a certified PT expert once told me to dedicate myself to learning one shortcut per day, and after a few months, I'd know most of the important ones. It was the best advice ever.
16:36 When in GRID mode, grab a clip with the mouse and then if you hold "command" you can temporarilly slip it wherever you want. This is like my Nº1 shortcut for editing! I never ever switch grid modes! Thanks again, this was very helpful! Looking forward to your new courses and plugins!
Hey Jordan! Thank you for sharing :) I have a few additions: You can also use M and the three keys right of it to nudge (I use a German keyboard, so the keys may differ. For me it's M, Comma, Dot, Minus). The inner two nudge a "small" amount, the outer two nudge a "larger" amount, depending on your settings. With the grouped tracks you can also use the right mouse key instead of holding ctrl. Like soloing oder moving just one fader.
Good work! One note about shuffle mode though - if you edit a region while in shuffle it will effect the sync position of every region that follows it on that track. To avoid this you have to highlight all the regions that follow and lock them (command L) then they won't move.
Also for seemless transition between grid & slip you can for example click on any clip and hold Command and drag it as if it were in slip & once you release command it’ll go back to snapping to the grid! Hope this helps!
On a Mac, If you want to move regions to new tracks without losing their position in the timeline (such as consolidating two mono room mic tracks to a stereo track) hold control when clicking and dragging. when it moves to the next track it will be locked on the timeline in the same place as it’s source track. If you want to copy that selection to another track while keeping it in the exact same spot, hold Alt when clicking and dragging. Holding alt will make a copy of the region and you can drag it anywhere you’d like, but if you’re moving to another track it will lock it in place on the timeline.
the plugin settings hack was one I didn't know! Also for guys like me with a trackpad, you can infinitely zoom in and out both vertically and horizontally by holding the option key and scrolling with two fingers up and down or side to side.
I've been trying for months I even had Avid customer tech support try different things I still have not been able to get the horizontal movement from the scroll wheel on a mouse holding shift key
Great vid. Always useful to be reminded of some of these. Another useful tutorial would be on key commands whilst specifically tracking - such as creating playlists on the fly and punch in/out etc. Thanks for this though.
Hi Jordan, Crazy question that nobody seems to be able to answer...so I turn to you, the MASTERS of the universe. : ) I'm using Pro Tools 12.4 on my MacBook pro, and I'd like to be able to open the Transport window (bar) with a shortcut. With a "regular" computer it's COMM / 1 (on the numeric keyboard to the right) but obviously we don't have that on a laptop. I've even tried to create my own shortcut but it just doesn't seem to work. Any ideas would be fantastic.
If you dont have a numpad, you can nudge with comma or period. m and question mark do bigger nudges without you having to change the nudge amount! I find this faster because I dont have to take my hand off the mouse or cross my arms to reach the numpad.
Great video! I recently bought Pro Tools and this helps a lot. A quick question about the groups: Is there a shortcut to go through the groups? For example, you've got a kick - snare - overhead - total group. You are using the kick group but you want to go to the overheads, can you switch it with any key command? Thanks in advance!
Hey, I appreciate the video! Does anyone know the key command for go to position? I used to know it and stepped away from music for a while and have totally forgotten. Thanks in advance!
Got a question, similar to shuffle mode. Let's say I already have the whole song recorded, but I want to insert a 4 bar instrument break in the Middle of the song. Besides moving every single track 4 bars to the right and redoing all of the tempo and meter changes, is there a way to separate the entire session and move it over to create space in the middle? Great video, I'll definitely find use for this cheat sheet
Shuffle mode works the opposite way too. Turn on the ALL group, select 4 bars where you want to add the space, and CMD+D to duplicate. That’ll duplicate the bars you selected and push everything else back (if in shuffle mode). Or just use the ALL group to cut all the regions together and drag it all back
How do you Magnify parts of what you are working with to edit? For instance you were explaining how to change the grid and slip mode and you magnified the Grid/slip box. Can you do that via protools or is that post editing jordan magic? :) great shortcuts BTW cheers!
Great video - I like using shuffle mode for editing voiceover audio - however, I realise voiceover audio isn't hardcore music! Thank you for the video!
What macOS does your computer have and what ProTools version do you own? Just recently I've updated my mac's to high sierra and it's been affecting the usage of ProTools, I've been told to fix this I must purchase the most recent version of ProTools that runs better with High Sierra

