With 200k up here in northern sweden you can get a castle for those money😂,but you only have 4 months of growing, dont look for cabins they are not isolated so good..,and isolate a cabin can cost as much as the cabin itself..look for a smaller house instead..a torp as we call it here in sweden..most of the so called Torp in sweden have own water wells an are already suited for the winter

I moved to Sweden 8.5 yrs ago, living in the middle between Oslo & Stockholm, 25km away from the nearest Small town. I don’t think you are being realistic. How will you manage living remote without a car? How will you make money? Don’t underestimate the cold and the long winters (it is freezing for at least 4 months here)? Growing your own vegetables is not enough to survive on, the vegetable growing season is only 4 months here.

    • @wildrosie
      @wildrosie  2 роки тому +25

I started this house hunt knowing all those things and decided I would just stay really flexible - if I didn't manage to get the house ready for winter or I didn't have any work, I'd just have to go back to London for the winter months and come back when the temperatures rise in spring / summer. Until everything would be ready for full time living. But so far all has been good - it's been cold but it's been okay, I've got some freelance work which I do from home and I'm 12 km from the nearest town - I can walk or cycle. I'm curious to see what will happen in the coming months, but I see this as a long term project, so whatever happens is okay

I really think you need to visit these places in winter.
Im not saying this cannot be done. It can very well be done. You can survive anything, but to live, not only survive. Im not sure if you are ready at this point. Winter in an uninsulated summer cottage in northern sweden without a vehicle to transport building materials, plow or move yourself in an emergency... Its not Instagram.
Maybe if you work on the buldings only in summertime for a couple of summers and go home for the winter until you have enough wood and have the buildings at a level where you can live there.

Is anything cheap in Sweden? -- but not a bad thing. Not a "cheap" population either, indeed if one ever has doubts about an ethics issue look to Sweden (and Scandinavians in general) for mature perspective. Thanks for the video lass, good luck.

I've followed your blog for a few years and have been envious of your past adventures. Was wondering what you've been up to, and great to see that you've planned a new and different adventure! Look forward to catching up on your vlogs - though hope you still have plans for long distance tramping once it's possible again.

I did notice a bit of irony at cabin four where you said you wanted something a bit more 'wild', but then said a downside was that you didn't have a phone signal there. Isn't that what 'wild' is all about?

When I bought my place… it was for the most part complete and I was iffy about buying one so done…to my surprise even as done as it was I found myself changing… upgrading…. personalizing… adding and am still not done after 3 years. I am completely comforted knowing that since things are already stable, secure…finished….my changes can be done at my pace and when I’m ready…and I can do them without any pressures…..so don’t be sidelined by something more finished than you’d like if you like it otherwise……there are always things to be done and things take time.

Im going in reverse watching your videos 😂. Its strange to me that on one of the last cabins here the one thats off a road owned by forest service . That wont be plowed for winter 😏😒 its exactly opposite in US if road owned by forrest service it is their responsibility to plow and maintain it. If you are off grid in US road responsibility is all yours to do , plow , maintain. My bff lives off grid in Maine US and her and 9 others familys that live off her road either all pitch in 💰💸 and pay for snowplow guy to plow sometimes every other day. They got sick of paying for it , so her and 9 families bought a old dump truck 🚚 with a plow attached 😊. Nothing is worse than being trapped snowed in ❄️❄️❄️ waiting for "When is snowplow guy coming today ?" 😒 lololol. The state of Maine is one of snowiest ❄️ in North east US

I'm doing something similar. I'm looking for a small cabin on a few acres of land. Land that I can turn into a garden/food forest. Hoping to grow fruit and vegetables. I want to sell produce at a small 'honor-system' farm stand. I'd love to have a heated greenhouse built so I can grow during the winter months as well. Maybe sell produce to local grocery stores and restaurants. Donate a percentage to local food pantries. Everything is so expensive right now. Anyway, new sub! Good luck with your search. I'll be watching :)

I don't know if you found a place , but blocked is the best to find them . the good houses sell within a day and disappear from blocked so you need to be fast. I found a old school ( högakusten)with electricity and summer water for 50,000 sek (5,000) euro. the challenge will be that many of the sellers are older and don't speak English.
    good luck!

Prices have gone up in the north for two reasons: The pandemic, people are working from home anyway so many realised they can live somewhere else rather than in the cities. And there’s also a trend to get into nature.
And the other major reason is the ”wonder in the north”. There’s major investments in the north of Sweden by major battery factories and other modern tech companies and they’re gonna need to hire loads of people. And of course they’re gonna need places to live. So that’s driving prices as well.
Most of that will be in the northern cities though or in areas near where those factories will be situated.
The northern parts of Sweden are massive though so don’t worry too much about it. It’s not gonna be crowded😀
And I have to say, I think there are very cheap cabins elsewhere in Sweden too if you look really far away from the cities. So it might help if you widen your search to at least central Sweden as well.
Anyway, good luck to you and to anyone else looking to move to Sweden. I know I’m biased cos I’m swedish, but it’s pretty amazing 😀 🇸🇪
