After seeing FoMoCo plastered over all of the casings, I've come to the conclusion Ford designed components were deliberately designed to be almost unserviceable. I bought the manual CTC fluid extractor since it was on sale with a Princess Auto unit to replace the fluids. I'm awaiting the Haldex maintenance parts, including the pump since my AWD stopped working. Although I used CTC synthetic gear oil, I'll use Volvo Haldex fluid, avaiulable through Amazon., Your excellent DIY videos are always so instructional and help to convince this 51+ year Volvo owner that despite the FoMoCo influence, a Volvo is still repairable.
The maintenance never stops on my S60R. Diff oil, Aoc oil, angle gear oil, transmission fluid, engine oil, radiator flush, brake fluid, power steering fluid...it never stops!
John O you hit the magic ”10” years. You didn’t say which year yours is but I’m guessing it’s 200X something? 😏 Most of it are wear and tear things, once you’ve changed it, it’s good for another 10 😊
Thank you for all these great videos! To be clear...Haldex 5 fill/drive/refill until leaks, transmission fluid refill and get car to hot and remove inner plug until it stops leaking at running temp, rear diff remove 50ml after top off front angle gear remove 100ml after fill
On my 2013 XC70 T6, the drain plug faces the passenger side wheel, and is easier to get at than on the 2009 shown here. It's a 13mm hex plug with the copper washer.
I've just done this on a 2013 XC70 T6. I did not find a reference on having to extract the 100ml at the end. Since the fill plug is facing the passenger on mine at a slightly lower position, comparing to the earlier models, I don't think the extraction of 100ml is required on the haldex gen5 variants. Also, I have used Liqui Moly 2048 oil since that is the OEM.
I checked the Vida manual for the 2014 XC60 D5 AWD and it says nothing about removing 50ml / 100ml from the bevel gear and rear differential. I think it changed with haldex 5 as you wrote.
This is weird. For my year (2015) in one place Vida says to "suck out 100ml of oil" - this is for bevel gear. Then in another place for "final drive front and rear" it just says to add until it over fills.
Exactly the same! So confused. So I tried to put another car VIN (searching internet, for example XC60 2014) and there is no information about sucking, just fill until continous flow changes into single drops. The same about Haldex and rear differential.
Nice videos. If the vehicle is level and the shop manual says to extract a given amount, I would do so. They assume vehicle is level. If someone has the vehicle angled up on high ramps, the angle of the car could easily offset the 50ml extraction amount - think about it. Wait till diff or angle gear stops dripping. At this point we know that the fluid level is even with extraction point. Now back off the ramps or lower angled jacked point of vehicle and level the car on the ground. The fluid level will now be below the extraction point.
Great video. (I posted something similar on your rear gear videos so looks similar but a little different as ask specific question about rear gear vs angle gear). I’m looking to do this to my Volvo’s in the relatively near future. I've got a 2013 S60 T6 R-Design AWD and a 2015 XC60 T6 AWD. They both have the codes B6304T4 (Engine) and TF-80SC (transmission info). You mention removing 100 ml in the angle gear oil as well. Do you know if extracting 100 ml l is required for the angle gears in my vehicles as well? How did you figure that out as everyone I asked including 3rd party shops that work on Volvo’s don’t show a maintenance schedule so therefore have no info on how to change the fluid? I’m guessing that mine have the same angle gear as the one you show, but don’t really know. Also, removing 100 ml with a hose connected doesn’t account for amount of oil in the hose, so maybe should remove a little less I would guess. Better to be slightly overfull, then under full, right? Are angle gears vented? I know very little about angle gears but I would guess they are as most rear gears are vented. I'm probably going with a Red Line gear oil that is an API GL 5+ 75W90. It's a high performance synthetic gear oil and I’ve had great success with Red Line gear oils in the past.
