Wow, Paul Reubens is a freaking genius. He had just barely started his comedy career, and he had that audience eating out of the palm of his hand! By the way, I hope you all realize that this is likely his first ever recorded performance of doing the iconic tequila dance, from the movie " Pee-wee's Big Adventure." This footage is a valuable piece of comedic history, and the perfect example of why the Pee Wee Herman character is so iconic, and why Paul Reubens is going to be remembered as a comic Legend. Paul Rubens well deserves a place in the Comedy Hall of Fame.
Came here because I just heard the news today of Mr. Reuben’s passing. May he RIP. Thank you for putting smiles on our faces and laughter in our voices.

Wow I’m in tears. He looks like he had been doing this for years. Totally unique act. Complete control of himself and the audience. Just an amazing performance. 😂😂😂. Part of the Genius is he is just doing and saying completely ordinary and juvenile stuff and it is hilarious due to the delivery and context. Pure comedic genius.
Well… not to spoil the fun but he *had* been doing this act/character for years at this point. The whole original gimmick of the Pee-Wee character was meant to be a send-up of the stand-up format. He was pretending to be this intentionally “bad” and inexperienced comic who was just starting out (hence the bit about him only having weeks of experience). In actuality he’d already been doing this character with The Groundlings for years in front of audiences.
RIP PeeWee...we will miss you as one of the best things of the 80s! Still gives me great laughs today watching the clips etc. Great Talent that blessed us with the best medicine-laughter!
I’ve never seen this before and it’s impressive and really funny. Part of his special talent was that at the beginning he’s practically channeling a 10 y.o. boy trying to do stand up comedy, then he transitions into something a little more mature, then walks the edge between the two for the rest of the set. Just brilliant.
OMG I had tears in my eyes😂. I first saw Pee Wee on his HBO special in the 80's and thought he was brilliant. Later I bought the VHS tapes of his TV show for my 3 yr old daughter in the 90's. She loved it. When she got a little older we watched Pee Wee's Big Adventure together, which we also loved. Try to think of another comedian who was actually playing to adults, acting like a kid, and was loved by both. The man was genius! From all accounts I've seen, in real life he was a caring, thoughtful and sweet friend to those he knew. Search for Conan's tribute to him recently on YT. RIP Paul Reubens.

You got that right! He didn't break character until 1991, a whole decade, where everyone thought he really was Pee-wee. If you asked a dozen people during the 80s who Paul Reubens is, I doubt anyone would know...but they'd sure be able to identify who PWH is! Very few have so completely inhabited a character that the lines between character & performer were blurred. Barry Humphries as Dame Edna, Jim varney as Ernest P. Worrell, or more recently, Daniel Whitney as Larry the Cable Guy come to mind; but no one took it as far as Reubens. I hate to bring it up, but I think that's what was so shocking about his arrest. His mugshot was so far removed from PWH that some fans felt legitimate betrayal.
Fantastic set. When he gave them that first SHHH!! and sneer, he owned that audience from there on. Then he goes right to the loudest person in the crowd and gets them to participate in a gag. Brilliant showmanship. Pee Wee was such a great character. He could get away with a lot of stuff in that character that a normal comedian couldn't.
Others have said it here, too, but when he acts annoyed at the laughter, looks behind himself to see what's so funny, then does the, "stop laughing, let me talk" bit is just on a whole other level.
It's so easy to forget how new and novel his treatment of stand-up was. Knowing him for his later work, watching the genesis (from this and from his Dating Game appearance) is wonderful.

I remember this HBO special because of the cookie recipe [his wife's] that Carl Reiner is giving to the audience piecemeal and having them repeat at the beginning of this bit. Wow, I think this was from 1980. I have a vague memory of seeing this on HBO as a young child. I used to watch all of the Young Comedians Specials on HBO. @Rage Theatre2020 The story was there were other guys in the theatre actually having sex and that's why the cops were called. They were gone by the time the police arrived but figured they could make it worth their while by finding somebody. Paul and his friends were just masturbating but that was enough to get busted. The other question would be why go to a theatre rather than at home with a video. Easy answer to that one; he was back home and staying at his parents house and thought it best to do this with his buddies there. It was, indeed, total bullshit and an invasion of his civil rights to go public. It was also a teaching moment for all of us within the public's "right to know" and what amounted to a public lynching of a funny, brilliant and genuine human being. "Okay? Okay!"
Getting people to laugh by demanding they stop is brilliant comedy. This has to be one of the earliest Pee=Wee performances on tape, considering the black tie and he refers to doing stand-up for a couple of weeks. According to Ruebens, the red tie came pretty early in the character's development.
My sister and I grew up watching Pee-Wee's Playhouse and all the his movies as kids. To this day, I still have a @peeweeherman doll and the toy version of his chair, Cherry put away for safe keeping, along with a cassette tape of the t.v. show. Yet another piece of my childhood taken way too soon. #RIPPeeWeeHerman #RIPPaulReubens #FuckCancer 💔💔
This was one of the few times [if not only] he was introduced [afterward] as 'Paul Reubens' along with his character 'Pee-Wee Herman'. Later he would only be Pee-Wee when he was in the suit and in character. He would not respond if you asked for 'Paul'. Oft he would say something like _'Oh, is he here?'_ He was first and foremost an actor who went to CalArts [where he roomed with David Hasselhoff and hung out with Katey Sagal and Cassandra Peterson]. When he, Phil Hartman and John Paragon- _geez, they're all gone now_ -were spitballing ideas in the backroom of the Groundling Theatre for this character of a 12 year-old comic who'd been at it for 'a couple of weeks' he recalled a voice he'd developed for a small role he had in his youth as the irritating friend of the Day's younger child in an adaptation of *"Life With Father".* Paul embraced the character and went on to do nothing but good things with it. After a short hiatus from public view after _the 'incident'_ he went on to a live audience on MTV to ask *_"Heard any good jokes lately?"_* Brilliant.
PeeWee his delicate sweet face, tiny body, corky voice, funny ears, expressive eyes, lite on his feet, hi and low pitch, shrunk suit, What a guy. God's blessing on you PeeWee in everything you do. We love you.
His tight suit and little boy haircut give the illusion that he has a small body, but you can tell in closeups that he physically fills out that suit. He wasn't a small guy.

