    I appreciate your insight on this subject! I've worked with a marketing team and an agent but had little success... As painful as it is, we as photographers have to wear many hats, like marketing as you mention. One important thing to do along with your advice is to keep a spreadsheet of all the actions (posts, comments, calls, likes, etc) and watch the magic happen. The progress of recording kept me motivated and kept me going. The more you give the more you receive.

    Phone calls, phone calls, phone calls. I appreciate that you touched on this, a good reminder that this needs to happen. If your making phone calls you will probably stand out above other photographers that are only sending emails or nothing at all. Thank you for touching on the math; 50 phone calls = 1 job. It's a hustle but if you really want to make a photography business work you'll do whatever needs to be done. The next phone call could land you a monthly paycheck.

    I tell high school boys who need money, borrow a lawn mower & edger, then knock on enough doors every day to show 20 people pictures of your work. After 5 days, you will probably be a 99% failure...and you will have one lawn customer. Next week, do it again. You will still probably be a 99% failure, but you will now have 2 customers. By the end of the summer, you will be a rich capitalist. You will own your own mower, edger & successful business.

      Chuckles I knew someone that bought a drill and a load of £2 peepholes for doors who made a decent living just bicycling around town getting £10 a door. Where there is a will there is a way!

      Wonderful idea. A lot of doors have peep holes that are too high for children and little old ladies. Thank you, I will pass along your comment.

    I find that wedding photographer makes quite a good income.
    A friend of mine who is doing wedding photography has like wedding event to shoot every week. He earns quite alot from there.
    Shooting landscape is hard to earn profit because of less demand.

    FIGURES! The one thing I hate doing the most, #5 Making Calls, is the one thing you say is the most beneficial. QUESTION: Do emails count? You didn't mention it. Just wondering...

    • @jimmywest1
      @jimmywest1 9 років тому

      Maximilian Imaging I hate calling as well, but with practice It's just way most effective due to It's the closest you can come without seeing them in person (Which is the best tbh). My tips for this would be; Listen to the accent when he/she answers. People always greet eachother differently depending where they are from.
      If you put yourself at their level and greet them the way they greet in person you'll have more of a connection which will make it easier for them to listen. In the middle part I always try to joke some, making myself look a little silly so they know I'm not just "trying to sell myself".
      And the last part where we say goodbye, even if they have said yes/no I ALWAYS wish them a great day / weekend if It's Friday. People that answers the phone all days always appreciate that.

    Hey Serge, are you still doing cold calling today, or was it only for a period of time and then you could stop? Would you say it makes sense to spend one day (8hrs) per week doing calls to hopefully get 2 shoots per week?
    Also, have you ever tried online advertising like AdWords, Facebook Ads or LinkedIn Ads? Any success?

    I have a camera for my birthday and I'm 11 years old. I wanted to be a photographer and this video helped a lot. It's too bad that I can't go anywhere to take photos. I take photos of my cities sky at night when the sky is kinda pink or orange.

      if you cant go anywhere due to your age, then start by watching some tutorials on still life, and perfect tht.

    • @hannag4768
      @hannag4768 8 років тому +1

      B1itzW0lf There's no such thing as "can't"! You just have to get the will to go out and search for something to photograph!
      I'm 13, using my parents 15 year old Nikon d200. Even though I live out in the country it's still hard af to actually find something to photograph (that I like)... especially when your Main intrest is animals lol. But if I spend more time outside (1-1.5 hours) I always get at least one good shot (... sometimes...). Whatever you want to photograph, patience is always key :)
      Good luck! :D

    Bonjour Serge,
    how did you get in to making photo's for hotels? i think it's not easy, all the 4 things are totaly different, like events, in dark cafe's, then hotels, can you make a behind the scene video of how to make photos for hotels? how you do it, what gear you use?
    would love to do that work i think, because i;m not realy a person/portrait shooter.