Owen Hoffmann IF you use the SAME, FULL tube that you used to add the oil with the pump, and IF after you filled it, were able to connect the syringe to the pump hose without losing ANY fluid out of the full pump tube, then yes.... you could theoretically get 100mL out by just measuring what is in the syringe. But this video shows a wider pump tube being used to pump the oil into the unit, the pump tube is removed when unit is full and over-flowing, and then an empty and thinner syringe tube is used to extract the 100mL once the oil in the unit is no longer dripping out. You would want/need to account for the amount of oil that is now in the tube by emptying the contents of the syringe AND tube into a separate container to be sure you are not taking out too much.
So that the oil level is below the top of the drive shaft seals. If you don't take out the extra oil it will find it's way around the seals and weep out. It's just so it won't make a mess. Take a look at the schematic in the video that shows the syringe with the arrows to pull out 100ml. You can see that the fill plug is above the drive shaft seals. If you leave the extra in there it will be higher than the drive shaft seals and potentially weep out.
Good afternoon. Thank you very much for the help. I have only one question. Is it the same oil for the haldex and the angular? Is it 75w90 GL5 for both?
Thanks for the video! I have an xc60 2014 with awd and automatic tran. At the local volvo dealer, they told me that you must not change oil in a diff, becouse there are some sensors inside and you could messed them up and destroy the diff. Now it has more than 200k km. What do you think? And how much oil do you need for both diffs? Best regards Your customer from Slovenia! Slava to Russia!!!
@@volvosweden THX for the answer. I am a bit confused on the video of changing oil in automatic transmission. I understood that in goes 4 liter of oil, but in the beginning of the video it was mentioned that the total volume of the gearbox is 7 liters. How much oil do I need to change (how much of oil must I poor inside the transmission) on my xc60 (2014)? THX
Thanks for sharing this! Very helpful to the community. Question.. I have a 3.2 2009 and in the VIDA instructions I have there is no mention of removing 100 mL of fluid. Do you have any idea why there may be a difference? I was thinking we had different year instructions. Mine are from 2014.
It seems Volvo has updated the procedure. The new procedure (for your year as well @volvosweden) is to just fill up the bevel gear until it comes out of the fill hole. Once the overfill has slowed to dripping install the plug.
Vida doesn’t say anything about the 100ml removal from the angle gear. It confirms that 50ml need to be removed from the rear diff and 40ml from the Haldex unit, but nothing from the bevel gear. I checked for a few models and years. Still No confirmations about the 100ml.

Hi Sergio....I think he mentioned in another video that his garage floor slopes, so when the car is on the ramps...the car itself is level. That's what he said anyway.
I cannot seem to thread the hose into the hole. Any trick to this? I see that you had a tricky time but got it to work. I have a 2010 XC70 3.2. Thanks.
Hello from Uk. I have got 2013 volvo s80 1.6diesel power shift automatic. It has got 37000miles on the clock. I want to change the gearbox oil. Same way as you did. Could you please tell the location of the drain bolt and advice on how to do it. 😊Thanks
Very nice videos!I also would like to see a video about the ATF replace. BTW, where did you find all this servicing information? I am looking to buy a service manual for my car (other brand, not Volvo), but I cannot find it nowhere.
Only AWD models have it. The angle gear box transmits torque from the front-axle thru a 90 degree-angle to the propeller shaft that delivers torque to the Haldex AWD clutch unit, then on to the rear wheels.
Engine doesn't matter...as long as it's AWD you'll have a haldex system with a front (bevel gear) and rear differential, depending on the year of your car is the generation of haldex it has... depending on that the location of the drain plug might be a little bit different than the one shown in the video.
Good practice to avoid costly repairs is to change the transmission fluid, the bevel gear fluid, and the rear differential fluid every 30,000-40,000 miles. It's easier to change all three at the same time that way you won't forget any of them.
I seem to have a droning noise mostly when decelerating between 20-60mph in my XC90 with 122k miles. I fear it could be coming from the bevel gear. Do you think changing the oil would improve this.
