A new-to-me Mama Bear and her two wee cubs swung by a few spots along our trails recently. When they got to the Rub-a-Dub-Tub, Mama clearly needed a break, and wanted it all to herself, no matter how many times her cubs tried to join in. 🤣 Bap! Bap! Bap! Bap!
fwiw, I think I did know this Mama as a younger bear or yearling before. I’m not sure, though. I’d have to cross reference my archives to be able to say for certain.
I do Love it when I can learn the identify of a bear, then see that same bear grow and visit across several years. It’s such a thrill for me. Take Sadie, for example - I knew her as a young bear. I then watched her grow up and eventually begin courting with a boy bear during bear mating season. The following spring, Sadie returned with her first set of cubs. She was a first-time Mama and she came back to visit here with her first crop of wee ones. Made me so happy! Sadie came back again, this spring, with her cub-turned-yearling. (Unfortunately, one of her cubs, Topsy, didn’t make it. Mortality rates for a bear in its first year are pretty dismal. 😔) Sadie and her yearling boy had one big last hurrah around our little mountain, and around the wisteria arbor, in particular.
Mama Sadie must have “emancipated” Turvy recently. I’ve seen a yearling who looks a lot like him just ambling and poking around, looking generally lost, as so many newly-shunned yearlings are wont to do. Then, today, I saw that Sadie was romping around the mountain with a new boyfriend. I’m SO, SO, SO psyched about some of this new mating behavior footage my tail cameras captured. Can’t wait to see it on the big screen. (I just had a little preview on the tiny trail camera screens which made me do a happy dance.)

The fox almost never gets the memo, either! He could easily lean his head over the edge of the cub-tub for a drink of water, but instead, he always balances on the edge of the bigger tub and risks falling in while getting a drink. Makes perfect sense. 🙄

Earlier this spring, I also got some sweet footage of a Mama Bear in the tub *with* her yearling. (Instead of simply fighting over it.) May not have lasted long, but it was a rare enough event that it made me very happy to have seen it.

@@FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS - I’m glad you have two tubs, so the babies can (theoretically) play in the smaller tub. Naturally, they wan’t to be in the same tub as mom, but at least the ridiculously adorable little ones have another option.

😁 Mama Bears can be really sweet and playful with their cubs - love it when I get those captures. But dang, can they dole out the tough love, too!! They can be really fierce!
Even if it looks awful, that tough-love probably helps prepare cubs and yearlings for the real world, which can be incredibly harsh during their first year. (Unfortunately, cubs have a dismal mortality rate, as high as 50%. 😢)
Sometimes the cubs get the memo and check out the cub-tub. They usually want whatever their Mommy is having. The funny thing is I’ve had way more ginormous male bears squeezing themselves into that cub-tub than I have had cubs playing in it. Crack me up!

It’s just a darn shame it doesn’t pay (for the original creators, anyway.) I could sure use some money for batteries. 😁 (I literally just spent another $239 on them just tonight. 🙄 🔥 🤣 )

All the animals do enjoy either resting in, or drinking from the Rub-a-Dub-Tubs, which keeps me busy with maintenance.
While the raccoons enjoy drinking from tubs, they don’t really immerse themselves there. They do, however, thoroughly enjoy “swimming” in and exploring what i call “The Frog Pond” - which is fed by a natural stream-head, located lower down our mountain in a ravine. Sometimes a whole bunch of raccoons will hang out down there at night, together, in the heat of summer. They make me smile!

And in about 16 months, she’ll be pushing them away for real. 😢 I wish the cubs could stay with their Mamas through a 2nd winter. They’d have better survival prospects.

