Hello and welcome! I'm Betty Franks, and I create my vision of abstract fields of flowers using acrylic paints and pencils (and other mark-making tools). I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and travel a couple of times a year to Preko, Croatia (where my parents live). I started painting in 2012 and focused on abstract art in the summer of 2015. What a Trooper you are, Betty. This has got to be the most challenging thing an artist can do and you compound that with sharing the entire process with us - Brava! I love the effect of transferring the painted marks onto the surface. It is just the right effect of loose, blurry and enticing the eye. Another terrific painting.

You're super kind, Elizabeth! Yes, I have pieces that don't work out. Sometimes I got back into them. Sometimes I just throw them away. No need to have a constant reminder that it didn't work out! 🤣

Commissions are a struggle I try to do two at once and one is always overworked
That's frustrating! Sounds like you need to have a spare piece on the side to overwork! When I was working on two large pieces (commission), I off loaded my brush and extra paint onto a canvas. That one turned out awesome!! And it's now living in Canada! Wish all of them worked out like that!

Blue is very difficult to use without bringing down a painting in feeling - it will always depress if not overwhelm the painting unless one goes to a lavender-blue or the aquas or turquoises. Straight blue is a dreary color and tends to be a depressing color. It must be counteracted with a LOT of lime greens, chartreuses, corals and peaches or whites or it will depress an entire painting. Better once lightened here, but still too much of it in this painting, I fear.
Thankfully, the client absolutely loves his painting!

Hi Susan! Great question! I used a variety of different sized brushes so that I can have a variety of different sized marks. I don't want all my marks to be the same size. Thanks so much for watching!

Oh, Betty! This is the first painting I’ve ever seen that I’d swear was a collage until seen up close! I haven’t seen all your work, of course, but so far it’s my favorite!! Love how the layers are visible in places and the splatters are just delightful and add to the joyousness. I think that’s what has stood out to me in your work, which I want most for my own to express-such JOY!

Hi Marian! The squirt bottles (called FIFO and on my favorite art supplies list under Amazon: www.bettyfranksart.com/my-favorite-art-supplies) are so perfect for Nova Color Paints. I don't add any water. Their paints have the perfect consistency for these bottles. Need to buy more of them!

Perhaps a strategy is to have 'Commissioners" who have first pick of a series, so you are creating anyway and as their name comes to the top of the list, they get to pick.

what type of tape are you using to hold the plastic on the wall? i've been finding that my plastic keeps falling
In the past, I have used blue tape. However, when I moved my studio and removed the tape, it took off some of the drywall. No fun! So this time I put tape along the edges of my plastic and then used push pins to secure it to the wall. It's much easier to fill tiny holes than fixing drywall!