The most annoying and useless shortcut is "return' which takes the curser or whatever is selected to the very head of the session. I've NEVER actually needed this shortcut but have accidentally hit it 1000s of times, wasting time on each occasion ! I'd LOVE to disable the bugger :)
a certified PT expert once told me to dedicate myself to learning one shortcut per day, and after a few months, I'd know most of the important ones. It was the best advice ever.
There aren't 90 important shortcuts for editing. Theres maybe 10 lol
Hey J and folks! The nudge command for small keyboard is CTRL + "," (control comma) or CTRL + "." (control period). Cheers!
Duuuude!! Thanks. I was wondering how to do that for to long. Cheers!
In commands key focus you don’t need to use any modifier keys (atleast on a Mac) you only need to hit the comma or period
most useful youtube comment ever. Thanks!

Had to stop the vid midway to say thank you! The information displayed here is much better than all others I’ve seen. 👍🏽

Yup! Use the right click all the time, but didn’t know about the other nudge keys
I enjoyed the video. The cheat sheet is something I'll print out to use as I learn all these useful shortcuts. Keep em coming!
thank you may friend. always great stuff! The less time we spend on the navigating process, the more time we can spend on our creativitity!
Simply the best
Thank you - super-useful tutorial explained very well - I was surprised by several of these I didn't know about ....Excellent!

Great vid but am I right to say that PT do not have the option to customize key commands?
On a Mac, If you want to move regions to new tracks without losing their position in the timeline (such as consolidating two mono room mic tracks to a stereo track) hold control when clicking and dragging. when it moves to the next track it will be locked on the timeline in the same place as it’s source track. Dude! I learned SO MUCH from this video. Thanks a lot
very useful thank you so much
THANK YOU!
If you want to have you waveform size set to default instead of double clicking the magnifying glass you can do " CMD Opt Cntrl [ "
the plugin settings hack was one I didn't know! Also for guys like me with a trackpad, you can infinitely zoom in and out both vertically and horizontally by holding the option key and scrolling with two fingers up and down or side to side.
you are a genius!!! very well explained, thank you so much!
hold shift while in grid mode and press F1 to have shuffle with gridmode on, you can also press F1 and F4 at the same time
Great Info Bro !!! Thank you for sharing !!
Great job man!
🐐you are the goat this is a amazing video you saved my life so much time ❗️
I have been trying to find out what is the mouse scroll wheel shortcut to move the timeline horizontally?
Not sure, but I recommend getting a mouse with a horizontal scroll wheel. The Logitech MX Master 2 mouse was a game changer for me!
Hold shift while scrolling
I've been trying for months I even had Avid customer tech support try different things I still have not been able to get the horizontal movement from the scroll wheel on a mouse holding shift key
Very Good and thanks!
thank you! super useful tips
Great vid. Always useful to be reminded of some of these. Another useful tutorial would be on key commands whilst specifically tracking - such as creating playlists on the fly and punch in/out etc. Thanks for this though.
I use a lot of these same commands while tracking. My usual punch in/out is CMD+Space
Fantastic video thank you
this is so helpful Thanks!

Very useful video :)
Thank you!

Have any advice on getting a good sound on drum machines ala ez drummer?
Can you nudge with the small Mac keyboard?
Does anyone know how to keep the grid lines but move a clip as if you were in slip mode? Very frustrating
Thanks for the awesome tutorial btw
Just hold down Command as you drag the clips while in grid mode
@@hardcoremusicstudio thanks alot!!

For german keyboards moving a selectiion up and down is "P" and "Ö".

Ah yeah, shuffle mode is great for that!
ty man
How do I get the cheat sheet ?

PT12 with High Sierra now
You need to run 12.8.3 for use with High Siera - This fixes the GUI lag the general sluggishness.
Good video send cheat sheet
how to you do a bezier or eased fade?
This is great. When keyboard focus is on, how badly does it affect turning certain groups on and off?
Never mind, I should've watched the whole video before asking.
quick undo hitting the wrong keys to get them back from what you just did wrong
shortcuts Windows vs. Mac...? 🤔

Nice shortcut list, but they're called "clips", not "regions" anymore - you're showing your age, lol !