I've forgotten, Amy. What happens to the babies in that first year that so many don't make it? Predators? Illness?
Yes - (including predation by adult male bears who want to force the female back into estrus so they’ll mate again, although that probably doesn’t happen nearly as often as kills from other predators.)
There are all sorts of other dangers, too, the main threat being automobiles. Loads of cubs get hit by cars. 😢 And loads of Mama Bears get hit by cars, too - then their orphaned cubs aren’t old enough to fend for themselves.
Land bridges over highways for wildlife are a great, relatively new concept - but they’re too expensive for many communities, and, unfortunately, they aren’t high up on the priority list for most governments. It’s a darn shame.
Aside from illness, there’s also poisoning, whether intentionally or as a result of bears eating toxic substances that humans left out carelessly, within easy reach of bears. (Bears are attracted by all sorts of strong smells.) There’s also trophy-hunting, poaching, and your run-of-the-mill mortal gunshot wounds from the generally paranoid & hateful human contingent, too. I suppose that’s technically poaching, but I’m sure people around here don’t think of it that way.
Thankfully a great number of folks in WNC love the bears just as much as we all do, so the bears do have a fighting chance around here - despite all the other many dangers in the world.

Sometimes I think that’s the way Mama Bears dote on their favorites. (They drag their cubs around by the ears, too. Haven’t seen this Mama do that yet, but plenty of others.) Maybe it’s a case of the squeaky wheel getting all the attention?

This original footage of Mama Darryl (Bertha) really cracked me up. This may have been the first time I saw her and The Darryls? (The cubs ended up with that name bc of this silly video.)

Mama Bears always dole out tough love!! Just looks a bit harsh to us humans.
My guess is that the tough love helps prepare her little ones for the big bad world, which is extra-dangerous for bear cubs in their first year. (The mortality rate for bears in their first year is terribly high.)
@FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS I guess it depends where you live because a guy in North Carolina has several bears visiting him there were these 2 young cubs now full grown. They introduced themselves and they came back in which we hoped to see. They communicated by gestures of how they were when they are younger. It was amazing and no mom around. I am sure she would be fighting them. But it was pleasant to see them. I guess they have either better bears or they just know how to treat their young down there better. Yes they are black bears. It is amazing how much they usually respect humans but they do break & enter cars. Lol one loves a chair. It is like he has a favourite chair.

Trust me, Simone certainly doled out tough-love during her time as Mama for those yearlings. Maybe not at Patrick’s while they were visiting and eating, but it’s just a part of what Mama Bears do. Simone most definitely doled out some extra-extra-tough-love when she sent those yearlings packing so she could seek a mate again.
Poor yearlings, it’s such a sad time when the Mama who loved them one day, is chasing them away and shunning them the next. The yearlings don’t understand, and can often look despondent during that time. Then again, some of the newly-“emancipated” yearlings who’ve passed through here had obviously recovered and were having the time of their lives. They were still hanging together and playing and wrestling. Those happier visits make me smile!
And, yes! I love how bears have their favorite places to rest and sit here, too! That’s why I end up having so many cameras trained on certain spots. (Like the hammock, or the chair swing. Or like my Wisteria arbor. Some bears like to sit on the bench under the arbor. (Like Mama Bear Darryl - aka - Bertha often did.) Other bears just like to chew on the bench and drag it down the hill. 🤣

I understand a mother's need for a moment of relaxation, rest and solitude... but she was too brutal with her little ones. 😕
She’s just totally a bear Mama, through and through. That’s the way they all are with each other! Ain’t nothing to them, really, even though it may look brutal to us humans. Bears love playing rough. I suppose it helps the little ones learn to survive a little better in a really tough world.

Oh gosh, it’s SO easy to do! Especially because they can seem so anthropomorphic. I try not to, but when I see them in a tub, or playing with toys and with each other - especially while standing on their hind legs - it’s really hard to resist projecting that way.
But the sobering statistics usually bring me back to reality. (The super high mortality rate for bears in their first year, for example. It can be as high as 50%! Dismal prospects. So, it’s probably a really good thing that Mama Bears tend to play rough, and dole out all that tough love.)
It’s definitely a dangerous world out there for all the critters.
