Charming to listen to creatives try and rationally explain their process😊, when it’s not a rational ,linear linkage, it’s all urges and rule following and braking, experimentation based around experience; one step forward two steps sideways one and a half steps back in a dance with the canvas until the music in your head comes to the final crescendo. I always get jazzed up when I watch any of your videos.
This made me so happy today - thank you for another very informative tutorial, Betty. Hope you know how much you add to our practice of intuitive, expressive art.
Thank you for sharing. I could see even by your body language how frustrated you were. I absolutely love how it came out in the end. I have been struggling with a painting myself now I have so many ideas I can't wait to go back and try them.
You Have Sooooo influenced/inspired me - while trying to imitate your style I think I stumbled upon my own style; I need to take your course but I need to sell a painting first 😅
The most difficult thing I encounter while painting is knowing when to paint wet into wet and when not to. I've come to the conclusion that I will find the answer only by painting as often as I can and by trial and error. It also seems that large canvases would facilitate the endeavor. Watching your paint process has also been most helpful. If I get stuck I watch your videos. They are very inspirational.
I'm loving watching your process, I'm starting to really enjoy making abstract art, and seeing al your layers brings me so much joy. I'm very much an amateur but friends and family are loving what I'm doing. Thanks so much for sharing xxxx
Love this painting and I could see your struggle from the beginning. A lot of thinking and going back and forth just validates my own struggles with the painting process some days, especially if it’s been a while since my last painting session. It’s like your brain and hand coordination need to build muscle memory for them to just start flowing with ease but with this style of painting I think the struggle is part of the journey to a well finished piece. Thank for continuing to inspire me with your work. I appreciate it more than words can express.
Hi Betty, sending greetings all the way from South Africa. I love your work! I have played around with your methods and I had so much fun. You avtually ignited a deeply hidden love for abstract art! It helped me loosen up and relax in terms of creating "the masterpiece" every time I do something creative.❤💜
I love yr art😊 I have times when I get stuck doing my canvas , I love painting on huge canvas and using different mediums. I feel better knowing it's okay if I get stuck and can come back to it
Found your videos so engaging to watch and your level in of energy.appreciated the content to inspire me back into my studio after period of I'll health so thankyou.good luck with your exhibition and enjoy
Hi Susan! Welcome to my videos! Glad you enjoyed it. I rarely add water to my paints. I tend to work with more of a dry brush technique. Thanks for watching!
Thank you Betty, very good to see an experienced artist hit the struggles. Same for me but never giving up until I love it. Do you ever work on 2 pieces at the same time? And congratulations on the sales🌻
There are always struggles, right?! I will often have several pieces at various stages. Sometimes I'll put two or three up on my wall and work on them at the same time and then finish each one individually. Thanks so much for watching!
I either use a palette knife to get some on my palette or I pour some out. I also recently bought FIFO (first in first out) squeeze bottles. Love them! Here's a link to my favorite art supplies: www.bettyfranksart.com/resources
I love your work and that you continued on to make this beautiful. I am curious how long it would take for this piece to dry? Thank you for your wonderful tutorials and I recently bought your online course and am loving it!
Hi Paula! First, thanks so much for buying my online course!! I usually give my art about a week to dry--give or take depending on the time of year. Because I work in fairly thin layers of paint, it doesn't take too long to dry.
Good question! I never right down what colors I mix. I want to say it's a mix of pink, yellow and white. Honestly, I'm not sure! Thanks so much for watching!
i always love how vibrant and colorful your paintings are Betty!! i find that i keep getting stuck because i am always drawn to the same 2-3 colors and then even when there is enough variation in values in my work, i'm unsatisfied with how little variation there is in the hues! my comfort zone is blues and greens, and any time i try something else i end up hating it 😩 does anyone have any advice??
How about just spending time mixing colors. Take 2 colors (that you normally don't use) plus black and white and create a variety of colors with it. Then expand to include 3-4 colors plus B&W. You might enjoy creating your own colors and then you can add them to your paintings.
@@BettyFranksArt you are exactly right!! i was watching your harmonizing colors video after this and realized that this might be what i'm running into. thank you so much 🙏
What size brushes do you use to start this painting. This is sometimes what I struggle with, using the right brushes. Are they natural bristle, catalyst polytip brushes.
I totally understand, Terri! I believe I used a 12 or 14 brush. I get them mostly at Michael's when they have a sale. I buy the acrylic brushes. I really like the ones with a silver handle (I forget the name and I'm not near my studio to see if there's a name on the brushes). Buy some large ones in round, flat, and filbert. Personally, I like to smoosh my brushes before using them! I don't like them when they're perfect. Good luck to you. You'll soon find out what you like to use!

Betty Franks is an intuitive painter. You can’t teach intuition. She’s a rich artist…she has an enormous studio, can afford whatever she needs….her color combinations are interesting and worth noticing…but if you look at 20 of her paintings in a row, they start to all look alike, so she has her own sort of formula. Art is for the rich, and it’s too bad, but that’s the reality.
Thank you...and, I'm going to have to disagree with you. I'm not rich. I started painting in the laundry room, then graduated to a single car garage. I now have a studio because I have worked hard these past 5+ years to create, market, and sell my art--so that I can have a large studio. If I didn't have a large studio, I still would be creating somewhere...anywhere. Because I love creating. The paintings I have created since 2018 all look alike (as you put it) because that's my style. I'm so happy I finally found my style that comes from my heart and soul. I'll continue to create like this until I grow tired of it. Then I'll move on to something else. I truly believe that thoughts become things. I dreamed of having a large studio for years. I'll continue to dream big. Wishing you all the best!
If art were for the rich we wouldnt have starving artists. Imagination costs nothing. What a narrow minded view. I am poor as poor gets lol and I still create art.😢

It's all about that dance with the canvas, isn't it? I love how you explained it, Rich. You are an artist with your words!

Hi Patrick! I totally agree with you...practice! We learn through trial and error what works and doesn't work for us and for our artwork. Keep at it!
Oh so informative! Love your layered work!! Xxx from zambia!!
