This cartoon was made in 1936 in the middle of the depression, people went to bed hungry in those years and it left a lasting impression on those who lived through it like my parents, when I grew up in the 1950’s and 1960’s people still talked about those times and how hard life was back then and this cartoon is a window into that time in America

    • @jeffyoung60

We saw the lingering effects of the Great Depression in the black-and-white photos of our WW2 army, navy, marines, army air force young men. They were extremely skinny, although not stunted in height. You see it best in WW2 navy photos taken on ships in the Pacific campaigns. The weather tended to be hot while sailing in the Central and South Pacific. While resting on deck, young Navy men could take off their shirts and sunbathe. It is astonishing to see how skinny these young men were compared to the same age group today where health experts admonish them on being overweight.
My late father was only a child during the height of the Great Depression. He doesn't remember it but he was ingrained with the social values that came out of it which meant being stoic in the face of hardship and thrifty with one's money. You spent money only when you really had to. My late father would never understand why I, as an adult would purchase the things I did. And he was astonished when I purchased multiples of the same items. As he had grown up, you bought something only when you needed it. Of course he did have one foot in the door when the United States entered the era of prosperity in the mid-1950s while he was still a young man. That is when he purchase luxury items, but rarely, such as a radio, a new watch, and a black and white television. In his generation, you kept and used items until they were worn out and could not be repaired. I understood this and felt sympathy for him. But the generations that came after me, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z, are far more spendthrift than my Boomer generation ever was.

In my opinion this was made during the Great Depression, which ended around 1939 with USA entering WW2, the Government paid a small wage to movie and film makers to keep people employed, entertained and quite a bit of propaganda too.

@Sweet Pea Why are you being such a disgustingly negative jerkwad about it?
      1. You don't know that the mother doesn't work. You barely see her at all. Even if she doesn't work, you make it sound SO easy to just go out and get a job at any time. I've been trying for well over a year with no success, and the job market was MUCH worse back when this cartoon was made.
      2. For all you know, those kids CHOSE to go out and look for firewood, or were doing so on their way home from school. The kids already demonstrated how loving and considerate they are by how they treat each other and their mother. You could learn a lot from them about being a decent human being.
      3. Their mother cried because she felt guilty for not being able to feed her kids better. Nobody "forced" the boy to "comfort" her. You should be far more disgusted by the thought of the mother NOT crying and the boy NOT trying to cheer her up. Why would you want people to NOT have compassion for each other?
      4. You know damn well that those children are not even remotely supposed to represent abuse victims. Hell, not even victims of neglect, as the mother clearly loves them and is very obviously starving herself in order to feed them. You should be ashamed of yourself for your attitude. If you're trying to be funny, you failed MISERABLY.

You don't really think about it when you're a kid, it's only when you're an adult that you realize the mother gave her children the only food they had without ever eating a bit for herself, or that she's noticeably very thin, even compared to her children. You don't understand why she's crying when the boy says he's still hungry. You don't appreciate the mother's love and devotion to her children until you're much older and can fully understand everything that's happening.
Also, the fact that it's obvious the townsfolk are leaving firewood out for the kids to pick up because they know things are tough for them and are trying to help. They may not have even realized how bad off they were until they went to see their children's mother after the children were in bed . . .
The little boy poking himself with a fork at the end after they both stop eating for a moment because they think it might still be a dream still gets me . . . They can't believe it, that this feast and the toys and all the nice things are for them . . .

I've seen this cartoon tons of times since my mom first bought it as a $1 Christmas cartoon compilation VHS when I was 8 (and now have it on DVD with a bunch of other older ones - actually stumbled upon this while looking for old songs from Halloween cartoons) and never realized the wood was purposely being left for them. Still catching things from it almost 30 years later. Go figure.
*As an added bonus, check out the obvious "blooper". When they go to sleep the girl's green dress is hanging in between the two beds. When they first wake up it's not there, and then when they show the guys hiding outside their bedroom door it's hanging there again. :)

On UA-cam a few years back, a young, educated Mexican woman explained Mexico's 60 mil population this way. 10 mil are in the extremely wealthy to well-to-do class. 10 mil are in the upper middle class. 10 mil are living securely in the middle-middle class. 10 mil are living okay in the lower middle class and working class jobs with good pay. The last 20 mil are the impoverished Mexicans eking out a living, from poorly-paid working class jobs to the underemployed, unemployed, and indigent. It is largely from this group that the desperate seek a better life in the U.S. There are always those from the higher classes going to the U.S. for even better opportunities, school, marriage, etc. It's not meant to be a criticism but to explain it better to those outside of Mexico that things aren't bad for everyone, just for those in the bottom of the social economic ladder. This is meant to overturn the stereotype that every Mexican is desperate to emigrate to the U.S. Actually, most don't because they're doing either very well or okay.

