It really is ironic that Disney wanted the sequels to be THEIR Star Wars franchise and instead it ended up being the Mandalorian for them.

Short story: the prequels Aged Better because they had redeeming qualities like a good story, lots of new ideas, a good side show and good continuity with the original trilogy. Sadly the Sequels have none of this and there’s is very little attempt right now from Disney to do anything with them, plus it’s Harder to like something that generally didn’t bring much new stuff and just retold the same story but worse.
Just because the prequels aged well doesn’t mean the sequels will too and I doubt they ever will.
The prequels also did great worldbuilding. While some people didn't like I, I liked the politics they showed.
The prequels make Palpatine a fricken genius. He was the true devil. Playing two sides while gaining more and more power until he had enough to establish an empire.
The prequels made me invested in Star Wars. The disobey trilogy left a bad taste in my mouth and I ignore them completely
Don't forget that the prequel era was enhanced by Clone Wars TV series. I don't see the Resistance era having the same success.

Learning that you are in your mid 40s was far better of a plot twist than anything in the sequel trilogy

He’s stated multiple times before that he saw episode VI in theaters, which means he was at least 3 or 4 in 1983 at minimum.
One thing I like about you, Thor, is that even though you are anti-sequel, you're never angry and hateful (unless you're really good at hiding it, like a certain Chancellor we know). You made good arguments, with both in-story and irl points. Your arguments were well structured and researched, and you don't resort to name-calling and insults. You're the complete opposite of what the sequel lovers (the angry ones) and Lucasfilm employees say the "sequel haters" are like (except for the white male in their forty's XD).

@@JonO387 There are UA-cam channels that pretty much thrive on hate (for the SW sequels, Marvel movies, etc.) It took me a while to realize that they are fake as hell. The whole point is to give viewers that adrenaline rush that comes from rage. Which keeps them coming back, like any other drug.
as a fellow '77 baby, I still am not thrilled about the Prequels, however, The Clone Wars TV show was SO amazing that it has enhanced the Prequels to a spot that I hadn't appreciated before.

I don’t think those who dislike this trilogy now will ever like it. The reason people who initially didn’t like the prequels now are able to enjoy the prequels is because the Prequels expanded upon the original trilogy. The “sequels” is just a soft reboot and didn’t take any real risks compared to the prequels when it comes to the story that was told. There’s nothing truly striking or engaging in the films made under Disney. I’ve always been bored with the films, only Episode IX did I enjoy to the extent that it was quite ridiculous and somewhat entertaining with the space battles, but they had forced character interactions with those who never really met or interacted with much in the prior films. All in all, the prequels were made with love and had a story to tell by George Lucas, while I don’t really see much love in the making of the Disney made films by either director nor is the story engaging to the point of rewatching them over and over. In fact I’ve not rewatched any of the since Rise of Skywalker came out. That’s how uninteresting they are honestly. They have modern day political/social type stuff in them that within 10-15 years after they’ve been released will likely not age well and will be quite dated in probably the worst ways possible as they’re not the kind of political and social messages that have been present throughout history, which George Lucas incorporated in his films. His six films are timeless as they represent that history can repeat itself in ways that seem fresh and new, instead of just copy and past soft reboot type of style we saw with the corporate fiction films we saw under Disney.
Not really, the main reasons people disliked the prequels was the writing and Jar Jar Binks. It’s over time that people came to appreciate the prequels. Give it 20 years. Not 2. It will happen

Prequels had issues for sure but as mentioned by the original comment there was at least a central, coherent story added to them that also added to the overall Star Wars saga. Literally cannot say the same for the sequels, NOTHING new was introduced as far as world building/themes/storytelling, and whatever mess you WOULD call the “story” the sequels tried to tell in no way added to either of the other two trilogies nor the saga as a whole. If ANYTHING, the sequels took that main story and shit all over it
The sequels took risks where they shouldn't (how they handled the franchise legacy) and no risk where they should have (the story, world, new characters and anything/everything else)
I mean for me I still dislike the prequels. Just because TCW was able to fix some things theres still problems I have with the PT that is still there. Also TCW has some problems to me and it's really not the shows fault it's just things that the prequels did that I still don't like and it was brought over to TCW. I don't get how people felt that TCW saved the prequels but hey good for them. Thats why I feel there won't be a show to save the sequels for those who still don't enjoy it. It's you like them or you didn't to me.

The big deal-breaking issue with the sequel trilogy is how the New Republic and New Jedi Order are so quickly and effortlessy(barely on screen) taken out of the picture. It shows how little they cared about the achievements of the past heroes, and just wanted to have the “big empire in control of the galaxy vs. the small rebellion and their near extinct Jedi” all over again to pander to nostalgia. Not only do the worst things possible happen to these organizations and the people who helped create them, but it’s so rushed and easy that it doesn’t even make much sense that this would happen in the first place(it’s so messy that expanded material can only do so much besides making things worse; an inconsiderable blow to the world-building). This was double downed with Palapatine being behind it all as well as the tragic fate of the past heroes. There’s a good reason why so many are going as far as wanting these movies to not be canon(or at least the only canon), because they do not want this to be the final say of the main story of Star Wars.

This is one of the main reasons why i'm very much hoping that Jon & Dave's Mandoverse just totally ignores the sequels canon, and ignores those things, especially the New Republic.
And i think the main series that was going to do his way Favreau's Rangers show; i think some trouble (regarding pronouns in profiles) may have been deliberately on twitter, as a way to heavily attack Gina Carano, which ultimately led to her getting fired from Disney.
I believe Kathleen Kennedy (just like Darth Sideous) was the person responsible working behind the scenes, to get the sjws and twitter mob riled up and attack her the way they did. Reason why i believe this is because at that time, the presenter of the youtube channel "The Star wars Show" Krystina Arielle also did not have her pronouns in her twitter bio; and a number of other celebs and none of these people were attacked over it at all. Yet Gina Carano was.
I think the reason why Gina was so heavily attacked and got rid of was because she was rumored to be the lead star of Jon Favreau's Rangers Tv show, which would have explored and gave some insight into the "New Republic", but this would not have been the New Republic of the sequels canon. This is why Kennedy did what she did to basically sabotage Jon Favreau and his show, to stop that coming out, aleast for a while now.
Kennedy's upcoming Rogue Squadron movie directed by Patty Jenkins may actually be set some years before TFA, and show early time of the New Republic that was briefly seen in that movie.
This is one of the reasons why i hate the sequels because they destroy any elements that would create world-building. New Republic, Luke's Jedi Order.
What's great about Jon & Dave's Mandalorian series and Mandoverse in general is they are all about "world building" and Expanding what George already created with his 6-movie Saga.
The Disney trilogy is the result of Hollywood hubris. They thought they could buy Star Wars from Lucas and the series would just print money for them and they could just dole out movies to directors with half assed stories and the dumb nerd consumers would just eat it up.
Exactly. The Firsr Order and Snoke shouldn't even exist in the first place, let alone Palpatine coming back to live.
The sequels should've been about Luke's New Jedi Order and the New Republic, not those souless lore-less movies we got instead.

I believe this trilogy will go done as a step by step guide on how not to create films.
It will be lumped in with Highlander 2, Robocop 3 and late-stage slasher sequels. In other words, they will be relegated to the cesspool of pop culture history.