I remember watching this episode on HBO while on duty at the old Mom & Pop ambulance service I worked for in the late 80’s. I think I wet myself laughing so hard.
The most original comedian of my time. Ur still the best P.W.
What a genius man. Seriously. He was punk rock.
this is gold. cant thank you enough
Hajer Hamed, thanks for your comment.....for if you click on my webpage at www.imasportsphile.com....you will find more than several "veins of gold" in the 1500+ vintage comedy, music and sports that I have posted...plus I have 9,000 more to post....so, check back often...as I post every day.
For whatever reason, knowing that Paul Reubens’ utterly absurd humor is crossing languages, and by this time decades really brings some joy to my thoughts. I’m glad to see you enjoyed this and also shared a comment. The kind of day I’ve had with the news like it is, this kind of special stupidity feels truly important.
Paul is a legend, and an amazing performer.
RIP brother
What was so amazing is how fully developed his entire act was even before he "hit it big." He just passed away last week at 70, but his legacy will live on. I know I am, but what are you?? Someone who really misses Pee Wee...
I remember seeing this back in the day.
Don, thanks for your comment....if you enjoyed this video, see the 300 hrs (1300 videos) of comedy, music and sports that I have already posted...with 2000 hrs more to post at www.imasportsphile.com
"Okay? Okay!"
So! Heard any good jokes lately?
We watched this when it came out and PeeWee was an instant hit in our house. RIP. Everyone was excited when he got his movie and TV show.
The birth of a legend
I birthed a legend when I pooped this morning.
@@unacceptableviews4404 did he look like his daddy?
@@rickv4473 It looked, and smelled, like your mama
Getting people to laugh by demanding they stop is brilliant comedy. This has to be one of the earliest Pee=Wee performances on tape, considering the black tie and he refers to doing stand-up for a couple of weeks. According to Ruebens, the red tie came pretty early in the character's development.
Classic Pee Wee. Love and miss him!
Imagine if he had the Tequila song here with the dance! It would've set that place off with how receptive they were to Paul's character Pee Wee ✌️💙
He was Hilarious, loved his show, RIP Paul!!!!!
Carl got it. Two great talents. Too bad there wasn't a spot in Oceans Eleven for both.

Too late , I appreciate this guy
He was so brilliant :)
He came out to Super Mario World fast stage music in the 80's! Talk about being ahead of his time!!
This was one of the few times [if not only] he was introduced [afterward] as 'Paul Reubens' along with his character 'Pee-Wee Herman'. Later he would only be Pee-Wee when he was in the suit and in character. He would not respond if you asked for 'Paul'. Oft he would say something like _'Oh, is he here?'_
He was first and foremost an actor who went to CalArts [where he roomed with David Hasselhoff and hung out with Katey Sagal and Cassandra Peterson]. When he, Phil Hartman and John Paragon- _geez, they're all gone now_ -were spitballing ideas in the backroom of the Groundling Theatre for this character of a 12 year-old comic who'd been at it for 'a couple of weeks' he recalled a voice he'd developed for a small role he had in his youth as the irritating friend of the Day's younger child in an adaptation of *"Life With Father".*
Paul embraced the character and went on to do nothing but good things with it. After a short hiatus from public view after _the 'incident'_ he went on to a live audience on MTV to ask *_"Heard any good jokes lately?"_*
Brilliant.
THANKS DUDE 🫡🤘
He was in Michael J Fox's first ever movie. Midnight Madness
Scared ya didnt i

8:55 🤣😅😂 you could never get away with that today.
Of course you could.
@@josephsmith8673 wow..my exact thought! Exact words...I guess I'm not special!
Acutally, he still does. He's BAAAAACCCCKKKKK!!!!
In his will Paul Reubens left careful instructions to get that guy his wallet back. He was one of the best ever. Thank you for all the joy Pee-Wee!
He wasn't a small guy.
just what you like in a little boy, huh ??
That was awesome! RIP Pee-wee. Shoutout to Camille.
the reaction to him at the time must of been blowing his mind. only made him more confident as he went along .. killed it
must HAVE been, not must of been.
He is the best after all these years.
Pee-wee is a true master of his craft.
What a shame we missed out on greatest talent ever,!!!!!!
LOVE this audience! Their laughter and camraderie with PeeWee is the best tribute to his life & genius.
The best part of Pee Wee's act was his laugh. Gets me every time
Take a drink every time Pee-Wee says okay!
I'm drunk!
I said shit out loud when he pulled out the Chinese glasses..lmao I past out
Who is here after he was on Conan? Feb 2020.
Paul Reubens is one of the comedy greats, he can really command an audience, and he was amazing in BLOW
RIP you absolute legend.
Rest in peace Paul Reubens
Outrageously funny act! Wow, forgot how much of a comedic genius Paul Reubens was.
