I lived in Pisgah Forest, outside of Brevard, and “noticed” a bear and cub on my deck one afternoon doing their best to get my hot tub cover off. Mama ended up climbing on top of it and it buckled.
Doesn’t surprise me one bit. We had an old neighbor in Fairview Forest who had to replace her hot-tub cover umpteen times. It didn’t matter if her deck was essentially 4 stories off the ground with no stair access, and only talllll posts to climb. The bears always came back to get into the tub. They know a good thing when they see it (and smell it)!

That's some consolation. :-) My husband and I got to be in your beautiful country once, briefly, during one of our rare trips outside our beleaguered country. We even got to be on Skye during a rare, clear-skied summer solstice. The purple-twilight sunset over the Sound of Sleat was just stunning. It was the trip of a lifetime and we often talk about going back someday. I still cherish the "sea porcelain" that I found on so many of your country's shores. We probably won't ever get back there again, but we were instantly smitten, as I suppose most folks are. (For good reason!) Thanks for writing. :-)
As another viewer suggested, and had occurred to me as well, I should probably get a shallower baby pool for the little ones, just in case they come back. Problem is, if the tub isn't heavy enough when full of water, the bears will just tip it over. They love doing that kind of thing. They have certainly tried to knock over this tub, but it's way too heavy for that when it's full of water.

I’d never seen them before, and likely won’t see them again. But it sure was sweet getting to see them with our own eyes this time.
I'm surprised at the cubs balance at such a young age. Mom knows her cubs are safe here and wants her spa time with Wilson. These are do fun to watch. Poor mom getting stepped on by her cubs.

Well well Mother deer has it made in the shade. She has a bath tub too with her 3 little bears just waiting to tempt mother to push one out and pull one in for a CUB BATH. oh Goldy is eating a morning meal on her way to school 🐻🐻🐻🐂 👩🎓
fwiw, I empty, scrub, disinfect, and then refill the tub very frequently. The *instant* a bear gets in the water, it looks muddy and dirty as hell. They carry a lot of dirt and debris in their fur. Sometimes, after they are wet, they will roll around and play on the ground, then get back in the tub again, thereby putting even more debris into the water, like wood-chips, etc.
Already got one there, with another ball in it for the little ones. I placed it there after I captured this footage. (I posted a pic of the little-cub-tub on the Community Page.) Happily, one little cub already discovered the tub - although he couldn't stay there long since he had to run to catch up with his family. :-)
Thank you!! I've got part 2 from this visit in the works. The family actually returned for another shorter dip in the tub a week later. I can't remember if I liked that footage as much, but I may edit that footage, as well, if they don't come back and make another splash between then and now. Here's hoping they do return! I'd sure love to see them again.
Our well is located really, really far from our house, for whatever reason. I placed the tub down there closer to the well, so that I could clean and refill the tub more easily, while ensuring the bears will have complete privacy from us. (Unless we’re driving up or down the mountain, which is pretty rare these days, as our driveway passes between the tub and the well.) I’m never worried about a bear coming to bother me while I’m cleaning the tub. I make enough noise at the task, so, if they are anywhere near while I’m working on the tub, they can hear me working from a long way off. They just keep their distance. If we happen to see one during our walks, which is quite rare, the bears usually just head off deeper into the forest to get away from us. That’s as it should be, of course. Bears just want to keep to themselves, for the most part, and we try to let them do that without getting in the way!
No! She's actually a different girl! I was surprised to meet this lovely Mama Bear this year, frankly. I thought after spring had already come and gone with no sight of any bear cubs that we wouldn't get to see any this year. But then this sweet new family showed up, and has swung by several times now. I always hope for another visit, but until that good fortune may occur again, I cherish the footage I've captured already. She really enjoyed it up here and lingered a good bit in front of the cameras on this day, and again in early July, so there's some more to share. Mama Darryl has been very busy courting and sparking with the neighborhood boys. Mating season has pretty much come to a close now, so when I see her these days, she's calmer and just moseying about on her own. She was definitely interested in making some more bear cubs. Here's hoping we get to see her again next spring with a new family in tow. Mama Darryl, of all the bears we've "met", loves all the different 'playgrounds' on our property the most -- from the tub, to the arbor, to the hammock, and beyond. Hopefully she will soon discover the new pond along the new trail someday. I think she'd like that. (Also hoping, as always, that Mama Darryl and her friends will be able to evade hunters during 'bear season' when they are on their walk-abouts. I always worry for them, and am always so happy and relieved whenever I get to see them again. :-)
Ha Ha! Yeah. I was thinking about that for quite some time. A larger tub would be difficult to maintain, and might take too much water from our well, so…. I purchased a littler “cub-tub” instead!