@@Theloneliestsavage Oh, Robocop 3 is bad. So bad. They wanted to make it into a child-friendly series, so it lacks all the violence of the first two movies.
I think the issue with the "This is this Generation's Star Wars" point is somewhat marred by the fact that they came out in the same era as The Clone Wars and the Mandalorian. It's true that this is the first interaction with the the franchise for some but that number is undercut by the era.

I've been a fan of Star Wars since it first came out in '77 (yep, I'm old). When the prequels came out, I was in my 30's and I had mixed feelings about them. The originals were lightning in a bottle and it's pretty much impossible to ever recapture that kind of magic. That being said, I still managed to appreciate and enjoy the prequels and see how the main story fit into the grand scheme of Star Wars lore. The sequels however, are another story. The missed opportunities, recycled ideas and the lack of character development within them was too much. Add to that, the way the legacy characters were handled and I felt like they were a slap in the face to old school fans and to George himself. So much more could have been done with the sequels if they had continued on from the originals with the New Republic facing some great existential threat such as some external force or even remnants of the Empire trying to resurge and take over under some threatening new leader. I honestly don't think there is any way that time is going to change how I feel about the sequels. The Mandalorian has been somewhat of a return to what I want from Star Wars to be sure. Perhaps some of the new shows coming will help build upon that to bring fans like me and others back but, for me at least, the sequels will forever be a dark stain on the history of the franchise.
I'm 58 and saw Star Wars 6 times that summer of 1977. I couldn't have written how I feel any better than you just did.
Ok so responding to the old people and getting in my opinions as a recent fan who is under 20 I actually enjoyed the sequals when I first watched them and I did think they were wierd at some points and I didn't like all of the desicions and plot (like Palpatine what was that about. It didn't make sense and I didn't like it one bit). I did however have a nice time watching because I am a big Reylo fan and for me the only thing that saves the sequals from me hating is the Reylo plot point. And on my second and third watchings my anger grew towards it more and more because I am able to recognize just how bad it really is. I still love it for the reylo ( Except for the end of TROS that broke me). I so wish the sequals were better they did star wars such a big injustice. Disney really ruined the bigger star wars universe. It's so hard for me to explain my hate and love for the sequal trilogy. In the shortest words I guess it would be that the only thing I liked was Rey and Kylo and everything else was awful. The character development, plot, story it was all really bad but I still watch it because of reylo. It is the potential that draws me in not the actual movies.

I saw a New Hope in the Cinema when it first came out, liked all the OT but I wasn't a huge fan, when the Prequels came out I was aware of the negative reaction of some fans but I liked them, to me they made the Star Wars universe bigger, I found the story interesting and they had some amazing scenes. I do of course now really love the OT. With the Sequels I watched the Force Awakens I had a mildly pleasant watching experience but almost as soon as I came out of the theatre and started thinking about it I was more and more turned off, realising how much it had undermined what went before, I only watched a fan edit of the Last Jedi which I suspect I'd much prefer to the real thing and even that was barely watchable. I realised the ST only pretended to be Star Wars. I was surprised when the Mandalorian brought me back into SW, also the Book of Boba Fett & love the Clone Wars. I'm indifferent about Rebels. In conclusion the Prequels deepened my love of Star Wars the Sequels turned me off, the point that Thor made I think is essential the problem with the Sequels is the Story and that is a fundamental problem, I can't see history being kind to them.

Whoever wrote this article clearly loves the Sequel trilogy and hopes that all Star Wars will one day do so as well. And so they came up with five reasons they like the Sequels, without ever really stopping to consider why some Star Wars fans dislike or even hate the Sequels to begin with
Yeah, it's like someone scarfing down a giant, steaming turd and then desperately trying to convince everyone else that the shininess and sprinkles the "chefs" added at last minute make the bad taste and foul breath it gives them worthwhile
When I heard that one of the reasons was the sequels provide a solid conclusion, I almost went to vomit in my toilet.
These were 5 terrible arguments well 4 terrible and one that only makes sense because its sadly true. For this Generation YES this is their Star Wars. But for this reason alone I feel really bad for current Gen fans. Lets face it You folks got shafted and just because its YOURS doesn't mean its good or loveable. I pity them for this reason in fact.
@@mikepette4422 these have been the only Star Wars movies I've gotten to see on cinema I'm 17 so I'd consider me this generation. And to say , I don't think I'll never come to like TLJ. I may rewatch TROS OR TFA , but not TLJ. I may especially watch TROS for the Palpatine lines lol

Being the same age as you (born in 77), Star Wars was life for me growing up. Even in high school we would have the VHS playing in the background whenever my friends and I were hanging out. We even spent the night in parking lots so we would be the first in line to see the Prequels in the theater. The sad thing is, is that I will never love or even like the Sequels. After watching TFA in the theater I thought they could have done better, but I still had hope. After TLJ, the sequels were done. I only saw TROS in the theaters once on principle because it was Star Wars. Seeing Mark Hamill's face trying to warn us about what was happening still breaks my heart. There is absolutely no way they can fix this for me and I believe for many in my generation of Star Wars fans.
I'll never forget getting in line with my brother at 6AM for The Phantom Menace tickets, which went on sale at 2PM, and not being even close to the first ones in line... Anyway, like you after The Force Awakens I still had hope. It wasn't the best, or what I was hoping for, but I understand what they were going for with it. And I figured as long as the next two films in the trilogy delivered I'd be okay with it in the end. Needless to say, but that didn't exactly happen....
@Skeletor Mr. Plinkket’s videos are awful they intentionally misinform the audience so many times it’s the incredibly, and the guy who made the Videos has a disturbing hatred for George Lucas which goes way future than not liking 3 of his movies

