot number enter. with Windows config is what you want. So do . 1 Enter and you get the options to save your track heights as well as recall a windows config. One thing to note. If you have set up markers and then setup marker memory locations you will have to renumber the previous markers to clear out the keypad numbers. There is a specific way it has to be done though. If you double click on the marker, and the marker property is selected, you can change the number. If you double click on the marker but the property is set for none, and you have any of the general selected and you double click on the marker and change the properties, the marker will disappear. In other words, changing the general properties on a marker will cause it to disappear. If you mess with it, you will see it for yourself. With the start of a new session, I allocate 1-9 as none and track visibility and track height selected. I put a marker at the top of the session and change the properties back to Marker and no general properties selected so all markers after don't carry things like track height when you click it.
Windows configuration. You can save heights etc. Just choose other option when creating or updating. Also, keyboard shortcut is .1* on numeric pad for configuration 1. Obviously use different num for each configuration saved
Sascha Michi I think it’s more of a grey. The white balance on my camera was set to auto so it always looked a little different depending on the lamps I was using in the background.
Hi. I like your channel but you put the background music too loud compared to your vocal. This becomes too distracting for me. I hope you could consider reducing the background music in the future. Cheers
Thanks for the tips. I'm mainly doing audiobook narration so much of the video didn't apply to my field, but the quick commands will come in very handy. One suggestion...it's a minor issue but your background music was kind of distracting. Thanks again!🤓👍
fun fact, even if you know a recommended buffer size for your interface, play with it, i have 2 laptops one i7 and one i5 and the i7 is much more powerful and twice the cores but for 24bit 192k the i7 needs an 8gb buffer while the i5 only needs 2gb or 2048mb, same ssd, same ram sticks, same software, same interface...
Kimberly Phipps you probably have short keys turned off. If you look to the right of the session window just above the scroll bar, there’s an icon with “az” on it. Click it so it’s yellow
There’s also different shortkeys for the clip window and for the group window, you’ll see the same icon on the upper right side of those windows too. Only 1 can be enabled. I find the session window one is most useful.
wow us cubase/nuendo people are literally laughing historically.. man i watched this video hoping protools has made improvements since its release but nope not really..
You could play a good character in a Hollywood movie, but also a killer. Easy. Your face transforms very fast. I would not want to make you angry. Believe me, i can read people well.
@@AndrewMasters ha ha ! Nice. Yes, but you are also handsone and less people try to mess with you, because of your face. Cheers from England, Manchester
I would have liked to see the screen mroe and less of you. I want to see what your'e doing and see the screen and check things out. I don't need to see your face so much.. SOmetimes you only give a quick shot of the screen and Im wondering what you jsut did. Very furstrating!
Ok you have no idea what you are talking about...You do a whole section on buffer size and are clueless to how modern PT works. Just leave the buffer to whatever you feel comfortable in for input monitoring and VI playing. The lowest your computer can cope with. *The buffer you choose in playback preferences is ONLY active when a track or tracks are record ARMED*. You never, ever need to change it, EVER. Because pro tools puts ALL tracks that are NOT record armed on 1024 playback buffer *anyway*. It's called a hybrid buffer.. Do not do what this guy does and drive yourself crazy changing the buffer back and forth as it will make no difference whatsoever for mixing as PT is always on a buffer of 1024 samples for mixing. I have tested this myself.. 32 or 1024 makes no difference, only when tracks are armed for recording.. and you need a low buffer for that anyway. If your cpu is full and you can't record more tracks in realtime, that's what commit or freeze is for.
Kill that background music after a short while and you got a perfect vid.
Thanks man.
Yes please!
Yessss it’s amazing but it’s so hard to focus but IM DOIN IT LOL
There’s soooo much good information here thank youuu
yeah its really a bit to loud haha
Mad seeing one of your videos from only 5 years ago, but then realising how far you have come on this journey Andrew. Thanks for the Pro Tools tips
@10:44 remember to hold down CTRL when you drag to the track/playlist so it stays locked in time
Grouping changes your workflow. Saves you so much time
Mike Cole grouping.. there’s always something. I think I briefly mentioned it..

This video reminds me of how much SoundFlow has changed my life. Tons of great ideas for macros in here. Thanks!
the last two tricks are good stuff
This video is fantastic!

thankyou... i dunno why you duplicate the track? just make a new playlist on each new track they become 01! then use the comp with no number genius!
^ What he said. So much easier to comp stuff on the same track instead of copying each part that you want over then editing them again
Thank you.

Great video, makes me excited to open Pro Tools for once.
So, you like throwing your money at a system that is mediocre at best?
How does this video not have more views. I feel like I learned more here than I did in 3 months of school in this topic haha.

What's the best way to make use of the background vocals L, C, and R tracks?

T & R for about 20 years now. I use them 35k trillion times a session. lol

great video brother but maybe drop that distracting music a bit? Thx tho
With that stacking tracks method your clips aren't going to be labeled helpfully. Could get confusing visually.

are you also the hand puppet??
