And then there was one. The last female munchkin died yesterday. Ruth Robinson Duccini passed away. She was 95. This leaves the lone survivor from this classic movie, Jerry Maren who is the middle munchkin handing the lollipop to Judy Garland. He's the last one left.
I finally saw this film for the first time yesterday and watching this scene felt almost surreal since I knew the guy in the middle was actually still alive, while the rest of the film felt like an ancient fantasy disconnected to our modern day world.

There was a special education teacher assigned to a student in my fourth grade class named Mrs. Marenghi in Chelmsford MA. I'll always remember She said she likes to joke she married into a famous family, her husband's uncle was Jerry Maren, the guy in the middle of the lollipop guild. Maren was from Lynn. He shortened his name from Marenghi because he didn't think people would be able to pronounce it. He was 17 at the time and had dropped out of high school to try acting. He was only 3 foot 6 at the time and had no perception it was a big role at all, nor that the movie would be popular. A lot of the second half of the movie was shot in 1937 and the budget was much lower at the time, a lot of the second half was reshot when they got more money from MGM.
Pinto Colvig was a very talented voice actor. He was the early voice of Goofy, and fans of MST3K will know him as Coily the Spring Sprite (Nooooooo springs!)
I see some comments from people preferring the original voice, and that's fine, we're all entitled to our opinions, but I like the dubbed ones better. Why? Because their mannerisms and facial expressions give the impression that they're trying to be little tough guys, and that's how the dubbed voices sound.