an unhealthy hatred of Lucas, I once saw a podcast where he accused George of being an untalented hack, said American Graffiti and THX-1138 sucked, and to top it all off he accused Lucas of not actually creating the OT, completely ignoring the fact he spent a decade writing all 3 and the years of hard work and passion Lucas put in those movies
@@thorskywalker I'm a year older. I remember working at an internet provider at the time. A bunch of us who worked 3:30 - 11pm decided on a whim to see the midnight showing of TPM on opening night and we were fortunate to get seats, though those seats were scattered all over the theater. We were so excited, each one of at some point on the way over exclaimed "we're going to see Star Wars!". This was the experience I supposed that my dad had going to Star Wars in 1977. Anyway, we walked out of the theater a lot less excited. -- I was excited after seeing TFA as it had been so long since I'd seen a Star War film or any film in a theater for that matter. It wasn't until the next movie, leaving the theater after TLJ that I was pissed off for the first time after watching a Star Wars movie. Disney lost me on any of their movies going forward. I didn't bother seeing TROS in theaters, but I remember backhandedly liking it because it pissed off the poor misguided souls who liked and championed TLJ. Then I managed to pirate TROS and watch it. I dare say that TROS is an objectively WORSE movie than TLJ! Ships that don't know what direction is up? Horses on the outside of a starship? Lando shows up and has a daughter, only it's not his daughter because edits. The Goonies dagger that shows where to go on remnants of a Death Star that clearly didn't leave any debris behind, but Disney just didn't care, they wanted to milk the cash cow, and they ended up killing it in the process. They tried cramming two movies into TROS to make up for the DISTASTER that TLJ left the franchise in, and what resulted was an absolute Clusterf%$#. If there ever is another Star Wars movie released in theaters I won't go on opening night. I won't go at all unless I hear TONS of word of mouth from actual Star Wars fans that they saw the movie and that it was good.
Same here, right down to age. It's really difficult to quantify just how much Abrams and Johnson shat all over a defining aspect of my youth.
I just realized I haven’t watched the original trilogy since before TRoS was in theaters… That fact that I don’t have the urge to watch the whole trilogy once a year anymore makes me super sad. I’d have a special week where I would watch the OT and the Prequels and reminisce of better times, but now it’s hard to not think of where they end up. I find the whole “forget the past, kill it if you have to” and the real world adage “those that forget the past are doomed to repeat it” very ironic as that sums up these retreads of the OT. The fact that 30 years from now you could literally just have an old washed up Rey alone on an island while an even more Mary Sue comes in to replace her with no fanfare or training and then ends up killing Palpitine… again, because he’s just alive… again, is the legacy of Sequel trilogy, and unending cycle doomed to repeat itself because of a stupid message all round. I used to be very angry with KK, JJ, and Rian but now all I feel is disappointment of what could have been and never will be. Even if Filoni and Jon wipe the slate clean the fact that Disney wasted the chance to have all of the old characters together again for one last adventure, and to hand off the reins to the new generation for a whole new trilogy of films like all of the promotional material for 7 said they were going to do, is just going to leave bad taste in my mouth. We all, including those that think that they are the bestest films, deserved better. If you think these films are good, think of how great they would’ve been if they showed respect for the material and included all of the fans. All I know is I’m never touching another KK production again, film or book series; or Rian’s imaginary trilogy if that ever materializes. With Bad Batch, The Book of Boba Fett, Kenobi, Visions, Ahsoka, The Mandalorian, and all the future projects out of KK’s control I hope to heal the hurt in my heart and again feel the urge to watch the OT and the Prequels of Star Wars and remember that feeling of the first time I ever saw them; true, simple enjoyment. One thing that helped me get back into the Original Trilogy. 4K. Watching 4K77 was amazing, and 4K83 was good too. I don't think 4K80 is out yet, at least it wasn't earlier this year after I got my 4K TV. I highly recommend sitting down and watching either the 4K restorations or Harmy's Despecialized editions of the three OT films.
I sure like The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. They're the kind of movies I simply enjoy re-watching.
Honestly, I think you should just ignore the sequels and focus on what you really love about Star Wars. Just remove whatever star wars content you don't like from your own personal headcanon.
@@fanana6193 you’re right, and that’s what I’ve started doing. It’s just watching this video made me think of when the last time I saw the OT was and it shocked me that I hadn’t thought of it in awhile.
It's required a very particular skillset to ruin a magnificent story retroactively, the sequels managed that, anything is just meaningless because our heroes managed nothing done.
And that's sad...
The fact that there was at least 1 scene filmed with Han, Luke & Leia together in the sequel trilogy, but left out, tells you all you need to know about how much they valued those characters. The fact that, after Han's death, Leia goes and hugs Rey instead of Chewie, shows the degree of that disconnect...

The prequels surprised many with the choices they made, we are starting with a 9 year old? And a Jar Jar? But they never invalidated the characters that were to come next.
The sequels didn’t respect EP 1-6 and told their own story and only used the original characters for marketing. There is no fixing that.
They respected episodes 1-6. Far more than most fans do
One reason to sum it all up. This is the trilogy that spat in the face of the legacy of Star wars.

I remember when people thought the sequels would be "the salvation of Star Wars." But The Rise of Skywalker makes The Phantom Menace look like Citizen Kane.
TLJ makes the Ewok films look like the Godfather.

Thing is with the sequels, there's nothing to look back on. It's just a watered down re-hash of the original trilogy. There's not really any interesting lore to build off of. It's just the Empire vs Rebels all over again

My father and I watched every sequel movie in theaters. ( They were my first Starwars theater experience other than the animated clone wars film. Just imagine my disappointment.)
However my father has no recolection of the last two movies in the trilogy (and he's a die hard OT starwars fan.) The movies are forgettable and boring, I only wish I could forget them.
Well, that's not really true, is it? I mean, The Force Awakens isn't a 'watered down re-hash of the original trilogy'. Neither is The Last Jedi.
@@CulturalMarxist4985 Are you being sarcastic? The Force Awakens follows the key beats of A New Hope in every act, it even ends with having to blow up another Death Star. And the Last Jedi contains a Jedi who visits an old Jedi Master while their friends are pursued by the Empire, now where have I heard that story before...the films are devoid of creativity, originality and vision.

The prequels, even if you didn't like them, had an undeniable amount of heart put into it's narrative. The story and characters were consistent, there was a clear villain and end game, and everything clearly fit into the Star Wars universe.
I felt like I was in the minority of "likers" back when the prequels came out, and I haven't changed my mind. But I think you hit the nail in the head when you said that the problem with the prequels is the execution of the story while the problem with the sequels is the story itself
In my humble opinion, the only thing I needed for the sequels to be a legitimate part of the story was for Anakin to show up at the end and help defeat the Emperor. And that didn't happen and a cartoon can't fix that.

I wrote a "What if" in my comment section, the dialogue between Anakin and Ben Solo on the Death Star wreckage.
At the end Rey Palpatine buries Anakin's lightsaber into the sands of Tatooine, as a final "fuck you" from Darthleen Kennedy.
The emperor was already dead in rotj. Why you want him back? Anakin story was finished in rotj. This why Sequels should've been a 1000 year time skip from the originals and prequels. Than we can actually see if these people can actually make their own stuff instead of ripping off the ot.

The prequel trilogy enhances the original trilogy and the greater Star Wars universe. The sequel trilogy undermines both trilogies and adds very little to the overall Star Wars universe.
they legit add nothing and take place over the span of a year lol, all of the interesting stuff happens before the sequels, (even then i still disagree with the story) but wasnt put on screen because of not wanting luke to be the centerpiece
The prequels don’t enhance anything, they are still as terrible as they ever were. Marsha Lucas was right about them as much as she’s right about these abominations.

I’m a Prequel fan myself and I will admit. I roll my eyes at some of the stuff in the films. That doesn’t take my enjoyment away. George Lucas had an excellent vision and story. His character arcs are interesting, the only issues were the dialogue and the execution. Overall story and themes were great. The Clone Wars TV Show was a Bonus. Most of the fans (even if they didn’t like the Prequels) still love and appreciate George Lucas because he was expanding his universe and was adding new and interesting ideas. The Disney Trilogy is hated by fans because it had no character build up and no story. It was really just a soft reboot but with hints of modern day politics. This is why I hate reboots because they’re not creative. They’re an insult to the Original Film.
The core problem with the sequels and it's just a fact that it completely undermines both the PT and OT trilogies. It says flat out that these heroes we rooted for were ultimately failures, their accomplishments undone, and the Skywalker bloodline has been effectively snuffed out so in that sense, Palpatine ultimately won because no matter how much or often she says it, Rey is not and will never be a Skywalker, she is a Palpatine. HIS linage will continue!
The story of Star Wars is that ultimately good triumphs in the end. So in that lense the Disney Trilogy spits in the face of that by giving us what amounts to the darkest timeline where everything our heroes fought and sacrificed for were ultimately undone, Han and Leia having a failed marriage, their son killing or converting all of Luke's students to the dark side because Luke didn't have two brain cells to rub together and forgot everything he learned in Empire and Jedi, etc.
And ontop of all that, they gave all of their accomplishments to Rey who didn't earn them and was THE BESTEST JEDI EVAR without any training and attempts to justify it only make her more of a Mary Sue character.