I have the same issue on an old but low mileage xc90. Forums generally suggest it to be rear hub bearing but I'm going to replace rear diff and AYC oil first as it will be cheaper and good practice anyway.
I had the bevel gear go out on mine at around 150k (stupid previous owner never changed the oil). Mine only made noise as soon as I'd take my foot off the gas, it was a sound almost like a drill when using a very big bit. The sound was higher in pitch the faster my speed and would get lower in pitch as the car slowed down. If this is what is wrong with your car that means the gear is stripped, and the only way to fix it is to replace it or remove all the AWD components and turn your car into FWD only
I just picked up a 2009 XC90 V8 RD with 77,000 miles for my wife and I get a humming sound only when decelerating. Do you think this could be my issue?
The bevel gear went out on mine at around 150k (the idiot previous owner never changed the fluid). It would start making noise as soon as I'd take my foot off the gas. It sounded almost like a drill using a very large bit, and it was higher in pitch the faster my speed. The noise would get lower in pitch as the car slowed down. The gear was stripped, the only fix was to replace it
I really don't understand...initially you say that we have to extract 100 ml out from the angle gear and another 50 ml from the rear axle.So in total will be 150 ml...I'm right?
I believe that the car needs to be level when you do this, now you had front of the car raised so the oil level isn't 100% correct. I don't know does it really matter, but if you want to be precise...

I just picked up a 2009 XC90 V8 RD with 77,000 miles for my wife and I get a humming sound only when decelerating. Do you think this could be my issue?
I have the same problem on my 2008 xc90 3.2. Did you find what the problem was?
The bevel gear went out on mine at around 150k (the idiot previous owner never changed the fluid). It would start making noise as soon as I'd take my foot off the gas. It sounded almost like a drill using a very large bit, and it was higher in pitch the faster my speed. The noise would get lower in pitch as the car slowed down. The gear was stripped, the only fix was to replace it
this is not the same as automatic gearbox right? I have my xc90 T6 with 50,000 km do I need to change it?
Its different oil. Just change transmission oilevey 60000km.
Respect. how much oil goes into the manual transmission. volvo xc60 2.4 2013 awd.😀
M66 manual gearbox you need 1.9 litres
i think with this pump you have 40% air instead of oil in the system
Interesting thought… you make me wonder now…
👍
I really don't understand...initially you say that we have to extract 100 ml out from the angle gear and another 50 ml from the rear axle.So in total will be 150 ml...I'm right?
+Ionescu Ciprian 100ml out from the angle gear in the front. And 50ml from rear diff.
Many thanks...you are the best!
I can confirm that on a 2016 v60 the angle gear is factory filled to the fill plug.
What about a 2010 Volvo S80 T6 AWD?
Same like in the video.
I think he should get a P2 XC and start these vids all over again...
I love the P2 XC70
is it the same procedure on my xc 70 2004? after you filled it you take out 100ml?
+Niklas Nilsson Not sure. I will look at VIDA and let you know.
volvosweden thank you !
@@volvosweden hi, were you able to check if there is difference in VIDA for 2004? also front 100ml and rear 50ml? Thanks a lot
@@niklasnilsson9392 did you get an answer how much to take out from 2004? 100ml front/ 50ml rear? Thankyou
@@saluki1095 no i didnt but I filled up all the way and went for a ride then filled up to max again and that have worked good.
My 2010 D5 has 170 000km 👍
I believe that the car needs to be level when you do this, now you had front of the car raised so the oil level isn't 100% correct. I don't know does it really matter, but if you want to be precise...
Its level. the floor in the garage slopes down. I know it looks off but its actually good.
Okay, then it's correct. In video it seems like the front is much higher.
Great videos!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
instead of filling and then extracting I just measured .75 litre and put that in
Do you service your car at volvo?
At home
+volvosweden Alright man! 😀
Wow, I've not know that I need to take 100 ML out of the front angle gear!
on my xc60 2013 VIDA dont say to do that...