Mother was born in 1926, and was raised with her sister and two brothers by their mom, who had to leave a perverted and abusive man behind. They were very poor, no plumbing, carried water from the river, and kerosene lamps for lighting. Mother used to tell about how sad Grandmother was when she had hardly enough for a Christmas chicken. She wanted a gift for each of the kids, but ended up buying, through the (Montgomery Ward?) catalog, one set of china doll dishes to be shared by the girls. Imagine her surprise when the package arrived, and there were 2 sets of doll dishes. She was so thankful to God, and the girls enjoyed them for many years. I still have one little milk pitcher.

Anything to stop his mother from crying when she had had nothing at all to eat. Look at the photos of the Depression that are readily available on line. Look at the endlessly deep hopelessness in the eyes of the adults, who are desperate to give their children even the minimum. While the Fleischers were telling the children viewing their cartoon a happy fairy tale, they were being very didactic towards the adults sitting next to their kids in the theater before the Three Stooges short and the main feature came on. "If you have a way to help the poor, do so. Can you live with yourself while hungry little children are being more selfless than you?"

When I first watched this, I wondered about what happens after the kids feast. I've accepted that in my head cannon that not only are the three men related (perhaps brothers due to the similarities) but that the baker falls in love with the mother and therefore he marries her and they go to live with him, and when they get older, they work in their uncles toy store and market, as well as their new stepfathers bakery. So that their Dreamland never ends. The little boy doesn't even have to poke himself with a fork ever again.

Maybe because I was an overtly sensitive child, but even at 7 years old (upon seeing this cartoon for the first time) I knew what had happened when the mother gave the last bit of food around, and there wasn't any more for seconds. The way the son and daughter saw that their mother couldn't and broke out in tears, the son stood up and said it was alright, that really gets to you. I saw the ending as such a happy one and one to aspire to. It is a great animated masterpiece on solidarity and the importance of it. Which is why I wonder today why United States being such a great wealthy nation that it is doesn't practice solidarity the way Nordic countries do. Instead of using the budget to kill people all that trillions could be use resourcefully by properly housing, clothing, feeding and educating each and every citizen within the nation. This cartoon had a direct impact on me as a kid growing up on the importance of looking after each other. It is why I do what I do at work helping as much as I could, even at the expense of getting myself into trouble at times, because I want to protect those around me and who I sincerely do care about. We are all connected to one another whether we want to admit it or not... we are all part of this world, so lets try to make it as less painful for each other. That is what I got from this cartoon. Even as a kid with disabilities this was clear as day. I don't know why normal people have a hard time knowing this until they are adults who keep practicing such a system that causes these hardships. Anyways this is such a throwback into my childhood. Thank you for uploading this.

The fact that the mother gave everything she could to her kids makes me think of my own ma and everything she did and still does for me and my siblings. Natalie. D What got me the most was the ending which I can adlib:
      Girl: "Are we still asleep?"
Boy: "Only 1 way to find out (Pokes himself with a fork) OUCH!"
You don't see charitable acts like in this cartoon too often anymore and that's the worst part of it

I've seen this before probably 30 years ago now. It's one of those cartoons we've probably all seen at some point then forgot about it until stumbling upon it again. The scene of them eating the giant ice cream is what dug up the old memory.

Growing up, my family struggled and we regularly accepted a "Christmas Basket" of groceries from our local church since it helped us to save money for other things we needed. We "got by" but money was always in short supply.
Now I'm retired and, thanks to having had a government job, I have a reasonably good pension and don't have to struggle to pay bills. But I have not forgotten living in a house where only one room (the kitchen) was regularly heated, and that was by the fire in the wood-burning stove.
When you have more than enough money, you have an obligation to share some of your excess with those in need. That's my opinion at least.
(I practice what I preach, btw)

This cartoon is something I grew up watching on VHS. As an adult, I have more appreciation and understanding of this.
I teared up when the little boy said he was still hungry, and the mom started crying, and then he tried to make her feel better.❤️😢
Thank you for uploading this. ❤️