I mean take the lightsaber combat for example. If it weren't for the dynamic fast paced choreographed saber combat from the prequels, we wouldn't have gotten the 7 saber fighting styles that was expanded upon within the lore. On top of that, the prequels were the ones that introduced the concept of the Sith and the rule of two from episode 1. That's the reason why we got the old republic where it told how the conflict began from the je'daii order. Ironically some prequel haters loved that part of the EU... Without even knowing that the prequels were in fact responsible for expanding on that.

Prequels issues were point problems with the dialog, overall the story made a certain amount of sense and didn't completely wreck the OT, sure some contradictions but overall it flowed well with the OT. could it have been better? absolutely. However I think most people who don't like those movies don't mind the ideas behind the movies being the backstory to the OT. Sequels on the other hand absolutely break some of the lore and story in the OT and even the prequels. Palpatine's return undermines the final battle in the return of the jedi and his ability to conjure the final order out of thin air undermines all the trickery he pulled in the prequels. If he could retreat to exagul and construct a fleet of death star star destroyers why would he even need to bother with the clone wars? It comes down to a lack of respect for what came before.

It´s painfully obvious Palpatine was shoehorned into the last movie but wasn´t supposed to be there originally.
According to some leaks Son of Mortis was supposed to be there.
And after he was changed for Palpatine, Anakin´s Force ghost and some other significant Force ghosts were supposed to take him down. There were scenes filmed with actors in costumes but the scenes were never put into the final cut and they were replaced with mere voices of the Jedi.

I dunno if Palpatine’s return, in and of itself, totally undermines ROTJ. Sure it’s poorly done in the Disney sequels but I don’t hear those same criticisms for EU Legends Dark Empire, where he came back with world destroyer ships.
It’s probably less the ingredients and more the combination, perhaps 🤔 more so the chefs.
I’m not defending the Disney sequels. They were derivative and divisive, poorly executed and written like hate mail to boot-during a volatile time, culturally. The disdain they get is we’ll earned, but some of the ideas they ripped off from Legends could’ve been better if properly executed by the right people.

Are you kidding me? Everyone is written as stupid as fuck, including Palpatine, so everything will fall into place for the OT. Even the rise of the Empire makes no sense. We see no suffering in the important sections of the Republic so why would they wanna become an empire? Because Palpatine said the Jedi tried to kill him? Why would they think these guys who have had next to no involvement with politics suddenly wanna take over? I understand Lucas was trying to compare this all to the Patriot Act and Bush but it it's more like he's trying to do the whole Hitler's rise to power but failing to understand how he got to power. The conditions weren't right for him to just take over and everyone being overjoyed. Had we seen the Republic being brought to a shadow of what it was like we saw with Germany after WW1 then you could see the people looking to a charismatic speaker who promises to bring them back to their glory.
This was a nicely measured breakdown. And you really nailed the totally different issues between the Sequels and Prequels, though one thing I think you didn't touch on was also the starkly opposite media reactions. From the first film, the media was openly and viciously hostile to the Prequels (as much as people complain about the fandom menace, Jake Lloyd and Ahmed Best were harassed by the Media, like late Night Comedians, a lot more than common fanboys). On the other hand, the Sequels were way overly praised by the media for very obvious click-bait reasons, b/c being a 'fan' of general pop culture was quite profitable in the 2015 blogosphere. The environments around these trilogies are just so diametrically different, it's not worth comparing. One last point, I DO think a show fleshing out the First Order-Resistance war would benefit the sequels. It's underappreciated just how much TCW retconned the prequel films, from storylines to visuals to (and especially) characters. Anakin and Padme in TCW are entirely different characters from their film counterparts and there are very rarely complaints about that. This is to say, I think a TCW-style show for the Sequels could be very beneficial in bringing life and interest back into the era. But I'm not convinced Disney is willing to put down the massive investment that George did with TCW. Disney's only real attempt at replicating this strategy, Rebels, was abandoned by the third season and they smothered Resistance in the cradle. Bad Batch sadly exists to mine prequels nostalgia. For a Sequels animation to work, they're going to have to be bold, something the Disney era hasn't yet proven capable of with this franchise.
the intresting thing with episode 1's inital release on cinema, critics actually loved it and even praised it but after that it became downhill reception wise some point when fans watched it, It's a weird blur looking back. with the sequels now i don't think very few a pointing out how little content they are given, yeah the rey movie is coming but that's about it (some comics have been here or there) but despite box office numbers you would think they would have pushed a lot more sequel based content but in truth not really unless you consider mando or even boba but honestly at this point there is more ties to OT and even PT to that show then the Sequels other then some obscure nods
The prequels told a great story that was poorly executed at times, but was still cohesive with the OT. Then The Clone Wars did a great job of better fleshing out the story of the PT, so fans who didn't like them initially can still appreciate them more, and some may have changed their minds and do like them now. The sequel trilogy is another story. It was a complete disservice to both preceeding trilogies with terrible character arcs and fractured, incoherent storytelling. None of those things will age well.
I wouldn't use the term "poorly executed" with the prequels at all personally. Sure, the way the dialogue is written isn't going to be winning the academy award for best screenplay, but it never sounded off or out of place even if it came across as somewhat corny
Not saying the dialogue was poorly executed, some of it was just awkward or bad. What was poorly executed was some aspects of the plot. They started Anakin too young, leaving only two films to showcase his fall to the darkside, and only ROTS really pushed it. The romance between Anakin and Padmé was rushed, awkward and unbelievable. The story of the trilogy had devastating effects on relationships that just weren't given enough time to be fleshed out. Thankfully, The Clone Wars show really helped out a lot with this.

No, some of the dialogue, especially between Anakin and Padme, was just bad. And bad dialogue can really take you out of a scene. But its not like it killed the films or anything. The prequels are still my favorite trilogy.
I did notice, though, that a bit of clumsy retconning had to be done to reconcile the prequel trilogy with the '90s novels. The worst example was that of Boba Fett, who was originally supposed to be Jaster Mereel, a disgraced lawman exiled from the world of Concord Dawn (and who, ironically, given what eventually became of his father, initially aspired to become an Imperial stormtrooper). Then, after the prequels revealed that he was a clone of an actual Mandalorian who was trained to be a bounty hunter from childhood, and also changed his ethnicity from faux-British/American to faux-Pacific Islander, Boba Fett and Jaster Mereel had to be rewritten as two different people, with Fett merely having adopted Mereel's history as his own as part of a Joker-like strategy to cloud his origin story. I came to accept that, but I still think it would have been more interesting if Fett had remained a fringe character just as mysterious as Han Solo had been.
Not long after TFA, there was this thought in the back of my head that said “Doesn’t this undo the achievements of the past heroes in a pretty rushed and disrespectful way?” That bothered me a bit, but I shrugged it off and awaited what would come next. However, that thought would only grow until by the time of TROS(the First Order’s easy takeover of a new republic that apparently had no existence outside of its capital, Luke, and Palpatine had doubled down on undoing things), I had fully embraced that thought and fully disavowed myself from the sequel trilogy.
That was my thought after watching The Force Awakens and it was going to cause problems for the rest of the trilogy. Basically all the world building and set up that TFA had to do would have to be done by Episode 8, not to mention how 8 had to fix TFA's mistakes... I mean answer it's mystery boxes. Basically 8 had to do a lot of retconning to get things back on track and it didn't do anything it needed to do. It didn't try to continue the story, or set up the next movie. It didn't get the story back on track, or even follow through with what TFA set up. It basically ruined everything even further.
I never had that thought. Mine was, ok they're just going with the WWI - good times - WWII angle.

