I love Maya Angelou! This is a poem that I am working on to do publicly soon. I feel that STILL I RISE definitely has deep messages both negatively and positively! I also have performed or done another one of her poems, THE PHENOMENAL WOMAN, which is my favorite of the two. I enjoyed your discussion of what you felt her tone or meaning conveys to the reader.
I think I'll make time to read this in class tomorrow. Maybe find time to work in Women by Alice Walker this week too. I remember not enjoying Maya Angelou back when I was in school. Don't know what was wrong with me back then. 🙂
Maya Angelou's, "Still I Rise" is a favorite among African-American feminists. The speaker in the poem was an African-American describing her life to the oppressor and saying black is beautiful. There's a theme of racial identity in the text. Thanks for making this diverse video.