I'm with you on the feelings of TFA. I enjoyed it on my initial viewing but after the fact realized it caused a lot of problems that would have to be resolved in the sequels, so I had high expectations of TLJ. Unfortunately TLJ not only did not correct any issues I saw with TFA it instead seemed to actively try to derail any story trajectories set up by TFA. I didn't even bother seeing ROS, it was clear by that point that LucasFilm had no plan or vision for their films and expected nostalgia and brand recognition alone to carry them to success.
Same if a sequel only tears down the original to make room for itself, it does not deserve to exist
The reason the prequels will fare better in the long run is because unlike the sequels, the prequels respect what came before and their screw-ups were a result of botched execution. The sequels problems are that they had no regards for what came before them.

Something that amazes me about the discussion of the Prequels these days is that people are discovering and finding out new insights about them. A couple months ago I was watching video about why the Droids get more humourous during the trilogy and it's mentioned how Palpatine's minions go from being Droids to Clones to just Regular people joining the Imperial military. Now everyone in the Galaxy were his droids.
I don't see the same level discussion about the Sequels and I don't think we'll see it in the future. I think their biggest problem is that they weren't planned as a continuation of the story and not had the thought and care put into them that George Lucas made for his movies. In the end they were a cash grab and the lack of planning also meant these movies were incoherent on a narrative and thematic level.
As others have pointed out the story of the Prequels do more to expand the story and the stakes we first see in the Original Trilogy. We see what was lost in the Prequels and what it is Han, Luke, Leia, Lando and the rest of the rebellion is fighting for. Then to have all those gains they sacrificed so much to make be arbitrarily thrown out the window before and during TFA just to reset the board.
This is why I take such issue with TFA. The Prequels warn us how we can fall from grace. How a glorious and free society can fall to ruin and tyranny. The Original Trilogy is the story that brings hope. That tells us we can fix things we can make a better world, but we have to be willing to fight and sacrifice for it. The Sequels should have been about how to rebuild and secure the gains you make in the aftermath of a conflict that successfully toppled a tyrannical regime and to show us how to avoid sliding back because rebuilding is often more perilous than the Revolution. Instead everything is back to the way it was Empire versus Rebels and our heroes are all worse for ware. From the get go with TFA the message I get is that no matter how hard you fight, no matter how much you sacrifice, evil will just come back take over again and make your life worse. Fighting it is a pointless endeavor. Why shouldn't I expect to see another Empire come back and topple the New New Republic with Palpatine still being the one pulling the strings, because that's what should be expected after watching the Sequels. Why would Rey, Finn and Poe fare any better when their journey is just a pale imitation of Han, Luke and Leia's. Instead of hope we're left with nihilism.

the problem was that they subverted expectations and deconstructed set pieces for its own sake, rather than leading to something. they thought playing around with the norm worked in lieu of actual storytelling, then blamed the fans when it failed. "i am your father" came out of nowhere, but worked, and they were able to work around that. luke tossing aside what is basically a treasured family heirloom at that point was a cheap gag that did nothing to further the story

I was born in 01. Sadly I didn't get to grow up seeing the prequels in theaters, but I was old enough to see the clone wars movie in theaters. Smoke's "Darkness rises and light to meet it" monologue stuck with me. But not because it was memorable. It stuck with me because it showed how little the idiots who greenlit the sequel trilogy understood how the Force actually works.
The series has made it painfully obvious since Empire that one doesn't automatically master the Force because their (insert relative here) were powerful Jedi. Mastery of the Force comes through intense training
Yeah, the only two memorable setpieces of Sequel Trilogy are the riding though the casino in TLJ and the lightsaber fight in the rain in RoS; given their abysmal quality of exectution, it's a bitter irony because those are the only setpieces not referencing *anything* from both trilogies.
As the target audience for the OT (born in 1973), I found the prequels hit and miss (but I felt that about ROTJ as well). There is a lot to love, but a lot to roll your eyes at. On balance, I enjoyed them and have rewatched them a ton of times. The sequel trilogy? Nah, they're terrible movies with a completely broken story full of asspulls. They're the Batman and Robin of modern cinema.
probably does not help their case that while the prequels look better in hindsight, the sequels look worse in hindsight. while the prequels had questionable scriptwriting and story decisions, they added a lot to worldbuilding, and the story itself is great in theory. the sequels constantly contradict themselves and the universe they live in, with actions clearly being done to further the plot rather than having plausible reasons for taking place. special mentions go to the TV shows dedicated to each trilogy: clone wars was beloved and considered by many to have redeemed the trilogy. resistance did so poorly it only had two seasons, and is largely forgotten nowadays, both by the producers and the consumers
I think you're right. I've seen people, including critics, who praised TFA and even TLJ, come back and change their minds far more than hating those movies and then loving them like the prequel group. Even Jeremy Jahns, a movie critic, has come back and has changed his mind on TLJ and sequel trilogy in general. He says it happens a lot, but most critics won't admit it.

I will never accept the sequels as part of the Star Wars saga. They're a messy juxtaposition of scenes and ideas, stitched together by a corporation who looked at how successful the original trilogy was, and sought to soft reboot it. Just look at the lack of sequel product produced by companies, including Hasbro. TROS was the first Star Wars film to NOT have a dedicated toy line and that speaks volumes!

I am one of many prequel era kids/adolescents who liked the prequel trilogy when I was younger, but saw past the pew pew pew of it all as I got older. If I came to dislike my generation’s Starwars and we are going off faulty logic, people will come to hate the sequels *more* over time lol.
Based on toy sales, I doubt the sequels pulled in many children. It pulled in the Twilight, shipping crowd, but those people are fickle and they abandoned the franchise when it didn't validate their reylo fantasies.
I was the same way - a sure fire prequels baby, who grew to understand their flaws as I got older. I WILL admit, though, in the last year or so, I've gained a new appreciation for them, especially for TPM.
I’m a prequels baby too, and I did watch a lot of the OT on VHS too. (God I’m old) Loved the effects as a kid, got older and saw through that and noticed the faults, got older still and realized that for all the faults it at least tried to do the OT justice. It told a story in a decent way, expanded on what we knew, and led into the OT nicely.
The ST on the other hand, a dumpster fire that I will walk away from. I only got through TLJ and ignored ROS completely. I had hoped that the problems would be fixed by the finale, not made worse. Corporate going after the fans didn’t help anything.

Same I grew up with prequels and loved then grew up with the sequels in theaters at the time thought they were both amazing but know I realize that they all mostly suck aside from the premace of the prequels and film making of the first two sequels along with the way they handled Luke in tlj and the characters of the prequels mostly from clone wars

@@mediadetective6104 I thought Anakin’s transition from light to dark was done well (but you are right it was made better by The Clone Wars). I also thought Palpatine’s rise to power was well done. Having someone manipulate and take control from the inside is much more interesting than a Thanos style take over and also explains why resistance might be smaller than one might expect. But I also like political theory so I can see where people didn’t like it.
The only thing the prequels really have over the sequels is better lightsaber duels. That's why I liked the prequels more as a little kid but action isn't everything in movies.

Yep. I recently decided to try my hand at writing High Republic fan fiction, and I'm 98% sure I've already done more research than JJ Abrams ever did. That man just does not plan a damned thing. (first fan-fic ever, so the going is slow and I'm sure it will suck, but it's fun to try)

I think something that needs to be taken into account and often isn’t as to why the sequel trilogy seems much more hated than those they came before it , it’s social media - and the internet as a whole.
The net was around when the prequels dropped but we were still on dial up and not many people I know even had it. Fast forward to now and everyone has a voice and an opinion which they’re very quick to spread , meaning there’s way more opinions to read and more reviews to go through. I’ll put it this way, I didn’t hate the sequels I just knew they could have been much better, but I enjoyed them. If the internet wasn’t around I would literally have no idea how globally hated or disliked they even were. So I would be ignorant to the fan base opinion. And unfortunately negativity breeds negativity, so although I was ok with the sequels it wasn’t until reading so maybe negativity about them that I started to dislike them a little more because of the arguments other people had made against them that I hadn’t considered. I think this in part is why the sequels will go down as the fans least favourite, because they were released at a time when everyone and anyone could talk about them and we could all read about it instantly. A Saturation of opinions maybe, and that can drag your opinions down with it
I grew up in a very interesting era of Star Wars. My father grew up with the originals and hated the prequels. To this day, he still believes midichlorians and the idea of a chosen one fundamentally ruined the franchise and you know what? I don’t blame him for that. Me and my brother were too young to possibly understand how he felt, and in fact the only part we didn’t like in the prequels we just skipped, and it was the middle part of episode 2. We did get into The Clone Wars as it was coming out. I can’t quite express how much cooler the prequels look when you can go “oh look! That’s Kit Fisto there!”. And as we grew up, so did the show, and I feel that was a key part of why we continued to love it as we grew up.
The sequels do not have the same thing going for them in terms of a way to rope new people into them. They tried with Resistance, but that really did not go very well. Mandalorian is the closest comparison really, but I don’t think anything about it tied in to the sequels enough to boost peoples enjoyment of them. If anything, Mandalorian did its best to cater to The Clone Wars fans, and even retconned parts of the sequels. The sequels didn’t exactly leave themselves a chance to make long-term fans like the prequels did.
The prequels aged like wine, the sequels will age like milk.

It's the Mass Effect three affect. What's the point in checking out prequels when they lead into that same pile of garbage? And even if you want to consider Kenobi, I really do not care. I have the excellent John Jackson Miller book which I predict will be leagues above anything LF is doing right now.
The only thing that has me a bit interested in Star Wars Visions but that's the inner anime fan in me liking stuff like that. Other wise I really do not give a crap. Maybe, when/ if Kennedy leaves/ retires but until that day, my time is best spent consuming media I know is good. Stuff like Mushoku Tensei, Gundam and many other hidden gems out there.

Listen being born in 2000 and growing up as the prequel trilogy was unfolding, I think I definitely understand what Star Wars was to kids during the original trilogy. Star Wars was everywhere for me and my friends. So many toys, books, and video games.
I had extremely low expectations of the sequel trilogy, and was pleasantly surprised. For a blatant cash grab, the movies were pretty well made and fun to look at. I will probably never have a desire to watch them again, which is sad given how many times I've gone back to the other movies, but there's so much other Star Wars content out there to explore.
Not in a million year. Along with the problems of the storyline and character development, modern toxic politics were injected into it, taking us out of the experience. Top it all off with the attacks on the fans from Disney/Lucasfilm employees made this disaster unforgivable.

For me the Thrawn Trilogy books are the real sequels. People can call it legends all day because of an arbitrary decision made by a company, but if you think about it, everything made until the clone wars show is star wars as it was intended to be by George Lucas.

I enjoy approximately 5-10 minutes of TFA from Poe's and Finn's escape to getting away from Jakku. Other than that I have a deep, visceral dislike of these movies. There was never any justification for continuing the saga - it was already finished. A pointless mess of noise and flashy cinematography that never fitted the style of the other episodes.
I couldn’t even enjoy that because of how incompetent it showed the first order to be. Those two should never have been able to escape that easily. Sure there was the obligatory fire fight in the hanger and Po didn’t know he had to release the tie fighter to take off because he’d never flown one before, but how the hell did they even get to the hanger in the first place?
Firstly, Finn at that point was awol. During the whole scene I thought it was because he was avoiding reporting to Captain Phasma to get his blaster checked, but no, we learn later he already had it checked and was supposed to report for re-brainwashing or something, which Finn was shown to be terrified of. Like “I’ll take my chances trying to escape” terrified. And yet Finn is not only able to walk around with no escorts, he still has the clearance to get to the prisoner holding area of the ship.
That’s where the second problem is, typically when a military base has an area that holds prisoners, especially important ones being held for questioning (torture) like Po; Mr. most important pilot of the resistance who knows where the mcguffin is, it’s placed as far away from exits as you can get and should be behind multiple security checkpoints. You don’t want to make it easy for your prisoners to escape, or make it easy for people to break in/sneak in to get them out. At the very least there should have been guards in front of the door or a special access code.
So the first order does not keep track of its soldiers, just trusts them to show up for punishment when they prove to not be following orders, and has no security over their prisoners. How very intimidating this villainous organization it. And for a supposed evil authoritarian super military that the audience is told is so much worse and so much more powerful than the empire ever was, they’ve got some real issues with structure, organization, and oversight of their own military.
I’m supposed to believe they can do hostile take overs of whole planets and star systems? These people couldn’t run a lemonade stand.
@@rockchic733 Sure, you can pick those scenes apart as well, especially in terms of the lore. Of course the entire First Order never made any sense whatsoever - they are not the establishment or a ruthless bureaucracy like the Empire. They are a military cult that hates the New Republic - who would ever support them? Palpatine couldn't rise to power without manipulating the system and people, either.
The villains never made any sense, there was never going to be a satisfying way of including the legacy characters (but they managed to totally screw them up) and the leading 3 had some potential that was never developed, leaving us with caricatures. At least those few minutes of TFA didn't feel as wrong as the rest.
@@matthiasm4299 I agree those are the best scenes out of the whole trilogy just in terms of “least bad”, but I guess for me the quickest way to take me out of a story is bad world building. Not just regarding over all lore, but also the small scale of the characters immediate environment.
I just had the experience of my immersion being immediately broken in the first 10 minutes rather than getting the false hope of well written characters since my focus was drawn away from Finn and Po and toward the nonsense that was the first orders military set up. Kinda hard to appreciate what the hero’s are doing well when the bad guys are so cartoonishly bad at being bad guys.

@@matthiasm4299 Same, Star Wars has such an expansive universe and that’s such a large part of what got me into it that when I watched episode VII I was baffled at how small the universe suddenly felt. The movies were so closely honed in to what the main characters where doing that it didn’t establish much of anything outside of them. I’m not even really sure where the battle lines of New Republic controlled space vs First Order controlled space is. Where the hell are the bad guys getting all these resources to build planet sized battle stations that suck up the energy of the sun from? Doesn’t matter, didn’t it look cool though?
The prequels really did try to tell an incredible story, but sometimes fell short in the acting/dialogue. But what they were trying to do is actually incredible and The Clone Wars series was able to mine into the core of it in a way the films never were able to.
The Disney trilogy was a shameless money grab with no unified vision and no story to tell. That will not age well

I liked the trilogy when it came out. I was excited for TROS and I thought TLJ was one of the best Star Wars films…until I realized I couldn’t remember a thing I liked about it except for the shiny action…
The more I revisited them the more I realized I had been tricked by Nostalgic elements, the exact same plot as a New Hope, and they Retconned Palpatine’s death…
Everything the Originals stood for means nothing as long as they’re canon (which I personally don’t…) so I don’t think I could ever like a movie I was *Tricked* into liking because it was a ‘Star Wars Movie’.
I could see that there could be a former Sequels Lovers anonymous group, that could help people get over the trauma of having been tricked into thinking the Sequels actually were Star Wars movies.
After the way we were treated by the Sequel Trilogy's creators and fans, pure spite will keep me hating them forever. May Filoni and Favreau relegate them to a different timeline soon.

I was born about 20 years after you, Thor, and I still vividly remember pretending to be Luke Skywalker on the playground as a kid. Seeing how The Last Jedi massacred my childhood hero made me angry. I had never felt my blood boil while watching a movie before seeing Ep. VIII, and I have not felt that way since.

Getting the originals together was Rule #1 for Kathleen Kennedy "THAT THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN". Her intent for the Sequels was to DESTROY the Skywalker Legacy because she felt it embodied the Patriarchal Domination of Modern Society and she was going to do everything in her power to undermine and dismantle it and remake Star Wars in HER image. The movies make complete sense once you accept that fact. At least, they make sense from HER point of view. It doesn't make them GOOD. But they did attempt to do what she wanted. Now we, as fans can either accept that, or reject it utterly and demand that we are given the continuation of our Modern Mythos as it was intended! I choose the latter.
I think sequel hate will endure much longer than prequel hate.

I really REALLY wish that the Mandalorian and other shows like it would be able to do for the sequels what Clone Wars did for the prequels but that requires something very important that I don't believe they have over at Disney. The ability to introspect, see what they did wrong with the movies, and create solutions/explanations for the things that didn't work in the movie. Why does the First Order seem to have infinite resources, why is Rey so powerful without any training, how in any galaxy near or far did Luke turn into whatever character Mark Hamill played in the sequels? And I don't think they able or willing to do that.

First time I saw the prequels I thought they were amazing. Fist time I saw sequels I knew they were crap.
I'm pretty certain that many folks just mean that they have more nostalgia for the prequels than the sequels, which makes sense given that they were released first. It's doubtful that they suggest that the sequels are outright worse movies than The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, which are mostly mediocre movies when it comes down to it.

I think your comment proves a broader point. The worst thing that can happen to a franchise isn't people bitching about it online; it's people no longer caring anymore. Look at Game of Thrones - they screwed up that show so bad that it went from the hottest property on TV to being almost erased from public consciousness in less than a year.
The prequels may have done many things poorly that pissed off or disappointed people, but the sequels have killed many people's interest in the franchise altogether. That indifference you feel as someone who's obviously a big fan is a testament of how monumentally Disney botched these movies.
I personally enjoyed the Force Awakens the first time I saw it. It was only until I saw it again and started contemplating the story telling and characters that I changed my mind.

The only ending to the series I consider canon is George Lucas’ treatment for the trilogy. New worlds, the Whill, Dart Maul running a criminal empire, Luke restoring the Jedi Order, and Leia becoming Chancellor of the New Republic already make the treatment the real continuation of “The Skywalker Saga.” What we got was a discombobulated mess that had very little direction or originality.
They were made with ZERO HEART so they will never be loved by the fans who hate it now.
I was 6 in 1977 and my sons were born in 2000 and 2003. They and their friends were totally invested in the sequels (and Rogue One, Solo and The Mandalorian) to the extent that I think matched or even eclipsed that of myself and my friends with the OT. They were obsessed with ranking them and discussing theories. They enjoy the OT but those films are regarded as a bit slow in comparison. They also rate ROTS but not episode 1 and 2. What is interesting is that investment hasn't really faded; they still value the experiences of seeing the ST at the cinema and still rate the films. They are THEIR Star Wars.
Born in 92 and had a copy of A New Hope that I watched over and over growing up through the 90s but never was able to get copies of Empire or Return or even watch them for that matter till around the time that Menace was coming out. I fell in love with Star Wars just from that first movie and when I got the other two movies it just solidified my love so as Menace came out I was so excited to see a Star Wars movie in theaters so I have deep love for that movie and Maul was and for many years my absolute favorite character only beaten now by Ahsoka and it's back and forth still. As I got older though I can totally see the faults with the movie and why there was prequel dislike buuuut unlike the prequels, that I feel most of the hate was about the over use of CGI and of course Midichlorians but the overall story expanded and gave a satisfying lead up to that original trilogy we all loved so much, the sequels kind of undid the originals and then attempted to redo them and in the eyes of many ruined what came before by taking away and giving the accomplishments earned by the og characters to these new not as well written characters and I feel that will always leave a bad taste in peoples mouths about those films that time won't be able to wash out

The biggest reason is the prequels were an actual George Lucas product. The sequels are the product of a mega-corporation trying to mass produce content for money. Disney is like a wealthy doctor/lawyer who buys a Ferrari and slams it into a brick wall. Because they can afford it doesn’t mean they have the talent to operate it.
The OT was lightning in a bottle and a young Lucas ground it out with shear passion and willpower. The prequels were an older Lucas trying to take his younger versions vision and give fans what they had asked for. The sequels were just disney trying to distill the SW legacy and made poison instead of moonshine.
I think instead of just undoing the OT, the sequels should’ve been about a giant New republic that was kinda of a shady government, and then Kylo leaves Luke’s order and takes some students to create a small army of Sith. In addition to scattered people from the Empire like we see in Mando. Then similar to the Jedi not sensing Palpatine’s schemes, Kylo and his Sith Order take over the new republic. It would be like history repeating itself. Then we have Luke, Han, Leia, and the new kids Rey, Poe, and Finn (who was a former student of Kylo) trying to stop the new Sith Order/New Empire. It would’ve been fresh to see the good side being the giant government power and the bad side being a small, stealth like takeover. Instead of just having a big bad empire again like the dumb first order
I still love Episode 7, and the possibilities after that were limitless. Unfortunately, that all got destroyed by Rian Johnson

Honestly, Rian Johnson did the most logical thing. Force Awakens had so many contradicting plot threads that no answer in TLJ would be good. So he pretty much did the only thing he could do and flip the table. I don't like the movie, but Force Awakens gave it no choice.
At the theater, I thought TFA was alright. Then I thought about it and realized the scam. Even if the following 2 movies didn't absolutely suck, all we would have gotten was a bland, soulless, forgettable retread of what had already been done. Because that's what TFA was.

The thing is, people don't like TFA, they just like the promises TFA made about future films. And it is pretty clear not even JJ knew the answers to all the mysteries
It amuses me to listen to Sequel apologists trying to make the argument - that the Sequels will be accepted one day. It is a bit like watching a bee trying to get through a window. "Maybe now... Maybe now... Maybe now... Maybe now... Maybe now"
No I am afraid that will not be the case. There are no redeeming qualities of the Sequel Trilogy, no matter how you frame the argument.

Yeah, the prequels also didn’t smear the legacy of beloved characters, it only added to those characters even if the acting and or lines and some creative choices (Jar Jar) were not ideal, it makes sense that over time, people have warmed up to them. Honestly, I like to say my childhood Star Wars is the clone wars. I grew up with it, got really invested in the characters and will never forget how much fun it was. I saw the Last Jedi in theaters when i was 11 and even then I knew something was off. I don’t nostalgia will have that much of a role in changing people’s minds.
Regarding point 4, I have little cousins who are way, way, way more passionate about the Infinity Saga from Marvel than the Sequel Trilogy. They cried when the snap occurred in Infinity War and it made me realize that that was their “I am your father” moment in a way. The Sequels missed out on an opportunity to absolutely spoil this generation but instead pushed away a majority of past, current and potential fans.
I want to sort of bring attention to the third point as I feel I’m part of the generation that’s growing up with the sequels. I was born after the prequels were released and my dad showed me all 6 movies when I was about 4 so I had already been severely investing into star wars at this point. Looking back on years past I don’t really remember much talk or interest into Star Wars coming from the sequels at all, for me personally the Star Wars of my generation is the movies I’ve always loved and the countess hours I have put into watching the clone wars (both when it was on Netflix and now Disney+). I agree with the idea that the mcu is the Star Wars of my generation, it’s so much more likely to hear a reference to infinity war or talk about a new mcu show than you are to hear about Star Wars. However I would say the mandolorian is a great show that’s popular in this generation mostly because of grogu. I remember hearing many people talk about the show when it was first released in 2019 and afterwards as well though not as much. I just wanted to sort of give my perspective on this as I’m one of the people who is more so growing up with ugh the sequels, it I feel no attachment to them in any way other than how we use the popcorn cans from the theater as trash cans. Which is no way related to any opinion on the sequels.
I am a huge Star Wars fan and have been since I watched RotJ on a taped VHS in the late 80s, and I have only seen half of TLJ and never watched TRoS. I still read EU novels and play SWTOR once in a while, but I couldn't GAF about the sequels. I will always see them as squandered potential and a massive loss of opportunities. Those movies completely betray the promise RotJ ended with. The promise that the Empire was gone and Luke would rebuild the Jedi Order. Instead all that happens in the sequels is that the status quo is reset to the same thing and they erase Luke and Anakin's accomplishments.

This generation are far different and I think there has also been a death of going to the cinema... I went to see ROS on opening weekend with about 14 people in the theater (I didn't like it). RotS I was a teen and queuing with loads of others. A light saber battled staged by two of the theater goers was brilliant... just showed the level of fans and the excitement there was for the movie. I spoke to a lot of people before and after the film the whole experience was fantastic. Cut to yesterday taking my son to see paw patrol and my son wasn't excited at all going to the cinema didn't seem much of "a thing" he even asked half way though if the movie could be paused because he needed the toilet. He generally watches more UA-cam stuff to do with gaming or steam trains then he dose anything main stream. My husband took me to leister Square at the weekend to see the new MCU film and it was ok but nothing like the experience I ever got at a star wars movie. Every single one of the prequels (and Lord of the rings films) there was excitement, meeting people, chatting and a day to remember... I don't think my son will have the same love for any franchise... maybe there is too much on offer? Or maybe this generation need something new some one to make something creative like lucus did to get behind...
Yep a lot of my class mates need action action no good story telling. They all think Star Wars is boring and one laughed at me because I knew what a death trooper was on a Rogue One T-Shirt. Star Wars is too “boring” for them and it just doesn’t interest them. Pretty sad really, unless there are more kids like me Star Wars will be dead whithin 15-20 years:( Kids just can’t get enough action :(
@@river.m2010 they had to rely on story. I thought avatar was a good tech demo but couldn't get into the story. Atm everyone seems to have to say how they feel rather then expressing it.. people seem to look at me funny when in breath I say I love classic stories like wurthing heights and star wars... its like a good story is a good story.

Prequels respected what came before them. They had passion and a story to tell; the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker.
Sequels disrespected and hated what came before them. They belittled the heroes of the past and said *"forget the past, kill it if you have to."* They destroyed Luke Skywalker, the symbol of hope for several generations.
For that reason alone, no true Star Wars fan will ever come to terms with the Sequels.

Sequel hate is different than Prequel hate. Prequel hate was from fans that hated the execution of the fiction.
Sequel hate come from fans that saw that it can be done MUCH worse, but it has the added layer of toxicity from those that do like it, deciding haters are also bad people. So on top of bad fiction is also being attacked as the bigot, (that most fans are not) while the bigotry done by the creators of the Sequels is okay with Sequel fans

I've come around on the Prequels, because Prequel fans are aware of the bad and embrace it. And it's shortcomings come from a sincere place of one man and I'm okay with failure when it comes from a place like that. It's helped me even appreciate George Lucas even more.... which I don't know would have happened if the Sequels were at good as I was hoping for.
It's been a journey of realization I've kinda loved.

Sequel fans don't acknowledge the bad and defend it because they're told that people who don't like it are "bad people." And they don't want to be a part of being "bad people."
I sure like The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. They're the kind of movies I simply enjoy re-watching.

I think you are spot on. Although I think our opinion on them could improve based on what they do in the future to improve the characters. This was certainly true with the clone wars animated series. The prequel movies had a very rushed character development for anakin which didn’t give us much chance to like him( although I do believe Hayden did a great job). His later development in the clone wars made us like him much more. I think they could have done more at the time to expand the characters within the Star Wars resistance animated series, but they completely blew it with that considering it had very little to do with the resistance. Also a plan for the whole trilogy would have benefitted them. The sequels were like a complete zig zagging story that made very little sense.
I LOVED episode one as a kid. Absolutely loved it to death. I loved Jar Jar, I loved the Gungans, I loved the Podracing, I loved it all. I loved all three of the prequels. Now as an adult, I have found that II and III are hard to get through, but they have great moments and the story is good, I just have problems with some dialogue and such. Episode I still shines for me even after aging up. Maybe it's because it was the first Star Wars film I saw in theater, who knows, but I still love it. I liked VII and VIII on my first watch, but man a day after watching VIII something felt wrong and I started to hate it, and then my hate of VIII made me hate VII. Then IX came along and just dumped a fat load on Star Wars even worse than VIII did. There's no redeeming quality in the new Star Wars.
